Abstract | The precipitation of a disordered FCC surface structure after low angle Ga+ ion irradiation during focused ion beam thinning of a B2 Cu-Zn-Al alloy with e/a=1.48 is reported. Conventional as well as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy techniques reveal FCC layers on both sides of the thinned sample. The occurrence of this structure is attributed to disordering and dezincification of the alloy resulting from the sputtering process during the irradiation. Changes in crystallographic sample orientation with respect to the incoming ion beam do not have a significant effect on the appearance of the FCC surface structure. | ||||

Abstract | The irradiation effects of thinning a sample of a Cu-Zn-Al shape memory alloy to electron transparency by a Ga+ focused ion beam were investigated. This thinning method was compared with conventional electropolishing and Ar+ ion milling. No implanted Ga was detected but surface FCC precipitation was found as a result of the focused ion beam sample preparation. Decreasing the irradiation dose by lowering the energy and current of the Ga+ ions did not lead to a complete disappearance of the FCC structure. The latter could only be removed after gentle Ar+ ion milling of the sample. It was further concluded that the precipitation of the FCC is independent of the crystallographic orientation of the surface. | ||||

Abstract | The effects of high dose ion irradiation in β CuZnAl were investigated between room temperature and 150 °C. Single crystal samples with surface normal close to [001]β were irradiated with 300 keV Cu+ ions. Microstructural changes were characterized using transmission electron microscopy. Irradiation induced cavities located on the surface exposed to the irradiation were observed. The morphology, size and density distribution of these cavities were analyzed as a function of different irradiation conditions. The shape and location of the cavities with respect to the irradiation surface were not affected by irradiation temperature or irradiation dose. Instead, the cavity size distribution showed a bi-modal shape for a dose of 15 dpa, regardless of irradiation temperature. For a dose of 30 dpa the bi-modal distribution was only observed after room temperature irradiation. The diffusion effects of vacancies produced by irradiation are analyzed in shape memory CuZnAl alloys, which main characteristic is the diffusionless martensitic transformation. Particularly, the cavity size distributions were analyzed in terms of nucleation, growth and coalescence. | ||||

Abstract | The effects produced by swift heavy ions in the martensitic (18R) and austenitic phase (beta) of Cu based shape memory alloys were characterized. Single crystal samples with a surface normal close to [210](18R) and [001](beta) were irradiated with 200 MeV of Kr(15+), 230 MeV of Xe(15+), 350 and 600 MeV of Au(26+) and Au(29+). Changes in the microstructure were studied with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It was found that swift heavy ion irradiation induced nanometer sized defects in the 18R martensitic phase. In contrast, a hexagonal close-packed phase formed on the irradiated surface of beta phase samples. HRTEM images of the nanometer sized defects observed in the 18R martensitic phase were compared with computer simulated images in order to interpret the origin of the observed contrast. The best agreement was obtained when the defects were assumed to consist of local composition modulations. | ||||

Abstract | The aged Ni-rich NiTi shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit the multi-stage martensitic transformation (MMT), which has important influences on functional properties and practical applications of the NiTi SMAs. A hidden single-stage martensitic transformation from B2 parent phase to B19' martensite phase is found in an aged Ni51Ti49 alloy, which happens concurrently with a commonly observed two-stage martensitic transformation B2-R-B19' (R: martensite phase) and actually composes one stage of a multi-stage martensitic transformation (MMT) together with the two-stage one. B2-B19' martensitic transformation occurs in the NiTi matrix containing Ni4Ti3 precipitates with relatively large inter-particle space, while B2-R-B19' transformation takes place in the NiTi matrix with Ni4Ti3 precipitates having relatively small inter-particle space. Abstract | Co-rich ZnCoO nanoparticles embedded in wurtzite Zn0.7Co0.3O thin films are grown by pulsed laser deposition on a Si substrate. Local superconductivity with an onset Tc at 5.9 K is demonstrated in the hybrid system. Abstract | Ultrafine ZnO nanocrystals with a thickness down to 0.25 nm are grown by a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition method. Electronic band structures and native point defects of ZnO nanocrystals are studied by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first-principles density functional theory calculations. Below a critical thickness of nm ZnO adopts a graphitic-like structure and exhibits a wide band gap similar to its wurtzite counterpart. The hexagonal wurtzite structure, with a well-developed band gap evident from scanning tunneling spectroscopy, is established for a thickness starting from similar to 1.4 nm. With further increase of the thickness to 2 nm, V-O-V-Zn defect pairs are easily produced in ZnO nanocrystals due to the self-compensation effect in highly doped semiconductors. | ||||

Abstract | Relying on combined electron-beam lithography and lift-off methods Au/Ti bilayer electrical contacts were attached to individual ZnO nanowires (NWs) that were grown by a vapor phase deposition method. Reliable Schottky-type as well as ohmic contacts were obtained depending on whether or not an ion milling process was used. The response of the ZnO NWs to ultraviolet light was found to be sensitive to the type of contacts. The intrinsic electronic properties of the ZnO NWs were studied in a field-effect transistor configuration. The transfer characteristics, including gate threshold voltage, hysteresis and operational mode, were demonstrated to unexpectedly respond to visible light. The origin of this effect could be accounted for by the presence of point defects in the ZnO NWs. | ||||

Abstract | The relationship between irrigation water availability and crop revenue is multifaceted. However, most of the previous studies focused only on the direct effect of irrigation water on crop revenue or considered that the indirect effect passes only through the farmers’ improved farm inputs usage. Nevertheless, unlike previous studies, this study argues that a one-sided argument that irrigation water directly causes high crop revenue or indirectly affects crop revenue only via the farmers’ improved farm inputs usage is incomplete, as irrigation water not only directly contributes to crop revenue but also indirectly conduces to crop revenue via both the type of crops produced and the farmers’ improved farm inputs usage. Considering the previous studies’ limitations, this study investigates pathways how small-scale irrigation water affects crop revenue and identifies challenges of small-scale irrigation farming in Fogera district, Ethiopia. Results endorsed that irrigation water has both direct and indirect effects on crop revenue. The indirect effect is 67 percent of the total effect and it is mediated by both the type of crops produced and farmers’ improved farm inputs usage. The result also indicated that irrigation user farmers have a higher income, more livestock assets and resources and better food, housing, and cloths than the non-users. Moreover, challenges related to agricultural output and input market were identified as the most severe problem followed by crop disease. The findings of our study suggest that to utilize the benefits of irrigation water properly, it is crucial to encourage farmers to use more improved farm inputs and to shift from staple to cash crop production. Moreover, farmers are frequently exposed to cheating by illegal brokers in the output market, therefore it is also important to increase farmers’ accessibility to output and input markets, the quality of improved farm inputs, and the bargaining power of farmers with market information. | ||||

Abstract | By using a model Hamiltonian with competing antiferromagnetic (AFM) and d-wave superconductivity orders, the impurity-induced structures of orders in d-wave superconductors is investigated. We find that the transition between one-dimensional stripe and two-dimensional checkerboardlike modulation around a single nonmagnetic impurity can take place as the strength of the AFM interaction U or the impurity scattering strength V0 is varied. It is also found that the impurity-induced stripe can first transit to checkerboardlike modulation and then disappears with increasing the next-nearest-neighbor hopping strength |t|. Phase diagrams of V0 versus U and |t| for various modulations of the spin order are presented. In addition, the quantum interference effect on the modulations of orders due to two strong nonmagnetic impurities is briefly examined, and the checkerboardlike and quasistripe patterns can occur depending on the sites where two impurities are placed. | ||||

Abstract | We numerically investigate the spin-orbit (SO) coupling effect on the magnetic flux evolution of energy and supercurrent in mesoscopic d-wave superconducting loops by solving the spin-generalized Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently. It is found that the energy spectrum splits when the SO interaction is involved and the Majorana zero mode can be realized in the [100] edges of square systems for an appropriate SO coupling strength. Superconducting phase transitions appear when the energy gap closes, accompanied by energy jumps between different energy parabolas in the ground state, which provides a possible mechanism to support fractional flux periodicity of supercurrent. Moreover, in the case of rectangular loops with SO coupling, the jumps of the ground-state energy gradually disappear by increasing the ratio of length to height of the sample, and a paramagnetic response with opposite direction of the screening current around zero flux value can occur in such systems. | ||||

Abstract | We numerically investigate the mixed pairing symmetries inmesoscopic superconducting loops in the presence of spin correlations by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently. The spatial variations of the superconducting order parameters and the spontaneous magnetization are determined by the band structure. When the threaded magnetic flux turns on, the charge and spin currents both emerge and depict periodic evolution. In the case of a mesoscopic loop with dominant triplet p(x) +/- ip(y)-wave symmetry, a slight change of the chemical potential may lead to novel flux-dependent evolution patterns of the ground-state energy and the magnetization. The spin-polarized currents show pronounced quantum oscillations with fractional periods due to the appearance of energy jumps in flux, accompanied with a steplike feature of the enhanced spin current. Particularly, at some appropriate flux, the peaks of the zero-energy local density of states clearly indicate the occurrence of the odd-frequency pairing. In the case of a superconducting loop with dominant singlet d(x2-y2)-wave symmetry, the spatial profiles of the zero-energy local density of states and the magnetization show spin-dependent features on different sample diagonals. Moreover, the evolution of the flux-induced spin current always exhibits an hc/e periodicity. | ||||

Abstract | The Majorana zero modes and persistent spin current in mesoscopic d-wave-superconducting loops with spin-orbit (SO) interaction are investigated by numerically solving the spin-generalized Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently. For some appropriate strength of the SO coupling, Majorana zero-energy states and sharp jumps of the spin-polarized currents can be observed when the highest energy levels cross the Fermi energy in the spectrum, leading to spin currents with opposite chirality flowing near the inner and outer edges of the sample. When the threaded magnetic flux turns on, four flux-dependent patterns of the persistent spin current with step-like features show up, accompanied by Majorana edge modes at flux values where the energy gap closes. Moreover, the Majorana zero mode is highly influenced by the direction of the Zeeman field. A finite in-plane field can lead to the gap opening since the inversion symmetry is broken. Remarkably, multiple Majorana zero-energy states occur in the presence of an out-of-plane field h(z), and the number of steps in the spin current evolution can be effectively tuned by the field strength due to the shift of Majorana zero modes. Finally, when the loop sample contains surface indentation defects, zero-energy modes can always show up in the presence of an appropriate h(z). Interestingly, multiple Majorana states may be present in the system with a corner defect even if h(z) = 0. | ||||

Abstract | Recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements of the proximity effect in Au/La2−xSrxCuO4 and La1.55Sr0.45CuO4/La2−xSrxCuO4 bilayers showed a proximity-induced pseudogap [O. Yuli, I. Asulin, Y. Kalcheim, G. Koren, and O. Millo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 197003 (2009)]. We describe the proximity effect in mesoscopic superconductor/normal-metal bilayers by using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a tight-binding Hamiltonian with competing antiferromagnetic and d-wave superconductivity orders. The temperature-dependent local density of states is calculated as a function of the distance from the interface. Bound state due to both d-wave and spin-density wave gaps are formed in the normal metal for energies less than the respective gaps. If there is a mismatch between the Fermi velocities in the two layers we observe that these states will shift in energy when spin-density wave order is present, thus inducing a minigap at finite energy. We conclude that the STM measurement in the proximity structures is able to distinguish between the two scenarios proposed for the pseudogap (competing or precursor to superconductivity). | ||||

Abstract | We investigated the magnetic flux dependence of the supercurrent in mesoscopic d-wave superconducting loops, containing impurities and surface defects, by numerically solving the Bogoliubovde Gennes equations self-consistently. In the presence of impurities, bound states arise close to the Fermi energy. In the case of a single impurity, the flux-induced current is found to be suppressed. This can be different when more impurities are introduced in the sample due to the quantum interference effect, which depends sensitively on the relative position between the impurities. We further analyze the effect of small surface defects at the inner or outer edge of the loop, and show that indentation and bulge defects have pronounced and different effects on the supercurrent. | ||||

The hc/2e-periodic behavior can be restored almost entirely when we displace the central hole sufficiently out of the center of the sample. In rectangular loops, the discrete current-carrying low-energy spectrum can exist for an odd winding number of the order parameter. | ||||

Abstract | In the framework of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism, we study the dynamics of vortex-antivortex (V-Av) pairs in mesoscopic symmetric and asymmetric superconducting loops under an applied ac current. In contrast to the case of a constant biasing dc current, the process of the V-Av collision and annihilation is strongly affected by the time-periodic ac signal. As the direction of the applied ac current is reversed, the existed V-Av pair moves backward and then collides with a new created Av-V pair in a symmetric loop. In the presence of an appropriate external magnetic field, a novel sinusoidal-like oscillatory mode of the magnetization curve is observed, and the periodic dynamical process of the V-Av annihilation occurs in both branches of the sample. Moreover, for the asymmetric sample with an off-centered hole the creation point of the V-Av pair shifts away from the center of the sample, and the creation and annihilation dynamics of V-Av pairs turns out to be very different from the symmetric case. Abstract | Sodium-ion batteries have been considered as potential candidates for stationary energy storage because of the low cost and wide availability of Na sources. However, their future commercialization depends critically on control over the solid electrolyte interface formation, as well as the degree of sodiation at the positive electrode. Here we report an easily scalable ball milling approach, which relies on the use of metallic sodium, to prepare a variety of sodium-based alloys, insertion layered oxides and polyanionic compounds having sodium in excess such as the Na4V2(PO4)(2)F-3 phase. The practical benefits of preparing sodium-enriched positive electrodes as reservoirs to compensate for sodium loss during solid electrolyte interphase formation are demonstrated by assembling full C/P'2-Na-1[Fe0.5Mn0.5]O-2 and C/'Na3+xV2(PO4)(2)F-3' sodium-ion cells that show substantial increases (>10%) in energy storage density. Our findings may offer electrode design principles for accelerating the development of the sodium-ion technology. | ||||

Abstract | Hydrogen production through photocatalytic water splitting is being developed swiftly to address the ongoing energy crisis. Over the past decade, with the rise of graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials, an increasing number of computational and experimental studies have focused on relevant van der Waals (vdW) semiconductor heterostructures for photocatalytic water splitting. In this review, the fundamental mechanism and distinctive performance of type-II and Z-scheme vdW heterostructure photocatalysts are presented. Accordingly, we have conducted a systematic review of recent studies focusing on candidates for photocatalysts, specifically vdW heterostructures involving 2D transition metal disulfides (TMDs), 2D Janus TMDs, and phosphorenes. The photocatalytic performance of these heterostructures and their suitability in theoretical scenarios are discussed based on their electronic and optoelectronic properties, particularly in terms of band structures, photoexcited carrier dynamics, and light absorption. In addition, various approaches for tuning the performance of these potential photocatalysts are illustrated. This strategic framework for constructing and modulating 2D heterostructure photocatalysts is expected to provide inspiration for addressing possible challenges in future studies. | ||||

Abstract | The hydrothermal aging stability of 3Y-TZP-xM2O3 (M = La, Nd, Sc) was investigated as a function of 0.02–5 mol% M2O3 dopant content and correlated to the overall phase content, t-ZrO2 lattice parameters, grain size distribution, grain boundary chemistry and ionic conductivity. The increased aging stability with increasing Sc2O3 content and the optimum content of 0.4–0.6 mol% Nd2O3 or 0.2–0.4 mol% La2O3, resulting in the highest aging resistance, could be directly related to the constituent phases and the lattice parameters of the remaining tetragonal zirconia. At low M2O3 dopant contents ≤0.4 mol%, the different aging behavior of tetragonal zirconia was attributed to the defect structure of the zirconia grain boundary which was influenced by the dopant cation radius. It was observed that the grain boundary ionic resistivity and the aging resistance followed the same trend: La3+ > Nd3+ > Al3+ > Sc3+, proving that hydrothermal aging is driven by the diffusion of water-derived mobile species through the oxygen vacancies. Accordingly, we elucidated the underlying mechanism by which a larger trivalent cation segregating at the zirconia grain boundary resulted in a higher aging resistance. |

Abstract | Ceramic materials are prone to slow crack growth, resulting in strength degradation over time. Although yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramics have higher crack resistance than other dental ceramics, their aging susceptibility threatens their long-term performance in aqueous environments such as the oral cavity. Unfortunately, increasing the aging resistance of Y-TZP ceramics normally reduces their crack resistance. Our recently conducted systematic study of doping 3Y-TZP with various trivalent cations revealed that lanthanum oxide (La2O3) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) have the most potent effect to retard the aging kinetics of 3Y-TZP. In this study, the crack-propagation behavior of La2O3 and Al2O3 co-doped 3Y-TZP ceramics was investigated by double-torsion methods. The grain boundaries were examined using scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (STEM-EDS). Correlating these analytic data with hydrothermal aging studies using different doping systems, a strategy to strongly bind the segregated dopant cations with the oxygen vacancies at the zirconia-grain boundary was found to improve effectively the aging resistance of Y-TZP ceramics without affecting the resistance to crack propagation. | ||||

Abstract | OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate the optical properties, mechanical properties and aging stability of yttria-stabilized zirconia with different compositions, highlighting the influence of the alumina addition, Y2O3 content and La2O3 doping on the translucency. METHODS: Five different Y-TZP zirconia powders (3 commercially available and 2 experimentally modified) were sintered under the same conditions and characterized by X-ray diffraction with Rietveld analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Translucency (n=6/group) was measured with a color meter, allowing to calculate the translucency parameter (TP) and the contrast ratio (CR). Mechanical properties were appraised with four-point bending strength (n=10), single edge V-notched beam (SEVNB) fracture toughness (n=8) and Vickers hardness (n=10). The aging stability was evaluated by measuring the tetragonal to monoclinic transformation (n=3) after accelerated hydrothermal aging in steam at 134 degrees C, and the transformation curves were fitted by the Mehl-Avrami-Johnson (MAJ) equation. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's HSD test (alpha=0.05). RESULTS: Lowering the alumina content below 0.25wt.% avoided the formation of alumina particles and therefore increased the translucency of 3Y-TZP ceramics, but the hydrothermal aging stability was reduced. A higher yttria content (5mol%) introduced about 50% cubic zirconia phase and gave rise to the most translucent and aging-resistant Y-TZP ceramics, but the fracture toughness and strength were considerably sacrificed. 0.2mol% La2O3 doping of 3Y-TZP tailored the grain boundary chemistry and significantly improved the aging resistance and translucency. Although the translucency improvement by La2O3 doping was less effective than for introducing a substantial amount of cubic zirconia, this strategy was able to maintain the mechanical properties of typical 3Y-TZP ceramics. SIGNIFICANCE: Three different approaches were compared to improve the translucency of 3Y-TZP ceramics. | ||||

Abstract | Latest trends in dental restorative ceramics involve the development of full-contour 3Y-TZP ceramics which can avoid chipping of veneering porcelains. Among the challenges are the low translucency and the hydrothermal stability of 3Y-TZP ceramics. In this work, different trivalent oxides (Al2O3, Sc2O3, Nd2O3 and La2O3) were selected to dope 3Y-TZP ceramics. Results show that dopant segregation was a key factor to design hydrothermally stable and high-translucent 3Y-TZP ceramics and the cation dopant radius could be used as a controlling parameter. A large trivalent dopant, oversized as compared to Zr4+, exhibiting strong segregation at the ZrO2 grain boundary was preferred. The introduction of 0.2 mol% La2O3 in conventional 0.10.25 wt.% Al2O3-doped 3Y-TZP resulted in an excellent combination of high translucency and superior hydrothermal stability, while retaining excellent mechanical properties. | ||||

Abstract | Different factors such as the way of incorporating the Y2O3 stabilizer, alumina addition and sintering temperature were assessed with the goal to improve the low temperature degradation (LTD) resistance of 3Y-TZP without compromising on the mechanical properties. The degradation of hydrothermally treated specimens was studied by X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Decreasing the sintering temperature decreased the LTD susceptibility of 3Y-TZPs but did not allow to obtain a LTD resistant 3Y-TZP with optimized mechanical properties. Alumina addition along with the use of Y2O3 stabilizer coated starting powder allowed to combine both an excellent toughness and LTD resistance, as compared to alumina-free and stabilizer co-precipitated powder based equivalents. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the improved LTD resistance could be attributed to the segregation of Al3+ at the grain boundary and the heterogeneously distributed Y3+ stabilizer. | ||||

Abstract | The influence of 0.25, 2 and 5 wt.% alumina addition on the mechanical properties and low temperature degradation (LTD) of 3, 2.5 and 2 mol% yttria-stabilized TZP ceramics was investigated. The amount of alumina addition was observed to have a crucial impact on the degradation of Y-TZP ceramics. Independent on the yttria stabilizer content, 0.25 wt.% alumina had a higher degradation retarding effect to Y-TZP ceramics than 2 and 5 wt.% of alumina addition, which had a comparable effect. The apparent activation energy for the degradation process was increased by adding alumina, but it was the same for 0.255 wt.% alumina doped 3Y-TZP ceramics. For Y-TZPs containing a small amount of alumina addition, only the segregated Al3+ at the grain boundaries of the zirconia grains was effective to retard the degradation of Y-TZPs. The secondary phase Al2O3 grains increased the degradation kinetics, which might be attributed to the residual stresses. | ||||

Abstract | Van der Waals quantum wells, naturally formed in two-dimensional layered materials with nanoscale thickness, possess many inherent advantages over conventional molecular beam epitaxy grown counterparts, and could bring up intriguing physics and applications. However, optical transitions originated from the series of quantized states in these emerging quantum wells are still elusive. Here, we show that multilayer black phosphorus appears to be an excellent candidate for van der Waals quantum wells with well-defined subbands and high optical quality. Using infrared absorption spectroscopy, we probe subband structures of multilayer black phosphorus with tens of atomic layers, revealing clear signatures for optical transitions with subband index as high as 10, far from what was attainable previously. Surprisingly, in addition to allowed transitions, an unexpected series of “forbidden” transitions is also evidently observed, which enables us to determine energy spacings separately for conduction and valence subbands. Furthermore, the linear tunability of subband spacings by temperature and strain is demonstrated. Our results are expected to facilitate potential applications for infrared optoelectronics based on tunable van der Waals quantum wells. | ||||
