Abstract |
Gold nanorod supercrystals have been widely employed for the detection of relevant bioanalytes with detection limits ranging from nano- to picomolar levels,
confirming the promising nature of these structures for biosensing. Even though a relationship between the height of the supercrystal (i.e., the number of stacked nanorod layers)and the enhancement factor has been proposed, no systematic
study has been reported. In order to tackle this problem, we prepared gold nanorod supercrystals with varying numbers of stacked layers and analyzed them extensively by atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy and surface enhanced Raman scattering. The experimental results were compared to numerical
simulations performed on real-size supercrystals composed of thousands of nanorod building blocks. Analysis of the hot spot distribution in the simulated supercrystals showed the presence of standing waves that were distributed at different depths, depending on the number of layers in each supercrystal. On the basis of these theoretical results, we interpreted the experimental
data in terms of analyte penetration into the topmost layer only, which indicates that diffusion to the interior of the supercrystals would be crucial if the complete field enhancement produced by the stacked nanorods is to be exploited. We propose that our conclusions will be of high relevance in the design of next generation plasmonic devices. |

Abstract |
Nanocrystalline InP quantum dots (QDs) hold promise for heavy-metal-free optoelectronic applications due to their bright and size tunable emission in the visible range. Photochemical stability and high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield are obtained by a diversity of epitaxial shells around the InP core. To understand and optimize the emission line shapes, the exciton fine structure of InP core/shell QD systems needs be investigated. Here, we study the exciton fine structure of InP/ZnSe core/shell QDs with core diameters ranging from 2.9 to 3.6 nm (PL peak from 2.3 to 1.95 eV at 4 K). PL decay measurements as a function of temperature in the 10 mK to 300 K range show that the lowest exciton fine structure state is a dark state, from which radiative recombination is assisted by coupling to confined acoustic phonons with energies ranging from 4 to 7 meV, depending on the core diameter. Circularly polarized fluorescence line-narrowing (FLN) spectroscopy at 4 K under high magnetic fields (up to 30 T) demonstrates that radiative recombination from the dark F = +/- 2 state involves acoustic and optical phonons, from both the InP core and the ZnSe shell. Our data indicate that the highest intensity FLN peak is an acoustic phonon replica rather than a zero-phonon line, implying that the energy separation observed between the F = +/- 1 state and the highest intensity peak in the FLN spectra (6 to 16 meV, depending on the InP core size) is larger than the splitting between the dark and bright fine structure exciton states. |

Abstract |
Lead halide perovskites have been widely explored
in the field of photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes, and lasers due to
their outstanding linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties.
But, the presence of lead toxicity and low chemical stability remain
serious concerns. Lead-free double perovskite with excellent
optical properties and chemical stability could be an alternative.
However, proper examination of the NLO properties of such a
material is crucial to identify their utility for future nonlinear device
applications. Herein, we have made use of femtosecond (fs) Z-scan
technique to explore the NLO properties of Cs2AgIn0.9Bi0.1Cl6
nanocrystals (NCs). Our measurements suggest that under
nonresonant fs excitation, perovskite NCs exhibit strong twophoton
absorption (TPA). The observed saturation of TPA at high
light intensities has been explained by a customized model. Furthermore, we have demonstrated a change in the nonlinear refractive
index of the NCs under varying input intensities. The strong TPA absorption of lead-free double perovskite NCs could be used for
Kerr nonlinearity-based nonlinear applications such as optical shutters for picosecond lasers. |

Abstract |
Chemically synthesized metal nanoparticles with morphological chiral features are known to exhibit strong circular dichroism. However, we still lack understanding of the correlation between morphological and chiroptical features of plasmonic nanoparticles. To shed light on that question, single nanoparticle experiments are required. We performed photothermal circular dichroism measurements of single chiral and achiral gold nanoparticles and correlated the chiroptical response to the 3D morphology of the same nanoparticles retrieved by electron tomography. In contrast to an ensemble measurement, we show that individual particles within the ensemble display a broad distribution of strength and handedness of circular dichroism signals. Whereas obvious structural chiral features, such as helical wrinkles, translate into chiroptical ones, nanoparticles with less obvious chiral morphological features can also display strong circular dichroism signals. Interestingly, we find that even seemingly achiral nanoparticles can display large g-factors. The origin of this circular dichroism signal is discussed in terms of plasmonics and other potentially relevant factors. |

Abstract |
Wearable electrochemical sensors capable of noninvasive monitoring of chemical markers represent a rapidly emerging digital-health technology. Recent advances toward wearable continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems have ignited tremendous interest in expanding such sensor technology to other important fields. This article reviews for the first time wearable electrochemical sensors for monitoring therapeutic drugs and drugs of abuse. This rapidly emerging class of drug-sensing wearable devices addresses the growing demand for personalized medicine, toward improved therapeutic outcomes while minimizing the side effects of drugs and the related medical expenses. Continuous, noninvasive monitoring of therapeutic drugs within bodily fluids empowers clinicians and patients to correlate the pharmacokinetic properties with optimal outcomes by realizing patient-specific dose regulation and tracking dynamic changes in pharmacokinetics behavior while assuring the medication adherence of patients. Furthermore, wearable electrochemical drug monitoring devices can also serve as powerful screening tools in the hands of law enforcement agents to combat drug trafficking and support on-site forensic investigations. The review covers various wearable form factors developed for noninvasive monitoring of therapeutic drugs in different body fluids and toward on-site screening of drugs of abuse. The future prospects of such wearable drug monitoring devices are presented with the ultimate goals of introducing accurate real-time drug monitoring protocols and autonomous closed-loop platforms toward precise dose regulation and optimal therapeutic outcomes. Finally, current unmet challenges and existing gaps are discussed for motivating future technological innovations regarding personalized therapy. The current pace of developments and the tremendous market opportunities for such wearable drug monitoring platforms are expected to drive intense future research and
commercialization efforts. |

Abstract |
The use of a photocatalyst (photosensitizer) which produces singlet oxygen instead of enzymes for oxidizing analytes creates opportunities for designing cost-efficient and sensitive photoelectrochemical sensors. We report that perfluoroisopropyl-substituted zinc phthalocyanine (F64PcZn) interacts specifically with a complex phenolic compound, the antibiotic rifampicin (RIF), but not with hydroquinone or another complex phenolic compound, the antibiotic doxycycline. The specificity is imparted by the selective preconcentration of RIF in the photocatalytic layer, as revealed by electrochemical and optical measurements, complemented by molecular modeling that confirms the important role of a hydrophobic cavity formed by the iso-perfluoropropyl groups of the photocatalyst. The preconcentration effect favorably enhances the RIF photoelectrochemical detection limit as well as sensitivity to nanomolar (ppb) concentrations, LOD = 7 nM (6 ppb) and 2.8 A.M-1.cm(-2), respectively. The selectivity to RIF, retained in the photosensitizer layer, is further enhanced by the selective removal of all unretained phenols via simple washing of the electrodes with pure buffer. The utility of the sensor for analyzing municipal wastewater was demonstrated. This first demonstration of enhanced selectivity and sensitivity due to intrinsic interactions of a molecular photocatalyst (photosensitizer) with an analyte, without use of a biorecognition element, may allow the design of related, robust, simple, and viable sensors. |

Abstract |
Plasma technology provides a sustainable, fossil-free method for N2 fixation, i.e., the conversion of inert atmospheric N2 into valuable substances, such as NOx or ammonia. In this work, we present a novel gliding arc plasmatron at atmospheric pressure for NOx production at different N2/O2 gas feed ratios, offering a promising NOx yield of 1.5% with an energy cost of 3.6 MJ/mol NOx produced. To explain the underlying mechanisms, we present a chemical kinetics model, validated by experiments, which provides insight into the NOx formation pathways and into the ambivalent role of the vibrational kinetics. This allows us to pinpoint the factors limiting the yield and energy cost, which can help to further improve the process. |

Abstract |
Latest trends in dental restorative ceramics involve the development of full-contour 3Y-TZP ceramics which can avoid chipping of veneering porcelains. Among the challenges are the low translucency and the hydrothermal stability of 3Y-TZP ceramics. In this work, different trivalent oxides (Al2O3, Sc2O3, Nd2O3 and La2O3) were selected to dope 3Y-TZP ceramics. Results show that dopant segregation was a key factor to design hydrothermally stable and high-translucent 3Y-TZP ceramics and the cation dopant radius could be used as a controlling parameter. A large trivalent dopant, oversized as compared to Zr4+, exhibiting strong segregation at the ZrO2 grain boundary was preferred. The introduction of 0.2 mol% La2O3 in conventional 0.10.25 wt.% Al2O3-doped 3Y-TZP resulted in an excellent combination of high translucency and superior hydrothermal stability, while retaining excellent mechanical properties. |

Abstract |
We calculated the temperature dependence of the Debye-Waller factors for a variety of group IV, III-V and II-VI semiconductors from 0.1 to 1000 K. The approach used to fit the temperature dependence is described and resulting fit parameters are tabulated for each material. The Debye-Waller factors are deduced from generalized phonon densities of states which were derived from first principles using the WIEN2k and the ABINIT codes. |

Abstract |
We computed Debye-Waller factors in the temperature range from 0.1 to 1000 K for AlN, GaN, InN, ZnO and CdO with the wurtzite-type structure. The Debye-Waller factors were derived from phonon densities of states obtained from Hellmann-Feynman forces computed within the density-functional-theory formalism. The temperature dependences of the Debye-Waller factors were fitted and fit parameters are given. |

Abstract |
The crystal structure solution of modulated compounds is often very challenging, even using the well established methodology of single-crystal X-ray crystallography. This task becomes even more difficult for materials that cannot be prepared in a single-crystal form, so that only polycrystalline powders are available. This paper illustrates that the combined application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and powder diffraction is a possible solution to the problem. Using examples of anion-deficient perovskites modulated by periodic crystallographic shear planes, it is demonstrated what kind of local structural information can be obtained using various TEM techniques and how this information can be implemented in the crystal structure refinement against the powder diffraction data. The following TEM methods are discussed: electron diffraction (selected area electron diffraction, precession electron diffraction), imaging (conventional high-resolution TEM imaging, high-angle annular dark-field and annular bright-field scanning transmission electron microscopy) and state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques (atomic resolution mapping using energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and electron energy loss spectroscopy). |

Abstract |
The incommensurately modulated scheelite-like KSm( MoO4)(2) structure has been refined in the monoclinic superspace group I2/b(alpha beta 0)00 by the Rietveld method on the basis of synchrotron radiation powder diffraction data. The systematic broadening of satellite reflections has been accounted for by applying anisotropic microstrain line-broadening. The microstructure has been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The partial disorder of the K and Sm cations in the A position is best approximated by a combination of harmonic and complex crenel functions with (0.952Sm + 0.048K) and (0.952K + 0.048Sm) atomic domains. This combination yields a compositional wave distribution from {KMoO4} to {SmMoO4} observed in the ab structure projection along q. The specific features of KSm(MoO4)(2) and degree of the A-cation ordering are discussed in comparison with the previously reported structure of KNd(MoO4)(2). |

Abstract |
Bi2Se3is a thermoelectric material and a topological insulator. It is slightly conducting in its bulk due to the presence of defects and by controlling the defects different physical properties can be fine tuned. However, studies of the defects in this material are often contradicting or inconclusive. Here, the defect structure of Bi2Se3is studied with a combination of techniques: high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM), high-resolution energy-dispersive X-ray (HR-EDX) spectroscopy, precession electron diffraction tomography (PEDT), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and first-principles calculations using density functional theory (DFT). Based on these results, not only the observed defects are discussed, but also the discrepancies in results or possibilities across the techniques. STEM and EDX revealed interstitial defects with mainly Bi character in an octahedral coordination in the van der Waals gap, independent of the applied sample preparation method (focused ion beam milling or cryo-crushing). The inherent character of these defects is supported by their observation in the structure refinement of the EDT data. Moreover, the occupancy probability of the defects determined by EDT is inversely proportional to their corresponding DFT calculated formation energies. STEM also showed the migration of some atoms across and along the van der Waals gap. The kinetic barriers calculated using DFT suggest that some paths are possible at room temperature, while others are most probably beam induced. |

Abstract |
Synthetic and naturally occurring forms of tricopper orthotellurate, (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV (the mineral mcalpineite) have been investigated by 3D electron diffraction (3D ED), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopic measurements. As a result of the diffraction analyses, (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV is shown to occur in two polytypes. The higher-symmetric (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV-1C polytype is cubic, space group 1a (3) over bar, with a = 9.537 (1) angstrom and V = 867.4 (3) angstrom(3) as reported in previous studies. The 1C polytype is a well characterized structure consisting of alternating layers of (CuO6)-O-II octahedra and both (CuO6)-O-II and (TeO6)-O-VI octahedra in a patchwork arrangement. The structure of the lower-symmetric orthorhombic (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV-2O polytype was determined for the first time in this study by 3D ED and verified by Rietveld refinement. The 2O polytype crystallizes in space group Pcca, with a = 9.745 (3) angstrom, b = 9.749 (2) angstrom, c = 9.771 (2) angstrom and V = 928.3 (4) angstrom(3) . High-precision XRPD data were also collected on (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV-2O to verify the lower-symmetric structure by performing a Rietveld refinement. The resultant structure is identical to that determined by 3D ED, with unit-cell parameters a = 9.56157 (19) angstrom, b = 9.55853 (11) angstrom, c = 9.62891 (15) angstrom and V = 880.03 (2) angstrom(3) . The lower symmetry of the 2O polytype is a consequence of a different cation ordering arrangement, which involves the movement of every second (CuO6)-O-II and (TeO6)-O-VI octahedral layer by (1/4, 1/4, 0), leading to an offset of (TeO6)-O-VI and (CuO6)-O-II octahedra in every second layer giving an ABAB* stacking arrangement. Syntheses of (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV showed that low-temperature (473 K) hydrothermal conditions generally produce the 2O polytype. XRPD measurements in combination with Raman spectroscopic analysis showed that most natural mcalpineite is the orthorhombic 2O polytype. Both XRPD and Raman spectroscopy measurements may be used to differentiate between the two polytypes of (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV. In Raman spectroscopy, (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV-1C has a single strong band around 730 cm(-1), whereas (Cu3TeO6)-Te-II-O-IV-2O shows a broad double maximum with bands centred around 692 and 742 cm(-1). |

Abstract |
Multiphase steels utilising composite strengthening may be further strengthened via grain refinement or precipitation by the addition of microalloying elements. In this study a Nb microalloyed steel comprising martensite, bainite and retained austenite has been studied. By means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) we have investigated the size distribution and the structural properties of (Nb, Ti)N and NbC precipitates, their occurrence in the various steel phases, and their relationship with the Fe matrix. (Nb, Ti)N precipitates were found in ferrite, martensite, and bainite, while NbC precipitates were found only in ferrite. All NbC precipitates were found to be small (520 nm in size) and to have a face centred cubic (fcc) crystal structure with lattice parameter a = 4.36 ± 0.05 Å. In contrast, the (Nb, Ti)N precipitates were found to have a broader size range (5150 nm) and to have a fcc crystal structure with lattice parameter a = 8.09 ± 0.05 Å. While the NbC precipitates were found to be randomly oriented, the (Nb, Ti)N precipitates have a well-defined NishiyamaWasserman orientation relationship with the ferrite matrix. An analysis of the lattice mismatch suggests that the latter precipitates have a high potential for effective strengthening. Density functional theory calculations were performed for various stoichiometries of NbCx and NbxTiyNz phases and the comparison with experimental data indicates that both the carbides and nitrides are deficient in C and N content. |

Abstract |
Uniaxial straining experiments were performed on a rolled and annealed Si-alloyed TRIP (transformation-induced plasticity) steel sheet in order to assess the role of its microstructure on the mechanical stability of austenite grains with respect to martensitic transformation. The transformation behavior of individual metastable austenite grains was studied both at the surface and inside the bulk of the material using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) by deforming the samples to different strain levels up to about 20%. A comparison of the XRD and EBSD results revealed that the retained austenite grains at the surface have a stronger tendency to transform than the austenite grains in the bulk of the material. The deformation-induced changes of individual austenite grains before and after straining were monitored with EBSD. Three different types of austenite grains can be distinguished that have different transformation behaviors: austenite grains at the grain boundaries between ferrite grains, twinned austenite grains, and embedded austenite grains that are completely surrounded by a single ferrite grain. It was found that twinned austenite grains and the austenite grains present at the grain boundaries between larger ferrite grains typically transform first, i.e. are less stable, in contrast to austenite grains that are completely embedded in a larger ferrite grain. In the latter case, straining leads to rotations of the harder austenite grain within the softer ferrite matrix before the austenite transforms into martensite. The analysis suggests that austenite grain rotation behavior is also a significant factor contributing to enhancement of the ductility. (C) 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract |
The mechanical behaviour of thin nanocrystalline palladium films with an ∼30 nm in plane grain size has been characterized on chip under uniaxial tension. The films exhibit a large strain hardening capacity and a significant increase in the strength with decreasing thickness. Transmission electron microscopy has revealed the presence of a moderate density of growth nanotwins interacting with dislocations. A semi-analytical grain aggregate model is proposed to investigate the impact of different contributions to the flow behaviour, involving the effect of twins, of grain size and of the presence of a thin surface layer. This model provides guidelines to optimizing the strength/ductility ratio of the films. |

Abstract |
The atomic configurations at macrotwin interfaces between microtwinned martensite plates in Ni65Al35 material are investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The observed structures are interpreted in view of possible formation mechanisms for these interfaces. A distinction is made between cases in which the microtwins, originating from mutually perpendicular {110} austenite planes, enclose a final angle larger or smaller than 90degrees. Two different configurations, a crossing and a step type are described. Depending on the actual case, tapering, bending and tip splitting of the smaller microtwinvariants are observed. The most reproducible deformations occur in a region of approximately 5-10 nm width around the interface while a variety of structural defects are observed further away from the interface. These structures and deformations are interpreted in terms of the coalescence of two separately nucleated microtwinned martensite plates and the need to accommodate remaining stresses. Abstract |
The three-dimensional size, morphology and distribution of Ni4Ti3 precipitates in a Ni50.8Ti49.2 polycrystalline shape memory alloy with a heterogeneous microstructure have been investigated using a focused ion beam/scanning electron microscopy slice-and-view procedure. The mean volume, central plane diameter, thickness, aspect ratio and sphericity of the precipitates in the grain interior as well as near to the grain boundary were measured and/or calculated. The morphology of the precipitates was quantified by determining the equivalent ellipsoids with the same moments of inertia and classified according to the Zingg scheme. Also, the pair distribution functions describing the three-dimensional distributions were obtained from the coordinates of the precipitate mass centres. Based on this new data it is suggested that the existence of the heterogeneous microstructure could be due to a very small concentration gradient in the grains of the homogenized material and that the resulting multistage martensitic transformation originates in strain effects related to the size of the precipitates and scale differences of the available B2 matrix in between the precipitates. |

Abstract |
The nanoscale plasticity mechanisms activated during hydriding cycles in sputtered nanocrystalline Pd films have been investigated ex-situ using advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques. The internal stress developing within the films during hydriding has been monitored in-situ. Results showed that in Pd films hydrided to β-phase, local plasticity was mainly controlled by dislocation activity in spite of the small grain size. Changes of the grain size distribution and the crystallographic texture have not been observed. In contrast, significant microstructural changes were not observed in Pd films hydrided to α-phase. Moreover, the effect of hydrogen loading on the nature and density of dislocations has been investigated using aberration-corrected TEM. Surprisingly, a high density of shear type stacking faults has been observed after dehydriding, indicating a significant effect of hydrogen on the nucleation energy barriers of Shockley partial dislocations. Ab-initio calculations of the effect of hydrogen on the intrinsic stable and unstable stacking fault energies of palladium confirm the experimental observations. |

Abstract |
The hydrothermal aging stability of 3Y-TZP-xM2O3 (M = La, Nd, Sc) was investigated as a function of 0.02–5 mol% M2O3 dopant content and correlated to the overall phase content, t-ZrO2 lattice parameters, grain size distribution, grain boundary chemistry and ionic conductivity.
The increased aging stability with increasing Sc2O3 content and the optimum content of 0.4–0.6 mol% Nd2O3 or 0.2–0.4 mol% La2O3, resulting in the highest aging resistance, could be directly related to the constituent phases and the lattice parameters of the remaining tetragonal zirconia.
At low M2O3 dopant contents ≤0.4 mol%, the different aging behavior of tetragonal zirconia was attributed to the defect structure of the zirconia grain boundary which was influenced by the dopant cation radius. It was observed that the grain boundary ionic resistivity and the aging resistance followed the same trend: La3+ > Nd3+ > Al3+ > Sc3+, proving that hydrothermal aging is driven by the diffusion of water-derived mobile species through the oxygen vacancies. Accordingly, we elucidated the underlying mechanism by which a larger trivalent cation segregating at the zirconia grain boundary resulted in a higher aging resistance. |

Abstract |
A dislocation-based crystal plasticity model is developed in order to study the mechanical and creep/ relaxation behaviour of polycrystalline metallic thin films. The model accounts for the confinement of plasticity due to grain boundaries and for the anisotropy of individual grains, as well as for the significant viscoplastic effects associated to dislocation dominated thermally activated mechanisms. Numerical predictions are assessed based on experimental tensile test followed by relaxation on freestanding Pd films, based on an on-chip test technique. The dislocation-based mechanism assumption captures all the experimental trends, including the stress strain response, the relaxation behaviour and the dislocation density evolution, confirming the dominance of a dislocation driven deformation mechanism for the present Pd films with high defects density. The model has also been used to address some original experimental evidences involving back stresses, Bauschinger effect, backward creep and strain recovery. (C) 2016 Acta Materialia Inc. Abstract |
Motivated by recent studies demonstrating a high strength – high ductility potential of nano-scale metallic glass samples, the mechanical response of freestanding Zr65Ni35 film with sub-micron thickness has been investigated by combining advanced on-chip tensile testing and electron microscopy. Large deformation up to 15% is found for specimen thicknesses below 500 nm with variations depending on specimen size and frame compliance. The deformation is homogenous until fracture, with no evidence of shear banding. The yield stress is doubled when decreasing the specimen cross-section, reaching ~3 GPa for small cross-sections. The fracture strain variation is related to both the stability of the test device and to the specimen size. The study concludes on clear disconnect between the mechanisms controlling the onset of plasticity and the fracture process. |

Abstract |
Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanowalls were deposited by unbalanced radio frequency sputtering on (100)-oriented silicon, nanocrystalline diamond films, and amorphous silicon nitride (Si3N4) membranes. The hBN nanowall structures were found to grow vertically with respect to the surface of all of the substrates. To provide further insight into the nucleation phase and possible lattice distortion of the deposited films, the structural properties of the different interfaces were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. For Si and Si3N4 substrates, turbostratic and amorphous BN phases form a clear transition zone between the substrate and the actual hBN phase of the bulk nanowalls. However, surprisingly, the presence of these phases was suppressed at the interface with a nanocrystalline diamond film, leading to a direct coupling of hBN with the diamond surface, independent of the vertical orientation of the diamond grain. To explain these observations, a growth mechanism is proposed in which the hydrogen terminated surface of the nanocrystalline diamond film leads to a rapid formation of the hBN phase during the initial stages of growth, contrary to the case of Si and Si3N4 substrates.
