Abstract: High critical current densities can be realized in high-temperature superconductors such as YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) by controlling density, shape, size and direction of a secondary phase. Whereas the dependence on the growth rate and deposition temperature has been widely studied as key parameters for nano-engineering the pinning landscape, the vicinal tilt of the substrate surface might have an additional influence. Therefore, we deposited 6 mol% BaHfO3 (BHO) doped YBCO on SrTiO3 (STO) substrates with vicinal angles α between 0° and 40° to identify the influence of the tilt on the growth mode of BHO. An undisturbed epitaxial growth of the superconductor as well as an epitaxial integration of the BHO phase in the YBCO matrix is observed for all vicinal angles investigated. The critical temperature is constant up to α = 20°, whereas the self-field critical current density at 77 K starts to decrease above 10°. A detailed structural analysis of the film cross sections showed that the growth mode of BHO changes already for a vicinal tilt of 2° from a pure c-axis oriented growth to a layered structure with BHO aligned parallel to the YBCO ab-plane. We identified a strong influence of such a microstructure on the current flow in BHO doped YBCO films on STO substrates as well as on MgO based coated conductors prepared by inclined substrate deposition

Abstract: The melting transition of the five different lattices of a bilayer crystal is studied using the Monte-Carlo (MC) technique. We found the surprising result that the square lattice has a substantial larger melting temperature as compared to the other lattice structures, which is a consequence of the specific topology of the temperature induced defects. A new melting criterion is formulated which we show to be universal for bilayers as well as for single layer crystals.

Abstract: The effect of vacancy defects on the structural properties and the thermal stability of free standing silicene – a buckled structure of hexagonally arranged silicon atoms – is studied using reactive molecular dynamics simulations. Pristine silicene is found to be stable up to 1500 K, above which the system transits to a three-dimensional amorphous configuration. Vacancy defects result in local structural changes in the system and considerably reduce the thermal stability of silicene: depending on the size of the vacancy defect, the critical temperature decreases by more than 30%. However, the system is still found to be stable well above room temperature within our simulation time of 500 ps. We found that the, stability of silicene can be increased by saturating the dangling bonds at the defect edges by foreign atoms (e.g., hydrogen).

Abstract: We present a theoretical study on optical properties such as optical conductance and light transmission coefficient for mono- and multi-layer graphene systems with AB- and ABC-stacking. Considering an air/graphene/dielectric-water structure, the optical coefficients for those graphene systems are examined and compared. The universal optical conductance sigma(N)(0)=N pi e(2)/(2h) for N layer graphene systems in the visible region is verified. For N 3 layer graphene, the mini-gap induced absorption edges can be observed in odd layers AB-stacked multilayer graphene, where the number and position of the absorption edges are decided by the layers number N. Meanwhile, we can observe the optical absorption windows for those graphene systems in the infrared to terahertz bandwidth (0.2-150 THz). The absorption window is induced by different transition energies required for inter- and intra-band optical absorption channels. We find that the depth and width of the absorption window can be tuned not only via varying temperature and electron density but also by changing the number of graphene layers and the stacking order. These theoretical findings demonstrate that mono- and multi-layer graphene systems can be applied as frequency tunable optoelectronic devices working in infrared to terahertz bandwidth. Abstract: A far-infrared absorption study of electrons in lightly-doped GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattices is presented. Both weakly and strongly coupled superlattices are investigated, and the difference between intersubband transitions and transitions between extended minibands is demonstrated. At low temperatures, the absorption spectra are dominated by donor transitions. The 1s-2p(z) transition, which is intimately related to the intersubband transition, is observed. All experimental data are compared to an envelope function calculation for the miniband structure and a variational calculation for the donor energies. Excellent agreement between experiment and theory is achieved.

Abstract: Air pollution caused by the lime production industry has become a serious problem with potential effects to human health, especially in developing countries. Colombo is a city included in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba (capital of Parana State) in South Brazil. In Colombo city, a correlation has been shown between the lime production and the number of persons who need respiratory treatment in a local hospital, indicating that the lime industry can cause deleterious health effects in the exposed workers and population. This research was conducted to deal firstly with the characterization of the size distribution and chemical compositions of particles emitted from lime manufacturing and subsequently to assess the deposition rate of inhaled dolomitic lime aerosol particles in the human respiratory tract. The elemental chemical composition and particle size of individual atmospheric particles was quantitatively elucidated, including low-Z components like C, N and 0, as well as higher-Z elements, using automated electron probe microanalysis. Information concerning the bulk composition is provided by energy-dispersive X-ray detection. The majority of the respirable particulate matter identified was composed of aluminosilicates, Ca-Mg oxides, carbon-rich particles, mixtures of organic particles and Ca-Mg carbonates, soot and biogenic particles. In view of the chemical composition and size distribution of the aerosol particles, local deposition efficiencies in the human respiratory system were calculated, revealing the deposition of CaO center dot MgO at extrathoracic, tracheobronchial and pulmonary levels. The results of this study offer evidence to the threat of the fine and coarse particles emitted from dolomite lime manufacturing, allowing policy-makers to better focus their mitigation strategies in an effective way, as well as to the dolomite producers for the purpose of designing and/or implementing improved emission controls.

Abstract: We have studied the transport properties of LaTiO3/SrTiO3 (LTO/STO) heterostructures. In spite of 2D growth observed in reflection high energy electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy images revealed that the samples tend to amorphize. Still, we observe that the structures are conducting, and some of them exhibit high conductance and/or superconductivity. We established that conductivity arises mainly on the STO side of the interface, and shows all the signs of the two-dimensional electron gas usually observed at interfaces between STO and LTO or LaAlO3, including the presence of two electron bands and tunability with a gate voltage. Analysis of magnetoresistance (MR) and superconductivity indicates the presence of spatial fluctuations of the electronic properties in our samples. That can explain the observed quasilinear out-of-plane MR, as well as various features of the in-plane MR and the observed superconductivity.

Abstract: We present the preparation of a new architecture of coated conductor by Inkjet printing of low fluorine YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) on top of SuperOx tape: CGO/LMO/IBAD-MgO/Y2O3/Al-2 O-3/Hastelloy. A five-layered multideposited, 475-nm-thick YBCO film was structurally and magnetically characterized. A good texture was achieved using this combination of buffer layers, requiring only a 30-nm-thin ion-beam-assisted deposition (IBAD)-MgO layer. The LF-YBCO CC reaches self-field critical current density values of J(c)(GB) similar to NJ 15.9 MA/cm(2) (5 K), similar to 1.23 MA/cm(2) (77 K) corresponding to an I-c (77 K) = 58.4 A/cm-width. Inkjet printing offers a flexible and cost effective method for YBCO deposition, allowing patterning of structures.
