Abstract | A number of recent computational material design studies based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations have put forward a new class of materials with electrically switchable chemical characteristics that can be exploited in the development of tunable gas storage and electrocatalytic applications. We find systematic flaws in almost every computational study of gas adsorption on polarized or charged surfaces, stemming from an improper and unreproducible treatment of periodicity, leading to very large errors of up to 3 eV in some cases. Two simple corrective procedures that lead to consistent results are proposed, constituting a crucial course correction to the research in the field.

Abstract | Microwave (MW) plasmas represent a promising solution for efficient CO2 dissociation. MW discharges are also very versatile and can be sustained at various pressure and gas flow regimes. To identify the most favorable conditions for the further scale-up of the CO2 decomposition reaction, a MW plasma reactor operating in pure CO2 in a wide pressure range (200 mbar–1 bar) is studied. Three different gas flow configurations are explored: a direct, reverse and a vortex regime. The CO2 conversion and energy efficiency drop almost linearly with increasing pressure, regardless of the gas flow regime. The results obtained in the direct flow configuration underline the importance of post-discharge cooling, as the exhaust of the MW plasma reactor in this regime expanded into the vacuum chamber without additional quenching. As a result, this system yields exhaust temperatures of up to 1000 K, which explains the lowest conversion (∼3.5% at 200 mbar and 2% at 1 bar). A post-discharge cooling step is introduced for the reverse gas inlet regime and allows the highest conversion to be achieved (∼38% at 200 mbar and 6.2% at 1 bar, with energy efficiencies of 23% and 3.7%). Finally, a tangential gas inlet is utilized in the vortex configuration to generate a swirl flow pattern. This results in the generation of a stable discharge in a broader range of CO2 flows (15–30 SLM) and the highest energy efficiencies obtained in this study (∼25% at 300 mbar and ∼13% at 1 bar, at conversions of 21% and 12%). The experimental results are complemented with computational fluid dynamics simulations and with the analysis of the latest literature to identify the further research directions.

Abstract | Over the last decade, scanning transmission electron microscopy has become one of the most powerful tools to characterise nanomaterials at the atomic scale. Often, the ultimate goal is to retrieve the three-dimensional structure, which is very challenging since small species are typically sensitive to electron irradiation. Nevertheless, measuring individual atomic positions is crucial to understand the relation between the structure and physicochemical properties of these (nano)materials. In this review, we highlight the latest approaches that are available to reveal the 3D atomic structure of small species. Finally, we will provide an outlook and will describe future challenges where the limits of electron microscopy will be pushed even further.

Abstract | Atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is often regarded as an elastic film that is impermeable to gases. The high stabilities in thermal and chemical properties allow h-BN to serve as a gas barrier under extreme conditions. Here, we demonstrate the isolation of hydrogen in bubbles of h-BN via plasma treatment. Detailed characterizations reveal that the substrates do not show chemical change after treatment. The bubbles are found to withstand thermal treatment in air, even at 800°C. Scanning transmission electron microscopy investigation shows that the h-BN multilayer has a unique aligned porous stacking nature, which is essential for the character of being transparent to atomic hydrogen but impermeable to hydrogen molecules. In addition, we successfully demonstrated the extraction of hydrogen gases from gaseous compounds or mixtures containing hydrogen element. The successful production of hydrogen bubbles on h-BN flakes has potential for further application in nano/ micro-electromechanical systems and hydrogen storage.

Abstract | Moiré fringes are used throughout a wide variety of applications in physics and engineering to bring out small variations in an underlying lattice by comparing with another reference lattice. This method was recently demonstrated in Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy imaging to provide local strain measurement in crystals by comparing the crystal lattice with the scanning raster that then serves as the reference. The images obtained in this way contain a beating fringe pattern with a local period that represents the deviation of the lattice from the reference. In order to obtain the actual strain value, a region containing a full period of the fringe is required, which results in a compromise between strain sensitivity and spatial resolution. In this paper we propose an advanced setup making use of an optimised scanning pattern and a novel phase stepping demodulation scheme. We demonstrate the novel method on a series of 16 nm Si-Ge semiconductor FinFET devices in which strain plays a crucial role in modulating the charge carrier mobility. The obtained results are compared with both Nano-beam diffraction and the recently proposed Bessel beam diffraction technique. The setup provides a much improved spatial resolution over conventional moiré imaging in STEM while at the same time being fast and requiring no specialised diffraction camera as opposed to the diffraction techniques we compare to. |

Abstract | The pyroantimonate pigments Naples yellow and lead tin antimonate yellow are recognized as some of the most stable synthetic yellow pigments in the history of art. However, this exceptional lightfastness is in contrast with experimental evidence suggesting that this class of mixed oxides is of semiconducting nature. In this study the electronic structure and light-induced behavior of the lead pyroantimonate pigments were determined by means of a combined multifaceted analytical and computational approach (photoelectrochemical measurements, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, STEM-EDS, STEM-HAADF, and density functional theory calculations). The results demonstrate both the semiconducting nature and the lightfastness of these pigments. Poor optical absorption and minority carrier mobility are the main properties responsible for the observed stability. In addition, novel fundamental insights into the role played by Na atoms in the stabilization of the otherwise intrinsically unstable Pb2Sb2O7 pyrochlore were obtained.

Abstract | The metal-insulator transition (MIT) in strongly correlated oxides is a topic of great interest for its potential applications, such as Mott field effect transistors and sensors. We report that the MIT in high quality epitaxial SrVO3 (SVO) thin films is present as the film thickness is reduced, lowering the dimensionality of the system, and electron-electron correlations start to become the dominant interactions. The critical thickness of 3 u.c is achieved by avoiding effects due to off-stoichiometry using optimal growth conditions and excluding any surface effects by a STO capping layer. Compared to the single SVO thin films, conductivity enhancement in SVO/STO superlattices is observed. This can be explained by the interlayer coupling effect between SVO sublayers in the superlattices. Magnetoresistance and Hall measurements indicate that the dominant driving force of MIT is the electron–electron interaction.

Abstract | Environmental conditions during real-world application of bimetallic core–shell nanoparticles (NPs) often include the use of elevated temperatures, which are known to cause elemental redistribution, in turn significantly altering the properties of these nanomaterials. Therefore, a thorough understanding of such processes is of great importance. The recently developed combination of fast electron tomography with in situ heating holders is a powerful approach to investigate heat-induced processes at the single NP level, with high spatial resolution in 3D. In combination with 3D finite-difference diffusion simulations, this method can be used to disclose the influence of various NP parameters on the diffusion dynamics in Au@Ag core–shell systems. A detailed study of the influence of heating on atomic diffusion and alloying for Au@Ag NPs with varying core morphology and crystallographic details is carried out. Whereas the core shape and aspect ratio of the NPs play a minor role, twin boundaries are found to have a strong influence on the elemental diffusion.

Abstract | Understanding light–matter interactions in nanomaterials is crucial for optoelectronic, photonic, and plasmonic applications. Specifically, metal nanoparticles (NPs) strongly interact with light and can undergo shape transformations, fragmentation and ablation upon (pulsed) laser excitation. Despite being vital for technological applications, experimental insight into the underlying atomistic processes is still lacking due to the complexity of such measurements. Herein, atomic resolution electron tomography is performed on the same mesoporous-silica-coated gold nanorod, before and after femtosecond laser irradiation, to assess the missing information. Combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the experimentally determined 3D atomic-scale morphology, the complex atomistic rearrangements, causing shape deformations and defect generation, are unraveled. These rearrangements are simultaneously driven by surface diffusion, facet restructuring, and strain formation, and are influenced by subtleties in the atomic distribution at the surface. |

Abstract | Recycling of end-of-life polyvinyl chloride (PVC) calls for solutions to deal with the vast amounts of harmful phthalate plasticizers that have historically been incorporated in PVC. Here, we report on the upcycling of such waste-extracted phthalate esters into analogues of the much safer diisononyl 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylate plasticizer (DINCH), via a catalytic one-pot (trans)esterification-hydrogenation process. For most of the virgin phthalates, Ru/Al2O3 is a highly effective hydrogenation catalyst, yielding >99% ring-hydrogenated products under mild reaction conditions (0.1 mol% Ru, 80 degrees C, 50 bar H-2). However, applying this reaction to PVC-extracted phthalates proved problematic, (1) as benzyl phthalates are hydrogenolyzed to benzoic acids that inhibit the Ru-catalyst, and (2) because impurities in the plasticizer extract (PVC, sulfur) further retard the hydrogenation. These complications were solved by coupling the hydrogenation to an in situ (trans)esterification with a higher alcohol, and by pretreating the extract with an activated carbon adsorbent. In this way, a real phthalate extract obtained from post-consumer PVC waste was eventually completely (>99%) hydrogenated to phthalate-free, cycloaliphatic plasticizers.

Abstract | Understanding the thermal stability of bimetallic nanoparticles is of vital importance to preserve their functionalities during their use in a variety of applications. In contrast to well-studied bimetallic systems such as Au@Ag, heat-induced morphological and compositional changes in Au@Pt nanoparticles are insufficiently understood, even though Au@Pt is an important material for catalysis. To investigate the thermal instability of Au@Pt nanorods at temperatures below their bulk melting point, we combined in situ heating with two- and three-dimensional electron microscopy techniques, including three-dimensional energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The experimental results were used as input for molecular dynamics simulations, to unravel the mechanisms behind the morphological transformation of Au@Pt core–shell nanorods. We conclude that thermal stability is influenced not only by the degree of coverage of Pt on Au but also by structural details of the Pt shell.

Abstract | We study the structure and phonon spectrum of a two-dimensional bilayer system of classical charged dipoles oriented perpendicular to the plane of the layers for equal density in each layer. This system can be tuned through six different crystalline phases by changing the interlayer separation or the charge and/or dipole moment of the particle. The presence of the charge on the dipole particles is responsible for the nucleation of five staggered phases and a disordered phase which are not found in the magnetic dipole bilayer system. These extra phases are a consequence of the competition between the repulsive Coulomb and the attractive dipole interlayer interaction. We present the phase diagram and determine the order of the phase transitions. The phonon spectrum of the system was calculated within the harmonic approximation, and a nonmonotonic behavior of the phonon spectrum is found as a function of the effective strength of the interparticle interaction. The stability of the different phases is determined.

Abstract | We expand on a recent study of a lattice model of interacting particles [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 110601 (2013)]. The adsorption isotherm and equilibrium fluctuations in particle number are discussed as a function of the interaction. Their behavior is similar to that of interacting particles in porous materials. Different expressions for the particle jump rates are derived from transition-state theory. Which expression should be used depends on the strength of the interparticle interactions. Analytical expressions for the self-and transport diffusion are derived when correlations, caused by memory effects in the environment, are neglected. The diffusive behavior is studied numerically with kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations, which reproduces the diffusion including correlations. The effect of correlations is studied by comparing the analytical expressions with the kMC simulations. It is found that the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion can exceed the self-diffusion. To our knowledge, this is the first time this is observed. The diffusive behavior in one-dimensional and higher-dimensional systems is qualitatively the same, with the effect of correlations decreasing for increasing dimension. The length dependence of both the self-and transport diffusion is studied for one-dimensional systems. For long lengths the self-diffusion shows a 1/L dependence. Finally, we discuss when agreement with experiments and simulations can be expected. The assumption that particles in different cavities do not interact is expected to hold quantitatively at low and medium particle concentrations if the particles are not strongly interacting.

Abstract | A theoretical study of ultrashort laser-induced electron emission from a negatively biased metallic cathode has been performed. Classical as well as tunneling electron emission mechanisms are considered. It was found that electron emission is governed by an interplay of processes inside as well as above the cathode. A hybrid model is proposed, where the electron distribution within the target is retrieved from Boltzmann scattering integrals, while the charge distribution above it is studied by a Particle-In-Cell simulation. The results indicate that non-equilibrium effects determine the initial emission process, whereas the space charge above the target suppresses the effectively emitted charge.

Abstract | Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision simulations, coupled with an external circuit, are used to investigate the behavior of pulsed dual-frequency (DF) capacitively coupled plasmas (CCPs). It is found that the phase shift θ between the high (or low) frequency source and the pulse modulation has a great influence on the ion density and the ionization rate. By pulsing the high frequency source, the time-averaged ion density shows a maximum when θ = 90∘. The time-averaged ion energy distribution functions (IEDFs) at the driven electrode, however, keep almost unchanged, illustrating the potential of pulsed DF-CCP for independent control of ion density (and flux) and ion energy. A detailed investigation of the temporal evolution of the plasma characteristics indicates that several high frequency harmonics can be excited at the initial stage of a pulse period by tuning the phase shift θ, and this gives rise to strong sheath oscillations, and therefore high ionization rates. For comparison, the pulsing of the low frequency source is also studied. In this case, the ion density changes slightly as a function of time, and the time-averaged ion density shows the same trend as in the HF modulation for different phase shifts θ. Moreover, the time-averaged IEDFs at the driven electrode can be modulated, showing the potential to reduce the maximum ion bombardment energy.

Abstract | The magneto-Stark effect in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) coupled quantum well (CQW) induced by an in-plane magnetic field is investigate theoretically. Unlike the usual electro-Stark effects, in a DMS CQW the Lorenz force leads to a spatially separated exciton. The in-plane magnetic field can shift the ground state of the magnetoexciton from a zero in-plane center of mass (CM)/momentum to a finite CM momentum, and render the ground state of magnetoexciton stable against radiative recombination due to momentum conservation. Abstract | We demonstrate controllable dual-bath electrodeposition of nickel on architecture-tunable three-dimensional (3D) silver microcrystals. Magnetic hysteresis loops of individual highly faceted Ag-Ni core-shell elements reveal magnetization reversal that comprises multiple sharp steps corresponding to different stable magnetic states. Finite-element micromagnetic simulations on smaller systems show several jumps during magnetization reversal which correspond to transitions between different magnetic vortex states. Structures of this type could be realizations of an advanced magnetic data storage architecture whereby each element represents one multibit, storing a combination of several conventional bits depending on the overall number of possible magnetic states associated with the 3D core-shell shape.

Abstract | We investigate the influence of the spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) on the electron distribution and the optical absorption of a two-electron quantum dot. It is shown that the interplay between the SOIs makes the two-electron quantum dot behave like two laterally coupled quantum dots and the anisotropic distribution can be rotated from [110] to [11®0] by reversing the direction of the perpendicular electric field and detect it through the optical absorption spectrum.

Abstract | The interaction between the surface of a 3D topological insulator and a skyrmion/anti-skyrmion structure is studied in order to investigate the possibility of electron confinement due to the skyrmion presence. Both hedgehog (Neel) and vortex (Bloch) skyrmions are considered. For the hedgehog skyrmion, the in-plane components cannot be disregarded and their interaction with the surface state of the topological insulator (TI) has to be taken into account. A semi-classical description of the skyrmion chiral angle is obtained using the variational principle. It is shown that both the hedgehog and the vortex skyrmion can induce bound states on the surface of the TI. However, the number and the properties of these states depend strongly on the skyrmion type and the skyrmion topological number N-Sk. The probability densities of the bound electrons are also derived where it is shown that they are localized within the skyrmion region. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract | We show that bulk semiconductor materials do not allow perfectly complementary p- and n-channel tunnel field-effect transistors (TFETs), due to the presence of a heavy-hole band. When tunneling in p-TFETs is oriented towards the gate-dielectric, field-induced quantum confinement results in a highest-energy subband which is heavy-hole like. In direct-bandgap IIIV materials, the most promising TFET materials, phonon-assisted tunneling to this subband degrades the subthreshold swing and leads to at least 10x smaller on-current than the desired ballistic on-current. This is demonstrated with quantum-mechanical predictions for p-TFETs with tunneling orthogonal to the gate, made out of InP, In0.53Ga0.47As, InAs, and a modified version of In0.53Ga0.47As with an artificially increased conduction-band density-of-states. We further show that even if the phonon-assisted current would be negligible, the build-up of a heavy-hole-based inversion layer prevents efficient ballistic tunneling, especially at low supply voltages. For p-TFET, a strongly confined n-i-p or n-p-i-p configuration is therefore recommended, as well as a tensily strained line-tunneling configuration. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract | We report on work function measurements on graphene, which is exfoliated over a predefined array of wells in silicon oxide, by Kelvin probe force microscopy operating in a vacuum. The obtained graphene sealed microchambers can support large pressure differences, providing controllable stretching of the nearly impermeable graphene membranes. These measurements allow detecting variations of the work function induced by the mechanical stresses in the suspended graphene where the work function varies linearly with the strain and changes by 62 +/- 2 meV for 1 percent of strain. Our related ab initio calculations result in a work function variation that is a factor of 1.4 larger than the experimental value. The limited discrepancy between the theory and the experiment can be accounted for by a charge transfer from the unstrained to the strained graphene regions. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract | Recently, two stable allotropes (germancite and stancite) for the group IV elements (Ge and Sn) with a staggered layered dumbell structure were proposed to be three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetals [Phys. Rev. B 93, 241117 (2016)]. A pair of Dirac points is on the rotation axis away from the time-reversal invariant momentum, and the stability of the 3D bulk Dirac points is protected by the C-3 rotation symmetry. Here, we use the first principles calculations to investigate GexSny alloys which share the same rhombohedral crystal structure with the space group of D-3d(6). Six GexSny alloys are predicted to be energetically and dynamically stable, where (x, y) = (8, 6) and (6, 8) and the alpha and beta phases of (10, 4) and (4, 10). Our results demonstrate that all the six GexSny alloys are topological Dirac semimetals. The different nontrivial surface states and surface Fermi arcs are identified. Our work will substantially enrich the family of 3D Dirac semimetals which are within the reach of experimental realization. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract | The energy spectrum and eigenstates of single-layer black phosphorus nanoribbons in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and an in-plane transverse electric field are investigated by means of a tight-binding method, and the effect of different types of edges is examined analytically. A description based on a continuum model is proposed using an expansion of the tight-binding model in the long-wavelength limit. Thewave functions corresponding to the flatband part of the spectrum are obtained analytically and are shown to agree well with the numerical results from the tight-binding method for both narrow (10 nm) and wide (100 nm) nanoribbons. Analytical expressions for the critical magnetic field at which Landau levels are formed and the ranges of wave numbers in the dispersionless flatband segments in the energy spectra are derived. We examine the evolution of the Landau levels when an in-plane lateral electric field is applied, and we determine analytically how the edge states shift withmagnetic field. For wider nanoribbons, the conductance is shown to have a characteristic staircase shape in combined magnetic and electric fields. Some of the stairs in zigzag and skewed armchair nanoribbons originate from edge states that are found in the band gap.

Abstract | We use a variational technique to study the many-body phase diagram of electrons and holes in n-doped and p-doped monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We find a total of four different phases. (i) A fully spin polarized and valley polarized ferromagnetic state. (ii) A state with no global spin polarization but with spin polarization in each valley separately, i.e., spin-valley locking. (iii) A state with spin polarization in one of the valleys and little to no spin polarization in the other valley. (iv) A paramagnetic state with no valley polarization. These phases are separated by first-order phase transitions and are determined by the particle density and the dielectric constant of the substrate. We find that in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field the four different phases persist. In the case of n-doped MoS2, a fifth phase, which is completely valley polarized but not spin polarized, appears for magnetic fields larger than 7 T and for magnetic fields larger than 23 T completely replaces the second phase.

Abstract | We investigate the energy spectrum, wave functions, and local density of states of an electrical dipole placed on a sheet of gapped graphene as function of the charge strength Z alpha for different sizes of the dipole and for different regularization parameters. The dipole is modeled as consisting of a positive and negative charge. Bound states are found within the gap region with some energy levels that anticross and others that cross as function of the impurity strength Z alpha. The anticrossings are more pronounced and move to higher charges Z alpha when the length of the dipole decreases. These energy levels turn into atomic collapse states when they enter the positive (or negative) energy continuum. A smooth transition from the single-impurity behavior to the dipole one is observed: The states diving towards the continuum in the single-impurity case are gradually replaced by a series of anticrossings that represent a continuation of the diving states in the single-impurity case. By studying the local density of states at the edge of the dipole we show how the series of anticrossings persist in the positive and negative continuum.

Abstract | Despite the general belief that hydrogen-bonded ferro- and antiferroelectrics undergo a pure order/disorder transition at the structural instability, new NMR data and a new theoretical concept yield convincing evidence that a pronounced displacive component is present in these systems, which modifies substantially the temperature dependencies of the tunnel and lattice mode frequencies. The experiments and their interpretation are presented. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract | Electrical transport properties of the two-dimensional electron gas are studied in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field B = Bz and of a weak one-dimensional electric (V0 cos (Kx)) or magnetic (B0 = B0 cos (Kx)z) modulation where B0 << B, K = 2-pi/a, and a is the modulation period. In either case the discrete Landau levels broaden into bands whose width: (1) is proportional to the modulation strength, (2) it oscillates with B, and (3) it gives rise to magnetoresistance oscillations, at low B, that are different in period and temperature dependence from the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) ones, at higher B. For equal energy modulation strengths, V0 = heB0/m*, the magnetic bandwidth at the Fermi energy is about one order of magnitude larger than the electric one. The same holds for the oscillation amplitude of the electrical magnetoresistivity tensor. For two-dimensional modulations the energy spectrum has the same structure but with different scales. For weak magnetic fields and equal modulation strengths the gaps in the spectrum can be much larger in the magnetic case thus making easier the observability of the spectrum's fine structure.
