Abstract | Coupled electron-hole states are realized in a system consisting of a combination of an electrostatic potential barrier and ring-shaped potential well, which resembles a circular dipole. A perpendicular magnetic field induces confined states inside the Landau gaps which are mainly located at the barrier or ring. Hybridizations between the barrier and ring states are seen as anticrossings in the energy spectrum. As a consequence, the energy levels show an oscillating dependence on the electrostatic potential strength in combination with an oscillating migration of the wave functions between the barrier and ring. At the anticrossing points the quantum state consists of a mixture of electron and hole. The present system mimics closely the behavior of a relativistic dipole on gapped graphene.

Abstract | We study the influence of confinement on the atomic collapse due to a Coulomb impurity placed at the center of a graphene quantum dot of radius R. We apply the zigzag or infinite-mass boundary condition and consider both a point-size and a finite-size impurity. As a function of the impurity strength Za, the energy spectra are discrete. In the case of the zigzag boundary condition, the degenerate (with respect to the angular momentum m) zero-energy levels are pulled down in energy as Z alpha increases, and they remain below epsilon = – Z alpha. Our results show that the energy levels exhibit a 1/R dependence in the subcritical regime [Z alpha < |km + 1/2|, k = 1 (-1) for the K (K') valley]. In the supercritical regime (Z alpha > |km + 1/2|) we find a qualitatively very different behavior where the levels decrease as a function of R in a nonmonotonic manner. While the valley symmetry is preserved in the presence of the impurity, we find that the impurity breaks electron-hole symmetry. We further study the energy spectrum of zigzag quantum dots in gapped graphene. Our results show that as the gap increases, the lowest electron states are pushed into the gap by the impurity.

Abstract | The spectrum of a Coulomb impurity in bilayer graphene is investigated as function of the strength of a perpendicular magnetic field for different values of the angular quantum number m and for different values of the gate voltage. We point out fundamental differences between the results from the two-band and four-band model. The supercritical instability and fall-to-center phenomena are investigated in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that in the four-band model the fall-to-center phenomenon occurs as in monolayer graphene, while this is not the case in the two-band model. We find that in a magnetic field the supercritical instability manifests itself as a series of anticrossings in the hole part of the spectrum for states coming from the low-energy band. However, we also find very distinct anticrossings in the electron part of the spectrum that continue into the hole part, which are related to the higher energy band of the four-band model. At these anticrossings, we find a very sharp peak in the probability density close to the impurity, reminiscent for the fall-to-center phenomenon. In this paper, these peculiar and interesting effects are studied for different magnetic field, interlayer coupling, and bias potential strengths.

Abstract | In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 89, 155403 (2014)], the authors investigated the spectrum of a Coulomb impurity in graphene in the presence of magnetic and electric fields using the coupled series expansion approach. In the first part of their paper, they investigated how Coulomb impurity states collapse in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We argue that the obtained spectrum does not give information about the atomic collapse and that their interpretation of the spectrum regarding atomic collapse is not correct. We also argue that the obtained results are only valid up to the dimensionless charge vertical bar alpha vertical bar = 0.5 and, to obtain correct results for alpha > 0.5, a proper regularization of the Coulomb interaction is required. Here we present the correct numerical results for the spectrum for arbitrary values of alpha.

Abstract | We investigate the energy spectrum, wave functions, and local density of states of an electrical dipole placed on a sheet of gapped graphene as function of the charge strength Z alpha for different sizes of the dipole and for different regularization parameters. The dipole is modeled as consisting of a positive and negative charge. Bound states are found within the gap region with some energy levels that anticross and others that cross as function of the impurity strength Z alpha. The anticrossings are more pronounced and move to higher charges Z alpha when the length of the dipole decreases. These energy levels turn into atomic collapse states when they enter the positive (or negative) energy continuum. A smooth transition from the single-impurity behavior to the dipole one is observed: The states diving towards the continuum in the single-impurity case are gradually replaced by a series of anticrossings that represent a continuation of the diving states in the single-impurity case. By studying the local density of states at the edge of the dipole we show how the series of anticrossings persist in the positive and negative continuum.

Abstract | Systems which rapidly evolve through symmetry-breaking transitions on timescales comparable to the fluctuation timescale of the single-particle excitations may behave very differently than under controlled near-ergodic conditions. A real-time investigation with high temporal resolution may reveal insights into the ordering through the transition that are not available in static experiments. We present an investigation of the system trajectory through a normal-to-superconductor transition in a prototype high-temperature superconducting cuprate in which such a situation occurs. Using a multiple pulse femtosecond spectroscopy technique we measure the system trajectory and time evolution of the single-particle excitations through the transition in La1.9Sr0.1CuO4 and compare the data to a simulation based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, using the laser excitation fluence as an adjustable parameter controlling the quench conditions in both experiment and theory. The comparison reveals the presence of significant superconducting fluctuations which precede the transition on short timescales. By including superconducting fluctuations as a seed for the growth of the superconducting order we can obtain a satisfactory agreement of the theory with the experiment. Remarkably, the pseudogap excitations apparently play no role in this process.

Abstract | Reducing the size of a superconductor below its characteristic length scales can either enhance or suppress its critical temperature (T-c). Depending on the bulk value of the electron-phonon coupling strength, electronic and phonon confinement effects will play different roles in the modification of T-c. Experimentally disentangling each contribution has remained a challenge. We have measured both the phonon density of states and T-c of Sn nanowires with diameters of 18, 35, and 100 nm in order to quantify the effects of phonon confinement on superconductivity. We observe a shift of the phonon frequency towards the low-energy region and an increase in the electron-phonon coupling constant that can account for the measured increase in T-c.

Abstract | By making use of circularly polarized light and electrostatic gating, monolayer molybdenum disulfide (ML – MoS2) can form a platform supporting multiple types of charge carriers. They can be discriminated by their spin, valley index, or whether they are electrons or holes. We investigate the collective properties of those charge carriers and are able to identify distinct plasmon modes. We analyze the corresponding dispersion relation, lifetime, and oscillator strength, and calculate the phase relation between the oscillations in the different components of the plasmon modes. All platforms in ML-MoS2 support a long-wavelength root q plasmon branch at zero kelvins. In addition to this, for an n-component system, n-1 distinct plasmon modes appear as acoustic modes with linear dispersion in the long-wavelength limit. These modes correspond to out-of-phase oscillations in the different fermion liquids and have, although being damped, a relatively long lifetime. Additionally, we also find distinct modes at large wave vectors that are more strongly damped by intraband processes.

Abstract | We investigate the effect of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the optoelectronic properties of n- and p-type monolayer MoS2. The optical conductivity is calculated within the Kubo formalism. We find that the spin-flip transitions enabled by the Rashba SOC result in a wide absorption window in the optical spectrum. Furthermore, we evaluate the effects of the polarization direction of the radiation, temperature, carrier density, and the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit parameter on the optical conductivity. We find that the position, width, and shape of the absorption peak or absorption window can be tuned by varying these parameters. This study shows that monolayer MoS2 can be a promising tunable optical and optoelectronic material that is active in the infrared to terahertz spectral range.

Abstract | In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 89, 125418 (2014)], the authors argue that it is possible to map the electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene to those of bilayer graphene in an in-plane magnetic field. However, their description of the low-energy dynamics of twisted bilayer graphene is restricted to the extended zone scheme and therefore neglects the effects of the superperiodic structure. If the energy spectrum is studied in the supercell Brillouin zone, we find that the comparison with an in-plane magnetic field fails because (i) the energy spectra of the two situations exhibit different symmetries and (ii) the low-energy spectra are very different.

Abstract | Layered structures of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) belong to a new class of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor materials in which monolayers exhibit a direct band gap in their electronic spectrum. This band gap has recently been shown to vanish due to the presence of metallic edge modes when MoS2 monolayers are terminated by zigzag edges on both sides. Here, we demonstrate that a zigzag nanoribbon of MoS2, when exposed to an external exchange field in combination with a transverse electric field, has the potential to exhibit a peculiar half-metallic nature and thereby allows electrons of only one spin direction to move. The peculiarity of such spin-selective conductors originates from a spin switch near the gap-closing region, so the allowed spin orientation can be controlled by means of an external gate voltage. It is shown that the induced half-metallic phase is resistant to random fluctuations of the exchange field as well as the presence of edge vacancies.

Abstract | We develop a theory of the upper critical field in a BCS superconductor with a nonlocal interaction between electrons. We have shown that the nonlocal interaction is characterized by the parameter k(F)rho(0), where k(F) is the Fermi momentum and rho(0) is the radius of electron-electron interaction. The presence of the external magnetic field leads to the generation of additional components of the order parameter with different angular momenta. This effect leads to the enhancement of the upper critical field above the orbital limiting field. In addition the upward curvature in the temperature dependence of H-c2 (T) in the clean limit is predicted. The impurity scattering suppresses the effect in the dirty limit.

Abstract | The electronic structure and transport properties of monolayer MoS2 are studied using a tight-binding approach coupled with the nonequilibrium Green's function method. A zigzag nanoribbon of MoS2 is conducting due to the intersection of the edge states with the Fermi level that is located within the bulk gap. We show that applying a transverse electric field results in the disappearance of this intersection and turns the material into a semiconductor. By increasing the electric field the band gap undergoes a two stage linear increase after which it decreases and ultimately closes. It is shown that in the presence of a uniform exchange field, this electric field tuning of the gap can be exploited to open low energy domains where only one of the spin states contributes to the electronic conductance. This introduces possibilities in designing spin filters for spintronic applications.

Abstract | We investigate the anisotropic hybrid surface optical (SO) phonon-plasmon dispersion relations in monolayer and double-layer phosphorene systems located on the polar substrates, such as SiO2, h-BN, and Al2O3. We calculate these hybrid modes by using the dynamical dielectric function in the random phase approximation in which the electron-electron interaction and long-range electric field generated by the substrate SO phonons via Frohlich interaction are taken into account. In the long-wavelength limit, we obtain some analytical expressions for the hybrid SO phonon-plasmon dispersion relations which agree with those obtained from the loss function. Our results indicate a strong anisotropy in SO phonon-plasmon modes, which are stronger along the light-mass direction in our heterostructures. Furthermore, we find that the type of substrate has a significant effect on the dispersion relations of the coupled modes. Importantly, the hybrid excitations are apparently sensitive to the misalignment and separation between layers in double-layer phosphorene.

Abstract | Artificial molecular states of double quantum dots defined in bilayer graphene are studied with the atomistic tight-binding method and its low-energy continuum approximation. We indicate that the extended electron wave functions have opposite parities on sublattices of the layers and that the ground-state wave-function components change from bonding to antibonding with the interdot distance. In the weak-coupling limit, the one most relevant for quantum dots defined electrostatically, the signatures of the interdot coupling include, for the two-electron ground state, formation of states with symmetric or antisymmetric spatial wave functions split by the exchange energy. In the high-energy part of the spectrum the states with both electrons in the same dot are found with the splitting of energy levels corresponding to simultaneous tunneling of the electron pair from one dot to the other.

Abstract | within the Kubo formalism. We show that the anisotropic Rashba effect caused by an external field significantly changes the magnitude of the spin splitting. Furthermore, we obtain an analytical expression for the longitudinal optical conductivity associated with interband transitions as a function of the frequency for arbitrary polarization angle. We find that the diagonal components of the optical conductivity tensor are direction dependent and the optical absorption spectrum exhibits a strongly anisotropic absorption window. The height and width of this absorption window are very sensitive to the anisotropy of the system. While the height of absorption peak increases with increasing effective mass anisotropy ratio, the peak intensity is larger when the light polarization is along the armchair direction. Moreover, the absorption peak width becomes broader as the density-of-states mass or Rashba interaction is enhanced. These features in the optical absorption spectrum can be used to determine parameters relevant for spintronics.

Abstract | We propose a tight-binding (TB) model, that includes spin-orbit coupling (SOC), to describe the electronic properties of methyl-substituted germanane (GeCH3). This model gives an electronic spectrum in agreement with first principle results close to the Fermi level. Using the Z(2) formalism, we show that a topological phase transition from a normal insulator (NI) to a quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase occurs at 11.6% biaxial tensile strain. The sensitivity of the electronic properties of this system on strain, in particular its transition to the topological insulating phase, makes it very attractive for applications in strain sensors and other microelectronic applications.

Abstract | The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is studied on the surface of a 3D magnetic topological insulator. By applying a modified semiclassical framework, all three contributions to the AHE, the Berry curvature effect, the side jump effect and the skew scattering effects are systematically treated, and analytical expressions for the conductivities are obtained in terms of the Fermi level, the spatial orientation of the surface magnetization and the concentration of magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities. We demonstrate that the AHE can change sign by altering the orientation of the surface magnetization, the concentration of the impurities and also the position of the Fermi level, in agreement with recent experimental observations. We show how each contribution to the AHE, or even the whole AHE, can be turned off by properly adjusting the given parameters. For example, one can turn off the anomalous hall conductivity in a system with in-plane magnetization by pushing the system into the fully metallic regime.

Abstract | The electronic and transport properties of a three-dimensional (3D) Dirac system are investigated theoretically, which is motivated by recent experimental measurements on quantum and transport mobilities in the 3D Dirac semimetal Na3Bi by J. Xiong et al. [Science 350, 413 (2015); Europhys. Lett. 114, 27002 (2016)]. The electron Hamiltonian is taken from a simplified k center dot p approach. From the obtained electronic band structure and the Fermi energy, we explain why the anomalous effect induced by the chiral anomaly and the Berry curvature in the energy band can be observed experimentally in magnetotransport coefficients in both low-and high-density samples. Moreover, the quantum and transport mobilities are calculated on the basis of the momentum-balance equation derived from a semiclassical Boltzmann equation with the electron-impurity interaction. The quantum and transport mobilities obtained from this study agree both qualitatively and quantitatively with those measured experimentally. We also examine the electron mobilities along different crystal directions in Na3Bi and find them largely anisotropic. The theoretical findings from this work can be helpful in gaining an in-depth understanding of the experimental results and of the basic electronic and transport properties of newly developed 3D Dirac systems.

Abstract | In the Comment, the authors state that the separation of the relative and center of mass variables in our work is not correct. Here we point out that there is a typographical error, i.e., qi instead of -e, in two of our equations which, when corrected, makes the Comment redundant. Within the ansatzes mentioned in our paper all our results are correct, in contrast to the claims of the Comment.

Title | Tuning the electronic properties of graphene-graphitic carbon nitride heterostructures and heterojunctions by using an electric field | Type | A1 Journal article

Abstract | Integration of graphene-based two-dimensional materials is essential for nanoelectronics applications. Using density-functional theory, we systematically investigate the electronic properties of vertically stacked graphene-graphitic carbon nitrides (GE/GCN). We also studied the covalently lateral stitched graphene-graphitic carbon nitrides (GE-GCN heterojunctions). The effects of perpendicular electric field on the electronic properties of six different heterostructures, i.e., (i) one layer of GE on top of a layer of CnNm with (n, m) = (3,1), (3,4), and (4,3) and (ii) three heterostructures CnNm/Cn'Nm', where (n, m) not equal (n', m') are elucidated. The most important calculated features are (i) the systems GE/C3N4, C3N/C3N4, GE-C3N, GE-C4N3, and C3N-C3N4 exhibit semiconducting characteristics having small band gaps of Delta(0)=20, 250, 100, 100, 80 meV, respectively while (ii) the systems GE/C4N3, C3N/C4N3, and C3N-C4N3 show ferromagnetic-metallic properties. In particular, we found that, in semiconducting heterostructures, the band gap increases nontrivially with increasing the absolute value of the applied perpendicular electric field. This work is useful for designing heterojunctions and heterostructures made of graphene and other two-dimensional materials such as those proposed in recent experiments [X. Liu and M. C. Hersam Sci. Adv. 5, 6444 (2019)].

Abstract | Using first-principle calculations, we systematically study strain tuning of the electronic properties of two- dimensional graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets with empirical formula CnNm. We found the following: (i) the ferromagnetic ordered state in the metal-free systems (n, m) = (4,3), (10,9), and (14,12) remains stable in the presence of strain of about 6%. However, the system (9,7) loses its ferromagnetic ordering when increasing strain. This is due to the presence of topological defects in the (9,7) system, which eliminates the asymmetry between spin up and spin down of the p(z) orbitals when strain is applied. (ii) By applying uniaxial strain, a band gap opens in systems which are initially gapless. (iii) In semiconducting systems which have an initial gap of about 1 eV, the band gap is closed with applying uniaxial strain.

Abstract | The role of dielectric screening of electron-hole interaction in van der Waals heterostructures is theoretically investigated. A comparison between models available in the literature for describing these interactions is made and the limitations of these approaches are discussed. A simple numerical solution of Poisson's equation for a stack of dielectric slabs based on a transfer matrix method is developed, enabling the calculation of the electron-hole interaction potential at very low computational cost and with reasonable accuracy. Using different potential models, direct and indirect exciton binding energies in these systems are calculated within Wannier-Mott theory, and a comparison of theoretical results with recent experiments on excitons in two-dimensional materials is discussed.

Abstract | We discuss positron-annihilation lifetimes for a set of illustrative bulk materials within the framework of the weighted-density approximation (WDA). The WDA can correctly describe electron-positron correlations in strongly inhomogeneous systems, such as surfaces, where the applicability of (semi-)local approximations is limited. We analyze the WDA in detail and show that the electrons which cannot screen external charges efficiently, such as the core electrons, cannot be treated accurately via the pair correlation of the homogeneous electron gas. We discuss how this problem can be addressed by reducing the screening in the homogeneous electron gas by adding terms depending on the gradient of the electron density. Further improvements are obtained when core electrons are treated within the LDA and the valence electron using the WDA. Finally, we discuss a semiempirical WDA-based approach in which a sum rule is imposed to reproduce the experimental lifetimes.

Abstract | The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is a chiral interaction that favors formation of domain walls. Recent experiments and ab initio calculations show that there are multiple ways to modify the strength of the interfacially induced DMI in thin ferromagnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In this paper we reveal theoretically the effects of spatially varied DMI on the magnetic state in thin films. In such heterochiral 2D structures we report several emergent phenomena, ranging from the equilibrium spin canting at the interface between regions with different DMI, over particularly strong confinement of domain walls and skyrmions within high-DMI tracks, to advanced applications such as domain tailoring nearly at will, design of magnonic waveguides, and much improved skyrmion racetrack memory.

Abstract | We present a microscopic study of superconductivity in OsB2 , and discuss the origin and characteristic length scales of the superconducting state. From first-principles we show that OsB2 is characterized by three different Fermi sheets, and we prove that this fermiology complies with recent quantum-oscillation experiments. Using the found microscopic properties, and experimental data from the literature, we employ Ginzburg-Landau relations to reveal that OsB2 is a distinctly type-I superconductor with a very low Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ—a rare property among compound materials. We show that the found coherence length and penetration depth corroborate the measured thermodynamic critical field. Moreover, our calculation of the superconducting gap structure using anisotropic Eliashberg theory and ab initio calculated electron-phonon interaction as input reveals a single but anisotropic gap. The calculated gap spectrum is shown to give an excellent account for the unconventional behavior of the superfluid density of OsB2 measured in experiments as a function of temperature. This reveals that gap anisotropy can explain such behavior, observed in several compounds, which was previously attributed solely to a two-gap nature of superconductivity. |

Abstract | After the discovery of magnetism in monolayer CrI3, the magnetic properties of different 2D materials from the chromium-trihalide family are intuitively assumed to be similar, yielding magnetic anisotropy from the spin-orbit coupling on halide ligands. Here we reveal significant differences between the CrI3 and CrBr3 magnetic monolayers in their magnetic anisotropy, resulting Curie temperature, hysteresis in external magnetic field, and evolution of magnetism with strain, all predominantly attributed to distinctly different interplay of atomic contributions to spin-orbit coupling in two materials.

Abstract | We demonstrate that combining standing wave (SW) excitation with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) can lead to depth resolution and interface sensitivity for studying orbital and magnetic excitations in correlated oxide heterostructures. SW-RIXS has been applied to multilayer heterostructures consisting of a superconductor La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 (LSCO) and a half-metallic ferromagnet La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO). Easily observable SW effects on the RIXS excitations were found in these LSCO/LSMO multilayers. In addition, we observe different depth distribution of the RIXS excitations. The magnetic excitations are found to arise from the LSCO/LSMO interfaces, and there is also a suggestion that one of the dd excitations comes from the interfaces. SW-RIXS measurements of correlated-oxide and other multilayer heterostructures should provide unique layer-resolved insights concerning their orbital and magnetic excitations, as well as a challenge for RIXS theory to specifically deal with interface effects.

Abstract | We present a detailed theoretical study of the electronic and transport properties of monolayer black phosphorus (BP). This study is motivated by recent experimental activities in investigating n-type few-layer BP systems. The electron density of states, the screening length, and the low-temperature electron mobility are calculated for monolayer BP (MLBP). In particular, the electron transport mobilities along the armchair and zigzag directions are examined on the basis of the momentum-balance equation derived from a semiclassical Boltzmann equation. The anisotropic electron mobilities in MLBP along different directions are demonstrated where the electron-impurity scattering is considered. Furthermore, we compare the results obtained from two electronic band structures of MLBP and find that the simplified model can describe quite rightly the electronic and transport properties of MLBP. This study is relevant to the application of few-layer BP based electronic systems as advanced electronic devices.
