“Even-odd transition in the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in a two-dimensional electron gas subjected to periodic magnetic and electric modulations”. Shi J, Peeters FM, Edmonds KW, Gallagher BL, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 66, 035328 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.66.035328
Abstract: We investigate low-temperature magnetotransport of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases subjected to one-dimensional periodic magnetic and electric modulations. Our previous quantum perturbation theory is extended to lower temperatures and the energy broadening due to impurity scattering is incorporated. Numerical calculations are made for situations where several Landau bands overlap. We find that the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are dominated by collisional resistance. The amplitudes of the SdH oscillations are strongly modulated and the positions of the SdH minima switch between even and odd Landau-level filling factors, in the resistance both parallel and perpendicular to the one-dimensional modulation. This is a consequence of the internal structure (i.e., smeared out van Hove singularities) of overlapping Landau bands. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with recent experiments.

Abstract: The behavior of excitons in spatially modulated magnetic fields is described taking into account the exciton spin contribution. The results show that the exciton trapping in periodic magnetic fields is possible and dependent on the modulation profile.

Abstract: The one vortex entry in a superconducting disk is investigated within the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau theory near the first critical field. We find that in mesoscopic superconducting disks the magnetic flux enters with fractions of one flux quantum phi(0) = ch/2e. For disks with a very smooth surface it is possible to drive the Meissner state so far into the metastable region that at the vortex entry a net amount of flux is expelled from the superconductor. We show that the magnetic field for flux entry is very sensitive to indentations of the disk surface and only weakly to bulges. On the other hand the flux exit field is practically insensitive to such geometrical surface defects. Our results are in agreement with recent experimental findings. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We present an approximate description of the giant vortex state in a thin mesoscopic superconducting disk within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau approach. Analytical asymptotic expressions for the energies of the states with fixed vorticity are obtained when a small magnetic flux is accumulated in the disk. The spectrum of the lowest Landau levels of such a disk is also discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

“High-temperature phase transition in the whitlockite-type phosphate Ca9In(PO4)7”. Morozov VA, Belik AA, Stefanovich SY, Grebenev VV, Lebedev OI, Van Tendeloo G, Lazoryak BI, Journal of solid state chemistry 165, 278 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1006/jssc.2001.9521
Abstract: The double phosphate Ca9In(PO4)(7) was obtained by solid-state reaction and was studied by room and high-temperature Xray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, second-harmonic generation (SHG) technique, differential scanning calorimetry, dielectric and conductivity measurements. The beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) room-temperature phase is related to the mineral whitlockite and is similar to beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2). It has space group R (3) over barc, with unit cell parameters: a = 10.4008(1) Angstrom, c = 37.272(1) Angstrom, Z = 6. The structure was refined by the Rietveld method (R-wp = 4.69, R-I = 1.81). A reversible first-order beta <----> beta' phase transition of the ferroelectric type with T-c = 902 K is revealed by SHG, differential scanning calorimetry and dielectric measurements. The centrosymmetric beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) (973 K) has space group R (3) over barc, a = 10.4611(2) Angstrom, c = 37.874 (1) Angstrom (R-wp = 4.27, R-I = 4.11). Compared to the low-temperature beta-Ca9In(PO4)(7) structure, beta'-Ca9In(PO4)(7) can be described as an orientational disordering of the P1O(4) tetrahedra together with a calcium disordering on the M3 site. Abstract: We have calculated analytically the spatial distribution of the electric field and current density, and obtained the Joule heat generation rate in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a non-homogeneous magnetic field of a 'chess' configuration. The generation of the Joule heat from the 2DEG is mainly concentrated near the singular corners of each 'chess' field and tends to zero in other corners. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The propagation of a short laser beam in plasma is investigated analytically Relativistic ponderomotive force and space charge effects are included, and an equation describing the evolution of the laser spot size is derived. It is shown that self-consistent electron cavitation can lead to self channelling and thus long-distance self-focusing of the laser. The condition for the latter to occur is given.

Abstract: The microstructure of BaTiO3 thin films, epitaxially deposited on (001) MgO by pulsed laser ablation, has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The films are always c-axis-orientated, but dislocations, {111} stacking faults, and antiphase boundaries are frequently observed. Conventional TEM and high-resolution microscopy allow one to deduce the Burgers vectors of dislocations as b(1) = <100> or b(2) = <110>, both being perfect dislocations. Most extrinsic stacking faults are ending at 1/3<112> or 1/3<111> partial dislocations; the displacement vector of the antiphase boundaries is 1/2<101>. Studying the interfacial structure by means of zone images taken along [100] and [110] shows that the misfit is mainly released by dislocations with Burgers vectors of 1/2<110> and 1/2<101>.

Abstract: High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) studies of the microstructure and specific defects in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) precursors and cubic boron nitride (c-BN) crystals made under high-pressure high-temperature conditions revealed the presence of half-nanotubes at the edges of the h-BN particles. Their sp(3) bonding tendency could strongly influence the nucleation rates of c-BN. The atomic resolution at extended dislocations was insufficient to allow us to determine the stacking fault energy in the c-BN crystals. Its mean value of 191 +/- 15 mJ m(-2) is of the same order of magnitude as that of diamond. High-frequency (94 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance studies on c-BN single crystals have produced new data on the D1 centres associated with the boron species. Ion-beam-induced luminescence measurements have indicated that c-BN is a very interesting luminescent material, which is characterized by four luminescence bands and exhibits a better resistance to ionizing radiation than CVD diamond.

T2 –, 16th International Winterschool on Electronic Properties of Novel, Materials, MAR 02-09, 2002, KIRCHBERG, AUSTRIA , 417 (2002)
Abstract: We have studied the molecular energy terms of the hole configurations (h(u)(+))(m), m=2,3,4,5 of C-60(m+) cations and the electronic configurations (t(1u))(n) n=2,3,4, as well as (t(1u))(n-1)t(1g) of the C-60(n-) anions. The lowest terms (within an energy span of 0.03 eV) for C-60(2+) are three triplets T-3(1g), (3)G(g), T-3(2g) and for C-60(3+) are three quartets T-4(1u), (4)G(u), T-4(2u), which favor Jahn-Teller distortions. For the ground state of C-60(2-) we find a triplet T-3(1g) in agreement with Hund's rules. Our method takes into account intramolecular direct and exchange multipolar Coulomb interactions.
