Abstract | Bi2Se3 is a three-dimensional topological insulator which has been extensively studied because it has a single Dirac cone on the surface, inside a relatively large bulk band gap. However, the effect of two-dimensional topological insulator Bi bilayers on the properties of Bi2Se3 and vice versa, has not been explored much. Bi bilayers are often present between the quintuple layers of Bi2Se3, since (Bi2)n(Bi2Se3)m form stable ground-state structures. Moreover, Bi2Se3 is a good substrate for growing ultrathin Bi bilayers. By first-principles techniques, we first show that there is no preferable surface termination by either Bi or Se. Next, we investigate the electronic structure of Bi bilayers on top of, or inside a Bi2Se3 slab. If the Bi bilayers are on top, we observe a charge transfer to the quintuple layers that increases the binding energy of the surface Dirac cones. The extra states, originating from the Bi bilayers, were declared to form a topological Dirac cone, but here we show that these are ordinary Rashba-split states. This result, together with the appearance of a new Dirac cone that is localized slightly deeper, might necessitate the reinterpretation of several experimental results. When the Bi bilayers are located inside the Bi2Se3 slab, they tend to split the slab into two topological insulators with clear surface states. Interface states can also be observed, but an energy gap persists because of strong coupling between the neighboring quintuple layers and the Bi bilayers.

Abstract | Based on first-principles calculations, we study the structural stability of the H and T phases of monolayer MoS2 upon Li doping. Our calculations demonstrate that it is possible to stabilize a distorted T phase of MoS2 over the H phase through adsorption of Li atoms on the MoS2 surface. Through molecular dynamics and phonon calculations, we show that the T phase of MoS2 is dynamically unstable and undergoes considerable distortions. The type of distortion depends on the concentration of adsorbed Li atoms and changes from zigzag-like to diamond-like when increasing the Li doping. There exists a substantial energy barrier to transform the stable H phase to the distorted T phases, which is considerably reduced by increasing the concentration of Li atoms. We show that it is necessary that the Li atoms adsorb on both sides of the MoS2 monolayer to reduce the barrier sufficiently. Two processes are examined that allow for such two-sided adsorption, namely, penetration through the MoS2 layer and diffusion over the MoS2 surface. We show that while there is only a small barrier of 0.24 eV for surface diffusion, the amount of energy needed to pass through a pure MoS2 layer is of the order of similar or equal to 2 eV. However, when the MoS2 layer is covered with Li atoms the amount of energy that Li atoms should gain to penetrate the layer is drastically reduced and penetration becomes feasible.

Abstract | Auger processes involving the filling of holes in the valence band are thought to make important contributions to the low-energy photoelectron and secondary electron spectrum from many solids. However, measurements of the energy spectrum and the efficiency with which electrons are emitted in this process remain elusive due to a large unrelated background resulting from primary beam-induced secondary electrons. Here, we report the direct measurement of the energy spectra of electrons emitted from single layer graphene as a result of the decay of deep holes in the valence band. These measurements were made possible by eliminating competing backgrounds by employing low-energy positrons (<1.25 eV) to create valence-band holes by annihilation. Our experimental results, supported by theoretical calculations, indicate that between 80 and 100% of the deep valence-band holes in graphene are filled via an Auger transition.

Abstract | Apart from the most studied tin-oxide compounds, SnO and SnO2, intermediate states have been claimed to exist for more than a hundred years. In addition to the known homologous series (Seko et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 045702 (2008)), we here predict the existence of several new compounds with an O concentration between 50 % (SnO) and 67 % (SnO2). All these intermediate compounds are constructed from removing one or more (101) oxygen layers of SnO2. Since the van der Waals (vdW) interaction is known to be important for the Sn-Sn interlayer distances, we use a vdW-corrected functional, and compare these results with results obtained with PBE and hybrid functionals. We present the electronic properties of the intermediate structures and we observe a decrease of the band gap when (i) the O concentration increases and (ii) more SnO-like units are present for a given concentration. The contribution of the different atoms to the valence and conduction band is also investigated.

Abstract | Anatase nanosheets with exposed {001} facets have gained increasing interest for photocatalytic applications. To fully understand the structure-to-activity relation, combined experimental and computational methods have been exploited. Anatase nanosheets were prepared under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of fluorine ions. High resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy was used to fully characterize the synthesized material, confirming the TiO2 nanosheet morphology. Moreover, the surface structure and composition of a single nanosheet could be determined by annular bright-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ABF-STEM) and STEM electron energy loss spectroscopy (STEM-EELS). The photocatalytic activity was tested for the decomposition of organic dyes rhodamine 6G and methyl orange and compared to a reference TiO2 anatase sample. The anatase nanosheets with exposed {001} facets revealed a significantly lower photocatalytic activity compared to the reference. In order to understand the mechanism for the catalytic performance, and to investigate the role of the presence of F−, light-induced electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments were performed. The EPR results are in agreement with TEM, proving the presence of Ti3+ species close to the surface of the sample and allowing the analysis of the photoinduced formation of paramagnetic species. Further, ab initio calculations of the anisotropic effective mass of electrons and electron holes in anatase show a very high effective mass of electrons in the [001] direction, having a negative impact on the mobility of electrons toward the {001} surface and thus the photocatalysis. Finally, motivated by the experimental results that indicate the presence of fluorine atoms at the surface, we performed ab initio calculations to determine the position of the band edges in anatase slabs with different terminations of the {001} surface. The presence of fluorine atoms near the surface is shown to strongly shift down the band edges, which indicates another reason why it can be expected that the prepared samples with a large amount of {001} surface, but with fluorine atoms near the surface, show only a low photocatalytic activity. |

Abstract | Although there is strong theoretical and experimental evidence for electron-hole superfluidity in separated sheets of electrons and holes at low T, extending superfluidity to high T is limited by strong two-dimensional fluctuations and Kosterlitz-Thouless effects. We show this limitation can be overcome using a superlattice of alternating electron- and hole-doped semiconductor monolayers. The superfluid transition in a three-dimensional superlattice is not topological, and for strong electron-hole pair coupling, the transition temperature T-c can be at room temperature. As a quantitative illustration, we show T-c can reach 270 K for a superfluid in a realistic superlattice of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers.

Abstract | Additives in semiconductor metal oxides are commonly used to improve sensing behavior of gas sensors. Due to complicated effects of additives on the materials microstructure, adsorption sites and reactivity to target gases the sensing mechanism with modified metal oxides is a matter of thorough research. Herein, we establish the promoting effect of nanocrystalline zinc oxide modification by 1-7 at.% of indium on the sensitivity to CO gas due to improved nanostructure dispersion and concentration of active sites. The sensing materials were synthesized via an aqueous coprecipitation route. Materials composition, particle size and BET area were evaluated using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption isotherms, high-resolution electron microscopy techniques and EDX-mapping. Surface species of chemisorbed oxygen, OH-groups, and acid sites were characterized by probe molecule techniques and infrared spectroscopy. It was found that particle size of zinc oxide decreased and the BET area increased with the amount of indium oxide. The additive was observed as amorphous indium oxide segregated on agglomerated ZnO nanocrystals. The measured concentration of surface species was higher on In2O3-modified zinc oxide. With the increase of indium oxide content, the sensor response of ZnO/In2O3 to CO was improved. Using in situ infrared spectroscopy, it was shown that oxidation of CO molecules was enhanced on the modified zinc oxide surface. The effect of modifier was attributed to promotion of surface OH-groups and enhancement of CO oxidation on the segregated indium ions, as suggested by DFT in previous work.

Abstract | Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the chemical functionalization of a graphene-like monolayer of siliconsilicenewith B, N, Al, or P atoms. The structural, electronic, magnetic, and vibrational properties are reported. The most preferable adsorption sites are found to be valley, bridge, valley and hill sites for B, N, Al, and P adatoms, respectively. All the relaxed systems with adsorbed/substituted atoms exhibit metallic behavior with strongly bonded B, N, Al, and P atoms accompanied by an appreciable electron transfer from silicene to the B, N, and P adatom/substituent. The Al atoms exhibit opposite charge transfer, with n-type doping of silicene and weaker bonding. The adatoms/substituents induce characteristic branches in the phonon spectrum of silicene, which can be probed by Raman measurements. Using molecular dynamics, we found that the systems under study are stable up to at least T=500 K. Our results demonstrate that silicene has a very reactive and functionalizable surface.

Abstract | Ab initio calculations within the density functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the stability and electronic properties of fluorinated bilayer graphene (bilayer fluorographene). A comparison is made to previously investigated graphane, bilayer graphane, and fluorographene. Bilayer fluorographene is found to be a much more stable material than bilayer graphane. Its electronic band structure is similar to that of monolayer fluorographene, but its electronic band gap is significantly larger (about 1 eV). We also calculate the effective masses around the Gamma-point for fluorographene and bilayer fluorographene and find that they are isotropic, in contrast to earlier reports. Furthermore, it is found that bilayer fluorographene is almost as strong as graphene, as its 2D Young's modulus is approximately 300 N m(-1).

Abstract | A thorough investigation of three-dimensional kagome lattices of group IV elements is performed with first-principles calculations. The investigated kagome lattices of silicon and germanium are found to be of similar stability as the recently proposed carbon kagome lattice. Carbon and silicon kagome lattices are both direct-gap semiconductors but they have qualitatively different electronic band structures. While direct optical transitions between the valence and conduction bands are allowed in the carbon case, no such transitions can be observed for silicon. The kagome lattice of germanium exhibits semimetallic behavior but can be transformed into a semiconductor after compression.

Abstract | A theoretical and experimental study of the work function of few-layer graphene is reported. The influence of the number of layers on the work function is investigated in the presence of a substrate, a molecular dipole layer, and combinations of the two. The work function of few-layer graphene is almost independent of the number of layers with only a difference between monolayer and multilayer graphene of about 60 meV. In the presence of a charge-donating substrate the charge distribution is found to decay exponentially away from the substrate and this is directly reflected in the work function of few-layer graphene. A dipole layer changes the work function only when placed in between the substrate and few-layer graphene through a change of the charge transfer between the two.

Abstract | A technique to measure the band gap of dielectric materials with high refractive index by means of energy electron loss spectroscopy (EELS) is presented. The technique relies on the use of a circular (Bessel) aperture and suppresses Cherenkov losses and surface-guided light modes by enforcing a momentum transfer selection. The technique also strongly suppresses the elastic zero loss peak, making the acquisition, interpretation and signal to noise ratio of low loss spectra considerably better, especially for excitations in the first few eV of the EELS spectrum. Simulations of the low loss inelastic electron scattering probabilities demonstrate the beneficial influence of the Bessel aperture in this setup even for high accelerating voltages. The importance of selecting the optimal experimental convergence and collection angles is highlighted. The effect of the created off-axis acquisition conditions on the selection of the transitions from valence to conduction bands is discussed in detail on a simplified isotropic two band model. This opens the opportunity for deliberately selecting certain transitions by carefully tuning the microscope parameters. The suggested approach is experimentally demonstrated and provides good signal to noise ratio and interpretable band gap signals on reference samples of diamond, GaN and AlN while offering spatial resolution in the nm range. Abstract | A perpendicular electric field applied to multilayers of graphene modifies the electronic structure near the K point and may induce an energy gap in the electronic spectrum. This gap is tunable by the gate voltage and its size depends on the number of layers. We use a tight-binding approach to calculate the band structure and include a self-consistent calculation in order to obtain the density of charge carriers. Results are presented for systems consisting of three and four layers of graphene. The effect of the circular asymmetry of the band structure on the gap is critically examined.

Abstract | A parabolic quantum dot (QD) as realized by biasing nanostructured gates on bilayer graphene is investigated in the presence of electron-electron interaction. The energy spectrum and the phase diagram reveal unexpected transitions as a function of a magnetic field. For example, in contrast to semiconductor QDs, we find a valley transition rather than only the usual singlet-triplet transition in the ground state of the interacting system. The origin of these features can be traced to the valley degree of freedom in bilayer graphene. These transitions have important consequences for cyclotron resonance experiments.

Abstract | A novel spintronic nanodevice is proposed that is able to manipulate the single heavy-hole spin state in a coherent manner. It can act as a single quantum logic gate. The heavy-hole spin transformations are realized by transporting the hole around closed loops defined by metal gates deposited on top of the nanodevice. The device exploits Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction, which translates the spatial motion of the hole into a rotation of the spin. The proposed quantum gate operates on subnanosecond time scales and requires only the application of a weak static voltage which allows for addressing heavy-hole spin qubits individually. Our results are supported by quantum mechanical time-dependent calculations within the four-band Luttinger-Kohn model.

Abstract | A first-principles study of the structural and electronic properties of carbon impurities in CuInSe2 and CuGaSe2 is presented. Carbon is present in organic molecules in the precursor solutions used in non-vacuum growth methods for CuInSe2 and CuGaSe2 based photovoltaic cells. These growth methods make more efficient use of material, time, and energy than traditional vacuum methods. The formation energies of several carbon impurities are calculated using the hybrid HSE06 functional. C Cu acts as a shallow donor, CIn and interstitial C yield deep donor levels in CuInSe2, while in CuGaSe2 CGa and interstitial C act as deep amphoteric defects. So, these defects reduce the majority carrier (hole) concentration in p-type CuInSe2 and CuGaSe2 by compensating the acceptor levels. The deep defects are likely to act as recombination centers for the photogenerated charge carriers and are thus detrimental for the performance of the photovoltaic cells. On the other hand, the formation energies of the carbon impurities are high, even under C-rich growth conditions. Thus, few C impurities will form in CuInSe2 and CuGaSe2 in thermodynamic equilibrium. However, the deposition of the precursor solution in non-vacuum growth methods presents conditions far from thermodynamic equilibrium. In this case, our calculations show that C impurities formed in non-equilibrium tend to segregate from CuInSe2 and CuGaSe2 by approaching thermodynamic equilibrium, e.g., via thorough annealing.

Abstract | A combined experimental and first-principles study is performed to study the origin of conductivity in ZnO:Al nanoparticles synthesized under controlled conditions via a reflux route using benzylamine as a solvent. The experimental characterization of the samples by Raman, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and conductivity measurements indicates that upon annealing in nitrogen, the Al atoms at interstitial positions migrate to the substitutional positions, creating at the same time Zn interstitials. We provide evidence for the fact that the formed complex of AlZn and Zni corresponds to the origin of the Knight shifted peak (KS) we observe in 27Al NMR. As far as we know, the role of this complex has not been discussed in the literature to date. However, our first-principles calculations show that such a complex is indeed energetically favoured over the isolated Al interstitial positions. In our calculations we also address the charge state of the Al interstitials. Further, Zn interstitials can migrate from Al_Zn and possibly also form Zn clusters, leading to the observed increased conductivity. |

Abstract | A classical two-dimensional (2D) model for an artificial atom is used to make a numerical exact study of elastic and nonelastic scattering. Interesting differences in the scattering angle distribution between this model and the well-known Rutherford scattering are found in the small energy and/or small impact parameter scattering regime. For scattering off a classical 2D hydrogen atom different phenomena such as ionization, exchange of particles, and inelastic scattering can occur. A scattering regime diagram is constructed as function of the impact parameter (b) and the initial velocity (v) of the incoming particle. In a small regime of the (b,v) space the system exhibits chaos, which is studied in more detail. Analytic expressions for the scattering angle are given in the high impact parameter asymptotic limit.

Abstract | <script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('We present an advanced method to study spin fluctuations in superconductors quantitatively and entirely from first principles. This method can be generally applied to materials where electron-phonon coupling and spin fluctuations coexist. We employ it here to examine the recently synthesized superconductor iron tetraboride (FeB4) with experimental T-c similar to 2.4 K [H. Gou et al., Phys. Rev. Lett, 111, 157002 (2013)]. We prove that FeB4 is particularly prone to ferromagnetic spin fluctuations due to the presence of iron, resulting in a large Stoner interaction strength, I = 1.5 eV, as calculated from first principles. The other important factor is its Fermi surface that consists of three separate sheets, among which two are nested ellipsoids. The resulting susceptibility has a ferromagnetic peak around q = 0, from which we calculated the repulsive interaction between Cooper pair electrons using the random phase approximation. Subsequently, we combined the electron-phonon interaction calculated from first principles with the spin fluctuation interaction in fully anisotropic Eliashberg theory calculations. We show that the resulting superconducting gap spectrum is conventional, yet very strongly depleted due to coupling to the spin fluctuations. The critical temperature decreases from T-c = 41 K, if they are not taken into account, to T-c = 1.7 K, in good agreement with the experimental value.'));

Abstract | <script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('Two-dimensional materials are known to harbour properties very different from those of their bulk counterparts. Recent years have seen the rise of atomically thin superconductors, with a caveat that superconductivity is strongly depleted unless enhanced by specific substrates, intercalants or adatoms. Surprisingly, the role in superconductivity of electronic states originating from simple free surfaces of two-dimensional materials has remained elusive to date. Here, based on first-principles calculations, anisotropic Eliashberg theory, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we show that surface states in few-monolayer MgB2 make a major contribution to the superconducting gap spectrum and density of states, clearly distinct from the widely known, bulk-like sigma-and pi-gaps. As a proof of principle, we predict and measure the gap opening on the magnesium-based surface band up to a critical temperature as high as similar to 30 K for merely six monolayers thick MgB2. These findings establish free surfaces as an unavoidable ingredient in understanding and further tailoring of superconductivity in atomically thin materials.'));

Abstract | <script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('The breakthrough of 3D audio has been hampered by the lack of personalized head-related transfer functions (HRTF) required to create realistic 3D audio environments using headphones. In this paper we present a new method for the user to personalize his/her HRTF, similar to the measurement in an anechoic room, yet it is low-cost and can be carried out at home. We compare the resulting HRTFs with those measured in an anechoic room. Subjecting the participants to a virtual localization experiment, we show that they perform significantly better when using their personalized HRTF, compared to a generic HRTF.
