Abstract The microstructure of the charge/orbital ordering Ruddleden-Popper phase PrCa2Mn2O7 was studied by transmission electron microscopy along both the [001] and the [110] orientation. Three coexisting charge/orbital ordering phases CO1, CO2, and CO3 were observed along the [001] orientation at room temperature. Different from the one-dimensional modulation in the CO1 and CO2 phase, the CO3 phase is characterized by two sets of mutually perpendicular structural modulations. From [110] high angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy, we found that the Pr atoms locate in-between the bilayer MnO6 octahedra, which is different from the previous reports.

Abstract Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta (123) bulk superconductors have been synthesised by the oxygen controlled melt growth method. Unlike the YBaCuO system, platinum doping or Nd4Ba2Cu2O10 (422) rich compositions do not refine the peritectic '422' secondary phase, but the latter improves the microstructural quality. Low oxygen partial pressure and high purity precursors are necessary to achieve in a reproducible manner high T-c and J(c) (up to 56 000 A/cm(2) in 0T and 30 000 A/cm(2) under 1.5T). The fishtail effect observed at 77 K is compared with the one observed in the YBCO system, and is discussed in terms of oxygen deficiency, Nd-Ba substitution, defects and vortex lattice. Our TEM observations did not evidence any Nd-Ba substituted clusters in the Nd123 matrix; however, some diffuse streaks, observed in the [100] zone ED pattern, support the fact that the source of the peak effect in this system is mainly due to oxygen disorder and low stability of the orthorhombic phase. Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The microstructure and phase transitions in the perovskite-based ferroelectric lead scandium tantalate, Pb(Sc0.5Ta0.5)O-3 have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The effects of ordering of Sc and Ta cations are apparent in reciprocal space as well as in direct space images. High-resolution observations allow direct structure imaging of the domain structure. The structure of the low temperature ferroelectric phase is studied by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and electron microdiffraction. The relaxer behaviour of this paraelectric-ferroelectric transition is displayed by diffuse intensities in the SAED patterns at temperatures around the Curie point.

Abstract The structure and interface characteristics of (LaVO3)6m(SrVO3)m superlattices deposited on a (100)-SrTiO3 substrate were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cross-section TEM studies revealed that both LaVO3 (LVO) and SrVO3 (SVO) layers are good single-crystal quality and epitaxially grown with respect to the substrate. It is evidenced that LVO layers are made of two orientational variants of a distorted perovskite compatible with bulk LaVO3, while SVO layers suffers from a tetragonal distortion due to the substrate-induced stain. Electron energy loss spectroscopy investigations indicate changes in the fine structure of the V L23 edge, related to a valence change between the LaVO3 and the SrVO3 layers.

Abstract We report the high temperature electronic transport properties of SrFeO3 − ä epitaxial thin films obtained by pulsed laser deposition on NdGaO3(110) substrates. The films show total conductivity higher than the bulk material and apparent activation energy of about 0.12 eV in O2, lower than reported values for SrFeO3 − ä films. The conductivity dependence with oxygen partial pressure shows a power dependence with an exponent close to + 1/4, in agreement with expected point defect equilibrium. For a given oxygen partial pressure, the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) shows a low positive value of about 1.52.5 10− 3 K− 1, which is still suitable for resistive oxygen sensing applications. The transport properties of the films are discussed in view of their particular microstructure.

Abstract Microstructures of TiN/CrN multilayer coatings deposited on austenite steel (Cr Ni 18 8) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) are characterized using transmission electron microscopy while their mechanical properties were assessed in a ball-on-disk test. All coatings have the same total thickness of about 1 ìm. The individual layers show a highly defective columnar structure, which is characterized by conventional electron microscopy (TEM) as well as by high resolution TEM. These techniques, combined with measurements of the local chemical composition through EDS prove that PLD allows to produce fully separated CrN and TiN layers. The friction, and consequently the wear, are lowered by increasing the total number of layers in the coating.

Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The microstructure of BaTiO3 thin films, epitaxially deposited on (001) MgO by pulsed laser ablation, has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The films are always c-axis-orientated, but dislocations, {111} stacking faults, and antiphase boundaries are frequently observed. Conventional TEM and high-resolution microscopy allow one to deduce the Burgers vectors of dislocations as b(1) = <100> or b(2) = <110>, both being perfect dislocations. Most extrinsic stacking faults are ending at 1/3<112> or 1/3<111> partial dislocations; the displacement vector of the antiphase boundaries is 1/2<101>. Studying the interfacial structure by means of zone images taken along [100] and [110] shows that the misfit is mainly released by dislocations with Burgers vectors of 1/2<110> and 1/2<101>.

Abstract Metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) as well as porous coordination polymers (PCPs) are porous, organicinorganic hybrid solids with zeolite-like structures and properties. Due to their extraordinarily high surface area and well defined pore structure MOFs can be used for the stabilization of metal nanoparticles with adjustable size. The embedded metal nanoparticles are still accessible for other reagents due to the high porosity of the MOF systems. This fact makes metal@MOF systems especially interesting for heterogeneous catalysis, gas storage and chemical sensing. This review compiles the cases of metal nanoparticles supported by or embedded into MOFs reported so far and the main aspects and problems associated with these novel nanocomposite systems. The determination of the dispersion and the location of the particles at the MOF support, the control of the loading degree and its effect on the catalytic activity of the system are discussed as well as the partial degradation of the MOF structure upon particle formation. Examples of the introduction of stabilizing groups into the MOF network that direct the loading and can influence the size and shape of the embedded particles are still rare and point into the possible direction of future investigations. Finally, the formation of bimetallic nanoparticles, which are stabilized and supported by a MOF network, will also be reviewed.

Abstract Multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were decorated with metal clusters by thermal evaporation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that the nature and extent of metal coverage can be varied by plasma treating the MWCNT surface. The metal clusters on oxygen plasma treated arc-discharge MWCNTs have a more dense distribution than the clusters evaporated on as-synthesized are-discharge MWCNTs. In contrast, the plasma treatment did not affect the cluster distribution on CVD MWCNTs. Analyses of the valence band and the core levels by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggest poor charge transfer between gold clusters and MWCNTs; on the contrary suggest good charge transfer between Ni clusters and MWCNTs. Abstract The transport and magnetic measurements of polycrystalline Pb1.6V8O16 hollandite reveal a concomitant metal to insulator and antiferromagnetic transition at TMI≈140 K. A clear localization is found below TMI, evidenced by a rapid increase in the absolute value of the negative Seebeck coefficient. The structural study by x-ray and transmission electron microscopy confirms the hollandite structure and shows that no structural transition occurs at TMI, ruling out a possible charge orbital ordering. The negative Seebeck coefficient observed from 50 K up to 900 K, with values reaching S=−38 μV K−1 at 900 K, is explained by the electron doping of ∼1.4e− in the V empty t2g orbitals responsible for the bad metal resistivity (ρ900 K∼2 mΩ cm). As this S value is close to that obtained by considering only the spin and orbital degeneracies, it is expected that |S| for such vanadates will not be sensitive at high temperature to the t2g band filling

Title Metal@COFs : covalent organic frameworks as templates for Pd nanoparticles and hydrogen storage properties of Pd@COF-102 hybrid material Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Chemistry: a European journal Abbreviated Journal Chem-Eur J

Abstract Three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been demonstrated as a new class of templates for nanoparticles. Photodecomposition of the [Pd(eta 3-C3H5)(eta 5-C5H5)]@COF-102 inclusion compound (synthesized by a gas-phase infiltration method) led to the formation of the Pd@COF-102 hybrid material. Advanced electron microscopy techniques (including high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography) along with other conventional characterization techniques unambiguously showed that highly monodisperse Pd nanoparticles ((2.4 +/- 0.5) nm) were evenly distributed inside the COF-102 framework. The Pd@COF-102 hybrid material is a rare example of a metal-nanoparticle-loaded porous crystalline material with a very narrow size distribution without any larger agglomerates even at high loadings (30 wt %). Two samples with moderate Pd content (3.5 and 9.5 wt %) were used to study the hydrogen storage properties of the metal-decorated COF surface. The uptakes at room temperature from these samples were higher than those of similar systems such as Pd@metalorganic frameworks (MOFs). The studies show that the H2 capacities were enhanced by a factor of 2-3 through Pd impregnation on COF-102 at room temperature and 20 bar. This remarkable enhancement is not just due to Pd hydride formation and can be mainly ascribed to hydrogenation of residual organic compounds, such as bicyclopentadiene. The significantly higher reversible hydrogen storage capacity that comes from decomposed products of the employed organometallic Pd precursor suggests that this discovery may be relevant to the discussion of the spillover phenomenon in metal/MOFs and related systems.
