  Abstract Single-file diffusion (SFD) of an infinite one-dimensional chain of interacting particles has a long-time mean-square displacement ∝t1/2, independent of the type of interparticle repulsive interaction. This behavior is also observed in finite-size chains, although only for certain intervals of time t depending on the chain length L, followed by the ∝t for t→∞, as we demonstrate for a closed circular chain of diffusing interacting particles. Here, we show that spatial correlation of noise slows down SFD and can result, depending on the amount of correlated noise, in either subdiffusive behavior ∝tα, where 0<α<1/2, or even in a total suppression of diffusion (in the limit N→∞). Spatial correlation can explain the subdiffusive behavior in recent SFD experiments in circular channels.

  Abstract The electronic structure of the conduction and valence bands of a quantum ring containing a layer inside the ring opening is modeled This structure (nanocup) consists of a GaAs nanodisk (the cup s bottom) and a GaAs nanoring (the cup s rim) which encircles the disk The whole system is embedded in an (Al Ga)As matrix and its shape resembles realistic ring structures grown by the droplet epitaxy technique The conduction-band states in the structure are modeled by the single-band effective-mass theory while the 4-band Luttinger-Kohn model is adopted to compute the valence-band states We analyze how the electronic structure of the nanocup evolves from the one of a quantum ring when the size of either the nanodisk or the nanoring is changed For that purpose (1) the width of the ring (2) the disk radius and (3) the disk height are separately varied For dimensions typical for experimentally realized structures we find that the electron wavefunctions are mainly localized inside the ring even when the thickness of the Inner layer is 90% of the ring thickness These calculations indicate that topological phenomena like the excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect are negligibly affected by the presence of the layer inside the ring (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved

  Abstract Because of strong flux confinement in mesoscopic superconductors, a giant vortex may appear in the ground state of the system in an applied magnetic field. This multiquanta vortex can then split into individual vortices (and vice versa) as a function of, e.g., applied current, magnetic field, or temperature. Here we show that such transitions can be identified by calorimetry, as the formation or splitting of a giant vortex results in a clear jump in measured heat capacity versus external drive. We attribute this phenomenon to an abrupt change in the density of states of the quasiparticle excitations in the vortex core(s), and further link it to a sharp change of the magnetic susceptibility at the transitionproving that the formation of a giant vortex can also be detected by magnetometry.

  Abstract Electrochemistry offers highly flexible routes to fabrication of a wide variety of mesostructures, including three-dimensional (3D) crystallites, thin films and nanowires. Using this method we have grown various 3D superconducting Pb mesostructures with vastly different morphologies. We present here results on a truncated(half)-icosahedron with a hexagonal base and a tripod structure with a triangular base. Using Hall probe magnetometry we have obtained magnetisation curves for these structures at several temperatures and see evidence of geometry-driven flux entry and exit as well as flux trapping caused by specific sample geometries. We also observe behaviour that we interpret in terms of the formation of giant vortices, bearing in mind that bulk Pb is a type-I superconducting material.

  Abstract Thermal fluctuations of the order parameter in an ultrathin triangular-shaped superconducting structure are studied near Tc, in zero applied field. We find that the order parameter is prone to much larger fluctuations in the corners of the structure as compared to its interior. This geometry-induced localization of thermal fluctuations is attributed to the fact that condensate confinement in the corners is characterized by a lower effective dimensionality, which favors stronger fluctuations.

  Abstract Superconductors, ideally diamagnetic when in the Meissner state, can also exhibit paramagnetic behavior due to trapped magnetic flux. In the absence of pinning such paramagnetic response is weak, and ceases with increasing sample thickness. Here we show that in multiband superconductors paramagnetic response can be observed even in slab geometries, and can be far larger than any previous estimate – even multiply larger than the diamagnetic Meissner response for the same applied magnetic field. We link the appearance of this giant paramagnetic response to the broad crossover between conventional Type-I and Type-II superconductors, where Abrikosov vortices interact non-monotonically and multibody effects become important, causing unique flux configurations and their locking in the presence of surfaces.

  Abstract Atomically thin crystals have recently been the focus of attention, in particular, after the synthesis of graphene, a monolayer hexagonal crystal structure of carbon. In this novel material class, the chemically derived graphenes have attracted tremendous interest. It was shown that, although bulk graphite is a chemically inert material, the surface of single layer graphene is rather reactive against individual atoms. So far, synthesis of several graphene derivatives have been reported such as hydrogenated graphene graphane' (CH), fluorographene (CF), and chlorographene (CCl). Moreover, the stability of bromine and iodine covered graphene were predicted using computational tools. Among these derivatives, easy synthesis, insulating electronic behavior and reversibly tunable crystal structure of graphane make this material special for future ultra-thin device applications. This overview surveys structural, electronic, magnetic, vibrational, and mechanical properties of graphane. We also present a detailed overview of research efforts devoted to the computational modeling of graphane and its derivatives. Furthermore recent progress in synthesis techniques and possible applications of graphane are reviewed as well.   Abstract In order to account explicitly for the existence of long-periodic layered structures and the strong structural relaxations in the most common binary and ternary alloys of the Bi-Sb-Te-Se system, we have developed a one-dimensional cluster expansion (CE) based on first-principles electronic structure calculations, which accounts for the Bi and Sb bilayer formation. Excellent interlayer distances are obtained with a van der Waals density functional. It is shown that a CE solely based on pair interactions is sufficient to provide an accurate description of the ground-state energies of Bi-Sb-Te-Se binary and ternary systems without making the data set of ab initio calculated structures unreasonably large. For the binary alloys A1−xQx (A=Sb, Bi; Q=Te, Se), a ternary CE yields an almost continuous series of (meta)stable structures consisting of consecutive A bilayers next to consecutive A2Q3 for 0<x<0.6. For x>0.6, the binary alloy segregates into pure Q and A2Q3. The Bi-Sb system is described by a quaternary CE and is found to be an ideal solid solution stabilized by entropic effects at T≠0 K but with an ordered structure of alternating Bi and Sb layers for x=0.5 at T=0 K. A quintuple CE is used for the ternary Bi-Sb-Te system, where stable ternary layered compounds with an arbitrary stacking of Sb2Te3, Bi2Te3, and Te-Bi-Te-Sb-Te quintuple units are found, optionally separated by mixed Bi/Sb bilayers. Electronic properties of the stable compounds were studied taking spin-orbit coupling into account.

In particular, the change of the hydride formation enthalpy and of the equilibrium pressure for the metal/hydride transformation are described as a function of nanoparticles radius, shell thickness, and elastic properties of both core and shell. To test the model, the hydrogen sorption isotherms of Mg-MgO core-shell nanoparticles, synthesized by inert gas condensation, were measured by means of optical hydrogenography. The model's predictions are in good agreement with the experimentally determined plateau pressure of hydrogen absorption. The features that a core-shell systems should exhibit in view of practical hydrogen storage applications are discussed with reference to the model and the experimental results.   Abstract The origin of the incommensurability in the crystallographic shear (CS) structure of the ferri-Manganite (Sr0.61Pb0.18)(Fe0.75Mn0.25)O2.29, related to the cation deficient perovskite, has been determined by careful analysis of the boundaries between the two variants constituting the phasoid. High Resolution Electron Microscopy/HAADF-STEM images allow the structural mechanisms to be understood through the presence of structural units common to both phases, responsible of the incommensurate character observed in the electron diffraction patterns. The structural analysis allows for identifying different types of CS phases in the Pb−Sr−Fe(Mn)−O diagram and shows that the stabilization of the six-sided tunnels requires a higher A/B cationic ratio. A description of these phases is proposed through simple structural building units (SBU), based on chains of octahedra bordered by two pyramids. The (Sr0.61Pb0.18)(Fe0.75Mn0.25)O2.29 CS compound exhibits a strong antiferromagnetic and insulating behavior, similar to the Fe-2201 and terrace ferrites but differs by the presence of a hysteresis, with a small coercive field.

  Abstract Two concentric two-dimensional GaAs/(Al,Ga)As nanorings in a normal magnetic field are theoretically studied. The single-band effective mass approximation is adopted for both the electron and the hole states, and the analytical solutions are given. We find that the electronic single particle states are arranged in pairs, which exhibit anticrossings and the orbital momentum transitions in the energy spectrum when magnetic field increases. Their period is essentially determined by the radius of the outer ring. The oscillator strength for interband transitions is strongly reduced close to each anticrossing. We show that an optical excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect may occur in concentric nanorings.

  Abstract We report on the crystal structure of the quantum magnet CuClLaNb2O7 that was controversially described with respect to its structural organization and magnetic behavior. Using high-resolution synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and band-structure calculations, we solve the room-temperature structure of this compound -CuClLaNb2O7 and find two high-temperature polymorphs. The -CuClLaNb2O7 phase, stable above 640 K, is tetragonal with asub=3.889 Å, csub =11.738 Å, and the space group P4/mmm. In the -CuClLaNb2O7 structure, the Cu and Cl atoms are randomly displaced from the special positions along the 100 directions. The phase asub2asubcsub, space group Pbmm and the phase 2asub2asubcsub, space group Pbam are stable between 640 K and 500 K and below 500 K, respectively. The structural changes at 500 and 640 K are identified as order-disorder phase transitions. The displacement of the Cl atoms is frozen upon the → transformation while a cooperative tilting of the NbO6 octahedra in the phase further eliminates the disorder of the Cu atoms. The low-temperature -CuClLaNb2O7 structure thus combines the two types of the atomic displacements that interfere due to the bonding between the Cu atoms and the apical oxygens of the NbO6 octahedra. The precise structural information resolves the controversy between the previous computation-based models and provides the long-sought input for understanding CuClLaNb2O7 and related compounds with unusual magnetic properties.

  Abstract We have investigated different nonidealities in Cu2ZnSnSe4CdSZnO solar cells with 9.7% conversion efficiency, in order to determine what is limiting the efficiency of these devices. Several nonidealities could be observed. A barrier of about 300 meV is present for electron flow at the absorberbuffer heterojunction leading to a strong crossover behavior between dark and illuminated currentvoltage curves. In addition, a barrier of about 130 meV is present at the Moabsorber contact, which could be reduced to 15 meV by inclusion of a TiN interlayer. Admittance spectroscopy results on the devices with the TiN backside contact show a defect level with an activation energy of 170 meV. Using all parameters extracted by the different characterization methods for simulations of the two-diode model including injection and recombination currents, we come to the conclusion that our devices are limited by the large recombination current in the depletion region. Potential fluctuations are present in the devices as well, but they do not seem to have a special degrading effect on the devices, besides a probable reduction in minority carrier lifetime through enhanced recombination through the band tail defects.

  Abstract We show in the case of a superconducting Nb ladder that a mesoscopic superconductor typically exhibits magnetoresistance oscillations whose amplitude and temperature dependence are different from those stemming from the Little-Parks effect. We demonstrate that these large resistance oscillations (as well as the monotonic background on which they are superimposed) are due to current-excited moving vortices, where the applied current in competition with the oscillating Meissner currents imposes or removes the barriers for vortex motion in an increasing magnetic field. Because of the ever present current in transport measurements, this effect should be considered in parallel with the Little-Parks effect in low-critical temperature (T-c) samples, as well as with recently proposed thermal activation of dissipative vortex-antivortex pairs in high-T-c samples.

  Abstract With large thin superconducting films in a perpendicular magnetic field, the usual definition and calculation of the magnetization M via currents or as the difference of two fields fail, since the spatially averaged magnetic field in the film coincides with the uniform applied field and the demagnetization factor is unity. The definition of M as field-derivative of the free energy, however, still works in this limit. We generalize the virial theorem, previously derived for infinite bulk superconductors, to infinitely extended films of arbitrary thickness. An expression for M is obtained that indeed reproduces the M computed from the field derivative of the free energy.

  Abstract The performance of SnO2 ceramic anodes doped with copper and antimony oxides was examined in cryolite alumina melts under anodic polarization at different cryolite ratios, temperatures, times, and current densities. The corroded part consists of a narrow strong corrosion zone at the anode surface with damage of the intergrain contacts and a large increase in porosity, a wider moderate corrosion zone with a smaller porosity increase, and a Cu depletion zone, where the ceramic retains its initial microstructure and a slight porosity increase occurs due to the removal of the Cu-rich inclusions. Mechanical destruction of the anode was never observed in the 10100 h tests. A microstructural model of the ceramic was suggested, consisting of grains with an Sb-doped SnO2 grain core surrounded by an ~200 to 500 nm grain shell where SnO2 was simultaneously doped with Sb and Mn+ (M=Cu2+,Fe3+,Al3+). The grains were separated by a few nanometers thick Cu-enriched grain boundaries. Different secondary charge carrier (holes) concentrations and electric conductivities in the grain core and grain shell result in a higher current density at the intergrain regions that leads to their profound degradation, especially in the low temperature acidic melt.

  Abstract An experimental and theoretical investigation was made of flux jumps and irreversible magnetization curves of mesoscopic Al superconducting rings. In the small magnetic-field region the change of vorticity with magnetic field can be larger than unity. This behavior is connected with the existence of several metastable states of different vorticities. The intentional introduction of a defect in the ring has a large effect on the size of the flux jumps. Calculations based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model allows us to explain the experimental results semiquantitatively.

  Abstract The atomic configurations at macrotwin interfaces between microtwinned martensite plates in Ni65Al35 material are investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The observed structures are interpreted in view of possible formation mechanisms for these interfaces. A distinction is made between cases in which the microtwins, originating from mutually perpendicular {110} austenite planes, enclose a final angle larger or smaller than 90degrees. Two different configurations, a crossing and a step type are described. Depending on the actual case, tapering, bending and tip splitting of the smaller microtwinvariants are observed. The most reproducible deformations occur in a region of approximately 5-10 nm width around the interface while a variety of structural defects are observed further away from the interface. These structures and deformations are interpreted in terms of the coalescence of two separately nucleated microtwinned martensite plates and the need to accommodate remaining stresses.   Abstract The counterions are of crucial importance in determining the mesostructure and morphology of ethanebridged PMO materials synthesized under basic conditions. By using CTABr as the surfactant, the final PMO materials show a 2-D hexagonal (p6mm) mesophase, while PMO materials with cubic (Pm (3) over barn ) mesostructure are obtained when CTACl or CTA(SO4)(1)/(2) are used. With gradually replacing CTABr by CTACl or CTA(SO4) (1)/(2) while keeping the total surfactant concentration constant, a clear p6mm to Pm (3) over barn 3n mesophase evolution process is observed. For a given gel composition, the mesophase of ethanebridged PMO materials can also be adjusted by the addition of different sodium salts. In short, the effect of the counterions on the mesophase can be attributed to the binding strength of the ions on the surfactant micelles, which follows the Hofmeister series (SO42- < Cl- < Br-< NO3- < SCN-). Furthermore, it is found that the hydrolysis and condensation rate of the organosilica precursor also plays an important role in the formation of the final mesostructure

  Abstract Monolithic nickel/carbon (Ni/C) composites were prepared from coal tar pitch-impregnated compressed expanded graphite pre-decorated with NiO particles (EGNiO) by pyrolysis at 550 °C and subsequent steam activation at 800 °C. The microstructural arrangement of the Ni-comprising nanoparticles in the composites was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The specific surface area and porosity of the composites were analyzed by nitrogen adsorption. The catalytic activity of the composites was compared with the material obtained by the conventional H2 treatment of EGNiO using hydrocracking of 2,2,3-trimethylpentane as a model reaction.

  Abstract An efficient method to investigate the microstructure and spatial distribution of nitrogen and nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) defects in detonation nanodiamond (DND) with primary particle sizes ranging from approximately 3 to 50 nm is presented. Detailed analysis reveals atomic nitrogen concentrations as high as 3 at% in 50% of diamond primary particles with sizes smaller than 6 nm. A non-uniform distribution of nitrogen within larger primary DND particles is also presented, indicating a preference for location within the defective central part or at twin boundaries. A photoluminescence (PL) spectrum with well-pronounced zero-phonon lines related to the N-V centers is demonstrated for the first time for electron-irradiated and annealed DND particles at continuous laser excitation. Combined Raman and PL analysis of DND crystallites dispersed on a Si substrate leads to the conclusion that the observed N-V luminescence originates from primary particles with sizes exceeding 30 nm. These findings demonstrate that by manipulation of the size/nitrogen content in DND there are prospects for mass production of nanodiamond photoemitters based on bright and stable luminescence from nitrogen-related defects.

  Abstract A long-standing challenge in physics is to understand why cementite is the predominant carbide in steel. Here we show that the prevalent formation of cementite can be explained only by considering its stability at elevated temperature. A systematic highly accurate quantum mechanical study was conducted on the stability of binary iron carbides. The calculations show that all the iron carbides are unstable relative to the elemental solids, -Fe and graphite. Apart from a cubic Fe23C6 phase, the energetically most favorable carbides exhibit hexagonal close-packed Fe sublattices. Finite-temperature analysis showed that contributions from lattice vibration and anomalous Curie-Weis magnetic ordering, rather than from the conventional lattice mismatch with the matrix, are the origin of the predominance of cementite during steel fabrication processes.
