Title Enhancing the critical current in quasiperiodic pinning arrays below and above the matching magnetic flux Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 82 Issue 18 Pages 184512-184512,7
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Quasiperiodic pinning arrays, as recently demonstrated theoretically and experimentally using a fivefold Penrose tiling, can lead to a significant enhancement of the critical current Ic as compared to traditional regular pinning arrays. However, while regular arrays showed only a sharp peak in Ic(Φ) at the matching flux Φ1 and quasiperiodic arrays provided a much broader maximum at Φ<Φ1, both types of pinning arrays turned out to be inefficient for fluxes larger than Φ1. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the enhancement of Ic(Φ) for Φ>Φ1 by using non-Penrose quasiperiodic pinning arrays. This result is based on a qualitatively different mechanism of flux pinning by quasiperiodic pinning arrays and could be potentially useful for applications in superconducting microelectronic devices operating in a broad range of magnetic fields.

Title Enhancing total conductivity of La2NiO4+\delta epitaxial thin films by reducing thickness Type A1 Journal article
Year 2008 Publication The journal of physical chemistry: C : nanomaterials and interfaces Abbreviated Journal J Phys Chem C

Abstract High quality epitaxial c axis oriented La2NiO4+ä thin films have been prepared by the pulsed injection metal organic chemical vapor deposition technique on different substrates. High-resolution electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy has been used to confirm the high crystalline quality of the deposited films. The c-parameter evolution has been studied by XRD as a function of time and gas atmosphere. The high temperature transport properties along the basal a−b plane of epitaxial La2NiO4+ä films have been measured, and the total conductivity of the layers has been found to increase as the thickness is reduced. Layers of 50 nm and thinner have shown a maximum conductivity larger than that measured for single-crystals, in particular, the 33 nm thick films with a conductivity of 475 S/cm in oxygen correspond to the highest value measured to date for this material.

Title Environmental changes in MoTe2 excitonic dynamics by defects-activated molecular interaction Type A1 Journal article
Year 2015 Publication ACS nano Abbreviated Journal Acs Nano

Abstract Monolayers of group VI transition metal dichalcogenides possess direct gaps in the visible spectrum with the exception of MoTe2, where its gap is suitably located in the infrared region but its stability is of particular interest, as tellurium compounds are acutely sensitive to oxygen exposure. Here, our environmental (time-dependent) measurements reveal two distinct effects on MoTe2 monolayers: For weakly luminescent monolayers, photoluminescence signal and optical contrast disappear, as if they are decomposed, but yet remain intact as evidenced by AFM and Raman measurements. In contrast, strongly luminescent monolayers retain their optical contrast for a prolonged amount of time, while their PL peak blue-shifts and PL intensity saturates to slightly lower values. Our X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and DFT calculations suggest that the presence of defects and functionalization of these defect sites with O-2 molecules strongly dictate their material properties and aging response by changing the excitonic dynamics due to deep or shallow states that are created within the optical band gap. Presented results not only shed light on environmental effects on fundamental material properties and excitonic dynamics of MoTe2 monolayers but also highlight striking material transformation for metastable 20 systems such as WTe2, silicone, and phosphorene.

Abstract Uniform acceptance force biased Monte Carlo (UFMC) simulations have previously been shown to be a powerful tool to simulate atomic scale processes, enabling one to follow the dynamical path during the simulation. In this contribution, we present a simple proof to demonstrate that this uniform acceptance still complies with the condition of detailed balance, on the condition that the characteristic parameter lambda = 1/2 and that the maximum allowed step size is chosen to be sufficiently small. Furthermore, the relation to Metropolis Monte Carlo (MMC) is also established, and it is shown that UFMC reduces to MMC by choosing the characteristic parameter lambda = 0 [Rao, M. et al. Mol. Phys. 1979, 37, 1773]. Finally, a simple example compares the UFMC and MMC methods.

Abstract ITEM specimens of a LaAlO3/SrTiO3 multilayer are prepared by FIB with internal lift out. Using a Ga+1 beam of 5 kV, a final cleaning step yielding top, top-angle, side, and bottom-angle cleaning is performed. Different cleaning procedures, which can be easily implemented in a dual beam FIB system, are described and compared; all cleaning types produce thin lamellae, useful for HRTEM and HAADF-STEM work up to atomic resolution. However, the top cleaned lamellae are strongly affected by the curtain effect. Top-angle cleaned specimens show an amorphous layer of around 5 nm at the specimen surfaces, due to damage and redeposition. Furthermore, it is observed that the LaAlO3 layers are preferentially destroyed and transformed into amorphous material, during the thinning process.

Abstract We investigate low-temperature magnetotransport of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases subjected to one-dimensional periodic magnetic and electric modulations. Our previous quantum perturbation theory is extended to lower temperatures and the energy broadening due to impurity scattering is incorporated. Numerical calculations are made for situations where several Landau bands overlap. We find that the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are dominated by collisional resistance. The amplitudes of the SdH oscillations are strongly modulated and the positions of the SdH minima switch between even and odd Landau-level filling factors, in the resistance both parallel and perpendicular to the one-dimensional modulation. This is a consequence of the internal structure (i.e., smeared out van Hove singularities) of overlapping Landau bands. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with recent experiments.

Title Evidence for another low-temperature phase transition in tetragonal Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O3 (x=0.515,0.520) Type A1 Journal article
Year 2001 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
Volume 64 Issue 5 Pages 054104
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Results of dielectric and resonance frequency (f(r)) measurements below room temperature are presented for Pb(ZrxTi1-x)O-3, x = 0.515 and 0.520. It is shown that the temperature coefficient of f(r) changes sign from negative to positive around 210 and 265 K for x = 0.520 and 200 and 260 K for x = 0.515. Anomalies in the real part of the dielectric constant (epsilon') are observed around the same temperatures at which the temperature coefficient of f(r) changes sign because of the electrostrictive coupling between the elastic and dielectric responses. Low-temperature powder x-ray-diffraction (XRD) data, however, reveal only one transition from the tetragonal to monoclinic phase similar to that reported by Noheda et al. [Phys. Rev. B, 61, 8687 (2000)]. Electron-diffraction data, on the other hand, reveal yet another structural transition at lower temperatures corresponding to the second anomaly in the epsilon' vs T and f(r) vs T curves. This second transition is shown to be a cell-doubling transition not observed by Noheda et al. in their XRD studies. The observation of superlattice reflections raises doubts about the correctness of the Cm space group proposed by Noheda et al. for the monoclinic phase of Pb(ZrxTi(1-x))O-3 below the second transition temperature.

Title Evidence for metalsupport interactions in Au modified TiOx/SBA-15 materials prepared by photodeposition Type A1 Journal article
Year 2013 Publication ACS catalysis Abbreviated Journal Acs Catal
Volume 3 Issue 12 Pages 3041-3049
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Gold nanoparticles have been efficiently photodeposited onto titanate-loaded SBA-15 (Ti(x)/SBA-15) with different titania coordination. Transmission electron microscopy shows that relatively large Au nanoparticles are photodeposited on the outer surface of the Ti(x)/SBA-15 materials and that TiOx tends to form agglomerates in close proximity to the Au nanoparticles, often forming coreshell Au/TiOx structures. This behavior resembles typical processes observed due to strong-metal support interactions. In the presence of gold, the formation of hydrogen on Ti(x)/SBA-15 during the photodeposition process and the performance in the hydroxylation of terephthalic acid is greatly enhanced. The activity of the Au/Ti(x)/SBA-15 materials is found to depend on the TiOx loading, increasing with a larger amount of initially isolated TiO4 tetrahedra. Samples with initially clustered TiOx species show lower photocatalytic activities. When isolated zinc oxide (ZnOx) species are present on Ti(x)/SBA-15, gold nanoparticles are smaller and well dispersed within the pores. Agglomeration of TiOx species and the formation of Au/TiOx structures is negligible. The dispersion of gold and the formation of Au/TiOx in the SBA-15 matrix seem to depend on the mobility of the TiOx species. The mobility is determined by the initial degree of agglomeration of TiOx. Effective hydrogen evolution requires Au/TiOx coreshell composites as in Au/Ti(x)/SBA-15, whereas hydroxylation of terephthalic acid can also be performed with Au/ZnOx/TiOx/SBA-15 materials. However, isolated TiOx species have to be grafted onto the support prior to the zinc oxide species, providing strong evidence for the necessity of TiOSi bridges for high photocatalytic activity in terephthalic acid hydroxylation.

Title Evidence of oxygen-dependent modulation in LuFe2O4 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B

Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract A polycrystalline sample of LuFe2O4 has been investigated by means of powder synchrotron x-ray and neutron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), along with Mössbauer spectroscopy and transport and magnetic properties. A monoclinic distortion is unambiguously evidenced, and the crystal structure is refined in the monoclinic C2/m space group [aM = 5.9563(1) Å, bM = 3.4372(1) Å, cM = 8.6431(1) Å, β = 103.24(1)°]. Along with the previously reported modulations distinctive of the charge-ordering (CO) of the iron species, a new type of incommensurate order is observed, characterized by a vector q⃗1 = α1a⃗M* + γ1c⃗M* (with α1 ≅ 0.55, γ1 ≅ 0.13). In situ heating TEM observations from 300 to 773 K confirm that the satellites associated with q⃗1 vanish completely, only at a temperature significantly higher than the CO temperature. This incommensurate modulation has a displacive character and corresponds primarily to a transverse displacive modulation wave of the Lu cations position, as revealed by the high resolution, high angle annular dark field scanning TEM images and in agreement with synchrotron data refinements. Analyses of vacuum-annealed samples converge toward the hypothesis of a new ordering mechanism, associated with a tiny oxygen deviation from the O4 stoichiometry.

Title Evidence of strain induced structural change in hetero-epitaxial NdNiO3 thin films with metal-insulator transition Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication European physical journal: applied physics Abbreviated Journal Eur Phys J-Appl Phys
Volume 25 Issue 1 Pages 25-31
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Neodymium nickelate thin films have been prepared on NdGaO3 substrates by RF magnetron sputtering and post-annealing treatment under oxygen pressure. Transport properties are found to depend strongly on film thickness. Thick films show transport properties close to bulk ceramics, while very thin films exhibit a large transition from metal to insulator which occurs over a wide temperature range with high resistivity. Structure and surface morphology of the films have been investigated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Thin films (approximate to17 nm) grow heteroepitaxially, while thicker films (approximate to73 nm) show a granular structure. The thinnest sample suggests a symmetry change induced by the epitaxial strain of the substrate. This paper discusses the relationship between microstructure and transport properties.
