“Strain engineered linear dichroism and Faraday rotation in few-layer phosphorene”. Li LL, Peeters FM, Applied physics letters 114, 243102 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.5103172
Abstract: We investigate theoretically the linear dichroism and the Faraday rotation of strained few-layer phosphorene, where strain is applied uniaxially along the armchair or zigzag direction of the phosphorene lattice. We calculate the optical conductivity tensor of uniaxially strained few-layer phosphorene by means of the Kubo formula within the tight-binding approach. We show that the linear dichroism and the Faraday rotation of few-layer phosphorene can be significantly modulated by the applied strain. The modulation depends strongly on both the magnitude and direction of strain and becomes more pronounced with increasing number of phosphorene layers. Our results are relevant for mechano-optoelectronic applications based on optical absorption and Hall effects in strained few-layer phosphorene.

“Coulomb drag in strongly coupled quantum wells : temperature dependence of the many-body correlations”. Zarenia M, Conti S, Peeters FM, Neilson D, Applied physics letters 115, 202105 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.5116803
Abstract: We investigate the effect of the temperature dependence of many-body correlations on hole-hole Coulomb drag in strongly coupled GaAs/GaAlAs double quantum wells. For arbitrary temperatures, we obtained the correlations using the classical-map hypernetted-chain approach. We compare the temperature dependence of the resulting drag resistivities rho D(T) at different densities with rho D(T) calculated assuming correlations fixed at zero temperature. Comparing the results with those when correlations are completely neglected, we confirm that correlations significantly increase the drag. We find that the drag becomes sensitive to the temperature dependence of T greater than or similar to 2TF, twice the Fermi temperature. Our results show excellent agreement with available experimental data. Published under license by AIP Publishing.

“A Dirac-semimetal two-dimensional BeN4 : thickness-dependent electronic and optical properties”. Bafekry A, Stampfl C, Faraji M, Yagmurcukardes M, Fadlallah MM, Jappor HR, Ghergherehchi M, Feghhi SAH, Applied Physics Letters 118, 203103 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1063/5.0051878
Abstract: Motivated by the recent experimental realization of a two-dimensional (2D) BeN4 monolayer, in this study we investigate the structural, dynamical, electronic, and optical properties of a monolayer and few-layer BeN4 using first-principles calculations. The calculated phonon band dispersion reveals the dynamical stability of a free-standing BeN4 layer, while the cohesive energy indicates the energetic feasibility of the material. Electronic band dispersions show that monolayer BeN4 is a semi-metal whose conduction and valence bands touch each other at the Sigma point. Our results reveal that increasing the layer number from single to six-layers tunes the electronic nature of BeN4. While monolayer and bilayer structures display a semi-metallic behavior, structures thicker than that of three-layers exhibit a metallic nature. Moreover, the optical parameters calculated for monolayer and bilayer structures reveal that the bilayer can absorb visible light in the ultraviolet and visible regions better than the monolayer structure. Our study investigates the electronic properties of Dirac-semimetal BeN4 that can be an important candidate for applications in nanoelectronic and optoelectronic. “Electronic and magnetic properties of two-dimensional of FeX (X = S, Se, Te) monolayers crystallize in the orthorhombic structures”. Bafekry A, Sarsari IA, Faraji M, Fadlallah MM, Jappor HR, Karbasizadeh S, Nguyen V, Ghergherehchi M, Applied Physics Letters 118, 143102 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1063/5.0046721
Abstract: In this Letter, we explore the lattice, dynamical stability, and electronic and magnetic properties of FeTe bulk and FeX (X=S, Se, Te) monolayers using the density functional calculations. The phonon dispersion relation, elastic stability criteria, and cohesive energy results show the stability of studied FeX monolayers. The mechanical properties reveal that all FeX monolayers have a brittle nature. Furthermore, these structures are stable as we move down the 6A group in the periodic table, i.e., from S, Se, and Te. The stability and work function decrease as the electronegativity decreases. The spin-polarized electronic structures demonstrate that the FeTe monolayer has a total magnetization of 3.8 mu (B), which is smaller than the magnetization of FeTe bulk (4.7 mu (B)). However, FeSe and FeS are nonmagnetic monolayers. The FeTe monolayer can be a good candidate material for spin filter applications due to its electronic and magnetic properties. This study highlights the bright prospect for the application of FeX monolayers in electronic structures.

“Excitation and propagation of spin waves in non-uniformly magnetized waveguides”. Vanderveken F, Ahmad H, Heyns M, Sorée B, Adelmann C, Ciubotaru F, Journal Of Physics D-Applied Physics 53, 495006 (2020). http://doi.org/10.1088/1361-6463/ABB2BE
Abstract: The characteristics of spin waves in ferromagnetic waveguides with non-uniform magnetization have been investigated for situations where the shape anisotropy field of the waveguide is comparable to the external bias field. Spin-wave generation was realized by the magnetoelastic effect by applying normal and shear strain components, as well as by the Oersted field emitted by an inductive antenna. The magnetoelastic excitation field has a non-uniform profile over the width of the waveguide because of the non-uniform magnetization orientation, whereas the Oersted field remains uniform. Using micromagnetic simulations, we indicate that both types of excitation fields generate quantised width modes with both odd and even mode numbers as well as tilted phase fronts. We demonstrate that these effects originate from the average magnetization orientation with respect to the main axes of the magnetic waveguide. Furthermore, it is indicated that the excitation efficiency of the second-order mode generally surpasses that of the first-order mode due to their symmetry. The relative intensity of the excited modes can be controlled by the strain state as well as by tuning the dimensions of the excitation area. Finally, we demonstrate that the nonreciprocity of spin-wave radiation due to the chirality of an Oersted field generated by an inductive antenna is absent for magnetoelastic spin-wave excitation.

“Van der Waals heterostructures of MoS₂, and Janus MoSSe monolayers on graphitic boron-carbon-nitride (BC₃, C₃N, C₃N₄, and C₄N₃) nanosheets: a first-principles study”. Bafekry A, Yagmurcukardes M, Akgenc B, Ghergherehchi M, Nguyen C, Journal Of Physics D-Applied Physics , 1 (2020). http://doi.org/10.1088/1361-6463/AB876C
Abstract: In this work, we extensively investigate the structural and electronic properties of van der Waals heterostructures (HTs) constructed by MoS${2}$/$BC3$, MoS${2}$/$C3N$, MoS${2}$/$C3N4$, MoS${2}$/$C4N3$ and those using Janus MoSSe instead of MoS$2$ by performing density functional theory calculations. The electronic band structure calculations and the corresponding partial density of states reveal that the significant changes are driven by quite strong layer-layer interaction between the constitutive layers. Our results show that although all monolayers are semiconductors as free-standing layers, the MoS${2}$/$C3N$ and MoS${2}$/$C4N3$ bilayer HTs display metallic behavior as a consequence of transfer of charge carriers between two constituent layers. In addition, it is found that in MoSSe/$C3N$ bilayer HT, the degree of metallicity is affected by the interface chalcogen atom type when Se atoms are facing to $C3N$ layer, the overlap of the bands around the Fermi level is smaller. Moreover, the half-metallic magnetic $C4N3$ is shown to form magnetic half-metallic trilayer HT with MoS$2$ independent of the stacking sequence, i.e. whether it is sandwiched or two $C4N3$ layer encapsulate MoS$2$ layer. We further analyze the trilayer HTs in which MoS$2$ is encapsulated by two different monolayers and it is revealed that at least with one magnetic monolayer, it is possible to construct a magnetic trilayer. While the trilayer of $C4N3$/MoS${2}$/$BC3$ and $C4N3$/MoS${2}$/$C3N4$ exhibit half-metallic characteristics, $C4N3$/MoS${_2}$/$C3$N possesses a magnetic metallic ground state. Overall, our results reveal that holly structures of BCN crystals are suitable for heterostructure formation even over van der Waals type interaction which significantly changes electronic nature of the constituent layers.

“Axion insulator states in a topological insulator proximitized to magnetic insulators : a tight-binding characterization”. Shafiei M, Fazileh F, Peeters FM, Milošević, MV, Physical review materials 6, 074205 (2022). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVMATERIALS.6.074205
Abstract: The recent discovery of axion states in materials such as antiferromagnetic topological insulators has boosted investigations of the magnetoelectric response in topological insulators and their promise towards realizing dissipationless topological electronics. In this paper, we develop a tight-binding methodology to explore the emergence of axion states in Bi2Se3 in proximity to magnetic insulators on the top and bottom surfaces. The topological protection of the surface states is lifted by a time-reversal-breaking perturbation due to the proximity of a magnetic insulator, and a gap is opened on the surfaces, giving rise to half-quantized Hall conductance and a zero Hall plateau-evidencing an axion insulator state. We developed a real-space tight-binding Hamiltonian for Bi2Se3 using first-principles data. Transport properties of the system were obtained within the Landauer-Buttiker formalism, and we discuss the creation of axion states through Hall conductance and a zero Hall plateau at the surfaces, as a function of proximitized magnetization and corresponding potentials at the surfaces, as well as the thickness of the topological insulator.

Abstract: Motivated by the potential of atomically thin magnets towards achieving tunable high-frequency magnonics, we detail the spin-wave dispersion of bilayer CrI3. We demonstrate that the magnonic behavior of the bilayer strongly depends on its stacking configuration and the interlayer magnetic ordering, where a topological band gap opens in the dispersion caused by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Kitaev interactions, classifying bilayer CrI3 as a topological magnon insulator. We further reveal that both the size and the topology of the band gap in a CrI3 bilayer with an antiferromagnetic interlayer ordering are tunable by an external magnetic field.

Abstract: Two-dimensional heterostructures are an emerging class of materials for novel applications because of extensive engineering potential by tailoring intriguing properties of different layers as well as the ones arising from their interface. A systematic investigation of mechanical, electronic, and optical properties of possible heterostructures formed by bilayer structures graphenelike ZnO and MgO monolayers is presented. Different functionality of each layer makes these heterostructures very appealing for device applications. ZnO layer is convenient for electron transport in these structures, while MgO layer improves electron collection. At the outset, all of the four possible stacking configurations across the heterostructure are mechanically stable. In addition, stability analysis using phonon dispersion reveals that the AB stacking formed by placing the Mg atom on top of the O atom of the ZnO layer is also dynamically stable at zero temperature. Henceforth, we have investigated the optical properties of these stable heterostructures by applying many-body perturbation theory within the framework of GW approximation and solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation. It is demonstrated that strong excitonic effects reduce the optical band gap to the visible light spectrum range. These results show that this new two-dimensional form of ZnO/MgO heterostructures open an avenue for novel optoelectronic device applications.

Abstract: The wide measured range of thermal conductivities (k) for monolayer MoS2 and the corresponding incongruent calculated values in the literature all suggest that extrinsic defect thermal resistance is significant and varied in synthesized samples of this material. Here we present defect-mediated thermal transport calculations of MoS2 using interatomic forces derived from density functional theory combined with Green's function methods to describe phonon-point-defect interactions and a Peierls-Boltzmann formalism for transport. Conductivity calculations for bulk and monolayer MoS2 using different density functional formalisms are compared. Nonperturbative first-principles methods are used to describe defect-mediated spectral functions, scattering rates, and phonon k, particularly from sulfur vacancies (VS), and in the context of the plethora of measured and calculated literature values. We find that k of monolayer MoS2 is sensitive to phonon-VS scattering in the range of experimentally observed densities, and that first-principles k calculations using these densities can explain the range of measured values found in the literature. Furthermore, measured k values for bulk MoS2 are more consistent because VS defects are not as prevalent.

Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb ferromagnets, such as monolayer chromium trihalides, are predicted to behave as topological magnon insulators, characterized by an insulating bulk and topologically protected edge states, giving rise to a thermal magnon Hall effect. Here we report the behavior of the topological magnons in monolayer CrI3 under external stimuli, including biaxial and uniaxial strain, electric gating, as well as in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic field, revealing that one can thereby tailor the magnetic states as well as the size and the topology of the magnonic bandgap. These findings broaden the perspective of using 2D magnetic materials to design topological magnonic devices.

Abstract: Hydrogen production through photocatalytic water splitting is being developed swiftly to address the ongoing energy crisis. Over the past decade, with the rise of graphene and other two-dimensional (2D) materials, an increasing number of computational and experimental studies have focused on relevant van der Waals (vdW) semiconductor heterostructures for photocatalytic water splitting. In this review, the fundamental mechanism and distinctive performance of type-II and Z-scheme vdW heterostructure photocatalysts are presented. Accordingly, we have conducted a systematic review of recent studies focusing on candidates for photocatalysts, specifically vdW heterostructures involving 2D transition metal disulfides (TMDs), 2D Janus TMDs, and phosphorenes. The photocatalytic performance of these heterostructures and their suitability in theoretical scenarios are discussed based on their electronic and optoelectronic properties, particularly in terms of band structures, photoexcited carrier dynamics, and light absorption. In addition, various approaches for tuning the performance of these potential photocatalysts are illustrated. This strategic framework for constructing and modulating 2D heterostructure photocatalysts is expected to provide inspiration for addressing possible challenges in future studies.

Abstract: Electronic devices that work in the quantum regime often employ hybrid nanostructures to bring about a nonlinear behaviour. The nonlinearity that these can provide has proven to be useful, in particular, for applications in quantum computation. Here we present a hybrid device that acts as a capacitor with a nonlinear charge-voltage relation. The device consists of a nanowire placed between the plates of a coplanar capacitor, with a co-parallel alignment. At low temperatures, due to the finite density of states on the nanowire, the charge distribution in the capacitor is uneven and energy-dependent, resulting in a charge-dependent effective capacitance. We study this system analytically and numerically, and show that the nonlinearity of the capacitance is significant enough to be utilized in circuit quantum electrodynamics. The resulting nonlinearity can be switched on, modulated, and switched off by an external potential, thus making this capacitive device highly versatile for uses in quantum computation.

Abstract: The vibrational properties of 2H-TaSe2-xSx (0≤x≤2) single crystals were probed using Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The end members revealed two out of four symmetry-predicted Raman active modes, together with the pronounced two-phonon structure, attributable to the enhanced electron-phonon coupling. Additional peaks become observable due to crystallographic disorder for the doped samples. The evolution of the E2g2 mode Fano parameter reveals that the disorder has a weak impact on electron-phonon coupling, which is also supported by the persistence of two-phonon structure in doped samples. As such, this research provides thorough insights into the lattice properties, the effects of crystallographic disorder on Raman spectra, and the interplay of this disorder with the electron-phonon coupling in 2H-TaSe2-xSx compounds.

Abstract: We investigated the electron-phonon ( e -ph ) coupling and vibrational thermal conductivity in the representative MAB compounds, namely MoAlB, WAlB, Tc 2 AlB 2 , and Cr 2 AlB 2 . The spectral distribution functions of e -ph interaction, obtained through ab initio linear-response calculations, reveal that the electron-phonon coupling values range from low (0.15) to moderate (0.58). With such e -ph coupling, out of the considered compounds, only Tc 2 AlB 2 exhibits a superconducting transition, at 4 K. We further evaluated the thermal conductivity and associated properties like scattering rates, obtained using ab initio and other methodologies. The latter included the iterative solution of the Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation, using HIPHIVE package for advanced optimization and machine learning techniques, and employing maximum likelihood estimation to approximate scattering rates from a limited set of scattering processes. We found that these methods yield nearly identical predictions for thermal conductivity values, with a significant decrease in the computational cost compared to the first-principles methods. We examined interactions arising from both three-phonon (3 ph ) and four -phonon (4 ph ) scattering processes. The 4 ph interactions demonstrated a smaller yet significant impact on the overall vibrational thermal conductivity, most notably in Tc 2 AlB 2 . Our findings indicate that Cr 2 AlB 2 has the highest thermal conductivity across all considered crystal directions, with the thermal conductivity being spatially anisotropic, most pronouncedly in Tc 2 AlB 2 . Finally, we show that empirical expressions based on Slack models are well suited for screening the thermal conductivity properties of MAB phases, and can be employed to establish upper and lower limits of their thermal conductivity.

Abstract: We explore the emergence of phonon-mediated superconductivity in bilayer borophenes by controlled intercalation with elements from the groups of alkali, alkaline-earth, and transition metals, using systematic first-principles and Eliashberg calculations. We show that the superconducting properties are primarily governed by the interplay between the out-of-plane (????????) boron states and the partially occupied in-plane (????+????????,????) bonding states at the Fermi level. Our Eliashberg calculations indicate that intercalation with alkaline-earth-metal elements leads to the highest superconducting critical temperatures (????????). Specifically, Be in ????4, Mg in ????3, and Ca in the kagome bilayer borophene demonstrate superior performance with ???????? reaching up to 58 K. Our study therefore reveals that intercalated bilayer borophene phases are not only more resilient to chemical deterioration, but also harbor enhanced ???????? values compared to their monolayer counterparts, underscoring their substantial potential for the development of boron-based two-dimensional superconductors.

Abstract: The combination of auxetic property, ferroelasticity, and ferroelectricity in two-dimensional materials offers new avenues for next-generation multifunctional devices. However, two-dimensional materials that simultaneously exhibit those properties are rarely reported. Here, we present a class of two-dimensional Janus-like structures ScLaX2 X 2 (X X = P, As, and Sb) with a rectangular lattice based on first-principles calculations. We predict that those ScLaX2 X 2 monolayers are stable semiconductors with both intrinsic in-plane and out-of-plane auxetic properties, showing a bidirectional negative Poisson's ratio effect. The value of the out-of-plane negative Poisson's ratio effect can reach – 2.28 /- 3.06 /- 3.89. By applying uniaxial strain engineering, two transition paths can be found, including the VA main group element path and the rare-earth metal element path, corresponding to the ferroelastic and the multiferroic (ferroelastic and ferroelectric) phase transition, respectively. For the ScLaSb2 2 monolayer, the external force field can not only control the ferroelastic phase transition, but it can also lead to the reversal of the out-of-plane polarization, exhibiting potential multiferroicity. The coupling between the bidirectional negative Poisson's ratio effect and multiferroicity makes the ScLaX2 X 2 monolayers promising for future device applications.

“Optical properties of metallic MXene multilayers through advanced first-principles calculations”. Kandemir Z, D'Amico P, Sesti G, Cardoso C, Milošević, MV, Sevik C, Physical review materials 8, 075201 (2024). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVMATERIALS.8.075201
Abstract: Having a strong electromagnetic absorption, MXene multilayers are readily envisaged for applications in electromagnetic shields and related prospective technology. However, an ab initio characterization of the optical properties of MXenes is still lacking, due in part to major difficulties with the treatment of metallicity in the first-principles approaches. Here we addressed the latter challenge, after a careful treatment of intraband transitions, to present a thorough analysis of the electronic and optical properties of a selected set of metallic MXene layers based on density functional theory (DFT) and many-body perturbation theory calculations. Our results reveal that the GW corrections are particularly important in regions of the band structure where d and p states hybridize. For some systems, we show that GW corrections open a gap between occupied states, resulting in a band structure that closely resembles that of an intrinsic transparent conductor, thereby opening an additional line of prospective applications for the MXenes family. Nevertheless, GW and Bethe-Salpeter corrections have a minimal influence on the absorption spectra, in contrast to what is typically observed in semiconductor layers. Our present results suggest that calculations within the independent particle approximation (IPA) calculations are sufficiently accurate for assessing the optical characteristics of bulk-layered MXene materials. Finally, our calculated dielectric properties and absorption spectra, in agreement with existing experimental data, confirm the potential of MXenes as effective infrared emitters.

Abstract: We detail the magnetic properties of monolayer CrX2 and its Janus counterparts CrXY (X, Y = S, Se, Te, with X not equal Y) using ab initio methods and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert magnetization dynamics, and uncover the pronouncedly strong interplay between their structure symmetry and the magnetic order. The relaxation of nonmagnetic chalcogen atoms, that carry large spin-orbit coupling, changes the energetically preferential magnetic order between in-plane antiferromagnetic and tilted ferromagnetic one. The considered Janus monolayers exhibit sizable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, in some cases above 20% of the isotropic exchange, and critical temperature of the long-range magnetic order in the vicinity or even significantly above the room temperature.

Abstract: We explore the effect of thickness, magnetization direction, strain, and gating on the topological quantum phase transition of a thin-film magnetic topological insulator. Reducing the film thickness to the ultrathin regime couples the edge states on the two surfaces, opening a gap known as the hybridization gap, and causing a phase transition from a topological insulator to a normal insulator (NI). An out-of-plane/in-plane magnetization of size proportional to the hybridization gap triggers a phase transition from a normal insulator state to a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH)/semimetal state. A magnetization tilt by angle 0 from the out-of-plane axis influences the topological phase transition in a way that for sufficiently large 0, no phase transition from NI to QAH can be observed regardless of the sample thickness or magnetization, and for 0 close to pi /2 the system transits to a semimetal phase. Furthermore, we demonstrate that compressive/tensile strain can be used to decrease/increase the magnetization threshold for the topological phase transition. Finally, we reveal the effect of a vertical potential acting on the film, be it due to the substrate or applied gating, which breaks inversion symmetry and raises the magnetization threshold for the transition from NI to QAH state.

Van Holsbeke C, Vos W, van Hoorenbeeck K, Boudewyns A, Salgado R, Verdonck PR, Ramet J, de Backer J, De Backer W, Verhulst SL, Sleep Medicine 14, 433 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.sleep.2012.12.005
Abstract: Objective: We aim to investigate if anatomical and functional properties of the upper airway using computerized 3D models derived from computed tomography (CT) scans better predict obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity than standard clinical markers. Methods: Consecutive children with suspected OSA underwent polysomnography, clinical assessment of upper airway patency, and a CT scan while awake. A three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the pharyngeal airway was built from these images, and computational fluid dynamics modeling of low inspiratory flow was performed using open-source software. Results: Thirty-three children were included (23 boys; mean age, was 6.0 +/- 3.2 y). OSA was diagnosed in 23 patients. Children with OSA had a significantly lower volume of the overlap region between tonsils and the adenoids (median volume, 1408 mm compared to 2173 mm; p = 0.04), a lower mean cross-sectional area at this location (median volume, 69.3 mm(2) compared to 114.3 mm(2); p = 0.04), and a lower minimal cross-sectional area (median volume, 17.9 mm(2) compared to 25.9 mm(2); p = 0.05). Various significant correlations were found between several imaging parameters and the severity of OSA, most pronounced for upper airway conductance (r = -0.46) (p < 0.01) for correlation between upper airway conductance and the apnea-hypopnea index. No differences or significant correlations were observed with clinical parameters of upper airway patency. Preliminary data after treatment showed that none of the patients with residual OSA had their smallest cross-sectional area located in segment 3, and this frequency was significantly lower than in their peers whose sleep study normalized (64%; p = 0.05). Conclusion: Functional imaging parameters are highly correlated with OSA severity and are a more powerful correlate than clinical scores of upper airway patency. Preliminary data also showed that we could identify differences in the upper airway of those subjects who did not benefit from a local upper airway treatment. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. “Experimental and computational investigation of graphene/SAMs/n-Si Schottky diodes”. Aydin H, Bacaksiz C, Yagmurcukardes N, Karakaya C, Mermer O, Can M, Senger RT, Sahin H, Selamet Y, Applied Surface Science 428, 1010 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.APSUSC.2017.09.204
Abstract: We have investigated the effect of two different self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on electrical characteristics of bilayer graphene (BLG)/n-Si Schottky diodes. Novel 4“bis(diphenylamino)-1, 1':3”-terpheny1-5' carboxylic acids (TPA) and 4,4-di-9H-carbazol-9-y1-1,1':3'1'-terpheny1-5' carboxylic acid (CAR) aromatic SAMs have been used to modify n-Si surfaces. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) results have been evaluated to verify the modification of n-Si surface. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of bare and SAMs modified devices show rectification behaviour verifying a Schottky junction at the interface. The ideality factors (n) from ln(I)-V dependences were determined as 2.13,1.96 and 2.07 for BLG/n-Si, BLG/TPA/n-Si and BLG/CAR/n-Si Schottky diodes, respectively. In addition, Schottky barrier height (SBH) and series resistance (Rs) of SAMs modified diodes were decreased compared to bare diode due to the formation of a compatible interface between graphene and Si as well as n-n interaction between aromatic SAMs and graphene. The CAR-based device exhibits better diode characteristic compared to the TPA-based device. Computational simulations show that the BLG/CAR system exhibits smaller energy-level-differences than the BLG/TPA, which supports the experimental findings of a lower Schottky barrier and series resistance in BLG/CAR diode. “Atomistic simulation of ultra-short pulsed laser ablation of metals with single and double pulses : an investigation of the re-deposition phenomenon”. Foumani AA, Forster DJ, Ghorbanfekr H, Weber R, Graf T, Niknam AR, Applied Surface Science 537, 147775 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.APSUSC.2020.147775
Abstract: The demand for higher throughput in the processing of materials with ultra-short pulsed lasers has motivated studies on the use of double pulses (DP). It has been observed in such studies that at relatively high time delays between the two pulses, the ablated volume is lower than that for a single pulse (SP). This has been attributed to the shielding of the second pulse and the re-deposition of the material removed by the first pulse. The investigation of re-deposition in copper with the aid of atomistic simulations is the main objective of this study. Nevertheless, a computational investigation of SP-ablation and experimental measurement of the SP-ablation depths and threshold fluence are also covered. The applied computational apparatus comprises a combination of molecular dynamics with the two-temperature model and the Helmholtz wave equation. The analysis of the simulation results shows that the derived quantities like the SP-ablation threshold fluence and the ratio of DP ablation depth to SP-ablation depth are in agreement with the experimental values. An important finding of this study is that the characteristics of the re-deposition process are highly dependent on the fluence.

“Electro-optical and mechanical properties of Zinc antimonide (ZnSb) monolayer and bilayer : a first-principles study”. Bafekry A, Yagmurcukardes M, Shahrokhi M, Ghergherehchi M, Kim D, Mortazavi B, Applied Surface Science 540, 148289 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.APSUSC.2020.148289
Abstract: Latest synthesis of ZnSb monolayer, encouraged us to conduct density functional theory (DFT) simulations in order to study the structural, magnetic, electronic/optical and mechanical features of the sp2-hybridized honeycomb ZnSb monolayer (ML-ZnSb) and bilayer (BL-ZnSb). Our structural optimizations reveal that ML-ZnSb is an anisotropic hexagonal structure while BL-ZnSb is composed of shifted ZnSb layers which are covalently binded. ML-ZnSb is found to be a ferromagnetic metal, in contrast BL-ZnSb has a non-magnetic indirect band gap semiconducting ground state. For the in-plane polarization, first absorption peak of ML-ZnSb and BL-ZnSb confirm the absorbance of the light within the infrared domain wand visible range, respectively. Moreover, our results reveal that the layer-layer chemical bonding in BL-ZnSb significantly enhances the mechanical response of ML-ZnSb whose in-plane stiness is the smallest among all 2D materials (2DM). Notably, the strong in-plane anisotropy of ML-ZnSb in its stiness reduces in BL-ZnSb.

“Stable Janus TaSe₂, single-layers via surface functionalization”. Kahraman Z, Baskurt M, Yagmurcukardes M, Chaves A, Sahin H, Applied Surface Science 538, 148064 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.APSUSC.2020.148064
Abstract: First-principles calculations are performed in order to investigate the formation of Janus structures of single layer TaSe2. The structural optimizations and phonon band dispersions reveal that the formation and stability of hydrogenated (HTaSe2), fluorinated (FTaSe2), and the one-side hydrogenated and one-side fluorinated (Janus-HTaSe2F) single-layers are feasible in terms of their phonon band dispersions. It is shown that bare metallic single-layer TaSe2 can be turned into a semiconductor as only one of its surface is functionalized while it remains as a metal via its two surfaces functionalization. In addition, the semiconducting nature of single-layers HTaSe2 and FTaSe2 and the metallic behavior of Janus TaSe2 are found to be robust under applied uniaxal strains. Further analysis on piezoelectric properties of the predicted single-layers reveal the enhanced in-plane and out of-plane piezoelectricity via formed Janus-HTaSe2F. Our study indicates that single-layer TaSe2 is a suitable host material for surface functionalization via fluorination and hydrogenation which exhibit distinctive electronic and vibrational properties.

“Adsorption of habitat and industry-relevant molecules on the MoSi₂N₄, monolayer”. Bafekry A, Faraji M, Fadlallah MM, Ziabari AA, Khatibani AB, Feghhi SAH, Ghergherehchi M, Gogova D, Applied Surface Science 564, 150326 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.APSUSC.2021.150326
Abstract: The adsorption of various environmental gas molecules, including H-2, N-2, CO, CO2, O-2, NO, NO2, SO2 H2O, H2S, NH3 and CH4, on the surface of the recently synthesized two dimensional MoSi2N4 (MSN) monolayer has been investigated by means of spin-polarized first-principles calculations. The most stable adsorption configuration, adsorption energy, and charge transfer have been computed. Due to the weak interaction between molecules studied with the MSN monolayer surface, the adsorption energy is small and does not yield any significant distortion of the MSN lattice, i.e., the interaction between the molecules and MSN monolayer surface is physisorption. We find that all molecules are physisorbed on the MSM surface with small charge transfer, acting as either charge acceptors or donors. The MSN monolayer is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 1.79 eV. Our theoretical estimations reveal that upon adsorption of H-2, N-2, CO, CO2, NO, H2O, H2S, NH3 and CH4 molecules, the semiconducting character of MSN monolayer is preserved and the band gap value is decreased to similar to 1.5 eV. However, the electronic properties of the MSN monolayer can be significantly altered by adsorption of O-2, NO and SO2, and a spin polarization with magnetic moments of 2, 1, 2 mu(B), respectively, can be introduced. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the band gap and the magnetic moment of adsorbed MSN monolayer can be significantly modulated by the concentration of NO and SO2 molecules. As the concentration of NO2 molecule increases, the magnetic moment increase from 1 mu(B) to 2 and 3 mu(B). In the case of the SO2 molecule with increasing of concentration, the band gap decreases from 1.2 eV to 1.1 and 0.9 eV. Obviously, our theoretical studies indicate that MSN monolayer-based sensor has a high application potential for O-2, NO, NO2 and SO2 detection.

“Tunable electronic and magnetic properties of MoSi₂N₄, monolayer via vacancy defects, atomic adsorption and atomic doping”. Bafekry A, Faraji M, Fadlallah MM, Khatibani AB, Ziabari A abdolahzadeh, Ghergherehchi M, Nedaei S, Shayesteh SF, Gogova D, Applied Surface Science 559, 149862 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.APSUSC.2021.149862
Abstract: The two dimensional MoSi2N4 (MSN) monolayer exhibiting rich physical and chemical properties was synthesized for the first time last year. We have used the spin-polarized density functional theory to study the effect of different types of point defects on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the MSN monolayer. Adsorbed, substitutionally doped (at different lattice sites), and some kind of vacancies have been considered as point defects. The computational results show all defects studied decrease the MSN monolayer band gap. We found out the H-, O-, and P-doped MSN are n-type conductors. The arsenic-doped MSN, and MSN with vacancy defects have a magnetic moment. The MSN with a Si vacancy defect is a half-metallic which is favorable for spintronic applications, while the MSN with a single N vacancy or double vacancy (N + S) defects are metallic, i. e., beneficial as spin filters and chemical sensors.

“Conditions defining the mechanisms of the formation of light gas ions in multicomponent laser-produced plasmas”. Khaydarov RT, Beisinbaeva HB, Sabitov MM, Kalal M, Berdiyorov GR, Nuclear fusion 50, 105007 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1088/0029-5515/50/10/105007
Abstract: Using the mass-spectrometric method we study the charge, energy and spatial characteristics of ions in multicomponent plasma, generated under the action of Nd : YAG laser radiation on the surface of solid targets. We focus on the effect of the entry form of light gas atoms on the parameters of ions in such laser-produced plasmas. We found that the presence of light gas atoms considerably affects the parameters (e.g. the intensity and the charge multiplicity) of the heavier ions.

“Effect of light gas atom inclusions on the characteristics of laser-produced plasma ions”. Khaydarov RT, Beisinbaeva HB, Sabitov MM, Kalal M, Berdiyorov GR, Nuclear fusion 51, 103041 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1088/0029-5515/51/10/103041
Abstract: Using the mass-spectrometric method we studied the effect of light gas inclusions on the formation process of multi-component laser-induced plasma ions. Masscharge characteristics, as well as energy and spatial distribution of the plasma ions are analysed. We found that both the energy and maximal charge of heavy component ions decrease due to the presence of gas atoms in the solid target surface layer.
