Abstract: A gliding arc plasmatron (GAP), which is very promising for purification and gas conversion,
is characterized in nitrogen using optical emission spectroscopy and high-speed photography,
because the cross sections of electron impact excitation of N 2 are well known. The gas
temperature (of about 5500 K), the electron density (up to 1.5 × 10 15 cm −3 ) and the reduced
electric field (of about 37 Td) are determined using an absolutely calibrated intensified charge-
coupled device (ICCD) camera, equipped with an in-house made optical arrangement for
simultaneous two-wavelength diagnostics, adapted to the transient behavior of a GA channel
in turbulent gas flow. The intensities of nitrogen molecular emission bands, N 2 (C–B,0–0) as
well as N +
2 (B–X,0–0), are measured simultaneously. The electron density and the reduced
electric field are determined at a spatial resolution of 30 µm, using numerical simulation and
measured emission intensities, applying the Abel inversion of the ICCD images. The temporal
behavior of the GA plasma channel and the formation of plasma plumes are studied using a
high-speed camera. Based on the determined plasma parameters, we suggest that the plasma
plume formation is due to the magnetization of electrons in the plasma channel of the GAP by
an axial magnetic field in the plasma vortex.

Abstract: The effect of ion etching on exchange bias in IrMn3/Co70Fe30 bilayers is investigated. In spite of the reduction of saturation magnetization caused by the embedding of Tr from the capping layer into the Co70Fe30 layer during the etching process, the exchange bias in samples with the same thickness of the Co70Fe30 layer is reducing in proportion to the etching power. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements revealed the emergence of an uncompensated Mn magnetization after etching, which is antiferromagnetically coupled to the ferromagnetic layer. This suggests etching induced formation of small interfacial FeMn regions which leads to the decrease of effective exchange coupling between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers.

Abstract: Recent advances in biomedical research in cancer immunotherapy have identified the use of an oxidative stress-based approach to treat cancers, which works by inducing immunogenic cell death (ICD) in cancer cells. Since the anti-cancer effects of non-thermal plasma (NTP) are largely attributed to the reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that are delivered to and generated inside the target cancer cells, it is reasonable to postulate that NTP would be an effective modality for ICD induction. NTP treatment of tumors has been shown to destroy cancer cells rapidly and, under specific treatment regimens, this leads to systemic tumorspecific immunity. The translational benefit of NTP for treatment of cancer relies on its ability to enhance the interactions between NTP-exposed minor cells and local immune cells which initiates subsequent protective immune responses. This review discusses results from recent investigations of NTP application to induce ICD in cancer cells. With further optimization of clinical devices and treatment protocols, NTP can become an essential part of the therapeutic armament against cancer.

Abstract: In polyanion cathodes, the inductive effect alters the potential of a M(n+1)+/Mn+ redox couple (M – transition metal) according to the electronegativity of the X cation in the polyanion groups (XO4m+). To manipulate the operating potential, we synthesized a series of mixed sulfate-selenate alluaudites, with structure formulas Na2+2zMn2-z(SO4)(3-x)(SeO4)(x) and Na2.81Ni1.60(SO4)(1.43)(SeO4)(1.57). Their crystal structure was determined from powder X-ray diffraction data, revealing that the Mn-based alluaudites form solid solutions with the same crystal structure for x = 0.75; 1.125 and 1.5. Na2.81Ni1.60(SO4)(1.43)(SeO4)(1.57) is isostructural to the Mn-based alluaudites. Although the Na2+2zMn2-z(SO4)(3-x)(SeO4)(x) compound with the highest selenium content demonstrates a reversible discharge capacity of 60 mAh g(-1), only a small part of this electrochemical activity can be ascribed to the Mn3+/Mn2+ redox couple. The redox potential of the Mn3+/Mn2+ pair in Na2+2zMn2-z(SO4)(3-)x(SeO4)(x) decreases with increasing values of x, in agreement with the lower electronegativity of Se compared to that of S.

Abstract: Over the past several decades the painting An Old Man in Military Costume by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (ca. 1630-31; J. Paul Getty Museum, 78.PB.246) has been the subject of a number of investigations carried out in order to better visualize a second painting beneath the surface figure. The underlying image – the head and shoulders of a man wearing a cloak – is oriented 180 degrees from the upper image and appears to be fairly complete. Scanning macro x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy reveals the face is painted with lead white and a mercury-containing pigment (likely vermilion), and the cloak is painted with a copper-containing pigment. Following the revelation and digital color reconstruction of the underlying figure, a number of questions still remained. Here, through the use of infrared reflectance imaging spectroscopy (i.e., hyperspectral imaging) and macro-XRF imaging spectroscopy, together with cross-sections taken from targeted areas, the sequence of painting in both compositions was explored. Of particular interest was the discovery of evidence of multiple attempts to situate the lower figure, and the subsequent application of a blocking-out layer over the lower figure before the artist rotated the panel and executed the upper figure. In addition, examination of the placement of the two images on the panel adds to our understanding of the subtle complexities of Rembrandt's working process. L'image sous-jacente – la tete et les epaules d'un homme vetu d'une cape – est orientee a 180 degres de de l'image du vieil homme, et elle semble assez complete. La spectroscopie a macro-balayage de fluorescence X (MA-XRF) revele que le visage est peint avec du blanc de plomb et un pigment contenant du mercure (comme le vermillon), et que la cape est peinte avec un pigment a base de cuivre. Plusieurs questions restaient en suspens suite a cette decouverte et a la reconstruction numerique en couleur de l'image sous-jacente. Grace a l'emploi de techniques d'imagerie comme la spectroscopie proche infrarouge (ex., imagerie hyperspectrale) et l'imagerie MA-XRF, combinees a l'analyse de coupes stratigraphiques prelevees a des endroits cibles, on a pu explorer la sequence d'application des couches picturales de chacune des deux compositions. Une decouverte particulierement interessante est la preuve que l'artiste a fait plusieurs tentatives pour positionner la figure sous-jacente puis, a ensuite applique une couche pour la recouvrir completement avant de faire pivoter le panneau et peindre la figure du vieil homme. Apos a descoberta e reconstrucAo digital da cor da figura subjacente, uma serie de questoes ainda permanecem. Tras la revelacion y la reconstruccion digital del color de la figura subyacente, aun quedaban algunas preguntas. Aqui, por medio del uso de la espectroscopia de imagenes de reflectancia infrarroja (es decir, imagenes hiperespectrales) e imagenes macro-XRF, junto con las secciones transversales tomadas de areas especificas, se exploro la secuencia de pintura en ambas composiciones. De particular interes fue el descubrimiento de evidencia de multiples intentos de situar la figura inferior, y la aplicacion posterior de una capa de bloqueo sobre la figura inferior antes de que el artista rotara el panel y ejecutara la figura superior. Abstract: Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a vapor phase technique that is able to deposit uniform, conformal thin films with an excellent thickness control at the atomic scale. 18 nm thick Al2O3 and TiO2 coatings were deposited conformaly and pinhole-free onto micrometer-sized Cu powder, using trimethylaluminum and tetrakis(dimethylamido)titanium(IV), respectively, as a precursor and de-ionized water as a reactant. The capability of the ALD coating to protect the Cu powder against corrosion was investigated. Therefore, the stability of the coatings was studied in solutions with different pH in the range of 0–14, and in situ raman spectroscopy was used to detect the emergence of corrosion products of Cu as an indication that the protective coating starts to fail. Both ALD coatings provide good protection at standard pH values in the range of 5–7. In general, the TiO2 coating shows a better barrier protection against corrosion than the Al2O3 coating. However, for the most extreme pH conditions, pH 0 and pH 14, the TiO2 coating starts also to degrade.

Abstract: In Ethiopia, the demand for land for urbanisation is primarily met by converting rural land through expropriation. However, land expropriations are adversely affecting the previous land users by reducing the amount of production and their sources of income. In Bahir Dar, one of the fastest-growing cities in Ethiopia, approximately 300 landholdings are expropriated each year, on average, for urban expansion. This paper assesses the land expropriations to examine whether they offer economically appropriate compensation for the previous land users. Land expropriations for urbanisation between 2007/2008 and 2016/2017 were analysed based on data on land expropriation and its compensation payment obtained from the Bahir Dar City Land Administration and Management Office. Data were analysed using an exponential growth model and a stochastic budgeting technique in which Monte Carlo simulations are performed. Between 2007/2008 and 2016/2017, more than 1500 ha of land were included in the city's boundary through expropriation from 2900 landholders. The affected farmers received compensation that represents only 37 per cent of the value of current crop yields and its growth. The current compensation scheme ignores the impact of inflation on the prices of crops and assumes constant yields. It also excludes the value of crop residuals. We propose a workable discounted compensation framework that considers crop price and yield growths. This will make the compensation scheme more appropriate and make the affected farmers better off.

Abstract: Plasma-liquid systems have attracted increasing attention in recent years, owing to their high potential in material processing and nanoscience, environmental remediation, sterilization, biomedicine, and food applications. Due to the multidisciplinary character of this scientific field and due to its broad range of established and promising applications, an updated overview is required, addressing the various applications of plasma-liquid systems till now. In the present review, after a brief historical introduction on this important research field, the authors aimed to bring together a wide range of applications of plasma-liquid systems, including nanomaterial processing, water analytical chemistry, water purification, plasma sterilization, plasma medicine, food preservation and agricultural processing, power transformers for high voltage switching, and polymer solution treatment. Although the general understanding of plasma-liquid interactions and their applications has grown significantly in recent decades, it is aimed here to give an updated overview on the possible applications of plasma-liquid systems. This review can be used as a guide for researchers from different fields to gain insight in the history and state-of-the-art of plasma-liquid interactions and to obtain an overview on the acquired knowledge in this field up to now.

Abstract: In order to increase the production rate during selective laser melting (SLM), a high power laser with a large beam diameter is used to build fully dense Hastelloy X parts. Compared to SLM with a low power and small diameter beam, the productivity was increased from 6 mm3/s to 16 mm3/s, i.e. 2.6 times faster. Besides the productivity benefit, the influence of the use of a high power laser on the rapid solidification microstructure and concomitant material properties is highlighted. The current paper compares the microstructure and tensile properties of Hastelloy X built with low and high power lasers. The use of a high power laser results in wider and shallower melt pools inducing an enhanced morphological and crystallographic texture along the building direction (BD). In addition, the increased heat input results in coarser sub-grains or high density dislocation walls for samples processed with a high power laser. Additionally, the influence of hot isostatic pressing (HIP) as a post-processing technique was evaluated. After HIP, the tensile fracture strain increased as compared to the strain in the as-built state and helped in obtaining competitive mechanical properties as compared to conventionally processed Hastelloy X parts.

Abstract: A detailed microstructural examination endeavoring to understand the interfacial phenomena yielding to cohesion
in solid-state assembling processes was performed. This study focuses on the transition zone of a dissimilar
titanium alloy joint obtained by Linear Friction Welding (LFW) the β-metastable Ti17 to the near-α
Ti6242. The transition zone delimitating both alloys is characterized by a sharp microstructure change from
acicular HCP (Hexagonal Close-Packed) α′ martensitic laths in the Ti6242 to equiaxed BCC β (Body-Centered
Cubic) subgrains in the Ti17; these α′ plates were shown to precipitate within prior-β subgrains remarkably more
rotated than the ones formed in the Ti17. Both α′ and β microstructures were found to be intermingled within
transitional subgrains demarcating a limited gradient from one chemical composition to the other. These peculiar
interfacial grains revealed that the cohesive mechanisms between the rubbing surfaces occurred in the
single-phase β domain under severe strain and high-temperature conditions. During the hot deformation process,
the mutual migration of the crystalline interfaces from one material to another assisted by a continuous dynamic
recrystallization process was identified as the main adhesive mechanism at the junction zone. The latter led to
successful cohesion between the rubbing surfaces. Once the reciprocating motion stopped, fast cooling caused
both materials to experience either a βlean→α′ or βlean→βmetastable transformation in the interfacial zone depending
on their local chemical composition. The limited process time and the subsequent hindered chemical
homogenization at the transition zone led to retaining the so-called intermingled α’/βm subgrains constituting
the border between both Ti-alloys.

Abstract: The toughness of Al-to-steel welds decreases with increasing thickness of the intermetallic (IM) layer formed at the interface. Co plating has been added as interlayer in Al-to-steel Friction Melt Bonded (FMB) welds to control the nature and thickness of the IM layer. In comparison to a weld without interlayer, Co plating brings about a reduction of the thickness of the IM layer by 70%. The critical energy release rate of the crack propagating in the weld is used as an indicator of toughness. It is evaluated via an adapted crack propagation test using an energy conservation criterion. For a weld without interlayer, critical energy release rate is found to increase when the thickness of the intermetallic layer decreases. When the intermetallic layer is thick, the crack propagates in a brittle manner through the intermetallic whereas, at low layer thickness, the crack deviates and partially propagates through the Al plate, which causes an increase of toughness. The use of a Co interlayer brings about an increase of toughness by causing full deviation of the crack towards the Al plate.

Abstract: Large area, single layer WS2 has a high potential for use in optoelectrical devices with its high photo-luminescence intensity and low response time. In this work, we demonstrate a systematic study of controlled tungsten disulfide (WS2) monolayer growth using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique. With a detailed investigation of process parameters such as H-2 gas inclusion into the main carrier gas, growth temperature and duration, we have gained insight into two-dimensional (2D) WS2 synthesis through controlling the seed formations and the radical vapor density associated with WO3. We confirm that H-2 gas, when included to the carrier gas, is directly involved in WO3 reduction due to its reductive reagent nature, which provides a more effective sulfurization and monolayer formation process. Additionally, by changing the CVD growth configuration, hence, increasing the tungsten related vapor density and confining the reactant radicals, we succeed in realizing larger WS(2 )monolayers, which is still a technological challenge in order to utilize these structures for practical applications. Further optimization of the growth procedure is demonstrated by tuning the growth duration to prevent the excess seed formations and additional layers which will possibly limit the device performance of the monolayer flakes or films when applied.

Abstract: Lithium-rich layered oxides such as Li₂MnO₃have shown great potential as cathodes in Li-ion batteries, mainly because of their large capacities. However, these materials still suffer from structural degradation as the battery is cycled, reducing the average voltage and capacity of the cell. The voltage fade is believed to be related to the migration of transition metals into the lithium layer, linked to the formation of O-O dimers with a short bond length, which in turn is driven by the presence of oxygen holes due to the participation of oxygen in the redox process. We investigate the formation of O-O dimers for partially charged O1-Li₂MnO₃using a first-principles density functional theory approach by calculating the reaction energy and kinetic barriers for dimer formation. Next, we perform similar calculations for partially charged O1-Li₂IrO₃, a Li-rich material for which the voltage fade was not observed during cycling. When we compare the stability of the oxygen framework, we conclude that the formation of O-O dimers is both thermodynamically and kinetically viable for O1-Li_0.5MnO₃. For O1-Li_0.5IrO₃, we observe that the oxygen lattice is much more stable, either returning to its original state when perturbed, or resulting in a structure with an O-O dimer that is much higher in energy. This can be explained by the mixed redox process for Li₂IrO₃, which is also shown from the calculated magnetic moments. The lack of O-O dimer formation in O1-Li_0.5IrO₃provides valuable insight as to why Li₂IrO₃does not demonstrate a voltage fade as the battery is cycled, which can be used to design Li-rich battery cathodes with an improved cycling performance.

Abstract: Pt nanoparticles play an essential role in a wide variety of catalytic reactions. The activity of the particles strongly depends on their three-dimensional (3D) structure and exposed facets, as well as on the reactive environment. High-resolution electron microscopy has often been used to characterize nanoparticle catalysts but unfortunately most observations so far have been either performed in vacuum and/or using conventional (2D) in situ microscopy. The latter however does not provide direct 3D morphological information. We have implemented a quantitative methodology to measure variations of the 3D atomic structure of nanoparticles under the flow of a selected gas. We were thereby able to quantify refaceting of Pt nanoparticles with atomic resolution during various oxidation−reduction cycles. In a H2 environment, a more faceted surface morphology of the particles was observed with {100} and {111} planes being dominant. On the other hand, in O2 the percentage of {100} and {111} facets decreased and a significant increase of higher order facets was found, resulting in a more rounded morphology. This methodology opens up new opportunities toward in situ characterization of catalytic nanoparticles because for the first time it enables one to directly measure 3D morphology variations at the atomic scale in a specific gaseous reaction environment.
