“Electronic structure of the valence band in cylindrical strained InP/InGaP quantum dots in an external magnetic field”. Tadic, Peeters FM, Physica. E: Low-dimensional systems and nanostructures
T2 –, 14th International Conference on the Electronic Properties of, Two-Dimensional Systems, July 30-August 03, 2001, Prague, Czech Republic 12, 880 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1016/S1386-9477(01)00445-3
Abstract: The multiband effective-mass model of cylindrical self-assembled quantum dots in a magnetic field normal to the layer of the quantum dots is presented. The strain distribution is computed by the valence force field method. The strain-dependent multiband Hamiltonian is modified into an axially symmetric form, which commutes with the total angular momentum F-2 = fh. where f denotes the total magnetic quantum number. The heavy hole and the light hole parts in the mixed hole state are resolved. It is found that the heavy hole component dominates in the ground states for both f = 1/2 and 3/2. The electronic structure exhibits numerous anticrossings between the hole levels. The Zeeman splitting between the +\f\ and -\f\ states is also computed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We introduce a differential geometry description of the path lines, stream lines and particles contours in hydrodynamics. We present a generalized form of a Korteweg-de Vries type of equation for the exterior of a circle. Nonlinearities from the boundary conditions, surface tension and the Euler equations are taken into account, but the flow is considered inviscid and irrotational. For the circular case we describe the traveling waves shapes, solitons and the particles trajectories.

Abstract: Electrochemistry offers highly flexible routes to fabrication of a wide variety of mesostructures, including three-dimensional (3D) crystallites, thin films and nanowires. Using this method we have grown various 3D superconducting Pb mesostructures with vastly different morphologies. We present here results on a truncated(half)-icosahedron with a hexagonal base and a tripod structure with a triangular base. Using Hall probe magnetometry we have obtained magnetisation curves for these structures at several temperatures and see evidence of geometry-driven flux entry and exit as well as flux trapping caused by specific sample geometries. We also observe behaviour that we interpret in terms of the formation of giant vortices, bearing in mind that bulk Pb is a type-I superconducting material.

“Green function approach to superconductivity in nanowires”. Saniz R, Partoens B, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 85, 144504 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.85.144504
Abstract: Superconductivity in nanowires made of weak coupling superconductor materials is investigated using a Green function approach. We show that these are multigap systems in which the ratio Delta(T)/k(B)T(c) is to a large extent similar to what is observed in some high-T-c two-gap systems, such as MgB2 and some of the Fe-based superconductors. On the other hand, because of confinement, the superfluid density has a temperature behavior of the form n(s)(T) = 1 – (T/T-c)(3) near T-c, thus deviating from the BCS behavior for bulk superconductors.

Abstract: The interband optical absorption in Si/SiO2 quantum wells is calculated as function of the well width (W) and the evolution from an indirect to a direct gap material as function of the well width is investigated. In order to compute the electron states in the conduction band, the 30-band k . p model is employed, whereas the 6-band Luttinger-Kohn model is used for the hole states. We found that the effective direct band gap in the quantum well agrees very well with the W-2 scaling result of the single-band model. The interband matrix elements for linear polarized light oscillate with the quantum well width, which agrees qualitatively with a single band calculation. Our theoretical results indicate that the absorption can be maximized by a proper choice of the well width. However, the obtained absorption coefficients are at least an order of magnitude smaller than for a typical direct semiconductor even for a well width of 2 nm. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: We investigate the formation of quantum confined structures on the surface of a liquid helium film suspended on a nanostructured substrate. We show theoretically that, by nanostructuring the substrate, it is possible to change the geometry of the liquid helium surface, opening the possibility of designing and controlling the formation of valleys with different shapes. By applying an external electric field perpendicular to the substrate plane, surface electrons can be trapped into these valleys, as in a quantum dot. We investigate how the external parameters, such as the electric field strength and the height of the liquid helium bath, can be tuned to control the energy spectrum of the trapped surface electrons.

Abstract: We investigate theoretically the ballistic transport in a two-dimensional electron gas, which is rolled up as a tube and is micro-structured into a Hall bar. A uniform magnetic field applied to such a curved surface results in a non-uniform perpendicular magnetic field. The bend resistances become asymmetric with respect to the orientation of the magnetic field due to the varying magnetic field along the junction. The resistance asymmetry is strongly affected by corrugation due to the varying mobility along different crystallographic directions. We compare our results with a recent transport measurement.

Abstract: We have studied the dependence of the binding energy of a cubane dimer on the mutual orientation of and the distance between the composing monomers employing the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation scheme (MP2) with the cc-pVDZ molecular basis set. We have found that the MP2 contribution from the molecular correlations is responsible for the bound state of the cubane dimer, whereas the Hartree-Fock contribution remains anti-bonding at all intermolecular distances. Starting with two molecules in the standard orientation and centers of mass at (0,0,0) and (0,0,d), respectively, the maximal binding energy is found at d = 5.125 Å and one of the monomers rotated by 45° about the z-axis. This configuration implies that the hydrogen atoms belonging to different monomers tend to repel each other. The results are in agreement with experimental data on the optimal packing of cubane molecules in the solid state.

Abstract: We present results of Monte Carlo simulations of chains of C-60 and chains of C-70 molecules encapsulated in a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT). We observe the changes in the configuration of the fullerene molecules when varying tube radius and temperature. In particular, the evolution of the pair correlation functions reveal a transition from linear harmonic chain behavior to a hard-sphere liquid upon heating, demonstrating the possibility of tuning properties of C-60- and C-70@SWCNT peapods with radius and temperature.

Abstract: It is well-known that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory is a reliable and powerful theoretical tool to investigate the magnetic response of a superconducting state. However, in its standard form, this approach is not applicable to atomically uniform nano-thin superconducting films which are effective multiband superconductors. Here we discuss a relevant generalization of the GL theory, focusing on the underlying intraband-pairing approximation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
