Title In-situ TEM study of the Ni5Al3 to B2 + L12 decomposition in Ni65Al35 Type A1 Journal article
Year 1995 Publication Materials letters Abbreviated Journal Mater Lett
  Volume 23 Issue Pages 105-111
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Homogenised and quenched Ni65Al35 samples were heated and studied in situ in a CM20 electron microscope up to 900 degrees C. The Ni5Al3 phase first forming around 550 degrees C in the quenched L1(0) microtwinned martensite starts to decompose around 800 degrees C yielding B2 precipitates in a twinned L1(2) matrix. The latter twinning is a remainder of the microtwinning in the original room temperature martensite. Also the crystallographic relations between precipitates and matrix can be traced back to the original formation of twinned martensite plates within the austenite. Some aspects of the dynamics of the process are discussed on the basis of snap shots and video recordings.

Abstract The relationships between incommensurability, charge ordering and magnetotransport properties in Nd0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites have been studied by electron diffraction and lattice imaging versus temperature with 0.02 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.07. All compositions show an incommensurate superstructure over the whole temperature domain, despite the fact that they are ferromagnetic and conductive below 140 K, The q-vector (1/2 – delta)a* decreases with increasing temperature for all compositions x. For a given temperature q also decreases with x. Lattice images obtained at low temperature give a clear view of the characteristics of the incommensurate structure. They also provide a better understanding of the charge ordering process. The low-temperature form of the Cr-doped manganites is not a perfectly doubled cell [[2a(p)root 2 x 2a(p) x a(p)root 2]], but defects inducing a tripled cell occur pseudo-periodically.   Abstract The variation of structures and superconducting properties by changing extra oxygen or fluorine atoms concentration in Hg-based Cu mixed oxides and YBa2Cu3O6+delta was studied. The data obtained by NPD study of Hg-1201 can be considered as an evidence of the conventional oxygen doping mechanism with 2 delta holes per (CuO2) layer. The extra oxygen atom was found to be located in the middle of the Hg mesh only. Different formal charges of oxygen and fluorine inserted into reduced 123 structure results in its distinct variations. The fluorine incorporation into strongly reduced YBa2Cu3O6+delta causes a significant structural rearrangement and the formation of a new compound with a composition close to YBa2Cu3O6F2 (tetragonal alpha = 3.87 Angstrom and c approximate to 13 Angstrom), which structure was deduced from the combined results of X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. Fluorination treatment by XeF2 of nonsuperconducting 123 samples causes an appearance of bulk superconductivity with T-c up to 94K.

Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The magneto resistive perovskites Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 and Pr0.5Sr0.41Ca0.09MnO3 undergo a transition from anti ferromagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic metal as function of temperature. The room temperature phase is orthorhombic with the space group Imma and the cell parameters a approximate to root 2a(p), b approximate to 2a(p), and c approximate to root 2a(p). A structural phase transition related to charge ordering accompanying the transition from ferromagnetic state to antiferromagnetic state has been evidenced by low temperature electron diffraction. This transition is reversible and a new superstructure, with a P-type orthorhombic cell. and lattice parameters parameters a approximate to 2 root 2a(p), b approximate to 2a(p), and c approximate to root 2a(p), is formed.

Title Crystal structure of Bi6Sr8-xCa3+xO22(-0.5\leq x\leq1.7): a mixed valence bismuth oxide related to perovskite Type A1 Journal article
Year 1998 Publication Chemistry of materials Abbreviated Journal Chem Mater
  Volume 10 Issue 7 Pages 1875-1881
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The crystal structure of BiSr8-xCa3+xO22 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This phase is the same as Bi9Sr11Ca5Oy that was previously studied by several authors as a secondary phase in the Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O system and coexists in thermodynamic equilibrium with the superconductors Bi2Sr2CuO6 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c, with cell parameters a 11.037(3) Angstrom, b = 5.971(2) Angstrom, c = 19.703(7) Angstrom, beta = 101.46(3)degrees Z = 2. The structure was solved by direct methods and full-matrix least-squares refinement. It is built up by perovskite-related blocks of composition [Sr8-xBi2Ca3+xO16] that intergrow with double rows [Bi4O6] running along b. The perovskite blocks are formed by groups of five octahedra that are shifted from each other 3/2 root 2a(p) along [110](p) (a(p) being the parameter of the cubic perovskite subcell) in a zigzag configuration and are aligned with this direction parallel to the one forming an angle of 25" with the c axis. In turn, the perovskite blocks [Sr8-xBi2Ca3+xO16] are shifted from each other 1/2 of both a(p) and root 2a(p) along [100](p) and [110](p), respectively. In the double rows, two trivalent bismuth atoms are placed, forming dimeric anion complexes [Bi2O6].(6-).6- The oxygen atoms around bismuth in these dimers are placed in the vertexes of a distorted trigonal bipyramid, with one vacant position that would be occupied by the lone pairs characteristic for the electronic configuration of Bi(III). The B sites in the perovskite blocks are occupied by pentavalent bismuth atoms and calcium atoms; the remaining Sr and Ca ions occupy the A sites of the perovskite blocks with coordination numbers with oxygen ranging from 10 to 12. The mean valence for Bi is +3.67 [33.3% of Bi(V) and 66.7% of Bi(III)]. The oxygen vacancies are located in the boundaries between domains having the two possible configurations of the perovskite subcell as in the anionic superconductor Bi3BaO5.5. The oxidation of Bi6Sr8-xCa3+xO22 at 650 degrees C allows the complete filling of the oxygen vacancies to form the double perovskite (Sr2-xCax)Bi1.4Ca0.6O6 that shows 92.5% of bismuth in +5 oxidation state. The experimental high-resolution electon microscopy image and the electron diffraction pattern of powder samples along the [010]* zone axis are in good agreement with those calculated from the structural model obtained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The material is almost free of defects and the occurrence of planar defects is very exceptional.

Abstract 6H SiC single crystals were implanted al room temperature with 1 MeV He+ up to a fluence of 2 x 10(17) at./cm(2) RBS-channeling analysis with a 2 MeV He+ beam indicated the formation of extended defects or the generation of point defects at a constant concentration over a depth of about 1 mu m. Electron microscopy characterisation revealed the presence of two amorphous buried layers at depths of about 1,75 and 4.8 mu m. They an due to the implantation and to the analysing RES beam, respectively, No extended planar or linear faults were found in the region between the surface and the first amorphous layer. However, at the surface, a 50 nm thick amorphous layer was observed in which crystalline inclusions were embedded. Electron diffraction and HREM data of the inclusions were typical for diamond, These inclusions were even found in the crystalline SiC material below this layer, however at a reduced density.

Title Microstructural characterization of diamond films deposited on c-BN crystals Type A1 Journal article
Year 2000 Publication Diamond and related materials T2 – 10th European Conference on Diamond, Diamond-Like Materials, Nitrides, and Silicon Carbide (Diamond 1999), SEP 12-17, 1999, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC Abbreviated Journal Diam Relat Mater
  Volume 9 Issue 3-6 Pages 269-273
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The morphology and structure of diamond films, deposited on cubic boron nitride (c-BN) crystals by microwave-plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, is studied by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The c-BN crystals, with sizes of 200 to 350 mu m and grown by a high-temperature/high-pressure technique, were embedded in a copper holder, and used as substrates in deposition runs of 15 min to 5 h. The nucleation centers for diamond appear as well-shaped cuboctahedral crystallites, having diameters of approximately 100 nm. With increasing deposition time the diamond crystallites grew larger, forming islands on the c-BN faces. In some cases, epitaxial growth was observed on the (111) c-BN faces where coalesced particles gave rise to very smooth regions. A number of diamond crystals with peculiar shapes are observed, such as a pseudo five-fold symmetry due to multiple twinning. Moreover, both randomly distributed carbon tubes, about 100 nn in diameter and 1 mu m in length, and spherically shaped features are observed in samples prepared under the typical conditions of diamond deposition, this effect being ascribed to the influence of plasma-sputtered copper contamination. Quite unusual diamond crystals with a deep, pyramidal-shaped hole in the middle grew on the copper substrate between the c-BN crystals. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Abstract The exploration of the Mn4+-rich side of the Pr1-xSrxMnO3 system has allowed the extension of the domain of the cubic perovskite, by using a two-step process, combining synthesis under Ar flow at high temperature and O-2 pressure annealing at lower temperature. We show that these Pr-doped cubic perovskites exhibit a coupled structural (cubic-tetragonal) and magnetic (para-antiferro) transition connected with a resistivity jump at the same temperature. The strong interplay between lattice, charges, and spins for these oxides results from the appearance at low temperature of the distorted C-type antiferromagnetic structure. The Pr1-xSrxMnO3 magnetic phase diagram shows, for 0.9 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1 (i.e., on the Mn4+-rich side), the existence at low temperature of C- and G-type antiferromagnetism. The absence of ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic competition explains that magnetoresistante properties are not observed in this system, in contrast to Mn4+-rich Ln(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3) systems.

Abstract The split diffuse maxima around the {110} and {100} positions in the diffraction pattern of short-range-ordered Cu1-xPdx alloys (x=0.10...0.60) are attributed to small atomic clusters, being part of the underlying fee lattice. By analyzing the reciprocal space geometry, our cluster method identifies two prominent cluster types: the tetrahedron of nearest neighbors and a linear three-points cluster along the [110] directions. Since both cluster types contain different information on the same nearest-neighbor correlations, local anisotropy has to be assumed. It is shown that the three interatomic pair interactions within these basic clusters are sufficient to generate the spot splitting in the diffraction pattern. A ground-state analysis with these interactions reproduces the results of the anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor Ising model.

Title Bright to dark exciton transition in symmetric coupled quantum wells Type A1 Journal article
Year 2001 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B

Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract The energy dispersion of an exciton in a coupled quantum well is modified by an external in-plane magnetic field. We find that the in-plane magnetic field can shift the ground state of the magnetoexciton from a zero in-plane center-of-mass (CM) momentum to a finite CM momentum, and render the ground state of the magnetoexciton stable against radiative recombination due to momentum conservation. At the same time, a spatial separation of the electron and hole is realized. Thus an in-plane magnetic field can be used to tailor the radiative properties of excitons in coupled quantum wells.
