Abstract Carbon-based screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) are extensively employed in electrochemistry due to their reproducibility, low-cost production, disposability and versatility. It is commonly accepted that batch to batch variations may occur due to variations in the ink formulation or the use of a different ink to print the electrodes. In this paper, three different commercial carbon-based inks (DuPont, Loctite and SunChemical) were used to manufacture SPEs, referred to respectively as Dup-SPE, Loc-SPE and Sun-SPE, using a semi-automated screen-printing technology. This study focuses on evaluating the quality, characteristics and electrochemical performance of the fabricated SPEs. Furthermore, the study aimed to investigate potential correlations between the ink composition and the nature of different target molecules, as well as their electroanalytical responses. Specifically, phenolic compounds and cocaine cutting agents are tested in alkaline conditions, while benzodiazepines and cephalosporine antibiotics are investigated in acidic media using square wave voltammetry (SWV). This aims to extract insights for the proper selection of inks and SPEs in both conditions. Additionally, a scan rate study of cephalosporine antibiotics using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) is performed confirming the ion-exchange polymer layer on the electrode surface of Loc-SPE, which impact surface and electrochemical properties, leading to drawbacks in alkaline SWV sensing, but strategic benefits in reductive sensing resulting in an enhanced selective detection of specific targets. The insights on ink-specific influences on the surface and electrochemical properties of the SPEs obtained, may be useful for facilitating the electrode selection in diverse electrochemical applications, emphasizing the critical role of ink composition in achieving desired sensing capabilities.

Abstract This paper presents a novel method for the reconstruction of high-resolution temporal images in dynamic tomographic imaging, particularly for discrete objects with smooth boundaries that vary over time. Addressing the challenge of limited measurements per time point, we propose a technique that incorporates spatial and temporal information of the dynamic objects. Our method uses the explicit assumption of homogeneous attenuation values of discrete objects. We achieve this computationally through the application of the level-set method for image segmentation and the representation of motion via a sinusoidal basis. The result is a computationally efficient and easily optimizable variational framework that enables the reconstruction of high-quality 2D or 3D image sequences with a single projection per frame. Compared to variational regularization-based methods using similar image models, our approach demonstrates superior performance on both synthetic and pseudo-dynamic real X-ray tomography datasets. The implications of this research extend to improved visualization and analysis of dynamic processes in tomographic imaging, finding potential applications in diverse scientific and industrial domains. The supporting data and code are provided.

Abstract We analyze, from first -principles calculations, the excitonic properties of monolayer black phosphorus (BP) under strain, as well as of bilayer BP with different stacking registries, as a base platform for the observation and use of hyperbolic polaritons. In the unstrained case, our results confirm the in -plane hyperbolic behavior of polaritons coupled to the ground -state excitons in both mono- and bilayer systems, as observed in recent experiments. With strain, we reveal that the exciton-polariton hyperbolicity in monolayer BP is enhanced (reduced) by compressive (tensile) strain in the zig-zag direction of the crystal. In the bilayer case, different stacking registries are shown to exhibit hyperbolic exciton polaritons with different dispersion, while also peaking at different frequencies. This renders both mechanical stress and stacking registry control as practical tools for tuning physical properties of hyperbolic exciton polaritons in black phosphorus, which facilitates detection and further optoelectronic use of these quasiparticles.

Abstract We detail the magnetic properties of monolayer CrX2 and its Janus counterparts CrXY (X, Y = S, Se, Te, with X not equal Y) using ab initio methods and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert magnetization dynamics, and uncover the pronouncedly strong interplay between their structure symmetry and the magnetic order. The relaxation of nonmagnetic chalcogen atoms, that carry large spin-orbit coupling, changes the energetically preferential magnetic order between in-plane antiferromagnetic and tilted ferromagnetic one. The considered Janus monolayers exhibit sizable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, in some cases above 20% of the isotropic exchange, and critical temperature of the long-range magnetic order in the vicinity or even significantly above the room temperature.

Abstract The illicit drug market has been constantly evolving in the last decades, with a significant rise in counterfeit medicines posing serious public health risks. Benzodiazepines (BZDs) such as alprazolam (generally sold under the brand name Xanax), have particularly become the target of counterfeiting efforts due to their addictive nature and upsurge of unregulated designer BZDs. These counterfeit versions frequently resemble legitimate products but contain harmful adulterants or other potent illicit substances. Few methods have been developed to tackle counterfeit pills, usually limited to accurate and sophisticated laboratory equipment. This study explores the feasibility of combining electrochemical fingerprinting with data analysis to overcome the limitations of traditional methods. First, the electrochemical behavior of selected BZDs is studied, and analytical parameters such as pH are optimized. Then, the electroanalysis of common adulterants and illicit drugs is addressed and integrated into a user-friendly app, including a flowchart system. The proposed electrochemical strategy enables the detection of counterfeit Xanax by identifying the presence or absence of alprazolam. It also allows determination of the alprazolam content within a pill while meeting the fundamental requirements of the end users. This study represents an on-site methodology to address the growing challenges posed by BZDs, easily transferable to counterfeit medicines from other drug groups.

Abstract The recent multi-analytical study carried out on the Van Eyck's Ghent Altarpiece showed the simultaneous presence of several kinds of metal carboxylates in oil-rich glaze layers. This outcome raised the question whether these carboxylates had already formed during the preparation of the oil binder by the artists. In the case of early-stage formation, they may have had an impact on the drying rate of the resulting oil, as well as on its handling properties. This hypothesis was investigated using a model system of in-house-prepared linseed oil containing incremental concentrations (2-5-10 wt.%) of relevant metal carboxylates (i.e. Ca-, Zn-, Cu-, and Pb oleates and stearates). This paper describes the influence of these type of molecules on the drying rate of linseed oil and, to an extent, on its viscosity. The drying time of the linseed oil, to which one or more metal carboxylates were added, was measured with a drying recorder while the viscosity was assessed with a rheometer. When introduced together, some of these metal carboxylates act in synergy to shorten the drying time with respect to the situation when the same metal carboxylates were added separately to linseed oil. Mixtures of Ca- and Zn-oleates proved to have a larger effect than other binary combinations. Addition of two metal oleates (combination of Ca/Zn/Cu/Pb) reduced the drying time even more. On the other hand, specific combinations of three metal stearates and/or oleates also demonstrated a significant synergistic effect towards increasing the viscosity of the binder. Especially combinations of Ca/Zn/Cu and Ca/Zn/Pb stearates and oleates gave rise to the highest level of linseed oil viscosity increase, when compared to the situation in which the same metal carboxylates were added separately.

Abstract Cu is one of the most promising materials as an electrocatalyst for the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) to ammonia, a reaction that can simultaneously remove nitrates from wastewater and produce ammonia, a high-value commodity chemical. However, a rational approach to catalyst design is lacking, limiting efficient catalyst optimization. In this work, we propose a way to synthesize monodisperse, polycrystalline Cu NPs with small variances in size by changing the carbon chain length of the phosphonic acid-based ligand. Cu NPs with 8.3, 10.0, and 11.9 nm diameters are successfully synthesized, and high-resolution electron microscopy and tomography are used to characterize these NPs in depth. By isolating Cu NP size as a parameter, we can unequivocally establish its effect on electrochemical performance for the NO3RR to ammonia under optimal operating conditions for the catalyst (0.1 M KOH electrolyte at -1.25 V vs RHE, as established in the first phase). The smallest Cu NPs (8.3 nm with a TDPA ligand) perform best, achieving Faradaic efficiencies (FEs) of 85.4% and absolute current densities of similar to 250 mA cm(-2), with increasing current densities and constant FEs as the particle size decreases. To allow for a rational approach to Cu-based catalyst design from a stability perspective, this work completed a first study of the main degradation pathway that the Cu NPs undergo during NO3RR. High-resolution electron microscopy and tomography are used to characterize the particles at various stages of the reaction. The NPs undergo agglomeration, pulverization, and particle detachment due to the reaction, starting at a particle size of 8.3 nm and progressively getting smaller, but leveling off, until a NP size of 2.6 nm is reached after 2 h of electrolysis. This decrease in NP size goes paired with a decrease in FE from 83% after the first 15 min to 74% after 2 h at -0.75 V vs RHE, despite the increase in active surface area. These insights into the most prominent degradation mechanisms allow for rational adjustments to future catalysts to combat these changes; for example, by embedding NPs in a tailored support, morphological degradation could be impeded. Therefore, these insights allow for a rational approach to the improvement of the stability of Cu-based catalysts for the NO3RR, a very important but often an overlooked aspect of catalyst design.

Title Tuning the quantum phase transition of an ultrathin magnetic topological insulator Type A1 Journal article

Abstract We explore the effect of thickness, magnetization direction, strain, and gating on the topological quantum phase transition of a thin-film magnetic topological insulator. Reducing the film thickness to the ultrathin regime couples the edge states on the two surfaces, opening a gap known as the hybridization gap, and causing a phase transition from a topological insulator to a normal insulator (NI). An out-of-plane/in-plane magnetization of size proportional to the hybridization gap triggers a phase transition from a normal insulator state to a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH)/semimetal state. A magnetization tilt by angle 0 from the out-of-plane axis influences the topological phase transition in a way that for sufficiently large 0, no phase transition from NI to QAH can be observed regardless of the sample thickness or magnetization, and for 0 close to pi /2 the system transits to a semimetal phase. Furthermore, we demonstrate that compressive/tensile strain can be used to decrease/increase the magnetization threshold for the topological phase transition. Finally, we reveal the effect of a vertical potential acting on the film, be it due to the substrate or applied gating, which breaks inversion symmetry and raises the magnetization threshold for the transition from NI to QAH state.

Abstract Acoustic plasmons in graphene exhibit strong confinement induced by a proximate metal surface and hybridize with phonons of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) when these materials are combined in a van der Waals heterostructure, thus forming screened graphene plasmon-phonon polaritons (SGPPPs), a type of acoustic mode. While SGPPPs are shown to be very sensitive to the dielectric properties of the environment, enhancing the SGPPPs coupling strength in realistic heterostructures is still challenging. Here we employ the quantum electrostatic heterostructure model, which builds upon the density functional theory calculations for monolayers, to show that the use of a metal as a substrate for graphene-TMD heterostructures (i) vigorously enhances the coupling strength between acoustic plasmons and the TMD phonons, and (ii) markedly improves the sensitivity of the plasmon wavelength on the structural details of the host platform in real space, thus allowing one to use the effect of environmental screening on acoustic plasmons to probe the structure and composition of a van der Waals heterostructure down to the monolayer resolution.

Abstract Strain-free GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) grown by droplet etching and nanohole infilling (DENI) are highly promising candidates for the on-demand generation of indistinguishable and entangled photon sources. The spectroscopic fingerprint and quantum optical properties of QDs are significantly influenced by their morphology. The effects of nanohole geometry and infilled material on the exciton binding energies and fine structure splitting are well-understood. However, a comprehensive understanding of GaAs/AlGaAs QD morphology remains elusive. To address this, we employ high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and reverse engineering through selective chemical etching and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Cross-sectional STEM of uncapped QDs reveals an inverted conical nanohole with Al-rich sidewalls and defect-free interfaces. Subsequent selective chemical etching and AFM measurements further reveal asymmetries in element distribution. This study enhances the understanding of DENI QD morphology and provides a fundamental three-dimensional structural model for simulating and optimizing their optoelectronic properties.

Abstract It was recently shown that a chiral topological phase emerges from the coupling of two twisted monolayers of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta for 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 +delta for certain twist angles. In this work, we reveal the behavior of such twisted superconducting bilayers with d x 2 – y 2 pairing symmetry in the presence of an applied magnetic field. Specifically, we show that the emergent vortex matter can serve as a smoking gun for the detection of topological superconductivity in such bilayers. Moreover, we report two distinct skyrmionic states that characterize the chiral topological phase and provide a full account of their experimental signatures and their evolution with the twist angle.

Here we report that growth of planar, vertical and randomly oriented tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanowires can be realized on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates via the epitaxy-assisted vaporliquidsolid (VLS) mechanism, by simply regulating the growth conditions, in particular the growth temperature. This robust control on nanowire orientation is facilitated by the small lattice mismatch of 1.6% between ITO and YSZ. Further control of the orientation, symmetry and shape of the nanowires can be achieved by using YSZ substrates with (110) and (111), in addition to (100) surfaces. Based on these insights, we succeed in growing regular arrays of planar ITO nanowires from patterned catalyst nanoparticles. Overall, our discovery of unprecedented orientation control in ITO nanowires advances the general VLS synthesis, providing a robust epitaxy-based approach toward rational synthesis of nanowires.

Abstract We have studied the temperature and field dependencies of the critical current I(C) in the Nb-Fe(0.1)Si(0.9)-Nb Josephson junction with a tunneling barrier formed by a paramagnetic insulator. We demonstrate that in these junctions coexistence of both the 0 and the pi states within one tunnel junction occurs, and leads to the appearance of a sharp cusp in the temperature dependence I(C)(T), similar to the I(C)(T) cusp found for the 0-pi transition in metallic pi junctions. This cusp is not related to the 0-pi temperature-induced transition itself, but is caused by the different temperature dependencies of the opposing 0 and pi supercurrents through the barrier.

Abstract We present results on model based quantification of electron energy loss spectra (EELS), focusing on the factors that influence accuracy and precision in determining chemical concentrations. Several sources of systematical errors are investigated. The spectrometer entrance aperture determines the collection angle, and the effects of its position with respect to the transmitted beam are investigated, taking into account the diffraction by the crystal structure. The effect of the orientation of the sample is tested experimentally and theoretically on SrTiO3, and finally, a simulated experiment on c-BN at different thicknesses confirms the superior results of the model based method with respect to the conventional method. A test on a set of experimental reference compounds is presented, showing that remarkably good accuracy can be obtained. Recommendations are given to achieve high accuracy and precision in practice. Abstract Energy filtered TEM, EFTEM, provides three-dimensional data, two spatial and one spectral dimension. We propose to acquire these data by measuring a series of images with a defocused energy filter. It will be shown that each image is a projection of the data on the detector and that reconstruction of the data out of a sufficient number of such projections using a tomographic reconstruction algorithm is possible. This technique uses only a fraction of the electron dose an energy filtered series (EFS) needs for the same spectral and spatial resolution and the same mean signal-to-noise ratio. Abstract Annular objective apertures are fabricated for a CM300 transmission electron microscope using a focused ion beam system. A central beam stop in the back focal plane of the objective lens of the microscope blocks all electrons scattered up to a semi-angle of approximately 20 mrad. In this manner, contributions to the image from Bragg scattering are largely reduced and the image contrast is sensitive to the atomic number Z. Experimentally, we find that single atom scattering cross sections measured with this technique are close to Rutherford scattering values. A comparison between this new method and STEM-HAADF shows that both techniques result in qualitatively similar images although the resolution of ADF-TEM is limited by contrast delocalization caused by the spherical aberration of the objective lens. This problem can be overcome by using an aberration corrected microscope.

Abstract Chimera state is a recently discovered dynamical phenomenon in arrays of nonlocally coupled oscillators, that displays a self-organized spatial pattern of coexisting coherence and incoherence. We discuss the appearance of the chimera states in networks of phase oscillators with attractive and with repulsive interactions, i.e. when the coupling respectively favors synchronization or works against it. By systematically analyzing the dependence of the spatiotemporal dynamics on the level of coupling attractivity/repulsivity and the range of coupling, we uncover that different types of chimera states exist in wide domains of the parameter space as cascades of the states with increasing number of intervals of irregularity, so-called chimera's heads. We report three scenarios for the chimera birth: (1) via saddle-node bifurcation on a resonant invariant circle, also known as SNIC or SNIPER, (2) via blue-sky catastrophe, when two periodic orbits, stable and saddle, approach each other creating a saddle-node periodic orbit, and (3) via homoclinic transition with complex multistable dynamics including an “eight-like” limit cycle resulting eventually in a chimera state.

Abstract Metamorphic buffers (M-buffers) consisting of graded InAlAs or bulk InP were employed for the production of InP-based epiwafers on GaAs substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. The graded InAlAs is the standard for production metamorphic high electron mobility transistors (M-HEMTs), while the bulk InP offers superior thermal properties for higher current density circuits. The surface morphology and crystal structure of the two M-buffers showed different relaxation mechanisms. The graded InAlAs gave a cross-hatched pattern with nearly full relaxation and very effective dislocation filtering, while the bulk InP had a uniform isotropic surface with dislocations propagating further up towards the active layers. Both types of M-buffers had atomic force microscopy root-mean-square roughness values around 2030 Å. The Hall transport properties of high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) grown on the InAlAs M-buffer, and a baseline HEMT grown lattice matched on InP, both had room-temperature mobilities >10 000 cm2/V s, while the M-HEMT on the InP M-buffer showed a decrease to 9000 cm2/V  s. Similarly, the dc parameters of a double heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) grown on the InAlAs M-buffer were much closer to the baseline heterojunction bipolar transistor than a DHBT grown on the InP M-buffer. A high breakdown voltage of 11.3 V was achieved on an M-DHBT with the InAlAs M-buffer. We speculate that the degradation in device characteristics on the InP M-buffer was related to the incomplete dislocation filtering.

Abstract Electron energy loss spectra in conjunction with near-edge fine structures of purely stoichiometric niobium monoxide (NbO) and niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) reference materials were recorded. The structures of the niobium oxide reference materials were checked by selected area electron diffraction to ensure a proper assignment of the fine structures. NbO and Nb2O5 show clearly different energy loss near-edge fine structures of the Nb-M-4,M-5 and -M-2,M-3 edges and of the O-K edge, reflecting the specific local environments of the ionized atoms. To distinguish the two oxides in a quantitative manner, the intensities under the Nb-M-4,M-5 as well as Nb-M-2,M-3 edges and the O-K edge were measured and their ratios calculated. k-factors were also derived from these measurements.

Abstract A comprehensive electron energy-loss spectroscopy study of niobium (Nb) and stable Nb-oxide phases (NbO, NbO2, Nb2O5) was carried out. In this work (Part I), the plasmons and energy-loss near-edge structures (ELNES) of all relevant Nb edges (Nb-N2,3, Nb-M4,5, Nb-M2,3, Nb-M1, and Nb-L2,3) up to energy losses of about 2600 eV and the O-K edge are analyzed with respect to achieving characteristic fingerprints of Nb in different formal oxidation states (0 for metallic Nb, +2 for NbO, +4 for NbO2, and +5 for Nb2O5). Chemical shifts of the Nb-N2,3, Nb-M4,5, Nb-M2,3, and Nb-L2,3 edges are extracted from the spectra that amount to about 4 eV as the oxidation state increases from 0 for Nb to +5 for Nb2O5. Four different microscopes, including a 200 keV ZEISS Libra with monochromator, were used. The corresponding wide range of experimental parameters with respect to the primary electron energy, convergence, and collection semi-angles as well as energy resolution allows an assessment of the influence of the experimental setup on the ELNES of the different edges. Finally, the intensity of the Nb-L2,3 white-line edges is correlated with niobium 4d-state occupancy in the different reference materials.

Abstract Hysteretic resistance switching is observed in epitaxial Fe/Cr/MgO/Fe magnetic tunnel junctions under bias voltage cycling between negative and positive values of about 1 V. The junctions switch back and forth between high- and low-resistance states, both of which depend on the device bias history. A linear dependence is found between the magnitude of the tunnel magnetoresistance and the crafted resistance of the junctions. Abstract An epitaxially grown heterostructure consisting of alternating layers of LaMnO3 (8 unit cells) and SrMnO3 (4 unit cells) on a SrTiO3 substrate has been studied by a combination of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) on an atomic scale. Excitation edges of all elements are captured with subnanometer spatial accuracy, and parametrized to obtain chemical profiles. The fine-edge structure of O K and Mn L-2,L-3 edges are interpreted as signatures of the local electronic structure and show a spatial modulation of the concentration of holes with O 2p character. The chemical concentration is found to be different for the bottom and top interface of a SrMnO3 layer. HRTEM complements the EELS results and confirms the asymmetry of the interfaces. Abstract The measurement of the electronic structure of anisotropic materials using energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) spectroscopy is an important field of microanalysis in transmission electron microscopy. We present a novel method to study the angular dependence of electron inelastic scattering in anisotropic materials. This method has been applied to the study of 1s -> pi* and sigma* transitions on the carbon K edge in pyrolitic graphite. An excellent agreement between experimental and theoretical two-dimensional scattering patterns has been found. In particular, the need of a fully relativistic calculation of the inelastic scattering cross-section to explain the experimental results is demonstrated. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract Electron energy loss spectroscopy was used to investigate the bonding of plasma deposited carbon films. The experimental conditions include the use of a specific collection angle for which the shape of the spectra is free of the orientation dependency usually encountered in graphite due to its anisotropic structure. The first quantification process of the energy loss near-edge structure was performed by a standard fit of the collected spectrum, corrected for background and multiple scattering, with three Gaussian functions followed by a comparison with the graphite spectrum obtained under equivalent experimental conditions. In a second approach a fitting model directly incorporating the background subtraction and multiple scattering removal was applied. The final numerical results are interpreted in view of the deposition conditions of the films and the actual fitting procedure with the related choice of parameters.

Abstract From the theory of many-electron states in atoms, we know that there exists a strong Coulomb repulsion, which results in the electronic term structure of atoms and is responsible for Hunds rules. By expanding the Coulomb on-site repulsion into a multipolar series, we derive this interaction and show that it is also present in solids as a correlation effect, which means that the interaction requires a multideterminant version of the Hartree-Fock method. Of particular interest is the case where this interaction couples states of localized ( f) and delocalized ( s) electrons. We show that the interaction is bilinear in the creation/annihilation operators for localized electrons and bilinear in the operators for conduction electrons. To study the coupling, we consider a simple model in the framework of an effective limited configuration interaction method with one localized f-electron and one itinerant s-electron per crystal site. The on-site multipole interaction between the f- and s-electrons is explicitly taken into account. It is shown that depending on the low-lying excitation spectrum imposed by the crystal electric field, the model can lead not only to ferromagnetism but also to a nonmagnetic state. The model is relevant for solids with localized and itinerant electron states.
