Title Mixed layers in copper based superconducting materials Type A1 Journal article
Year 1996 Publication Microscopy, microanalysis, microstructures Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 7 Issue 2 Pages 107-141
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Recently discovered series of high Tc superconductors, characterized by the existence of two types of cations within the same layer, are presented. The first family concerns the mercury based cuprates, Hg(1-x)M(x)A(2)Ca(m-1)Cu(m)O(2m+2+delta), with A = Ba and/or Sr, which exhibit structures closely related to that of the thallium cuprates TlBa2Cam-1CumO2m+3. They differ from the thallium cuprates by a high oxygen deficiency at the level of the mercury layer. It is shown that cations such as M = Cu, Pb, Tl, Bi, Ce, Pr, Cr, V, Mo, W, Ti, Sr, Ca,... can partially substitute for mercury ions, stabilizing the structures. The cationic composition of the layer depends indeed on the nature of the M cation but also on that of the alkaline earth A. For given A and M cations, the a: value remains unchanged even when the number of copper layers varies. M and Hg cations are either statistically distributed over the same site or ordered. Different types of ordering have been detected. Another way of generating mixed layers is to shear periodically the structure, leading to the formation of the so called ''collapsed phase''. In the collapsed bismuth cuprates, bismuth and copper segments, a few octahedra long, alternate in strongly waving layers. In the collapsed oxycarbonates, carbonate groups and M cations are ordered within the intermediate layer so that they can be simply described from a partial and ordered substitution of carbon for Hg,TI, Bi and other M cations building the intermediate layer. The oxycarbonitrates (Y1-xCax)(n)Ba2nCu3n-1(C,N)O3O7n-3 can also be described as an ordered substitution of carbon for copper in the 123 matrix. The different families of superconducting materials which are generated by such mechanisms are described as well as the way the different species are distributed within the mixed layers. Their influence on the physical properties are discussed.

Year 2003 Publication Journal de physique: 4 T2 – 10th International Conference on Martensitic Transformations, JUN 10-14, 2002, ESPOO, FINLAND Abbreviated Journal J Phys Iv

Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract We measured the electrical resistivity R(T) and specific heat C-p(T) between room temperature (RT) and 4.2 K as well as the microstructure by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of a Ni-52 Ti-48 SMA quenched from 1000degreesC (B2-Phase range) to RT and then annealed for 1h at T=380degreesC, 550degreesC and 650degreesC. In the “as quenched” and the “650degreesC annealed” state no martensitic transformations (MT's) occur. The diffraction patterns show faint reflections originating from coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation. Additional reflections of the type 1/2 <110>, 1/2 <111> and 1/3 <110> result from various lattice displacement waves, which are precursors of the MT's to the B19' and R-phase, respectively. Indeed, high resolution TEM micrographs of the [001] zone of the “as quenched” sample reveal transverse 1/2 <110> <110> lattice displacement waves, precursors of the B19' martensite. The coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates, homogeneously distributed on a small length scale, binder the MT's in the “as quenched” and the “650degreesC annealed” state, and thus only the precursors appear. When annealed at T=380degreesC, however, coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates with a length of 10nm are clearly visible in TEM. These precipitates trigger the NIT from the B2 to the R-phase on cooling, as evidenced also by anomalies in R(T) and C-p(T). Annealing at T-550degreesC leads to the well known two step MT's from the B2 to the R-phase and then into the B19'-phase. These martensitic transitions are clearly seen as additional peaks in the specific heat and anomalies in the resistance, while the “as quenched” and 650degreesC annealed samples show weak features in R(T) and C-p(T).

Abstract Microstructural investigations with transmission electron microscopy were carried out on quenched Ni-Ti alloys with 52 and 54.5 at% Ni. For the Ni52Ti48 specimen long time exposed diffraction patterns of a single grain show besides the expected reflections of the B2-phase, two sets of extra reflections in different zones. The first type of spots is explained by lattice displacement waves, which are regarded as precursors of the martensitic Ni-Ti phases, B 19' and R-phase, respectively. The second set of reflection with more diffuse intensity than the other reflections is related to Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation. For the Ni-richer Ni54.5Ti45.5 alloy only Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation are found but no precursors of the B 19'- and R-phase.

Abstract The melting transition of the five different lattices of a bilayer crystal is studied using the Monte-Carlo (MC) technique. We found the surprising result that the square lattice has a substantial larger melting temperature as compared to the other lattice structures, which is a consequence of the specific topology of the temperature induced defects. A new melting criterion is formulated which we show to be universal for bilayers as well as for single layer crystals.

Abstract The nucleation and growth mechanisms of Ni5Al3 precipitates and microtwinned plates in B2 austenite and 2M (3R) martensite phases are described on the basis of conventional and high resolution electron microscopy. In the Ni62.5Al37.5 B2 austenite matrix short annealings at 550 degrees C introduce three-pointed star shaped precipitates consisting of twin related parts of different variants of the Ni5Al3 structure. Longer annealings result in plates growing separately from these wings and developing microtwinning in order to accommodate stress built-up at the interfaces with the surrounding matrix. Annealing of Ni65Al35 2M martensite plates induces simple reordering into the Ni5Al3 phase, increasing the fct c/a ratio by about 1%. As a result stracking faults are introduced in the smallest twin variants.

Abstract Strain fields introduced by coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates in austenitic Ni-Ti are believed to be a possible origin of why the R-phase transformation is introduced as an extra step before transforming to the B19'. The presence of this strain field was already confirmed in the past by conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques and measured quantitatively by high resolution TEM (HRTEM). This time the geometrical phase method is applied on HRTEM micrographs to measure the full 3D strain tensor of the strain fields. Since each atomic resolution micrograph only results in a 2D measurement of the strain, observations in two different zone orientations are combined to retrieve the 3 x 3 strain tensor. In this work observations in a [1-1 1](B2) and [1 0-1](B2) zone orientation are used and this in case of precipitates with a diameter of around 50nm. In a next step the measured strain tensor is compared to the calculated eigenstrain of the R-phase in reference to the B2 matrix. This comparison shows that the introduced strain is very similar to the eigenstrain of one R-phase variant. Since for both structures, Ni4Ti3 and R-phase, four orientation variants are possible, each variant of the R-phase is thus able to accommodate the strain field of one of the Ni4Ti3 variants.

Title Transmission electron microscopy study of low-hysteresis shape memory alloys Type P1 Proceeding
  Year 2009 Publication Abbreviated Journal

Keywords P1 Proceeding; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Recent findings have linked low hysteresis in shape memory alloys with phase compatibility between austenite and martensite. In order to investigate the evolution of microstructure as the phase compatibility increases and the hysteresis is reduced, transmission electron microscopy was used to study the alloy system Ti50Ni50-xPdx where the composition is systemically tuned to approach perfect compatibility. Changes in morphology, twinning density and twinning modes are reported along with special microstructures occurring when the compatibility is achieved. In addition, the interface between austenite and a single variant of martensite was studied by high-resolution and conventional electron microscopy. The atomically sharp, defect free, low energy configuration of the interface suggests that it plays an important role in the lowering of hysteresis. Finally, dynamical modeling of the martensitic transformation using the phase-field micro-elasticity model within the geometrically linear theory succeeded in reproducing the change in microstructure as the compatibility condition is satisfied. Latest results on the extension of these findings in other Ni-Ti based ternary/quaternary systems are also reported.

Abstract The three-dimensional size, morphology and distribution of Ni4Ti3 precipitates growing in binary Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys have been investigated via a slice view procedure in a Dual-Beam FIB/SEM system, in order to better stress-free Ni50.8Ti49.2 alloy with all four variants of precipitates and a compressed Ni51Ti49 alloy with aligned precipitates in one family were studied. The Ni4Ti3 precipitates reach a volume fraction of 9.6% in the reconstructed region of the stress-free alloy and 4.3% in the compressed one. In both cases, the mean volume, specific surface area, sphericity and aspect ratio of the precipitates are calculated and the Pair Distribution Functions of the precipitates are obtained. It is shown that most precipitates in the stress-free sample grow larger and have a more lenticular shape, while those in the compressed sample are more cylindrical. Deviations from these ideal shapes reveal internal steps in the stress-free sample and lamellae formation in the compressed one.

Abstract Neodymium nickelate thin films have been prepared on NdGaO3 substrates by RF magnetron sputtering and post-annealing treatment under oxygen pressure. Transport properties are found to depend strongly on film thickness. Thick films show transport properties close to bulk ceramics, while very thin films exhibit a large transition from metal to insulator which occurs over a wide temperature range with high resistivity. Structure and surface morphology of the films have been investigated by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Thin films (approximate to17 nm) grow heteroepitaxially, while thicker films (approximate to73 nm) show a granular structure. The thinnest sample suggests a symmetry change induced by the epitaxial strain of the substrate. This paper discusses the relationship between microstructure and transport properties.

Title MOTIFS : a monitoring tool for integrated farm sustainability Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Indicator-based monitoring tools are frequently applied for sustainability assessments, also in agriculture. However, many indicators focus on a rather restricted number of sustainability aspects such as economy or ecology. Moreover the choice of the indicator is rarely explained. The aim of our study was to develop an indicator-based monitoring tool for integrated farm sustainability – i.e. taking into account economic and ecological and social aspects – based on a supported vision of sustainable agriculture and using a set of relevant indicators. Hereby, specific attention was paid to aspects of communication and user-friendliness. Four methodological steps were considered: (i) translating the major principles of a supported vision of sustainable Flemish agriculture into concrete and relevant themes; (ii) designing indicators to monitor progress towards sustainability for each of those themes; (iii) aggregating the indicators into an integrated farm sustainability monitoring tool and (iv) applying the monitoring tool on a practical farm, as a first attempt at end-use validation. Stakeholder participation and expert consulting played an important part in each of these methodological steps. As a case study, the methodology was applied to Flemish dairy farms. As a result, we developed MOTIFS, a user-friendly and strongly communicative indicator-based monitoring tool that allows the measurement of progress towards integrated sustainable dairy farming systems and fits within a well-founded methodological framework. MOTIFS is based on the equality of the economic, ecological and social sustainability dimensions, and this equality is inherently built into the system. Through the applied methodology, we founded the selected themes and indicators and we avoided using indicators that are not relevant to the problem at hand.
