Abstract |
The discrete shell structure of vortex matter strongly influences the flux dynamics in mesoscopic superconducting Corbino disks. While the dynamical behavior is well understood in large and in very small disks, in the intermediate-size regime it occurs to be much more complex and unusual, due to (in)commensurability between the vortex shells. We demonstrate unconventional vortex dynamics (inversion of shell velocities with respect to the gradient driving force) and angular melting (propagating from the boundary where the shear stress is minimum, towards the center) in mesoscopic Corbino disks. |

Abstract |
The dithiol functionalized UiO-66-(SH)(2) is developed as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of mercury in aqueous media. Important parameters for the application of MOFs in real-life circumstances include: stability and recyclability of the adsorbents, selectivity for the targeted Hg species in the presence of much higher concentrations of interfering species, and ability to purify wastewater below international environmental limits within a short time. We show that UiO-66-(SH)(2) meets all these criteria. |

Abstract |
The electro-phonon resonance effect is a consequence of a resonant interaction between two electric subbands mediated by an optical phonon. It occurs in a quasi-two-dimensional electron system each time the energy difference between two electric subbands equals the energy of a Lo phonon. We study the influence of this effect on the electron mobility by using the momentum balance equation. The temperature and electron density dependences of the resonances are studied in the linear and non-linear response regimes. |

Abstract |
The energy barrier which has to be overcome for a single vortex to enter or exit the sample is studied for thin superconducting disks, rings, and squares using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The shape and the height of the nucleation barrier is investigated for different sample radii and thicknesses and for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. It is shown that the London theory considerably overestimates (underestimates) the energy barrier for vortex expulsion (penetration). (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics. |

Abstract |
The experimental parameter ranges needed to generate superfluidity in optical and drag experiments in GaAs double quantum wells are determined using a formalism that includes self-consistent screening of the Coulomb pairing interaction in the presence of the superfluid. The very different electron and hole masses in GaAs make this a particularly interesting system for superfluidity with exotic superfluid phases predicted in the BCS-Bose-Einstein condensation crossover regime. We find that the density and temperature ranges for superfluidity cover the range for which optical experiments have observed indications of superfluidity but that existing drag experiments lie outside the superfluid range. We also show that, for samples with low mobility with no macroscopically connected superfluidity, if the superfluidity survives in randomly distributed localized pockets, standard quantum capacitance measurements could detect these pockets. |

Abstract |
The highly energetic electrons in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) can alter or even completely destroy the structure of samples before sufficient information can be obtained. This is especially problematic in the case of zeolites, organic and biological materials. As this effect depends on both the electron beam and the sample and can involve multiple damage pathways, its study remained difficult and is plagued with irreproducibility issues, circumstantial evidence, rumors, and a general lack of solid data. Here we take on the experimental challenge to investigate the role of the STEM scan pattern on the damage behavior of a commercially available zeolite sample with the clear aim to make our observations as reproducible as possible. We make use of a freely programmable scan engine that gives full control over the tempospatial distribution of the electron probe on the sample and we use its flexibility to obtain multiple repeated experiments under identical conditions comparing the difference in beam damage between a conventional raster scan pattern and a newly proposed interleaved scan pattern that provides exactly the same dose and dose rate and visits exactly the same scan points. We observe a significant difference in beam damage for both patterns with up to 11 % reduction in damage (measured from mass loss). These observations demonstrate without doubt that electron dose, dose rate and acceleration voltage are not the only parameters affecting beam damage in (S)TEM experiments and invite the community to rethink beam damage as an unavoidable consequence of applied electron dose. |

Abstract |
The magneto- and Hall resistance of a locally gated cross shaped graphene Hall bar is calculated. The edge of the top gate is placed diagonally across the center of the Hall cross. Four-probe resistance is calculated using the Landauer-Büttiker formalism, while the transmission coefficients are obtained using the non-equilibrium Green's function approach. The interplay between transport due to edge channels and snake states is investigated. When two edge channels are occupied, we predict oscillations in the Hall and the bend resistance as function of the magnetic field, which are a consequence of quantum interference between the occupied snake states. |

Abstract |
The painting Saul and David, considered to date from c. 1652 and previously attributed to Rembrandt van Rijn and/or his studio, is a complex work of art that has been recently subjected to intensive investigation and conservation treatment. The goal of the research was to give insight into the painting's physical construction and condition in preparation for conservation treatment. It was also anticipated that analysis would shed light on authenticity questions and Rembrandt's role in the creation of the painting. The painting depicts the Old Testament figures of King Saul and David. At left is Saul, seated, holding a spear and wiping a tear from his eye with a curtain. David kneels before him at the right playing his harp. In the past, the large sections with the life-size figures were cut apart and later reassembled. A third piece of canvas was added to replace a missing piece of canvas above the head of David. As part of the investigation into the authenticity of the curtain area, a number of paint micro samples were examined with LM and SEM-EDX. Given that the earth, smalt and lake pigments used in the painting could not be imaged with traditional imaging techniques, the entire painting was also examined with state of the art non-destructive imaging techniques. Special attention was devoted to the presence of cobalt-containing materials, specifically the blue glass pigment smalt considered characteristic for the late Rembrandt. A combination of quantitative electron microprobe analysis and macroscopic X-ray fluorescence scanning revealed that three types of cobalt-containing materials are present in the painting. The first type is a cobalt drier that was found in the overpaint used to cover up the canvas inset and the joins that were added in the 19th century. The other two Co-containing materials are part of the original paint used by Rembrandt and comprise two varieties of smalt, a K-rich glass pigment that derives its gray-blue color by doping with Co-ions. Smalt paint with a higher Ni content (NiO:CoO ratio of around 1:4) was used to depict the blue stripes in Saul's colorful turban, while smalt with a lower Ni content was employed (NiO:CoO ratio of around 1:5) for the broad expanses of Saul's garments. The presence of two types of smalt not only supports the recent re-attribution of the painting to Rembrandt, but also that the picture was painted in two phases. Saul's dark red garment is painted in a rough, “loose” manner and the now discolored smalt-rich layer was found to have been partially removed during a past restoration treatment/s. In contrast, the blue-green smalt in the turban is much better preserved and provides a colorful accent. While the use of different types of smalt in a Rembrandt painting has been previously identified using quantitative EDX analysis of paint cross-sections, to the best of our knowledge this is the first time such a distinction has been observed in a 17th-century painting using non-destructive imaging techniques. In addition to the XRF-based non-invasive elemental mapping, hyperspectral imaging in the visual to near-infrared (VNIR) region was also carried out. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
The pyrochlore compounds Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 show an exotic form of magnetism called the spin ice state, resulting from the interplay between geometrical frustration and ferromagnetic coupling. A fascinating feature of this state is the appearance of magnetic monopoles as emergent excitations above the degenerate ground state. Over the past years, strong effort has been devoted to the investigation of these monopoles and other properties of the spin ice state in bulk crystals. Here, we report the fabrication of Ho2Ti2O7 thin films using pulsed laser deposition on yttria-stabilized ZrO2 substrates. We investigated the structural properties of these films by X-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy, and the magnetic properties by vibrating sample magnetometry at 2 K. The films not only show a high crystalline quality, but also exhibit the hallmarks of a spin ice: a pronounced magnetic anisotropy and an intermediate plateau in the magnetization along the [111] crystal direction. |

Abstract |
The quartic force field of thioformaldehyde has been calculated ab initio using large basis sets and augmented coupled cluster methods. Calculated fundamentals are in excellent agreement with experiment, as is the most important Coriolis coupling constant. Computed values for the anharmonicity, rovibrational coupling, and centrifugal distortion constants of the four isotopomers (H2CS)-S-32, (H2CS)-S-34, (HDCS)-S-32, and (D2CS)-S-32 have been reported. Predictions have been made for all vibrational transitions from the ground state to excited states with at most two quanta for these isotopomers, both using second-order perturbation theory corrected for Darling-Dennison resonance and using vibrational SCF-CI calculations. For (D2CS)-S-32, perturbation theory performs quite well; for the other isotopomers, performance is poorer for states involving excitation of the out-of-plane bend and, for the (H2CS)-S-32 and (H2CS)-S-34 isotopomers, also for the antisymmetric bend that is in severe Coriolis resonance with it. A possible explanation has been suggested. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc. |

Abstract |
The rational synthesis, comprehensive characterization, and mechanical and micromechanical properties of a calcium phosphate cement are presented. Hydroxyapatite cement biomaterial was synthesized from reactive sub-micrometer-sized dicalcium phosphate dihydrate and tetracalcium phosphate via a dissolution-precipitation reaction using water as the liquid phase. As a result nanostructured, Ca-deficient and carbonated B-type hydroxyapatite is formed. The cement shows good processibility, sets in 22 ± 2 min and entirely transforms to the end product after 6 h of setting reaction, one of the highest conversion rates among previously reported for calcium phosphate cements based on dicalcium and tetracalcium phosphates. The combination of all elucidated physical-chemical traits leads to an essential bioactivity and biocompatibility of the cement, as revealed by in vitro acellular simulated body fluid and cell culture studies. The compressive strength of the produced cement biomaterial was established to be 25 ± 3 MPa. Furthermore, nanoindentation tests were performed directly on the cement to probe its local elasticity and plasticity at sub-micrometer/micrometer level. The measured elastic modulus and hardness were established to be Es = 23 ± 3.5 and H = 0.7 ± 0.2 GPa, respectively. These values are in close agreement with those reported in literature for trabecular and cortical bones, reflecting good elastic and plastic coherence between synthesized cement biomaterial and human bones. |

Abstract |
The reproducible temporal separation of ion signals generated from a single multi-element droplet, observed in previous studies, was investigated in detail in this work using an ICPTOFMS with high temporal resolution. It was shown that the signal peak intensities of individual elements temporally shift relative to each other only for droplets moving through the plasma off-axis. The magnitude of these shifts correlated with the vaporization temperatures of the analytes and depended on the radial position of the droplets as well as on the thermal properties and velocity profiles of the carrier gases of the ICP. The occurrence of the signal shifting was explained by a spatial separation of analytes already present in the vapor phase in the ICP from a yet unvaporized residue of the droplet. This separation is most likely driven by anisotropic diffusion of vaporized analytes towards the plasma axis and a radial velocity gradient. The proposed explanation is supported by modeling of the gas velocities inside the ICP and imaging of the atomic and ionic emissions produced from single droplets, whose patterns were sloping towards the center of the torch. The effects observed in these studies are important not only for the fundamental understanding of analyteplasma interactions but have also a direct impact on the signal intensities and stability. |

Abstract |
The role of the Cu atoms sputtered from the cathode material in a cylindrical hollow cathode discharge (HCD) and the corresponding Cu+ ions are studied with a self-consistent model based on the principle of Monte Carlo (MC) and fluid simulations. In order to obtain a more realistic view of the discharge processes, this model is coupled with other submodels, which describe the behavior of electrons, fast Ar atoms, Ar+ ions, and Ar metastable atoms, also based on the principles of MC and fluid simulations. Typical results are, among others, the thermalization profile of the Cu atoms, the fast Cu atom, the thermal Cu atom and Cu+ ion fluxes and densities, and the energy distribution of the Cu+ ions. It was found that the contribution of the Ar+ ions to the sputtering was the most significant, followed by the fast Ar atoms. At the cathode bottom, there was no net sputtered flux but a net amount of redeposition. Throughout the discharge volume, at all the conditions investigated, the largest concentration of Cu atoms was found in the lower half of the HCD, close to the bottom. Penning ionization was found the main ionization mechanism for the Cu atoms. The ionization degree of copper atoms was found to be in the same order as for the argon atoms (10-4). Abstract |
The η-M6C, γ-M23C6, and π-M11C2 phases (M = Cr, Mn and Fe) have complex cubic lattices with lattice parameters of approximately 1.0 nm. They belong to the CFCC-TmC family (complex face-centered cubic transition metal carbides), display a rich variety of crystal structures, and play in important role in iron alloys and steels. Here we show that first-principles calculations predict high stability for the γ-M23C6 and η-M6C phases, and instability for the π-M11C2 phases, taking into account various compositional and structural possibilities. The calculations also show a wide variety in magnetic properties. The Cr-containing phases were found to be non-magnetic and the Fe-phases to be ferromagnetic, while the Mn-containing phases were found to be either ferrimagnetic or non-magnetic. Details of the local atomic structures, and the formation and stability of these precipitates in alloys are discussed. |

Abstract |
This paper conducts a meta-analysis of 32 electricity demand response programs in the residential sector to understand whether their success is dependent on specific characteristics. The paper analyses several regression models using various combinations of variables that capture the designs of the programs and the socio-economic conditions in which the programs are implemented. The analysis reveals that demand response programs are more likely to succeed in highly urbanized areas, in areas where economic growth rates are high, and in areas where the renewable energy policy is favorable. These findings provide useful guidance in determining where and how to implement future demand response programs. |

Abstract |
This paper uses a mechanistic frontier approach as a reference to evaluate the ability of conventional parametric (SFA) and non-parametric (DEA) frontier approaches for analyzing economicenvironmental trade-offs. Conventional frontier approaches are environmentally adjusted through incorporating the materials balance principle. The analysis is worked out for the Flemish pig finishing case, which is both representative and didactic. Results show that, on average, SFA and DEA yield adequate economicenvironmental trade-offs. Both methods are good estimators for technical efficiency. Cost allocative and environmental allocative efficiency scores are less robust, due to the well-known methodological advantages and disadvantages of SFA and DEA. For particular firms, SFA, DEA and the mechanistic approach may yield different economicenvironmental trade-offs. One has therefore to be careful when using conventional frontier approaches for firm-specific decision support. The mechanistic approach allows for optimizing performances per average present finisher, which is the production unit in pig finishing. Conventional frontier methods do not allow for this optimization since the number of average present finishers varies along the production functions. Since the mechanistic production function is based on underlying growth, feed uptake and mortality functions, additional firm-specific indicators can also be calculated at each point of the production function. |

Abstract |
Using Floquet-Bloch theory, we propose to realize chiral topological phases in two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal FeX2 (X=Cl, Br, I) monolayers under irradiation of circularly polarized light. Such 2D FeX2 monolayers are predicted to be dynamically stable and exhibit both ferromagnetic and semiconducting properties. To capture the full topological physics of the magnetic semiconductor under periodic driving, we adopt ab initio Wannier-based tight-binding methods for the Floquet-Bloch bands, with the light-induced bandgap closings and openings being obtained as the light field strength increases. The calculations of slabs with open boundaries show the existence of chiral edge states. Interestingly, the topological transitions with branches of chiral edge states changing from zero to one and from one to two by tuning the light amplitude are obtained, showing that the topological Floquet phase of high Chern number can be induced in the present Floquet-Bloch systems. Abstract |
Using the tight-binding approach, we investigate the energy spectrum of square, triangular, and hexagonal MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Novel edge states emerge in MoS2 QDs, which are distributed over the whole edge which we call ring states. The ring states are robust in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The corresponding energy levels of the ring states oscillate as a function of the perpendicular magnetic field which are related to Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. Oscillations in the magnetic field dependence of the energy levels and the peaks in the magneto-optical spectrum emerge (disappear) as the ring states are formed (collapsed). The period and the amplitude of the oscillation decrease with the size of the MoS2 QDs. |

Abstract |
Using time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we study the dynamic properties of a rectangular superconducting loop, which are found to depend on the position of the current leads. For asymmetric positioning of the leads, different kinetic inductance of the two paths for injected electric current leads to different critical conditions in the two branches. System self-regulates by allowing vortex entry, as vortex currents bring equilibration between the two current flows and the conventional resistive state can be realized. We also demonstrate that individual vortex entry in the loop can be detected by measuring the voltage between normal-metal leads, for applied currents comparable in magnitude to the screening currents. |

Abstract |
We demonstrate the feasibility of coincidence measurements on a conventional transmission electron microscope, revealing the temporal
correlation between electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy events. We make use of a
delay line detector with ps-range time resolution attached to a modified EELS spectrometer. We demonstrate that coincidence between both
events, related to the excitation and deexcitation of atoms in a crystal, provides added information not present in the individual EELS or
EDX spectra. In particular, the method provides EELS with a significantly suppressed or even removed background, overcoming the many
difficulties with conventional parametric background fitting as it uses no assumptions on the shape of the background, requires no user input
and does not suffer from counting noise originating from the background signal. This is highly attractive, especially when low concentrations
of elements need to be detected in a matrix of other elements. |

Abstract |
We introduce a new approach for the correlation energy of one- and two-valley two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems. Our approach is based on an interpolation between two limits, a random phase approximation at high densities and a classical approach at low densities which gives excellent agreement with available Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations. The two-valley 2DEG model is introduced to describe the electron correlations in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We study the zero-temperature transition from a Fermi liquid to a quantum Wigner crystal phase in monolayer TMDs. Consistent with QMC, we find that electrons crystallize at r(s) = 31 in one-valley 2DEG. For two valleys, we predict Wigner crystallization at r(s) = 30, implying that valley degeneracy has little effect on the critical r(s), in contrast to an earlier claim. |

Abstract |
We present a novel manufacture route for silicatitania photocatalysts using the diatom microalga Pinnularia sp. Diatoms self-assemble into porous silica cell walls, called frustules, with periodic micro-, meso- and macroscale features. This unique hierarchical porous structure of the diatom frustule is used as a biotemplate to incorporate titania by a solgel methodology. Important material characteristics of the modified diatom frustules under study are morphology, crystallinity, surface area, pore size and optical properties. The produced biosilicatitania material is evaluated towards photocatalytic activity for NOx abatement under UV radiation. This research is the first step to obtain sustainable, well-immobilised silicatitania photocatalysts using diatoms. |

Abstract |
We present the GW band structure of ZnO in its wurtzite (WZ), zincblende (ZB) and rocksalt (RS) phases at the Γ point, calculated within the GW approximation. We have used a Zn20+ pseudopotential which is essential for the adequate treatment of the exchange interaction in the self-energy. The accuracy of the pseudopotential used is also discussed. The effect of the pd hybridization on the GW corrections to the band gap is correlated by comparing the ZB and RS phase. |

Abstract |
We propose an improved image simulation procedure for atomic-resolution annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) based on the multislice formulation, which takes thermal diffuse scattering fully into account. The improvement with regard to the classical frozen phonon approach is realized by separating the lattice configuration statistics from the dynamical scattering so as to avoid repetitive calculations. As an example, the influence of phonon scattering on the image contrast is calculated and investigated. STEM image simulation of crystals can be applied with reasonable computing times to problems involving a large number of atoms and thick or large supercells. |

Abstract |
We report a MgFexAl2-xO4 synthetic spinel, where x varies from 0 to 0.26, as support for Ni-based catalysts, offering stability and carbon control under various conditions of methane reforming. By incorporation of Fe into a magnesium aluminate spine!, a support is created with redox functionality and high thermal stability, as concluded from temporal analysis of products (TAP) experiments and redox cycling, respectively. A diffusion coefficient of 3 x 10(-17) m(2) s(-1) was estimated for lattice oxygen at 993 K from TAP experiments. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) modeling identified that the incorporation of iron occurs as Fe3+ in the octahedral sites of the spinel lattice, replacing aluminum. Simulation of the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectrum of the reduced support showed that 60 +/- 10% of iron was reduced from 3+ to 2+ at 1073 K, while there was no formation of metallic iron. A series of Ni/MgFexAl2-xO4 catalysts, where x varies from 0 to 0.26, was synthesized and reduced, yielding a supported Ni-Fe alloy. The evolution of the catalyst structure during H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) and CO2 temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) was examined using time-resolved in situ XRD and XANES. During reforming, iron in both the support and alloy keeps control of carbon accumulation, as confirmed by O-2-TPO on the spent catalysts. By fine tuning the amount of Fe in MgFexAl2-xO4, a supported alloy was obtained with a Ni/Fe molar ratio of similar to 10, which was active for reforming and stable. By comparison of the performance of Ni-based catalysts with Fe either incorporated into or deposited onto the support, the location of Fe within the support proved crucial for the stability and carbon mitigation under reforming conditions. |

Abstract |
We sampled the Darwin mud volcano (MV) for meiofaunal community and trophic structure in relation to pore-water geochemistry along a 10 m transect from a seep site on the rim of the crater towards the MV slope. Pore-water profiles indicated considerable variation in upward methane (CH4) flow among sediment cores taken along the transect, with highest flux in the seep sediment core, gradually decreasing along the transect, to no CH4 flux in the core taken at a 5 m distance. Low sulphate concentrations and high levels of total alkalinity and sulphide (H2S) suggested that anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) occurred close to the sediment surface in the seep sediment core. High H2S levels had a genus- and species-specific impact on meiofaunal densities. Nematode genus composition varied gradually between sediment cores, with the genus Sabatieria dominating almost all sediment cores. However, genus diversity increased with increasing distance from the seep site. These limited data suggest that the community structure of seep meiofauna is highly dependent on local (a)biotic habitat characteristics, and a typical seep meiofaunal community cannot be delineated. Stable isotope values suggested the nematode diet up to 10 m from the seep site included thiotrophic carbon. The thicker hemipelagic sediment layer (photosynthetic carbon), the increased trophic diversity, and the heavier nematode δ13C farther from the seep site suggest a decrease in thiotrophy and an increase in photosynthetic carbon in the nematode diet. |

Abstract |
We studied equally charged particles, suspended in a complex plasma, which move in a plane and interact with a screened Coulomb potential (Yukawa type) and with an additional external confining parabolic potential in one direction, which makes the system quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D). The normal modes of the system are studied in the presence of dissipation. We also investigated how a perpendicular magnetic field couples the phonon modes with each other. Two different ways of exciting the normal modes are discussed: (1) a uniform excitation of the Q1D lattice, and (2) a local forced excitation of the system in which one particle is driven by, e.g., a laser. Our results are in very good agreement with recent experimental findings on a finite single chain system [Liu , Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 255003 (2003)]. Predictions are made for the normal modes of multichain structures in the presence of damping. |

Abstract |
We study the energy and temperature relaxation of electrons in graphene on a piezoelectric substrate. Scattering from the combined potential of extrinsic piezoelectric surface acoustical (PA) phonons of the substrate and intrinsic deformation acoustical phonons of graphene is considered for a (non) degenerate gas of Dirac fermions. It is shown that in the regime of low energies or temperatures the PA phonons dominate the relaxation and change qualitatively its character. This prediction is relevant for quantum metrology and electronic applications using graphene devices and suggests an experimental setup for probing electron-phonon coupling in graphene. |

Abstract |
We theoretically investigate the intrinsic optical anisotropy or polarization induced by the microscopic interface asymmetry (MIA) in no-common-atom (NCA) InAs/GaSb superlattices (SLs) grown along the [001] direction. The eight-band K⋅P model is used to calculate the electronic band structures and incorporates the MIA effect. A Boltzmann equation approach is employed to calculate the optical properties. We found that in NCA InAs/GaSb SLs, the MIA effect causes a large in-plane optical anisotropy for linearly polarized light and the largest anisotropy occurs for light polarized along the [110] and [11̅ 0] directions. The relative difference between the optical-absorption coefficient for [110]-polarized light and that for [11̅ 0]-polarized light is found to be larger than 50%. The dependence of the in-plane optical anisotropy on temperature, photoexcited carrier density, and layer width is examined in detail. This study is important for optical devices which require the polarization control and selectivity. |

Abstract |
We utilize an exact variational numerical procedure to calculate the ground-state properties of a polaron in the presence of Rashba and linear Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. We find that when the linear Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling approaches the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, the Van Hove singularity in the density of states will be shifted away from the bottom of the band and finally disappear when the two spin-orbit couplings are tuned to be equal. The effective mass will be suppressed; the trend will become more significant for low phonon frequency. The presence of two dominant spin-orbit couplings will make it possible to tune the effective mass with more varied observables. |
