Abstract: Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) strategies, such as reuse, recycling and energy recovery aim, to capture more of the embedded resource or material value in products and waste streams. Reuse, recycling and energy recovery are existing activities in every society but they are poorly reflected in official statistics. Reaching higher levels of reuse, recycling and energy recovery may provide economic and environmental opportunities (i.e., in terms of GDP, jobs, reduced impacts), but not all options will have a net win-win-win property in practice, as they reduce the need for producing new commodities. In open economies, many primary resources, components and products are imported from abroad, and many goods produced are exported abroad. This paper describes a top-down methodology for estimating the substitution potential of intensifying specific SMM-strategies and material efficiency strategies. We combined both regional and multi-regional EE-IO (environmentally extended input-output) models to link industrial sectors to SMM-strategies. Our method enables us to compare the different SMM and material efficiency strategies in terms of the maximum available budgets for reaching them on a break even basis, maximum savings in global warming emissions and substituted employment effects, both through a regional and global perspective. We add a case on Flanders (Northern region in Belgium) to illustrate the methodology. Flanders is currently developing a policy for SMM. Selecting new regional actions for a Sustainable Materials Management policy can benefit from a good understanding of the international entangled value chains. It is important to understand how much of the chain is within reach of domestic policies and also to assess the consequences in terms of potential winners and losers, regarding GDP, jobs and environmental impacts, both domestically and abroad. We illustrated the potential outcomes for Flanders from four generic SMM-strategies: energy recovery, food waste prevention, recycling and reuse. From a strict regional self-interest perspective, it is preferable to substitute foreign value chains with local economic activities. Reuse creates by far the largest budget for new activities to realize the strategy (31.2% of Flemish GDP compared to 8.3% for food waste prevention, 6.2% for energy recovery and 4.2% for recycling). All four strategies have similar and significant potentials to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, food waste prevention and reuse have higher potentials to reduce Flemish territorial GHG-emissions. From a pure Flemish employment perspective, the energy recovery and recycling strategies could replace the fewest Flemish jobs, and from a global perspective, all strategies most likely imply losses of jobs abroad. Abstract: The effect of gas heating in laboratory sputter magnetrons is investigated by means of numerical modeling. The model is two-dimensional in the coordinate space and three-dimensional in the velocity space based on the particle-in-cellMonte Carlo collisions technique. It is expanded in a way that allows the inclusion of the neutral plasma particles (fast gas atoms and sputtered atoms), which makes it possible to calculate the gas temperature and its influence on the discharge behavior in a completely self-consistent way. The results of the model are compared to experimental measurements and to other existing simulation results. The results show that gas heating is pressure dependent (rising with the increase in the gas pressure) and should be taken into consideration at pressures above 10 mTorr.

Abstract: We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the dissipative state of superconducting samples with a periodic array of holes at high current densities consists of flux rivers resulting from a short-range attractive interaction between vortices. This dynamically induced vortex-vortex attraction results from the migration of quasiparticles out of the vortex core (kinematic vortices). We have directly visualized the formation of vortex chains by scanning Hall probe microscopy after freezing the dynamic state by a field cooling procedure at a constant bias current. Similar experiments carried out in a sample without holes show no hint of flux river formation. We shed light on this nonequilibrium phenomena modeled by time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations.

Abstract: Moire patterns in the pseudo-magnetic field and in the strain profile of graphene (GE) when put on top of a hexagonal lattice substrate are predicted from elasticity theory. The van der Waals interaction between GE and the substrate induces out-of-plane deformations in graphene which results in a strain field, and consequently in a pseudo-magnetic field. When the misorientation angle is about 0.5 degrees, a three-fold symmetric strain field is realized that results in a pseudo-magnetic field very similar to the one proposed by F. Guinea, M. I. Katsnelson, and A. K. Geim [Nature Phys. 6, 30 (2010)]. Our results show that the periodicity and length of the pseudo-magnetic field can be tuned in GE by changing the misorientation angle and substrate adhesion parameters and a considerable energy gap (23 meV) can be obtained due to out-of-plane deformation of graphene which is in the range of recent experimental measurements (20-30 meV). Abstract: The interband optical absorption in Si/SiO2 quantum wells is calculated as function of the well width (W) and the evolution from an indirect to a direct gap material as function of the well width is investigated. In order to compute the electron states in the conduction band, the 30-band k . p model is employed, whereas the 6-band Luttinger-Kohn model is used for the hole states. We found that the effective direct band gap in the quantum well agrees very well with the W-2 scaling result of the single-band model. The interband matrix elements for linear polarized light oscillate with the quantum well width, which agrees qualitatively with a single band calculation. Our theoretical results indicate that the absorption can be maximized by a proper choice of the well width. However, the obtained absorption coefficients are at least an order of magnitude smaller than for a typical direct semiconductor even for a well width of 2 nm. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: Annular dark field TEM images exhibit a dominant mass-thickness contrast that can be quantified to extract single atom scattering cross sections. On top of this incoherent background, additional lattice fringes appear with a nonlinear information limit of 1.2 angstrom at 150 kV. The formation of these fringes is described by coherent nonlinear imaging theory and good agreement is found between experimental and simulated images. Calculations furthermore predict that the use of aberration corrected microscopes will improve the image quality dramatically. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We study the commensurability oscillations in silicene subject to a perpendicular electric field E-z, a weak magnetic field B, and a weak periodic potential V = V-0 cos(Cy); C = 2 pi/a(0) with a(0) its period. The field E-z and/or the modulation lift the spin degeneracy of the Landau levels and lead to spin and valley resolved Weiss oscillations. The spin resolution is maximal when the field E-z is replaced by a periodic one E-z = E-0 cos(Dy); D = 2 pi/b(0), while the valley one is maximal for b(0) = a(0). In certain ranges of B values, the current is fully spin or valley polarized. Additional quantum Hall conductivity plateaux arise due to spin and valley intra-Landau-level transitions. Abstract: Biomass as a renewable energy source has many advantages and is therefore recognized as one of the main renewable energy sources to be deployed in order to attain the target of 20% renewable energy use of final energy consumption by 2020 in Europe. In this paper the concept of a biomass Energy Conversion Park (ECP) is introduced. A biomass ECP can be defined as a synergetic, multi-dimensional biomass conversion site with a highly integrated set of conversion technologies in which a multitude of regionally available biomass (residue) sources are converted into energy and materials. A techno-economic assessment is performed on a case study in the Netherlands to illustrate the concept and to comparatively assess the highly integrated system with two mono-dimensional models. The three evaluated models consist of (1) digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste, (2) co-digestion of manure and co-substrates, and (3) integration. From a socio-economic point of view it can be concluded that it is economically and energetically more interesting to invest in the integrated model than in two separate models. The integration is economically feasible and environmental benefits can be realized. For example, the integrated model allows the implementation of a co-digester. Unmanaged manure would otherwise represent a constant pollution risk. However, from an investor's standpoint one should firstly invest in the municipal solid waste digester since the net present value (NPV) of this mono-dimensional model is higher than that of the multi-dimensional model. A sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the most influencing parameters. Our results are of interest for companies involved in the conversion of biomass. Abstract: Electrons in alpha-T-3 lattices behave as condensed-matter analogies of integer-spin Dirac fermions. The three atoms making up the unit cell bestow the energy spectrum with an additional energy band that is completely flat, providing unique electronic properties. The interatomic hopping term, alpha, is known to strongly affect the electronic spectrum of the two-dimensional (2D) lattice, allowing it to continuously morph from graphenelike responses to the behavior of fermions in a dice lattice. For pristine lattice structures the energy bands are gapless, but small deviations in the atomic equivalence of the three sublattices will introduce gaps in the spectrum. It is unknown how these affect transport and electronic properties such as the energy spectrum of superlattice minibands. Here we investigate the dependency of these properties on the parameter a accounting for different symmetry-breaking terms, and we show how it affects band-gap formation. Furthermore, we find that superlattices can force band gaps to close and shift in energy. Our results demonstrate that alpha-T-3 superlattices provide a versatile material for 2D band-gap engineering purposes.

Abstract: Due to the potential application of DNA for biophysics and optoelectronics, the electronic energy states and transitions of this genetic material have attracted a great deal of attention recently. However, the fluorescence and corresponding physical process of DNA under optical excitation with photon energies below ultraviolet are still not fully clear. In this work, we experimentally investigate the photoluminescence (PL) properties of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) samples under near-ultraviolet (NUV) and visible excitations (270 similar to 440 nm). Based on the dependence of the PL peak wavelength (lem) upon the excitation wavelength (lex), the PL behaviors of ssDNA can be approximately classified into two categories. In the relatively short excitation wavelength regime, lem is nearly constant due to exciton-like transitions associated with delocalized excitonic states and excimer states. In the relatively long excitation wavelength range, a linear relation of lem = Alex + B with A 0 or A < 0 can be observed, which comes from electronic transitions related to coupled vibrational-electronic levels. Moreover, the transition channels in different excitation wavelength regimes and the effects of strand length and base type can be analyzed on the basis of these results. These important findings not only can give a general description of the electronic energy states and transitional behaviors of ssDNA samples under NUV and visible excitations, but also can be the basis for the application of DNA in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics.

Abstract: The effect of the spatially varying spin current on a skyrmion is numerically investigated. It is shown that an inhomogeneous current density induces an elongation of the skyrmion. This elongation can be controlled using current pulses of different strength and duration. Long current pulses lead to a splitting that forms two replicas of the initial skyrmion while for short pulses the elongated skyrmion relaxes back to its initial circular state through rotation in the MHz-GHz frequency range. The frequency is dependent on the strength of the damping coefficient.

Abstract: Control of the texture and the biaxial alignment of sputter deposited films has provoked a great deal of interest due to its technological importance. indeed, many physical properties of thin films are influenced by the biaxial alignment. In this context, extensive research has been established to understand the growth mechanism of biaxially aligned Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) as a buffer layer for high temperature superconducting copper oxides. In this work, the growth mechanism in general and the mechanism responsible of the biaxial alignment in detail were investigated for thin films of YSZ and TiN deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering using non-aligned polycrystalline stainless steel substrates. The mechanism responsible for the preferential out-of-plane alignment has been investigated by performing depositions on a non-tilted substrate. However, to study the in-plane alignment a tilted substrate was used. The microstructure of the deposited layers was characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The crystallographic alignment has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (angular scans and pole figures) and by Selective Area Diffraction (SAD). It was observed that the deposited layers show a zone T or zone II structure and the layers with a zone T structure consist of faceted grains. There seems to be a correlation between the crystal habit of these faceted grains and the measured biaxial alignment. A model for the preferential out-of-plane orientation, the in-plane alignment and the correlation between the microstructure and the biaxial alignment is proposed.
