Abstract: Spin-orbit torques (SOT) allow ultrafast, energy-efficient toggling of magnetization state by an in-plane charge current for applications such as magnetic random-access memory (SOT-MRAM). Tailoring the SOT vector comprising of antidamping (T-AD) and fieldlike (T-FL) torques could lead to faster, more reliable, and low-power SOT-MRAM. Here, we establish a method to quantify the longitudinal (T-AD) and transverse (T-FL) components of the SOT vector and its efficiency chi(AD) and chi(FL), respectively, in nanoscale three-terminal SOT magnetic tunnel junctions (SOT-MTJ). Modulation of nucleation or switching field (B-SF) for magnetization reversal by SOT effective fields (B-SOT) leads to the modification of SOT-MTJ hysteresis loop behavior from which chi(AD) and chi(FL) are quantified. Surprisingly, in nanoscale W/CoFeB SOT-MTJ, we find chi(FL) to be (i) twice as large as chi(AD) and (ii) 6 times as large as chi(FL) in micrometer-sized W/CoFeB Hall-bar devices. Our quantification is supported by micromagnetic and macrospin simulations which reproduce experimental SOT-MTJ Stoner-Wohlfarth astroid behavior only for chi(FL) > chi(AD). Additionally, from the threshold current for current-induced magnetization switching with a transverse magnetic field, we show that in SOT-MTJ, T-FL plays a more prominent role in magnetization dynamics than T-AD. Due to SOT-MRAM geometry and nanodimensionality, the potential role of nonlocal spin Hall spin current accumulated adjacent to the SOT-MTJ in the mediation of T-FL and chi(FL) amplification merits to be explored.

Abstract: Sr1-xLaxCuO2-delta (x=0.10-0.20) thin films exhibiting an oxygen-deficient 2 root 2a(p)x2 root a(p) x c structure (a(p) and c represent the cell parameters of the perovskite subcell) were epitaxially grown by means of pulsed laser deposition in low-pressure oxygen ambient. (001) KTaO3 and (001) SrTiO3 single crystals were used as substrates, with BaTiO3 as buffer layer. The Sr1-xLaxCuO2-delta films were oxidized during cooling down in order to yield the infinite-layer-type structure. By applying this method, high quality single-phase Sr1-xLaxCuO2 thin films could be obtained for 0.10 <= x <= 0.175 doping range. The films grown on BaTiO3/KTaO3 show superconductivity for 0.15 <= x <= 0.175 with optimum doping at x=0.15, in contrast with previously reported data. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Sr2CrO2Cr2As2 and Ba2CrO2Cr2As2 with Cr2+ ions in CrO2 sheets and in CrAs layers crystallize with the Sr2Mn3Sb2O2 structure (space group I4/mmm, Z = 2) and lattice parameters a = 4.00800(2) Å, c = 18.8214(1) Å (Sr2CrO2Cr2As2) and a = 4.05506(2) Å, c = 20.5637(1) Å (Ba2CrO2Cr2As2) at room temperature. Powder neutron diffraction reveals checkerboard-type antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cr2+ ions in the arsenide layers below TN1Sr, of 600(10) K (Sr2CrO2Cr2As2) and TN1Ba 465(5) K (Ba2CrO2Cr2As2) with the moments initially directed perpendicular to the layers in both compounds. Checkerboard-type antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cr2+ ions in the oxide layer below 230(5) K for Ba2CrO2Cr2As2 occurs with these moments also perpendicular to the layers, consistent with the orientation preferences of d4 moments in the two layers. In contrast, below 330(5) K in Sr2CrO2Cr2As2, the oxide layer Cr2+ moments are initially oriented in the CrO2 plane; but on further cooling, these moments rotate to become perpendicular to the CrO2 planes, while the moments in the arsenide layers rotate by 90° with the moments on the two sublattices remaining orthogonal throughout [behavior recently reported independently by Liu et al. [Liu et al. Phys. Rev. B 2018, 98, 134416]]. In Sr2CrO2Cr2As2, electron diffraction and high resolution powder X-ray diffraction data show no evidence for a structural distortion that would allow the two Cr2+ sublattices to couple, but high resolution neutron powder diffraction data suggest a small incommensurability between the magnetic structure and the crystal structure, which may account for the coupling of the two sublattices and the observed spin reorientation. The saturation values of the Cr2+ moments in the CrO2 layers (3.34(1) μB (for Sr2CrO2Cr2As2) and 3.30(1) μB (for Ba2CrO2Cr2As2)) are larger than those in the CrAs layers (2.68(1) μB for Sr2CrO2Cr2As2 and 2.298(8) μB for Ba2CrO2Cr2As2) reflecting greater covalency in the arsenide layers.

Abstract: Sr2FeO3+x F1-x (x = 0.08, 0.2), an n = 1 Ruddlesden-Popperphase, was synthesized from the oxidationof Sr2FeO3F in air at high temperature followinga fluorine for oxygen substitution and Fe3+ to Fe4+ oxidation. A structural investigation of both compounds was performedusing complementary and high-resolution techniques (Synchrotron X-rayand electron diffraction, Mo''ssbauer spectroscopy, HR-STEM)coupled to DFT calculation. This study reveals that oxidation leadsto a high degree of apical anion disorder coupled to antiphase boundaries. Sr2FeO3F, an oxyfluoride compoundwith an n = 1 Ruddlesden-Popper structure,was identifiedas a potential interesting mixed ionic and electronic conductor (MIEC).The phase can be synthesized under a range of different pO(2) atmospheres, leading to various degrees of fluorinefor oxygen substitution and Fe4+ content. A structuralinvestigation and thorough comparison of both argon- and air-synthesizedcompounds were performed by combining high-resolution X-ray and electrondiffraction, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy,Mo''ssbauer spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. While the argon-synthesizedphase shows a well-behaved O/F ordered structure, this study revealedthat oxidation leads to averaged large-scale anionic disorder on theapical site. In the more oxidized Sr2FeO3.2F0.8 oxyfluoride, containing 20% of Fe4+, two differentFe positions can be identified with a 32%/68% occupancy (P4/nmm space group). This originates due to the presenceof antiphase boundaries between ordered domains within the grains.Relations between site distortion and valence states as well as stabilityof apical anionic sites (O vs F) are discussed. This study paves theway for further studies on both ionic and electronic transport propertiesof Sr2FeO3.2F0.8 and its use in MIEC-baseddevices, such as solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract: Stabilizing new host structures through potassium extraction from K-based polyanionic materials has been proven to be an interesting approach to develop new Li+/Na+ insertion materials. Pursuing the same trend, we here report the feasibility of preparing langbeinite “Fe-2(SO4)(3)” via electrochemical and chemical oxidation of K2Fe2(SO4)(3). Additionally, we succeeded in stabilizing a new K2Cu2(SO4)(3) phase via a solid-state synthesis approach. This novel compound crystallizes in a complex orthorhombic structure that differs from that of langbeinite as deduced from synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction. Electrochemically, the performance of this new phase is limited, which we explain in terms of sluggish diffusion kinetics. We further show that K2Cu2(SO4)(3) decomposes into K2Cu3O(SO4)(3) on heating, and we report for the first time the synthesis of fedotovite K2Cu3O(SO4)(3). Finally, the fundamental attractiveness of these S = 1/2 systems for physicists is examined by neutron magnetic diffraction, which reveals the absence of a long-range ordering of Cu2+ magnetic moments down to 1.5 K.

Abstract: Stable monolayer materials based on existing, well known and stable two-dimensional crystal fluorographene and molybdenum disulfide are predicted to exhibit a huge magnetocrystalline anisotropy when functionalized with adsorbed transition metal atoms at vacant sides. Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism were performed to investigate the adsorption of the transitional metals in a single S (or F) vacancy of monolayer molybdenum disulfide (or fluorographene). We found strong bonding of the transitional metal atoms to the vacant sites with binding energies ranging from 2.5 to 5.2 eV. Our calculations revealed that these systems with adsorbed metal atoms exhibit a magnetic anisotropy, specifically the structures including Os and Ir show a giant magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of 31-101 meV. Our results demonstrate the possibility of obtaining stable monolayer materials with huge magnetocrystalline anisotropy based on preexisting, well known and stable two-dimensional crystals: fluorographene and molybdenum disulfide. We believe that the results obtained here are useful not only for deeper understanding of the origin of magnetocrystalline anisotropy but also for the design of monolayer optoelectronic devices with novel functionalities.

Abstract: Stained glass windows incorporating dark blue and purple enamel paint layers are in some cases subject to severe degradation while others from the same period survived the ravages of time. A series of dark blue, greenblue and purple enamel glass paints from the same region (Northwestern Europe) and from the same period (16early 20th centuries) has been studied by means of a combination of microscopic X-ray fluorescence analysis, electron probe micro analysis and transmission electron microscopy with the aim of better understanding the causes of the degradation. The chemical composition of the enamels diverges from the average chemical composition of window glass. Some of the compositions appear to be unstable, for example those with a high concentration of K2O and a low content of CaO and PbO. In other cases, the deterioration of the paint layers was caused by the less than optimal vitrification of the enamel during the firing process. Recipes and chemical compositions indicate that glassmakers of the 1617th century had full control over the color of the enamel glass paints they made. They mainly used three types of coloring agents, based on Co (dark blue), Mn (purple) and Cu (light-blue or greenblue) as coloring elements. Bluepurple enamel paints were obtained by mixing two different coloring agents. The coloring agent for redpurple enamel, introduced during the 19th century, was colloidal gold embedded in grains of lead glass.

Abstract: Starting from a microscope model of the intermolecular potential, a unified description is presented of the Bragg scattering law in the orientationally disordered and in the ordered phase of solid C-60. The orientational structure factor is expanded in terms of symmetry-adapted surface harmonics. The expansion coefficients are calculated from theory and compared with experiment Their temperature evolution is studied in the disordered phase at the 260 K transitions and in the ordered phase. In the ordered phase, new results from high-resolution neutron powder diffraction are given. In the disordered phase, space group Fm $($) over bar$$ 3m, the reflections have A(1g) symmetry; in the ordered phase, space group Pa $$($) over bar 3, reflections of T-2g symmetry appear and in addition the A(1g) reflections are renormalized. The orientational density distribution is calculated. The effective crystal-field potential is constructed, its temperature evolution in the ordered phase is studied and related to the occurrence of an orientational glass.

Abstract: Starting from a model of rigid interacting C-60 polymer chains on an orthorhombic lattice, we study the mutual orientation of the chains and the stability of the crystalline structures Pmnn and I2/m. We take into account (i) van der Waals interactions and electric quadrupole interactions between C-60 monomers on different chains as well as (ii) interactions of the monomers with the surrounding alkali atoms. The direct interactions (i) always lead to an antiferrorotational structure Pmnn with alternate orientation of the C-60 chains in planes (001). The interactions (ii) with the alkalis consist of two parts: translation-rotation (TR) coupling where the orientations of the chains interact with displacements of the alkalis, and quadrupolar electronic polarizability (ep) coupling, where the electric quadrupoles on the C-60 monomers interact with induced quadrupoles due to excited electronic d-states of the alkalis. Both interactions (ii) lead to an effective orientation-orientation interaction between the C-60 chains and always favor the ferrorotational structure I2/m, where C-60 chains have a same orientation. The structures Pmnn for KC60 and I2/m for Rb- and CsC60 are the result of a competition between the direct interaction (i) and the alkali-mediated interactions (ii). In Rb- and CsC60 the latter are found to be dominant, the preponderant role being played by the quadrupolar electronic polarizability of the alkali ions. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Starting from an empirical force constant model of valence interactions and calculating by Ewalds method the ion-ion force constants, we derive the dynamical matrix for a monolayer crystal of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). The phonon dispersion relations are calculated. The interplay between valence and Coulomb forces is discussed. It is shown by analytical methods that the longitudinal and the transverse optical (LO and TO) phonon branches for in-plane motion are degenerate at the Γ point of the Brillouin zone. Away from Γ, the LO branch exhibits pronounced overbending. It is found that the nonanalytic Coulomb contribution to the dynamical matrix causes a linear increase of the LO branch with increasing wave vector starting at Γ. This effect is general for two-dimensional (2D) ionic crystals. Performing a long-wavelength expansion of the dynamical matrix, we use Borns perturbation method to calculate the elastic constants (tension coefficients). Since the crystal is noncentrosymmetric, internal displacements due to relative shifts between the two sublattices (B and N) contribute to the elastic constants. These internal displacements are responsible for piezoelectric and dielectric phenomena. The piezoelectric stress constant and the dielectric susceptibility of 2D h-BN are calculated.

Abstract: Starting from first principles, we show the formation and evolution of superconducting gaps in MgB2 at its ultrathin limit. Atomically thin MgB2 is distinctly different from bulk MgB2 in that surface states become comparable in electronic density to the bulklike sigma and pi bands. Combining the ab initio electron-phonon coupling with the anisotropic Eliashberg equations, we showthat monolayer MgB2 develops three distinct superconducting gaps, on completely separate parts of the Fermi surface due to the emergent surface contribution. These gaps hybridize nontrivially with every extra monolayer added to the film owing to the opening of additional coupling channels. Furthermore, we reveal that the three-gap superconductivity in monolayer MgB2 is robust over the entire temperature range that stretches up to a considerably high critical temperature of 20 K. The latter can be boosted to >50K under biaxial tensile strain of similar to 4%, which is an enhancement that is stronger than in any other graphene-related superconductor known to date.

Abstract: Starting from logarithmic, sinusoidal and power spirals, it is shown how these spirals are connected directly with Chebyshev polynomials, Lamé curves, with allometry and Antonelli-metrics in Finsler geometry. Curvature is a crucial concept in geometry both for closed curves and equiangular spirals, and allowed Dillen to give a general definition of spirals. Many natural shapes can be described as a combination of one of two basic shapes in nature—circle and spiral—with Gielis transformations. Using this idea, shape description itself is used to develop a novel approach to anisotropic curvature in nature. Various examples are discussed, including fusion in flowers and its connection to the recently described pseudo-Chebyshev functions.

Abstract: Starting from the gas phase, small clusters can be produced and deposited with huge flexibility with regard to composition, materials choice and cluster size. Despite many advances in experimental characterization, a detailed morphology of such clusters is still lacking. Here we present an atomic scale observation as well as the dynamical behaviour of ultrasmall germanium clusters. Using quantitative scanning transmission electron microscopy in combination with ab initio calculations, we are able to characterize the transition between different equilibrium geometries of a germanium cluster consisting of less than 25 atoms. Seven-membered rings, trigonal prisms and some smaller subunits are identified as possible building blocks that stabilize the structure.

Abstract: Starting from the simplified linear combination of atomic orbitals method in combination with first-principles calculations, we construct a tight-binding (TB) model in the two-centre approximation for borophene and hydrogenated borophene (borophane). The Slater and Koster approach is applied to calculate the TB Hamiltonian of these systems. We obtain expressions for the Hamiltonian and overlap matrix elements between different orbitals for the different atoms and present the SK coefficients in a nonorthogonal basis set. An anisotropic Dirac cone is found in the band structure of borophane. We derive a Dirac low-energy Hamiltonian and compare the Fermi velocities with that of graphene.

Abstract: Statement of problem. The wear of tooth structure opposing anatomically contoured zirconia crowns requires further investigation. Purpose. The purpose of this in vitro study was to measure the roughness and wear of polished, glazed, and polished then reglazed zirconia against human enamel antagonists and compare the measurements to those of veneering porcelain and natural enamel. Material and methods. Zirconia specimens were divided into polished, glazed, and polished then reglazed groups (n=8). A veneering porcelain (Ceramco3) and enamel were used as controls. The surface roughness of all pretest specimens was measured. Wear testing was performed in the newly designed Alabama wear testing device. The mesiobuccal cusps of extracted molars were standardized and used as antagonists. Three-dimensional (3D) scans of the specimens and antagonists were obtained at baseline and after 200 000 and 400 000 cycles with a profilometer. The baseline scans were superimposed on the posttesting scans to determine volumetric wear. Data were analyzed with a 1-way ANOVA and Tukey Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) post hoc tests (alpha=.05) Results. Surface roughness ranked in order of least rough to roughest was: polished zirconia, glazed zirconia, polished then reglazed zirconia, veneering porcelain, and enamel. For ceramic, there was no measureable loss on polished zirconia, moderate loss on the surface of enamel, and significant loss on glazed and polished then reglazed zirconia. The highest ceramic wear was exhibited by the veneering ceramic. For enamel antagonists, polished zirconia caused the least wear, and enamel caused moderate wear. Glazed and polished then reglazed zirconia showed significant opposing enamel wear, and veneering porcelain demonstrated the most. Conclusions. Within the limitations of the study, polished zirconia is wear-friendly to the opposing tooth. Glazed zirconia causes more material and antagonist wear than polished zirconia. The surface roughness of the zirconia aided in predicting the wear of the opposing dentition. (J Prosthet Dent 2013;109:22-29)
