Abstract Glassy phases which have insulating character exist for a variety of monatomic species. By contrast, until recently, it has been possible to make bulk metallic glasses (BMG) by vitrification only for multicomponent systems. After a relatively brief summary on supercooling of a few molecular liquids, we review some of the recently reported results on molecular assemblies of the series N, P, As and amorphous Si and Ge. Based on these results, we suggest that the transition metals with their directional bonding might be suitable candidates for the production of BMG by vitrification.

Abstract We present an exact diagonalization study of negatively charged excitonic trions in two vertically coupled parabolic quantum dots. The electrons and the hole are confined to different dots. We obtain the energy spectra as a function of inter-dot separation and external magnetic field strength and identify different ground-state angular momentum transitions which are accompanied by abrupt charge redistributions in the dots. Abstract A transition-metal-only MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 polycrystalline oxide was prepared by a reaction of starting materials MnO, MnO2, Fe2O3, RuO2 at 6 GPa and 1873 K for 30 minutes. A combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction refinements indicated that MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 adopts the corundum (alpha-Fe2O3) structure type with space group R (3) over barc, in which all metal ions are disordered. The centrosymmetric nature of the MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 structure is corroborated by transmission electron microscopy, lack of optical second harmonic generation, X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy of MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 showed the oxidation states of Mn, Fe, and Ru to be 2+/3+, 3+, and similar to 4+, respectively. Resistivity measurements revealed that MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 is a semiconductor. Magnetic measurements and magnetic structure refinements indicated that MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 orders antiferromagnetically around 400 K, with magnetic moments slightly canted away from the c axis. Fe-57 Mossbauer confirmed the magnetic ordering and Fe3+ (S = 5/2) magnetic hyperfine splitting. First principles calculations are provided to understand the electronic structure more thoroughly. A comparison of synthesis and properties of MnFe0.5Ru0.5O3 and related corundum Mn2BB'O-6 derivatives is discussed.

Abstract The effects of high dose ion irradiation in β CuZnAl were investigated between room temperature and 150 °C. Single crystal samples with surface normal close to [001]β were irradiated with 300 keV Cu+ ions. Microstructural changes were characterized using transmission electron microscopy. Irradiation induced cavities located on the surface exposed to the irradiation were observed. The morphology, size and density distribution of these cavities were analyzed as a function of different irradiation conditions. The shape and location of the cavities with respect to the irradiation surface were not affected by irradiation temperature or irradiation dose. Instead, the cavity size distribution showed a bi-modal shape for a dose of 15 dpa, regardless of irradiation temperature. For a dose of 30 dpa the bi-modal distribution was only observed after room temperature irradiation. The diffusion effects of vacancies produced by irradiation are analyzed in shape memory CuZnAl alloys, which main characteristic is the diffusionless martensitic transformation. Particularly, the cavity size distributions were analyzed in terms of nucleation, growth and coalescence.

Abstract The microstructural and compositional evolution during initial annealing of a superconducting (Bi,Pb)(2)Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta/Ag tape is studied using quantitative transmission electron microscopy. Special attention is devoted to the occurrence of Pb-rich liquids, which are crucial for the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta to (Bi,Pb)(2)Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta transformation. Ca and/or Pb-rich (Bi,Pb)(2)Sr2CaCu2O8+delta grains dissolve into a liquid, which reacts with Ca-rich phases to increase the liquid's Ca-content. This leads to (Bi,Pb)(2)Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta formation. Apparently, a Ca/Sr ratio of around I is sufficient to keep (Bi,Pb)(2)Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+delta nucleation going. It is confirmed that Ag particles are transported from the Ag-sheath into the oxide core by the liquid and not by mechanical treatment of the tape.

Abstract Electron microscopy is an indispensable tool for the characterization of (nano) materials. Electron microscopes are typically very expensive and their internal operation is often shielded from the user. This situation can provide fast and high quality results for researchers focusing on e.g. materials science if they have access to the relevant instruments. For researchers focusing on technique development, wishing to test novel setups, however, the high entry price can lead to risk aversion and deter researchers from innovating electron microscopy technology further. The closed attitude of commercial entities about how exactly the different parts of electron microscopes work, makes it even harder for newcomers in this field. Here we propose an affordable, easy-to-build electron detector for use in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The aim of this project is to shed light on the functioning of such detectors as well as show that even a very modest design can lead to acceptable performance while providing high flexibility for experimentation and customization.

Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract In this study, we explore the possibility to use deep learning for the reconstruction of phase images from 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) data. The process can be divided into two main steps. First, the complex electron wave function is recovered for a convergent beam electron diffraction pattern (CBED) using a convolutional neural network (CNN). Subsequently, a corresponding patch of the phase object is recovered using the phase object approximation. Repeating this for each scan position in a 4D-STEM dataset and combining the patches by complex summation yields the full-phase object. Each patch is recovered from a kernel of 3x3 adjacent CBEDs only, which eliminates common, large memory requirements and enables live processing during an experiment. The machine learning pipeline, data generation, and the reconstruction algorithm are presented. We demonstrate that the CNN can retrieve phase information beyond the aperture angle, enabling super-resolution imaging. The image contrast formation is evaluated showing a dependence on the thickness and atomic column type. Columns containing light and heavy elements can be imaged simultaneously and are distinguishable. The combination of super-resolution, good noise robustness, and intuitive image contrast characteristics makes the approach unique among live imaging methods in 4D-STEM.

Year 2004 Publication Physics letters : A Abbreviated Journal Phys Lett A
Volume 322 Issue 5-6 Pages (down) 384-389
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract This Letter presents a generalized Ginzburg-Landau equation for the superconducting order parameter which includes the terms resulting from the confining interaction associated with the specimen boundary. While the original Ginzburg-Landau theory had been developed for a bulk superconductor, this generalization is meant for study of a meso-superconductor. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Title Globular structure of M2 high speed steel by thermomechanical treatment in the semisolid state Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The globular structure of M2 high speed steel in the rolled – annealed and as cast conditions was investigated in the semisolid state. Metallographic observations resulted in globular austenite particles that were surrounded by a liquid phase. Dissolution of various carbides in the austenite phase at semisolid temperatures led to grain boundary liquation and formation of near-spherical solid grains in a liquid matrix. Therefore, at the semisolid state, the solid particles were free from carbides. MC- type and M6C- type eutectic carbides re- precipitated at the grain boundaries during cooling of the samples from the semisolid temperature. The variation of shape factor versus holding time and holding temperature was examined. A transition value for shape factor changes in high speed steels was achieved. The growth rate constants of the Ostwald ripening and the coalescence mechanisms were calculated by using the experimentally determined rate constant. It was observed that less liquid droplets were enclosed inside the solid particles compared with non-ferrous alloys. Besides, it has been shown that at high solid fraction, the Ostwald ripening mechanism plays a prominent role in the coarsening phenomenon in comparison with the coalescence mechanism. Grains can rotate and arrange low misorientation with each other at high liquid contents, therefore low energetic grain boundaries form between these grains. These grain boundaries play an important role in the coalescence mechanism.

Title A scanning electron microscopy study on hollow silica microspheres: defects and influences of the synthesis composition Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Defects on hollow silica spheres synthesized in a tetraethylorthosilicate-octylamine-HCl-H2O system were recorded by scanning microscope. Based on the results, influences of synthesis composition on the formation of these defects are discussed. It is evidenced that products prepared with different octylamine-to-tetraethylorthosilicate ratios may have surface depressions, cracks and non-hollow microspheres. However, by changing water and acid additions, these defects could be reduced or eliminated. Generally, samples synthesized with a large octylamine addition commonly exhibit surface depressions. A small octylamine or a large water addition benefits the formation of solid silica microspheres among the product. Acid, although is not indispensable for the formation of hollow spheres, helps to eliminate or reduce depressions on the hollow shells. It is explained that the added acid gives rise to a relative localized fast hydrolysis versus condensation, facilitating an easy mobility of hydrolyzed silica species, and consequently the shell surface is smoothened.

Abstract We present results of Monte Carlo simulations of chains of C-60 and chains of C-70 molecules encapsulated in a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT). We observe the changes in the configuration of the fullerene molecules when varying tube radius and temperature. In particular, the evolution of the pair correlation functions reveal a transition from linear harmonic chain behavior to a hard-sphere liquid upon heating, demonstrating the possibility of tuning properties of C-60- and C-70@SWCNT peapods with radius and temperature.

Abstract Sensitive multi‐element analytical techniques were applied to determine 24 dissolved trace components in 25 different water samples from a 10 km2 zone in Brittany, France. Correspondence factor and multiple regression analyses showed that the elements considered are influenced mainly by the presence of: Fe‐Mn oxide accumulations, a local poly‐metallic sulfide mineralization, and non‐mineralized host rocks, agricultural activity and abundant organic material in local swamps. Via these numerical techniques the location of the poly‐metallic ore body can be derived from the data set.
