Abstract |
Annular dark-field transmission electron microscopy uses an annular objective aperture that blocks the central beam and all electrons scattered up to a certain serniangle. A contrast suitable for electron tomography is generated and 3D reconstructions of CdTe tetrapods and C nanotubes (see figure) are successfully obtained. With short exposure times and high contrast, the technique could be useful not only for materials science, but also for biological applications. |

Abstract |
The synthesis and structural characterisation of a new phase with nominal composition Bi4Mn1/3W2/3O8Cl is presented. Conventional and analytical transmission electron microscopy are used to determine the composition, unit-cell symmetry and space group of the compound, whereas a structural model is deducted by exit-wave reconstruction in the transmission electron microscope. This technique allows the microscope information limit of 1.1 angstrom to be reached and the (light) oxygen atoms in the presence of heavier atoms (Bi, W, Mn) to be imaged. The average structure is refined from Xray powder diffraction data using the Rietveld method yielding an orthorhombic unit cell with lattice parameters a 5.467(4) angstrom, b = 5.466(7) angstrom and c = 14.159(3) angstrom and space group Cm2m, which could be described as a Sillen-Aurivillius intergrowth. Abstract |
A ''2222'' cuprate with mercury bilayers (Hg1.5Cu0.2Pr0.3)Ba2Pr2Cu2O10-delta, has been synthesized for the first time. It crystallizes in the P4/nmm space group with a = 3.9072(1) Angstrom and c = 17.219(1) Angstrom. The powder XRD and HREM studies of this new cuprate show that its structure consists of an intergrowth of double pyramidal (oxygen-deficient perovskite) copper layers, with double fluorite-type layers and distorted triple rock salt layers (mercury bilayers). The structure of this phase can be deduced from that of the ''2212'' mercury cuprate (Hg1.5Cu0.2Pr0.3)Ba2PrCu2O8-delta by the introduction of one additional [PrO2]infinity fluorite layer. The regular stacking of the metallic layer and the uniform cationic distribution in the mercury bilayers are remarkable features of this cuprate. The stabilization of the mercury bilayers by praseodymium and the absence of superconductivity are discussed. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc. |

Abstract |
A new mixed-valence ferrite, YBaFe4O7, has been synthesized. Its unique cubic structure, with a = 8.9595(2) Å, is closely related to that of the hexagonal 114 oxides YBaCo4O7 and CaBaFe4O7. It consists of corner-sharing FeO4 tetrahedra, forming triangular and kagome layers parallel to (111)C. In fact, the YBaFe4O7 and CaBaFe4O7 structures can be described as two different ccc and chch close packings of [BaO3]∞ and [O4]∞ layers, respectively, whose tetrahedral cavities are occupied by Fe2+/Fe3+ cations. The local structure of YBaFe4O7 is characterized by a large amount of stacking faults originating from the presence of hexagonal layers in the ccc cubic close-packed YBaFe4O7 structure. In this way, they belong to the large family of spinels and hexagonal ferrites studied for their magnetic properties. Differently from all the ferrites and especially from CaBaFe4O7, which are ferrimagnetic, YBaFe4O7 is an insulating spin glass with Tg = 50 K. |

Abstract |
Superconducting Cu mixed oxyfluoride, Sr,Cu(O, F)(4+delta), was Obtained via fluorination of Sr2CuO3 by XeF2 in the 100-250 degrees C temperature range in a closed Ni container. The prepared samples exhibited a lower T-c in comparison with earlier reported values. Different samples in the Sr-Cu-O-F system were prepared by a solid-state reaction at 220-400 degrees C, but no formation of the oxyfluoride was detected even with an addition of xenon difluoride. These data allow one to draw conclusions on the metastability of the oxyfluoride under the conditions used, Electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction studies revealed large amounts of badly crystallized SrF2; this could be a reason for the small superconducting volume fraction as well as for the inhomogeneous distribution of the anions. |

Abstract |
Combining long-range magnetic order with polarity in the same structure is a prerequisite for the design of (magnetoelectric) multiferroic materials. There are now several demonstrated strategies to achieve this goal, but retaining magnetic order above room temperature remains a difficult target. Iron oxides in the +3 oxidation state have high magnetic ordering temperatures due to the size of the coupled moments. Here we prepare and characterize ScFeO3 (SFO), which under pressure and in strain-stabilized thin films adopts a polar variant of the corundum structure, one of the archetypal binary oxide structures. Polar corundum ScFeO3 has a weak ferromagnetic ground state below 356 K-this is in contrast to the purely antiferromagnetic ground state adopted by the well-studied ferroelectric BiFeO3. |

Abstract |
A method to correlate microstructure from cross-section transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations and transport properties of a single well characterized high-T-c artificial grain boundary junction is reported. A YBa2Cu3O7-delta 45 degrees twist junction exhibiting the typical phenomenology of high T-c Josephson weak links was employed. The TEM sample preparation is based on focused ion beam etching and allows to easily localize the electron transparent area on a microbridge. The reported technique opens clear perspectives in the determination of the microstructural origin of variations in Josephson junction properties, such as the spread in I-c and IcRN values and the presence of different transport regimes in nominally identical junctions. Abstract |
The crystal structure of the K6.4Nb28.2Ta8.1O94 pseudo-tetragonal tungsten bronze-type oxide was determined using a combination of X-ray powder diffraction, neutron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques, including electron diffraction, high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), annular bright field STEM (ABF-STEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray compositional mapping (STEM-EDX). The compound crystallizes in the space group Pbam with unit cell parameters a = 37.468(9) A, b = 12.493(3) A, c = 3.95333(15) A. The structure consists of corner sharing (Nb,Ta)O6 octahedra forming trigonal, tetragonal and pentagonal tunnels. All tetragonal tunnels are occupied by K(+) ions, while 1/3 of the pentagonal tunnels are preferentially occupied by Nb(5+)/Ta(5+) and 2/3 are occupied by K(+) in a regular pattern. A fractional substitution of K(+) in the pentagonal tunnels by Nb(5+)/Ta(5+) is suggested by the analysis of the HAADF-STEM images. In contrast to similar structures, such as K2Nb8O21, also parts of the trigonal tunnels are fractionally occupied by K(+) cations. |

Abstract |
Defects on hollow silica spheres synthesized in a tetraethylorthosilicate-octylamine-HCl-H2O system were recorded by scanning microscope. Based on the results, influences of synthesis composition on the formation of these defects are discussed. It is evidenced that products prepared with different octylamine-to-tetraethylorthosilicate ratios may have surface depressions, cracks and non-hollow microspheres. However, by changing water and acid additions, these defects could be reduced or eliminated. Generally, samples synthesized with a large octylamine addition commonly exhibit surface depressions. A small octylamine or a large water addition benefits the formation of solid silica microspheres among the product. Acid, although is not indispensable for the formation of hollow spheres, helps to eliminate or reduce depressions on the hollow shells. It is explained that the added acid gives rise to a relative localized fast hydrolysis versus condensation, facilitating an easy mobility of hydrolyzed silica species, and consequently the shell surface is smoothened. |

Abstract |
In this paper a particularly simple but efficient method is presented by which samples of alkali-doped C-60 materials or other air-sensitive materials can be prepared and transferred into a transmission electron microscope for direct observations and investigations. Flexible, transparent glove bags are used which are filled to a slight overpressure with dry nitrogen. Under this protective atmosphere, the air-sensitive sample is mounted in the specimen holder and inserted in the vacuum of the electron microscope. Rb6C60 which is prepared and transferred into the microscope in this way has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results confirm the bcc structure and especially the location of the rubidium atoms. |

Abstract |
We report the direct formation of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) by ultrasonication of graphite in dimethylformamide (DMF) upon addition of ferrocene aldehyde (Fc-CHO). The tubular structures appear exclusively at the edges of graphene layers and contain Fe clusters. Pc in conjunction with benzyl aldehyde, or other Fc derivatives, does not induce formation of NT. Higher amounts of Fc-CHO added to the dispersion do not increase significantly MWNT formation. Increasing the temperature reduces the amount of formation of MWNTs and shows the key role of ultrasound-induced cavitation energy. It is concluded that Fc-CHO first reduces the concentration of radical reactive species that slice graphene into small moieties, localizes itself at the edges of graphene, templates the rolling up of a sheet to form a nanoscroll, where it remains trapped, and finally accepts and donates unpaired electron to the graphene edges and converts the less stable scroll into a MWNT. This new methodology matches the long held notion that CNTs are rolled up graphene layers. The proposed mechanism is general and will lead to control the production of carbon nanostructures by simple ultrasonication treatments. |

Abstract |
Synchrotron radiation, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray powder diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy were used to study the structure and thermal behavior of malayaite, CaSnSiO5. No indications of deviation from A2/a symmetry and no structural transitions were observed between 100 and 870 K. HRTEM revealed that the material is free of domains and antiphase boundaries. However, the lattice constants, cell volume, and Raman-active phonons show a thermal discontinuity near 500 K, which is possibly related to variation of the coordination sphere around the highly anisotropic Ca position. |

Abstract |
The development of a stable, efficient and economic catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of water splitting is one of the most hopeful approaches to confront the environmental and energy crisis. A two-step method is employed to obtain metal clusters (Ru, N, Pd etc.) combining single cobalt atoms anchored on nitrogen-doped carbon (Ru/Pt/Pd@Co-SAs/N-C). Based on the synergistic effect between Ru clusters and single cobalt atoms, Ru@Co-SAs/N-C exhibits an outstanding HER electrocatalytic activity. Specifically, Ru@Co-SAs/N-C only needs 7 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH solution, which is much better than commercial 20 wt% PVC (40 mV) catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal the synergy effect between surface Ru nanoclusters and Co-SAs/N-C toward hydrogen adsorption for HER. Additionally, Ru@CoSAs/N-C also exhibits excellent catalytic ability and durability under acidic and neutral media. The present study opens a new avenue towards the design of metal clusters/single cobalt atoms heterostructures with outstanding performance toward HER and beyond. |

Abstract |
Insulating and metallic stripes above and below the Curie temperature, T-C, respectively, were observed by a high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and/or spectroscopy (STS) in A-site ordered and macroscopically strain free epitaxial La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 film grown on MgO substrate. The “insulating” stripes were found to be incommensurable to the lattice and aligned along (110) direction. Metallic stripes were commensurable with periodicity 2a(p)similar to 0.8 nm and aligned parallel to the crystallographic a/b-axis. Formation of these stripes involves competing charge, orbital, and lattice orders and is an outcome of an overlapping of electron wave functions mediated by the local lattice-strain distribution, existed even in A-site ordered film due to the difference in cation radii of La and Ca. Abstract |
Aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to solve several key questions about the surface structure, the particle morphology, and the distribution and nature of nitrogen impurities in detonation nanodiamond (DND) cleaned by a recently developed ozone treatment. All microscopy and spectroscopy measurements are performed at a lowered acceleration voltage (80/120kV), allowing prolonged and detailed experiments to be carried out while minimizing the risk of knock-on damage or surface graphitization of the nanodiamond. High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) demonstrates the stability of even the smallest nanodiamonds under electron illumination at low voltage and is used to image the surface structure of pristine DND. High resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements on the fine structure of the carbon K-edge of nanodiamond demonstrate that the typical * pre-peak in fact consists of three sub-peaks that arise from the presence of, amongst others, minimal fullerene-like reconstructions at the nanoparticle surfaces and deviations from perfect sp(3) coordination at defects in the nanodiamonds. Spatially resolved EELS experiments evidence the presence of nitrogen within the core of DND particles. The nitrogen is present throughout the whole diamond core, and can be enriched at defect regions. By comparing the fine structure of the experimental nitrogen K-edge with calculated energy-loss near-edge structure (ELNES) spectra from DFT, the embedded nitrogen is most likely related to small amounts of single substitutional and/or A-center nitrogen, combined with larger nitrogen clusters. |

Abstract |
The cubic phase of HfO2 was stabilized by addition of yttrium in thin films grown on Si/SiO2 by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The cubic phase was obtained for contents of 6.5 at. % Y or higher at a temperature as low as 470 °C. The complete compositional range (from 1.5 to 99.5 at. % Y) was investigated. The crystalline structure of HfO2 was determined from x-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, and attenuated total-reflection infrared spectroscopy. For cubic films, the continuous increase in the lattice parameter indicates the formation of a solid-solution HfO2Y2O3. As shown by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, yttrium silicate is formed at the interface with silicon; the interfacial layer thickness increases with increasing yttrium content and increasing film thickness. The dependence of the intrinsic relative permittivity r as a function of Y content was determined. It exhibits a maximum of ~30 for ~8.8 at. % Y. The cubic phase is stable upon postdeposition high-temperature annealing at 900 °C under NH3. |

Abstract |
Adsorption of sulfide ions onto a surface of starch capped silver nanoparticles upon addition of thioacetamide was investigated. UVvis absorption spectroscopy revealed that the adsorption of the sulfide ion on the surface of the silver nanoparticles induced damping as well as blue shift of the silver surface plasmon resonance band. Further increase in thioacetamide concentration led to shift of the resonance band toward higher wavelengths indicating the formation of the continuous Ag2S layer on the silver surface. Thus fabricated nanoparticles were investigated using electron microscopy techniques (TEM, HRTEM, and HAADF-STEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which confirmed their coreshell structure. |
