Abstract: The η-M6C, γ-M23C6, and π-M11C2 phases (M = Cr, Mn and Fe) have complex cubic lattices with lattice parameters of approximately 1.0 nm. They belong to the CFCC-TmC family (complex face-centered cubic transition metal carbides), display a rich variety of crystal structures, and play in important role in iron alloys and steels. Here we show that first-principles calculations predict high stability for the γ-M23C6 and η-M6C phases, and instability for the π-M11C2 phases, taking into account various compositional and structural possibilities. The calculations also show a wide variety in magnetic properties. The Cr-containing phases were found to be non-magnetic and the Fe-phases to be ferromagnetic, while the Mn-containing phases were found to be either ferrimagnetic or non-magnetic. Details of the local atomic structures, and the formation and stability of these precipitates in alloys are discussed.

Abstract: Atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy records the spatially resolved scattered electron density to infer positions, density, and species of atoms. These data are indispensable for studying the relation between structure and properties in solids. Here, we show how this signal can be augmented by the lateral probability current of the scattered electrons in the object plane at similar resolutions and fields of view. The currents are reconstructed from a series of three atomic resolution TEM images recorded under a slight difference of perpendicular line foci. The technique does not rely on the coherence of the electron beam and can be used to reveal electric, magnetic, and strain fields with incoherent electron beams as well as correlations in inelastic transitions, such as electron magnetic chiral dichroism.

Abstract: Using an effective one-dimensional cluster expansion in combination with first-principles electronic structure calculations we have studied the energetics and electronic properties of Sb-Te layered systems. For a Te concentration between 0 and 60 at. % an almost continuous series of metastable structures is obtained consisting of consecutive Sb bilayers next to consecutive Sb2Te3 units, with the general formula (Sb-2)(n)(Sb2Te3)(m) (n, m = 1,2, ... ). Between 60 and 100 at.% no stable structures are found. We account explicitly for the weak van derWaals bonding between Sb bilayers and Sb2Te3 units by using a recently developed functional, which strongly improves the interlayer bonding distances. At T = 0 K, no evidence is found for the existence of two separate single-phase regions delta and gamma and a two-phase region delta + gamma. Metastable compounds with a Te concentration between 0 and 40 at. % are semimetallic, whereas compounds with a Te concentration between 50 and 60 at. % are semiconducting. Compounds with an odd number of Sb layers are metallic and have a much higher formation energy than those with an even number of consecutive Sb layers, thereby favoring the formation of Sb bilayers.

Abstract: We have revealed thermodynamically stable vortex-antivortex configurations in mesoscopic type I superconducting equilateral triangles. The revealed effect is explained by two factors: (i) vortex confinement in mesoscopic triangles and (ii) appearance of the vortex-antivortex repulsion in mesoscopic type I superconductor triangles in the vicinity of the dual point. The stability of the obtained solutions is examined as a function of material and external parameters – the Ginzburg-Landau parameter K and temperature – as well as a function of a distortion of the sample's shape. The vortex-antivortex. “molecule” turns out to be stable in a wide range of the parameters that makes it possible its experimental visualization.

Abstract: Surface chemistry plays a pivotal role in regulating the morphology of nanoparticles, maintaining colloidal stability, and mediating the interaction with target analytes toward practical applications such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based sensing and imaging. The use of a binary ligand mixture composed of 1,4-benzenedithiol (BDT) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) to provide gold nanostars with long-term stability is reported. This is despite BDT being a bifunctional ligand, which usually leads to bridging and loss of colloidal stability. It is found however that neither BDT nor CTAC alone are able to provide sufficient colloidal and chemical stability. BDT-coated Au nanostars are additionally used as seeds to direct the encapsulation with a gold outer shell, leading to the formation of unusual nanostructures including semishell-coated gold nanostars, which are characterized by high-resolution electron microscopy and electron tomography. Finally, BDT is exploited as a probe to reveal the enhanced local electric fields in the different nanostructures, showing that the semishell configuration provides significantly high SERS signals as compared to other coreshell configurations obtained during seeded growth, including full shells.

Abstract: Addition of yttrium in HfO(2) thin films prepared on silicon by metal organic chemical vapor deposition is investigated in a wide compositional range (2.0-99.5 at. %). The cubic structure of HfO(2) is stabilized for 6.5 at. %. The permittivity is maximum for yttrium content of 6.5-10 at. %; in this range, the effective permittivity, which results from the contribution of both the cubic phase and silicate phase, is of 22. These films exhibit low leakage current density (5x10(-7) A/cm(2) at -1 V for a 6.4 nm film). The cubic phase is stable upon postdeposition high temperature annealing at 900 degrees C under NH(3). Abstract: Principal component analysis (PCA) noise filtering is a popular method to remove noise from experimental electron energy loss (EELS) spectrum images. Here, we investigate the statistical behaviour of this method by applying it on a simulated data set with realistic noise levels. This phantom data set provides access to the true values contained in the data set as well as to many different realizations of the noise. Using least squares fitting and parameter estimation theory, we demonstrate that even though the precision on the estimated parameters can be better as the CramérRao lower bound, a significant bias is introduced which can alter the conclusions drawn from experimental data sets. The origin of this bias is in the incorrect retrieval of the principal loadings for noisy data. Using an expression for the bias and precision of the singular values from literature, we present an evaluation criterion for these singular values based on the noise level and the amount of information present in the data set. This criterion can help to judge when to avoid PCA noise filtering in practical situations. Further we show that constructing elemental maps of PCA noise filtered data using the background subtraction method, does not guarantee an increase in the signal to noise ratio due to correlation of the spectral data as a result of the filtering process.

Abstract: The authors propose a nondestructive method for the determination of the thickness of an amorphous sample. This method is based on the statistics of the phase of the electron exit wave function, which depend on the number of atoms traversed by the incident electron which itself is a function of the thickness of the object. Abstract: Scanning nano-focused X-ray diffraction and high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy are used to investigate the crystal structure of ramp-edge junctions between superconducting electron-doped Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 and superconducting hole-doped La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 thin films, the latter being the top layer. On the ramp, a new growth mode of La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 with a 3.3° tilt of the c-axis is found. We explain the tilt by developing a strain accommodation model that relies on facet matching, dictated by the ramp angle, indicating that a coherent domain boundary is formed at the interface. The possible implications of this growth mode for the creation of artificial domains in morphotropic materials are discussed.

Abstract: Convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED), nano-beam electron diffraction (NBED or NBD), high resolution imaging (HRTEM and HRSTEM) and dark field electron holography (DFEH or HoloDark) are five TEM based techniques able to quantitatively measure strain at the nanometer scale. In order to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of each technique, two samples composed of epitaxial silicon-germanium layers embedded in a silicon matrix have been investigated. The five techniques are then compared in terms of strain precision and accuracy, spatial resolution, field of view, mapping abilities and ease of performance and analysis. (C) 2013 Elsevier By. Abstract: The relationship between the microstructural and internal stress evolution during Ti anodising is discussed. Samples anodised galvanostatically to 12 V and 40 V, corresponding to different stages of the internal stress evolution, were examined by in-plane and cross-section transmission electron microscopy. Electron diffraction patterns have been complemented with stoichiometry data obtained from energy loss near edge structure spectra. The sample anodised to 40 V was observed to consist of two regions, with a crystallised inner region adjacent to the metal/oxide interface. Crystallisation of this region is associated with the presence of large compressive internal stresses which build up during anodising up to 12 V.

Abstract: A structural research of semiconductor compounds for photovoltaic applications CuInSe(2), CuInTe(2) and CuInSeTe, has been done by x-ray diffraction using the Rietveld analysis of experimental diagrams. Besides, in the CuInSeTe compound the electron diffraction and high resolution microscopy techniques have been used. All the studied compounds were polycrystals with chalcopyrite tetragonal structure, I. 42d. A model for the atomic occupancy in each compound has been proposed, and the results have been compared analyzing the Se-Te substitution effect.

Abstract: Nanocrystalline powders of undoped and lanthanide (Pr3+, Tm3+)- doped gadolinium gallium garnet, Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG), were prepared by propellant synthesis and studied by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), electron diffraction (ED), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and luminescence spectroscopy. The x-ray diffraction patterns of the GGG samples were analysed using the Rietveld method. The Rietveld refinement reveals the existence of two garnet-type phases: both are cubic (space group Ia $(3) over bar $d) with a slightly different lattice parameter and probably a slightly different composition. Electron diffraction and electron microscopy measurements confirm the x-ray diffraction results. EDX measurements for lanthanide-doped samples show that stable solid solutions with composition Gd(3-x)Ln(x)Ga(5)O(12), x approximate to 0.3 ( Ln = Pr; Tm) have been obtained. The luminescence properties of the Tm3+ -doped nanocrystalline GGG samples were measured and analysed.
