“A-site ordering and stripe phases in manganite films”. Sudheendra L, Moshnyaga V, Lebedev OI, Gehrke K, Belenciuc A, Shapoval O, Van Tendeloo G, Samwer K, Physica: B : condensed matter

Abstract: Insulating and metallic stripes above and below the Curie temperature, T-C, respectively, were observed by a high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and/or spectroscopy (STS) in A-site ordered and macroscopically strain free epitaxial La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 film grown on MgO substrate. The “insulating” stripes were found to be incommensurable to the lattice and aligned along (110) direction. Metallic stripes were commensurable with periodicity 2a(p)similar to 0.8 nm and aligned parallel to the crystallographic a/b-axis. Formation of these stripes involves competing charge, orbital, and lattice orders and is an outcome of an overlapping of electron wave functions mediated by the local lattice-strain distribution, existed even in A-site ordered film due to the difference in cation radii of La and Ca. Abstract: Motivated by the recent realization of graphene sensors to detect individual gas molecules, we investigate the adsorption of H2O, NH3, CO, NO2, and NO on a graphene substrate using first-principles calculations. The optimal adsorption position and orientation of these molecules on the graphene surface is determined and the adsorption energies are calculated. Molecular doping, i.e., charge transfer between the molecules and the graphene surface, is discussed in light of the density of states and the molecular orbitals of the adsorbates. The efficiency of doping of the different molecules is determined and the influence of their magnetic moment is discussed.

Abstract: The morphological evolution in La(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3)/SrTiO(3)(100) ultrathin films has been revealed by atomic force microscopy. It was found that ordered linear defects, which are in 1-2 unit cells high and oriented along the cubic [110] and [100] directions, first appear on the smooth surface of films with a thickness of 10 nm. As the epitaxial growth proceeds, these lines on surface develop into a crosshatch pattern for films with a thickness of 25 nm. Using the results of transmission electron microscopy and electrical measurements, we discuss the interplay between the surface pattern formation, the internal dislocation structure, and the variations in the electrical properties.

Abstract: The effect of temperature on the structural, electronic and optical properties of dense tetrahedral amorphous carbon made of similar to 80% sp(3)-bonded atoms is investigated using a combination of the classical Monte Carlo technique and density functional theory. A structural transformation accompanied by a slight decrease of the sp(3) fraction is evidenced above a temperature of about 600 degrees C. A structural analysis in combination with energy-loss near-edge structure calculations shows that beyond this temperature, the sp(2)-bonded C sites arrange themselves so as to enhance the conjugation of the p electrons. The Tauc optical band gap deduced from the calculated dielectric function shows major changes beyond this temperature in accordance with experimental results. Energy-loss near-edge structure and band gap calculations additionally reveal a massive destabilization of the of sp(3) bonding phase in favour of sp(2) bonding at a temperature of about 1300 degrees C which agrees very well with the reported value of 1100 degrees C.

Abstract: Electron transport through multiterminal rectangular arrays of quantum rings is studied in the presence of Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and of a perpendicular magnetic field. Using the analytic expressions for the transmission and reflection coefficients for single rings we obtain the conductance through such arrays as a function of the SOI strength, of the magnetic flux, and of the wave vector k of the incident electron. Due to destructive or constructive spin interferences caused by the SOI, the array can be totally opaque for certain ranges of k, while there are parameter values where it is completely transparent. Spin resolved transmission probabilities show nontrivial spin transformations at the outputs of the arrays. When pointlike random scattering centers are placed between the rings, the Aharonov-Bohm peaks split, and an oscillatory behavior of the conductance emerges as a function of the SOI strength.

“Manipulation of two-electron states by the electric field in stacked self-assembled dots”. Nowak MP, Szafran B, Peeters FM, Journal of physics : condensed matter 20, 395225 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1088/0953-8984/20/39/395225
Abstract: A pair of electrons in vertically stacked self-assembled quantum dots is studied and the singlettriplet energy splitting is calculated in an external electric field using the configuration-interaction method. We show that for double quantum dots the dependence of the singlet energy levels on the electric field involves multiple avoided crossings of three energy levels. The exchange interaction, i.e., the energy difference of the lowest triplet and lowest singlet states, can be tuned by an electric field in a wide range of several tens of meV. For electric fields exceeding a threshold value the exchange interaction becomes a linear function of the field when the two electrons in the singlet state start to occupy the same dot. We also consider non-symmetric confinement, non-perfectly aligned dots, in horizontal as well as vertical field orientation. In a stack of three vertically coupled dots the depth of the confinement in the central dot can be used to enhance the exchange interaction. For a deeper central dot the dependence of the exchange interaction on the electric field is anomalousit initially decreases when the field is applied in both directions parallel and antiparallel to the axis of the stack. Such a behavior is never observed for a pair of quantum dots.
