Title An effective morphology control of hydroxyapatite crystals via hydrothermal synthesis Type A1 Journal article
Year 2009 Publication Crystal growth & design Abbreviated Journal Cryst Growth Des
  Volume 9 Issue 1 Pages 466-474
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract A facile urea-assisted hydrothermal synthesis and systematic characterization of hydroxyapatite (HA) with calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and diammonium hydrogen phosphate as precursors are reported. The advantage of the proposed technique over previously reported synthetic approaches is the simple but precise control of the HA crystals morphology, which is achieved by employing an intensive, stepwise, and slow thermal decomposition of urea as well as varying initial concentrations of starting reagents. Whereas the plate-, hexagonal prism- and needle-like HA particles preferentially growth along the c-axis, the smaller and fine-plate-like HA crystals demonstrate crystal growth along the (102) and (211) directions, uncommon for HA. Furthermore, it was established that the hydrothermally derived powdered products are phase-pure HA containing CO32− anions in the crystal lattice, that is, AB-type carbonated hydroxyapatite. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) of selected samples reveal that the as-prepared HA crystals are single-crystalline and exhibit a nearly defect-free microstructure. The hardness and elastic modulus of the hexagonal prism-like HA crystals have been investigated on a nanoscale using the nanoindentation technique; the observed trends are discussed.

Title Highly oriented ZnO nanorod arrays by a novel plasma chemical vapor deposition process Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Crystal growth & design Abbreviated Journal Cryst Growth Des
  Volume 10 Issue 4 Pages 2011-2018
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Strongly c-axis oriented ZnO nanorod arrays were grown on Si(100) by plasma enhanced-chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) starting from two volatile bis(ketoiminato) zinc(II) compounds Zn[(R′)NC(CH3)═C(H)C(CH3)═O]2, with R′ = -(CH2)xOCH3 (x = 2, 3). A systematic investigation of process parameters enabled us to obtain the selective formation of ZnO nanorods with tailored features, and provided an important insight into their growth mechanism. The morphology, structure, and composition of the synthesized ZnO nanosystems were thoroughly analyzed by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), glancing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Photoluminescence (PL) measurements were carried out to gain information on the optical properties. Specifically, one-dimensional (1D) ZnO architectures could be grown on Si(100) substrates at temperatures as low as 200−300 °C and radio frequency (RF)-power values of 20 W, provided that a sufficiently high mass supply to the growth surface was maintained. To the best of our knowledge, the present work reports the mildest preparation conditions ever appeared in the literature for the PE-CVD of ZnO nanorods, a key result in view of potential large-scale technological applications.

Title Insight into the growth of multiple branched MnOOH nanorods Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Crystal growth & design Abbreviated Journal Cryst Growth Des
  Volume 10 Issue 7 Pages 2969-2976
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Multiple branched manganese oxide hydroxide (MnOOH) nanorods prepared by a hydrothermal process were extensively studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A model of the branch formation is proposed together with a study of the interface structure. The sword-like tip plays a crucial role for the nanorods to form different shapes. Importantly, the branching occurs at an angle of around either 57 degrees or 123 degrees. Specifically, a (111) twin plane can only be formed at the interface with a 123 degrees angle. The interfaces formed with a 57 degrees angle usually contain edge dislocations. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) demonstrates that the whole crystal has a uniform chemical composition. Interestingly, an epitaxial growth of Mn3O4 at the radial surface was also observed under electron beam irradiation; this is because of the rough purification of the products. The proposed mechanism is expected to shed light on the branched/dendrite nanostructure growth and to provide opportunities for further novel nanomaterial structure growth and design.

Title Nickel/carbon composite materials based on expanded graphite Type A1 Journal article
Year 2011 Publication New carbon materials Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 26 Issue 5 Pages 335-340
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Monolithic nickel/carbon (Ni/C) composites were prepared from coal tar pitch-impregnated compressed expanded graphite pre-decorated with NiO particles (EGNiO) by pyrolysis at 550 °C and subsequent steam activation at 800 °C. The microstructural arrangement of the Ni-comprising nanoparticles in the composites was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The specific surface area and porosity of the composites were analyzed by nitrogen adsorption. The catalytic activity of the composites was compared with the material obtained by the conventional H2 treatment of EGNiO using hydrocracking of 2,2,3-trimethylpentane as a model reaction.

Title The superconducting bismuth-based mixed oxides Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The present paper describes the synthesis, characterization of mixed-valence bismuthates with three- or two-dimensional perovskite-like structures and structural criteria that influence superconductivity in these compounds. Single-phase samples of Sr1-xKxBiO3 were prepared for the broad range of K-content: 0.25 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65. For these bismuthates the symmetry of the structure changes from monoclinic to orthorhombic and finally to tetragonal upon increasing the K-content thus resulting in the decrease of the Bi-O distances and reduction of the network distortions. Superconductivity with maximum T-c = 12 K exists in the narrow range (x approximate to 0.5-0.6) within the stability field of the tetragonal phase (0.33 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65), when the three-dimensional octahedral framework has close to the ideal perovskite structure arrangement. The layered type (Ba,K)(3)Bi2O7 and (Ba,K)(2)BiO4 bismuthates belonging to the A(n+1)B(n)O(3n+1) homologous series were investigated. Buckling of the (BiO2) layers in the structure of the n = 2 member occurs due to the ordering of alkaline- and alkaline-earth cations between two independent positions. The formation of the one-layer bismuthate was revealed by Electron Microscopy and XRPD studies. Both types of compounds are considered to be possible candidates for new superconducting materials among bismuthates. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract We studied the morphology of ramps in REBa2CU3O7 (REBCO) epitaxial films on SrTiO3 substrates, fabricated by RF magnetron sputter deposition and pulsed laser deposition (PLD), by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and high resolution electron microscopy (HREM). The ramps were fabricated by Ar ion beam etching using masks of standard photoresist and TIN. AFM-studies on ramps in sputter deposited films show a strong dependence, i.e. formation of facets and ridges, on the angle of incidence of the ion beam with respect to the substrate surface as well as the rotation angle with respect to the crystal axes of the substrate. Ramps in pulsed laser deposited films did not show this dependence, Furthermore, we studied the effect of an anneal step prior to the deposition of barrier layers (i.e. PrBa2CU3O7, SrTiO3, CeO2) on the ramp. First results show a recrystallization of the ramp surface, resulting in terraces and a non-homogeneous growth of the barrier material on top of it. The thickness variations, for thin layers of barrier material, con even become much larger than expected from the amount of deposited material and are dependent on the deposition and anneal conditions. HREM studies show a well defined interface between barrier layer and electrodes. The angle of the ramp depends on the etch rate of the mask and REBCO, and on the angle of incidence of the ion beam. TiN has a much lower etch rate compared to photoresist, resulting in an angle of the ramp comparable to the angle of incidence, resulting in a low etching rate on the ramp. These results will lead to improved electrical characteristics of ramp-type junctions.

Abstract The variation of structures and superconducting properties by changing extra oxygen or fluorine atoms concentration in Hg-based Cu mixed oxides and YBa2Cu3O6+delta was studied. The data obtained by NPD study of Hg-1201 can be considered as an evidence of the conventional oxygen doping mechanism with 2 delta holes per (CuO2) layer. The extra oxygen atom was found to be located in the middle of the Hg mesh only. Different formal charges of oxygen and fluorine inserted into reduced 123 structure results in its distinct variations. The fluorine incorporation into strongly reduced YBa2Cu3O6+delta causes a significant structural rearrangement and the formation of a new compound with a composition close to YBa2Cu3O6F2 (tetragonal alpha = 3.87 Angstrom and c approximate to 13 Angstrom), which structure was deduced from the combined results of X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. Fluorination treatment by XeF2 of nonsuperconducting 123 samples causes an appearance of bulk superconductivity with T-c up to 94K.

Abstract Experimental results show that the room-temperature carrier mobility in bulk layers of undoped or Si-doped GaN grown by LP-MOVPE on sapphire substrate shows a sudden increase as soon as the carrier density exceeds a critical value of about 10(18) cm(-3). We show that such a behavior can be theoretically reproduced by assuming that the columnar structure i.e. the dislocation microstructure is responsible for internal electronic barriers.   Abstract Infrared absorption spectra of polyhedral and platelet oxygen precipitates are analyzed using a modified Day-Thorpe approach (J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 11 (1999) 2551). The aspect ratio has been determined by TEM measurements. The reduced spectral function and the stoichiometry are extracted from the absorption spectra and the concentration of precipitated interstitial oxygen. One set of spectra reveal a Frohlich frequency around 1100 cm(-1) and another around 1110-1120 cm(-1). It is shown that the shift in the Frohlich frequency is not due to a different stoichiometry, but due to the detailed structure in the reduced spectral function. The oxygen precipitates consist of SiO. with gammaapproximate to1.1-1.2+/-0.1. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Title Ordering of tetrahedral chains in the Sr2MnGaO5 brownmillerite Type A1 Journal article
Year 2003 Publication Journal of solid state chemistry Abbreviated Journal J Solid State Chem
  Volume 174 Issue 2 Pages 319-328
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Tetrahedral chain ordering in the Sr2MnGaO5 structure is studied using electron diffraction (ED) and high-resolution electron microscopy. The ED patterns show the presence of satellite reflections, which indicate a commensurately modulated structure with a = 5.4056(8) Angstrom b 16.171(3) Angstrom, c = 5.5592(7) Angstrom, q – 1/2c*, superspace group Immma(00gamma,)s00. The Superstructure arises due to ordering of the two types of symmetry related tetrahedral chains (L and R) according to a ... LRLR ... sequence, where L and R chains alternate along the c-axis within the same (GaO) layer. Numerous defects at different structural levels were observed, comprising interleaving L and R chains, violation of the ... LRLR ... chain sequence within one layer, different stacking modes of the ... LRLR ... ordered layers with subsequent alternation of blocks of different width along the h-axis of the brownmillerite subcell and island fragmentation of the modulated superstructure. By in situ heating ED experiments it is found that the long-range ordering of the tetrahedral chains is stable tip to 665degreesC and is completely suppressed at 905degreesC. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc.   Abstract The analysis of high-frequency electromagnetic field (HFEMF) effects on the microstructure and electrical properties of Te+ implanted (0 0 1) Si is reported. Cross-sectional high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (XHRTEM) demonstrates the formation of Te nanoclusters (NCs) embedded in the Si layer amorphized by implantation (a-Si) at fluences greater than or equal to 1 x 10(16) cm(-2). Post-implantation treatment with 0.45 MHz HFEMF leads to enlargement of Te NCs, their diffusion and accumulation at the a-Si surface and formation of laterally connected extended tellurium structures above the percolation threshold, appearing at an ion fluence of 1 x 10(17) cm(-2). AC electrical conductivity measurements show nearly four orders of magnitude decrease of impedance resistivity in this case, which is in good agreement with the results of our structural studies. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the two-phase isotropic spinodal structure. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract Insulating and metallic stripes above and below the Curie temperature, T-C, respectively, were observed by a high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and/or spectroscopy (STS) in A-site ordered and macroscopically strain free epitaxial La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 film grown on MgO substrate. The “insulating” stripes were found to be incommensurable to the lattice and aligned along (110) direction. Metallic stripes were commensurable with periodicity 2a(p)similar to 0.8 nm and aligned parallel to the crystallographic a/b-axis. Formation of these stripes involves competing charge, orbital, and lattice orders and is an outcome of an overlapping of electron wave functions mediated by the local lattice-strain distribution, existed even in A-site ordered film due to the difference in cation radii of La and Ca.
