Abstract | We describe the plasma chemistry in a helium flowing atmospheric pressure afterglow (FAPA) used for analytical spectrometry, by means of a quasione-dimensional (1D) plasma chemical kinetics model. We study the effect of typical impurities present in the feed gas, as well as the afterglow in ambient humid air. The model provides the species density profiles in the discharge and afterglow regions and the chemical pathways. We demonstrate that H, N, and O atoms are formed in the discharge region, while the dominant reactive neutral species in the afterglow are O3 and NO. He* and He2* are responsible for Penning ionization of O2, N2, H2O, H2, and N, and especially O and H atoms. Besides, He2+ also contributes to ionization of N2, O2, H2O, and O through charge transfer reactions. From the pool of ions created in the discharge, NO+ and (H2O)3H+ are the dominant ions in the afterglow. Moreover, negatively charged clusters, such as NO3H2O− and NO2H2O−, are formed and their pathway is discussed as well. Our model predictions are in line with earlier observations in the literature about the important reagent ions and provide a comprehensive overview of the underlying pathways. The model explains in detail why helium provides a high analytical sensitivity because of high reagent ion formation by both Penning ionization and charge transfer. Such insights are very valuable for improving the analytical performance of this (and other) ambient desorption/ionization source(s).

Abstract | This study aims at sensing in situ reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) and specifically superoxide anion (O-2(center dot-)) in aqueous buffer solutions exposed to cold atmospheric plasmas (CAPs). CAPs were generated by ionizing He gas shielded with variable N-2/O-2 mixtures. Thanks to ultramicroelectrodes protected against the high electric fields transported by the ionization waves of CAPs, the production of superoxide and several RONS was electrochemically directly detected in liquids during their plasma exposure. Complementarily, optical emissive spectroscopy (OES) was used to study the plasma phase composition and its correlation with the chemistry in the exposed liquid. The specific production of O-2(center dot-), a biologically reactive redox species, was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), in both alkaline (pH 11), where the species is fairly stable, and physiological (pH 7.4) conditions, where it is unstable. To understand its generation with respect to the plasma chemistry, we varied the shielding gas composition of CAPs to directly impact on the RONS composition at the plasma-liquid interface. We observed that the production and accumulation of RONS in liquids, including O(2)(center dot-)depends on the plasma composition, with N-2-based shieldings providing the highest superoxide concentrations (few 10s of micromolar at most) and of its derivatives (hundreds of micromolar). In situ spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses provide a high resolution kinetic and quantitative understanding of the interactions between CAPs and physiological solutions for biomedical applications.

Abstract | This paper gives an overview of the modeling work developed in our group in the last 25 years for various plasmas used in analytical spectrochemistry, i.e., glow discharges (GDs), inductively coupled plasmas (ICPs), and laser ablation (LA) for sample introduction in the ICP and for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The modeling approaches are briefly presented, which are different for each case, and some characteristic results are illustrated. These plasmas are used not only in analytical chemistry but also in other applications, and the insights obtained in these other fields were quite helpful for us to develop models for the analytical plasmas. Likewise, there is now a huge interest in plasma–liquid interaction, atmospheric pressure glow discharges (APGDs), and dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) for environmental, medical, and materials applications of plasmas. The insights obtained in these fields are also very relevant for ambient desorption/ionization sources and for liquid sampling, which are nowadays very popular in analytical chemistry, and they could be very helpful in developing models for these sources as well.

Abstract | The six platinum group elements (Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt) can be determined in geological samples down to the μg kg−1 level, by using nickel sulphide fire assay and neutron activation of the residue ramaining after dissolution of the nickel sulphide button in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Losses for the platinum group elements during this dissolution step are usually insignificant, except when the elements are present at ultra-trace levels. The can be recovered from the filtrate by coprecipitation with tellerium. The latter approach also permits determination of silver, which is significantly lost in the hydrochloric acid treatment (recovery <98% instead of typically ≈ 10%). The coprecipitation with tellurium considerably improves the results for gold (recovery ≈ 95% instead of typically 75%).

Abstract | The determination of silicon via the 28Si(n,p)28 Al reaction by means of 14-MeV neutrons is applied to the analysis of pollution and natural aerosols. A Whatman 41 filter (40 cm2) on which airborne particulate material has been collected is compressed into a 3 × 12.7 mm pellet. Standards are prepared in the same way from clean filters spiked with a silicate solution. After a 50-s irradiation and a 75-s decay time, the sample is counted for 2 min with 5 × 5 NaI(Tl) well detector. The 1.779-MeV photopeak of 28Al is measured with a single channel sealer chain or with a multichannel analyser. The reproducibility, sensitivity and liability to interference from other elements were investigated for both counting systems. The homogeneity of the pellets and the filters was checked. The overall precision of one single-channel determination was estimated to be 3.5% after a 24-h high-volume sampling time. Samples collected in urban, industrial and remote areas with concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 15 μg Si m-3 air were analysed and the results are discussed.

Abstract | A fast (25 min) non-destructive determination of silicon in steel by 14-MeV neutron activation is described. The 1.78-MeV 28Al activity, induced by the reaction 28Si(n,p)28Al, is counted on a NaI(Tl) detector. An oxygen flux monitor is used to normalise to the same neutron flux. Two methods are described to correct for the 56Mn activity (2.58 h), induced into the iron matrix via 56Fe(n,p)56Mn. Nuclear interferences of phosphorus and aluminium have been examined. Special attention has been paid to stainless steels. A sensitivity of 0.02 to 0.05% of silicon is obtained. The precision is 2 to 3% for steels containing above 1% silicon, and 7% for 0.1% of silicon.

Abstract | Non-destructive 14-MeV neutron activation analysis for silicon in steel has been applied with 56Mn as internal standard.56Mn is formed from the iron matrix via the 56Fe(n,p)56Mn reaction. Several methods of internal standardisation via56Mn are discussed. The 0.84-MeV photopeak of 56Mn is recommended if steel samples of about the same composition are to be analysed. Chemically analysed steel samples are used as silicon standards. A precision of 0.7% was obtained for an analysis plus standardisation time of 13 min. Special attention was paid to interferences produced by concentration changes of impurity elements. Several possible sources of errors were investigated.

Abstract | A detailed account is given of neutron and γ-ray attenuation effects in 14-MeV neutron activation analysis of oxygen. Appropriate neutron cross-section values have been determined in two different ways and compared with literature values. It appears that the attenuation process is best described in terms of nonelastic scattering cross-sections. It is also shown that the narrow beam total γ-ray attenuation coefficients at 6 MeV, given in the literature are suitable for correction purposes if 16N γ-rays are counted with a window of 4.56.5 MeV. Attention was paid to the contribution of β-rays when the 16N activity is counted in this energy interval with a NaI(Tl) detector.

Abstract | A general standardization method is described for the determination of oxygen in solid samples via the 16O(n,p)16N reaction. Two systems of flux monitoring are considered: the sample versus standard comparator method and BF3 monitoring. The average flux in sample and standard, fast neutron shielding, fast neutron scattering, absorption of fast neutrons, absorption of 16N γ-rays and counting efficiency of sample and standard are considered. The influence of the target diameter on the obtained correction factors has also been studied. Total achievable accuracy is believed to be about 1%.

Abstract | In this theoretical study, the electron emission from a copper surface under ultrashort pulsed laser irradiation is investigated using a one dimensional particle in cell model. Thermionic emission as well as multi-photon photoelectron emission were taken into account. The emitted electrons create a negative space charge above the target, consequently the generated electric field reduces the electron emission by several orders of magnitude. The simulations indicate that the space charge effect should be considered when investigating electron emission related phenomena in materials under ultrashort pulsed laser irradiation of metals.the word abstract, but do replace the rest of this text. ©2010 American Institute of Physics

Abstract | The study presents a 2D fluid plasma model of a gliding arc discharge for dissociation of CO2 which allows its subsequent conversion into value-added chemicals. The model is based on the balance equations of charged and neutral particles, the electron energy balance equation, the gas thermal balance equation and the current continuity equation. By choosing the modeling domain to be the plane perpendicular to the arc current, the numerical calculations are significantly simplified. Thus, the model allows us to explore the influence of the gas instabilities (turbulences) on the energy efficiency of CO2 conversion. This paper presents results for plasma parameters at different values of the effective turbulent thermal conductivity leading to enhanced energy transport.

Abstract | We report a plasma‐assisted CO2hydrogenation to CH3OH over Fe2O3/γ‐Al2O3catalysts, achieving 12% CO2conversion and 58% CH3OH selectivity at a temperature of nearly 80°C atm pressure. We investigated the effect of various supports and loadings of the Fe‐based catalysts, as well as optimized reaction conditions. We characterized catalysts by X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD), hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H2‐TPR), CO2and CO temperature programmed desorption (CO2/CO‐TPD), high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Mössbauer, and Fourier transform infrared(FTIR). The XPS results show that the enhanced CO2conversion and CH3OH selectivity are attributed to the chemisorbed oxygen species on Fe2O3/γ‐Al2O3. Furthermore, the diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTs) and TPD results illustrate that the catalysts with stronger CO2adsorption capacity exhibit a higher reaction performance. In situDRIFTS gain insight into the specific reaction pathways in the CO2/H2plasma. This study reveals the role of chemisorbed oxygen species as a key intermediate, and inspires to design highly efficient catalysts and expand the catalytic systems for CO2hydrogenation to CH3OH.

Abstract | The unique plasma-specific features and physical phenomena in the organization of nanoscale soild-state systems in a broad range of elemental composition, structure, and dimensionality are critically reviewed. These effects lead to the possibility to localize and control energy and matter at nanoscales and to produce self-organized nano-solids with highly unusual and superior properties. A unifying conceptual framework based on the control of production, transport, and self-organization of precursor species is introduced and a variety of plasma-specific non-equilibrium and kinetics-driven phenomena across the many temporal and spatial scales is explained. When the plasma is localized to micrometer and nanometer dimensions, new emergent phenomena arise. The examples range from semiconducting quantum dots and nanowires, chirality control of single-walled carbon nanotubes, ultra-fine manipulation of graphenes, nano-diamond, and organic matter to nano-plasma effects and nano-plasmas of different states of matter.

Abstract | Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a partially ionized gas that gains attention as a well-tolerated cancer treatment that can enhance anti-tumor immune responses, which are important for durable therapeutic effects. This review offers a comprehensive and critical summary on the current understanding of mechanisms in which CAP can assist anti-tumor immunity: induction of immunogenic cell death, oxidative post-translational modifications of the tumor and its microenvironment, epigenetic regulation of aberrant gene expression, and enhancement of immune cell functions. This should provide a rationale for the effective and meaningful clinical implementation of CAP. As discussed here, despite its potential, CAP faces different clinical limitations associated with the current CAP treatment modalities: direct exposure of cancerous cells to plasma, and indirect treatment through injection of plasma-treated liquids in the tumor. To this end, a novel modality is proposed: plasma-treated hydrogels (PTHs) that can not only help overcome some of the clinical limitations but also offer a convenient platform for combining CAP with existing drugs to improve therapeutic responses and contribute to the clinical translation of CAP. Finally, by integrating expertise in biomaterials and plasma medicine, practical considerations and prospective for the development of PTHs are offered. |

Abstract | Black phosphorus (BP) has recently triggered an unprecedented interest in the 2D community. However, many of its unique properties are not exploited and the well-known environmental vulnerability is not conquered. Herein, a type-I mixed-dimensional (0D-1D) van der Waals heterojunction is developed, where three-atomic-layer BP quantum dots (QDs) are assembled on a single ZnO nanorod (NR). By adjusting the indium (In) content in ZnO NRs, the degree and even the direction of surface charge transfer doping within the heterojunction can be tuned, which result in selective Raman scattering enhancements between ZnO and BP. The maximal enhancement factor is determined as 4340 for BP QDs with sub-ppm level. Furthermore, an unexpected long-term ambient stability (more than six months) of BP QDs is revealed, which is ascribed to the electron doping from ZnO:In NRs. The first demonstration of selective Raman enhancements between two inorganic semiconductors as well as the improved stability of BP shed light on this emerging 2D material.

Abstract | This study hypothesizes that the application of low-dose nonthermal biocompatible dielectric barrier discharge plasma (DBD-NBP) to human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) will inhibit colony formation but not cell death and induce matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression, extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation, and subsequent cell migration, which can result in enhanced wound healing. HGFs treated with plasma for 3 min migrate to each other across the gap faster than those in the control and 5-min treatment groups on days 1 and 3. The plasma-treated HGFs show significantly high expression levels of the cell cycle arrest-related p21 gene and enhanced MMP activity. Focal adhesion kinase (FAK) mediated attenuation of wound healing or actin cytoskeleton rearrangement, and plasma-mediated reversal of this attenuation support the migratory effect of DBD-NBP. Further, this work performs computer simulations to investigate the effect of oxidation on the stability and conformation of the catalytic kinase domain (KD) of FAK. It is found that the oxidation of highly reactive amino acids (AAs) Cys427, Met442, Cys559, Met571, Met617, and Met643 changes the conformation and increases the structural flexibility of the FAK protein and thus modulates its function and activity. Low-dose DBD-NBP-induces host cell cycle arrest, ECM breakdown, and subsequent migration, thus contributing to the enhanced wound healing process.

Abstract | ZrO2 and HfO2 nanoparticles are homogeneously dispersed in SiO2 matrices (supported film and bulk powders) by copolymerization of two oxozirconium and oxohafnium clusters (M4O(2)(OMc)(12), M= Zr, Hf; OMc = OC(O)-C(CH3)=CH2) with (methacryloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (MAPTMS, (CH2=C(CH3)C(O)O)-(CH2)(3)Si(OCH3)(3)). After calcination (at a temperature >= 800 degrees C), a silica matrix with homogeneously distributed MO2 nanocrystallites is obtained. This route yields a spatially homogeneous dispersion of the metal precursors inside the silica matrix, which is maintained during calcination. The composition of the films and the powders is studied before and after calcination by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). The local environment of the metal atoms in one of the calcined samples is investigated by using X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD) the crystallization of Hf and Zr oxides is seen at temperatures higher than those expected for the pure oxides, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows the presence of well-distributed and isolated crystalline oxide nanoparticles (540 nm).

Abstract | Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a source of cell‐damaging oxidant molecules that may be used as low‐cost cancer treatment with minimal side effects. Liquids treated with cold plasma and enriched with oxidants are a modality for non‐invasive treatment of internal tumors with cold plasma via injection. However, liquids are easily diluted with body fluids which impedes high and localized delivery of oxidants to the target. As an alternative, plasma‐treated hydrogels (PTH) emerge as vehicles for the precise delivery of oxidants. This study reports an optimal protocol for the preparation of injectable alginate PTH that ensures the preservation of plasma‐generated oxidants. The generation, storage, and release of oxidants from the PTH are assessed. The efficacy of the alginate PTH in cancer treatment is demonstrated in the context of cancer cell cytotoxicity and immunogenicity–release of danger signals and phagocytosis by immature dendritic cells, up to now unexplored for PTH. These are shown in osteosarcoma, a hard‐to‐treat cancer. The study aims to consolidate PTH as a novel cold plasma treatment modality for non‐invasive or postoperative tumor treatment. The results offer a rationale for further exploration of alginate‐based PTHs as a versatile platform in biomedical engineering.

Abstract | Plasma-based nitrogen fixation for fertilizer production is an attractive alternative to the fossil fuel-based industrial processes. However, many factors hinder its applicability, e.g., the commonly observed inverse correlation between energy consumption and production rates or the necessity to enhance the selectivity toward NO2, the desired product for a more facile formation of nitrate-based fertilizers. In this work, we investigated the use of a rotating gliding arc plasma for nitrogen fixation at elevated pressures (up to 3 barg), at different feed gas flow rates and composition. Our results demonstrate a dramatic increase in the amount of NOx produced as a function of increasing pressure, with a record-low EC of 1.8 MJ/(mol N) while yielding a high production rate of 69 g/h and a high selectivity (94%) of NO2. We ascribe this improvement to the enhanced thermal Zeldovich mechanism and an increased rate of NO oxidation compared to the back reaction of NO with atomic oxygen, due to the elevated pressure.

Abstract | Plasma catalysis is emerging for plasma-assisted gas conversion processes. However, the underlying mechanisms of plasma catalysis are poorly understood. In this work, we present a 1D heterogeneous catalysis model with axial dispersion (i.e., accounting for back-mixing and molecular diffusion of fluid elements in the process stream in the axial direction), for plasma-catalytic NO production from N2/O2 mixtures. We investigate the concentration and reaction rates of each species formed as a function of time and position across the catalyst, in order to determine the underlying mechanisms. To obtain insights into how the performance of the process can be further improved, we also study how changes in the postplasma gas flow composition entering the catalyst bed and in the operation conditions of the catalytic stage affect the performance of NO production.

Abstract | The current global energy crisis indicated that increasing our insight into nonfossil fuel nitrogen fixation pathways for synthetic fertilizer production is more crucial than ever. Nonequilibrium plasma is a good candidate because it can use N2 or air as a N source and water directly as a H source, instead of H2 or fossil fuel (CH4). In this work, we investigate NH3 gas phase formation pathways from humid N2 and especially humid air up to 2.4 mol % H2O (100% relative humidity at 20 °C) by optical emission spectroscopy and Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy. We demonstrate that the nitrogen fixation capacity is increased when water vapor is added, as this enables HNO2 and NH3 production in both N2 and air. However, we identified a significant loss mechanism for NH3 and HNO2 that occurs in systems where these species are synthesized simultaneously; i.e., downstream from the plasma, HNO2 reacts with NH3 to form NH4NO2, which rapidly decomposes into N2 and H2O. We also discuss approaches to prevent this loss mechanism, as it reduces the effective nitrogen fixation when not properly addressed and therefore should be considered in future works aimed at optimizing plasma-based N2 fixation. In-line removal of HNO2 or direct solvation in liquid are two proposed strategies to suppress this loss mechanism. Indeed, using liquid H2O is beneficial for accumulation of the N2 fixation products. Finally, in humid air, we also produce NH4NO3, from the reaction of HNO3 with NH3, which is of direct interest for fertilizer application. |
