Abstract: Various theoretical and experimental methods are utilized to investigate the thermal conductivity of nanostructured materials; this is a critical parameter to increase performance of thermoelectric devices. Among these methods, equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) is an accurate technique to predict lattice thermal conductivity. In this study, by means of systematic EMD simulations, thermal conductivity of bulk Si-Ge structures (pristine, alloy and superlattice) and their nanostructured one dimensional forms with square and circular cross-section geometries (asymmetric and symmetric) are calculated for different crystallographic directions. A comprehensive temperature analysis is evaluated for selected structures as well. The results show that one-dimensional structures are superior candidates in terms of their low lattice thermal conductivity and thermal conductivity tunability by nanostructuring, such as by diameter modulation, interface roughness, periodicity and number of interfaces. We find that thermal conductivity decreases with smaller diameters or cross section areas. Furthermore, interface roughness decreases thermal conductivity with a profound impact. Moreover, we predicted that there is a specific periodicity that gives minimum thermal conductivity in symmetric superlattice structures. The decreasing thermal conductivity is due to the reducing phonon movement in the system due to the effect of the number of interfaces that determine regimes of ballistic and wave transport phenomena. In some nanostructures, such as nanowire superlattices, thermal conductivity of the Si/Ge system can be reduced to nearly twice that of an amorphous silicon thermal conductivity. Additionally, it is found that one crystal orientation, <100>, is better than the <111> crystal orientation in one-dimensional and bulk SiGe systems. Our results clearly point out the importance of lattice thermal conductivity engineering in bulk and nanostructures to produce high-performance thermoelectric materials.

Abstract: The present contribution gives a review of recent quantification work of atom displacements, atom site occupations and level of crystallinity in various systems and based on aberration corrected HR(S)TEM images. Depending on the case studied, picometer range precisions for individual distances can be obtained, boundary widths at the unit cell level determined or statistical evolutions of fractions of the ordered areas calculated. In all of these cases, these quantitative measures imply new routes for the applications of the respective materials.

Abstract: CO2 conversion into value-added chemicals is gaining increasing interest in recent years, and a gliding arc plasma has great potential for this purpose, because of its high energy efficiency. In this study, a chemical reaction kinetics model is presented to study the CO2 splitting in a gliding arc discharge. The calculated
conversion and energy efficiency are in good agreement with experimental data in a range of different operating conditions. Therefore, this reaction kinetics model can be used to elucidate the dominant chemical reactions contributing to CO2 destruction and formation. Based on this reaction pathway analysis, the restricting factors for CO2 conversion are figured out, i.e., the reverse reactions and the small treated gas fraction. This allows us to propose some solutions in order to improve the CO2 conversion, such as decreasing the gas temperature, by using a high frequency discharge, or increasing the power
density, by using a micro-scale gliding arc reactor, or by removing the reverse reactions, which could be realized in practice by adding possible scavengers for O atoms, such as CH4. Finally, we compare our results with other types of plasmas in terms of conversion and energy efficiency, and the results illustrate that gliding arc discharges are indeed quite promising for CO2 conversion, certainly when keeping in mind the possible solutions for further performance improvement.

Abstract: Polycrystalline samples of CaLn(2)Ni(2)WO(9) (Ln=La, Pr, Nd) have been synthesized and characterised by a combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction, electron microscopy and magnetometry. Each composition adopts a perovskite-like structure with a similar to 5.50, b similar to 5.56, c similar to 7.78 angstrom beta similar to 90.1 degrees in space group P2(1)/n. Of the two crystallographically distinct six-coordinate sites, one is occupied entirely (Ln=Pr) or predominantly (Ln=La, Nd) by Ni2+ and the other by Ni2+ and W6+ in a ratio of approximately 1:2. None of the compounds shows long-range magnetic order at 5 K. The magnetometry data show that the magnetic moments of the Ni2+ cations form a spin glass below 30 K in each case. The Pr3+ moments in CaPr2Ni2WO9 also freeze but the Nd3+ moments in CaNd2Ni2WO9 do not. This behaviour is contrasted with that observed in other (A,A')B2B'O-9 perovskites.

Abstract: Epitaxially grown ultra-thin Si layers are often used to passivate Ge surfaces in the high-k gate module of (strained) Ge FinFET devices. We use Si4H10 as Si precursor as it enables epitaxial Si growth at temperatures down to 330 degrees C. C-V characteristics of blanket capacitors made on Ge virtual substrates point to the presence of an optimal Si thickness. In case of compressively strained Ge fin structures, the Si growth results in non-uniform and high strain levels in the strained Ge fin. These strain levels have been calculated for different shapes of the Ge fin and in function of the grown Si thickness. The high strain is the driving force for potential (unwanted) Ge surface reflow during the Si deposition. The Ge surface reflow is strongly affected by the strength of the H-passivation during Si-capping and can be avoided by carefully selected process conditions.

Abstract: Nanocomposites CoOx/SnO2 based on tin oxide powders with different crystallinity have been prepared by wet chemical synthesis and characterized in detail by ICP-MS, XPS, EPR, XRD, HAADF-STEM imaging and EDX-STEM mapping. It was shown that cobalt is distributed differently between the bulk and surface of SnO2 nanocrystals, which depends on the crystallinity of the SnO2 matrix. The measurements of gas sensor properties have been carried out during exposure to CO (10 ppm), and H2S (2 ppm) in dry air. The decrease of sensor signal toward CO was attributed to high catalytic activity of Co3O4 leading to oxidation of carbon monoxide entirely on the surface of catalyst particles. The formation of a p-CoOx/n-SnO2 heterojunction results in high sensitivity of nanocomposites in H2S detection. The conductance significantly changed in the presence of H2S, which was attributed to the formation of metallic cobalt sulfide and removal of the p – n junction.

Abstract: Despite the enormous interest in the properties and applications of porous silica matrix, only a few attempts have been reported to deposit metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) inside the porous silica matrix. We report a simple approach (i.e. sol-gel hot injection) for insitu synthesis of ZnO NPs inside a porous silica matrix. Control of the Zn:Si molar ratio, reaction temperature, pH value, and annealing temperature permits formation of ZnO NPs (<= 10 nm) inside a porous silica particles, without additives or organic solvents. Results revealed that a solid state reaction inside the ZnO/SiO2 nanocomposites occurs with increasing the annealing temperature. The reaction of ZnO NPs with SiO2 matrix was insignificant up to approximately 500 degrees C. However, ZnO NPs react strongly with the silica matrix when the nanocomposites are annealed at temperatures above 700 degrees C. Extensive annealing of the ZnO/SiO2 nanocomposite at 900 degrees C yields 3D structures made of 500 nm rod-like, 5-7 pm tube-like and 35 pm needle-like Zn2SiO4 crystals. A possible mechanism for forming ZnO NPs inside porous silica matrix and phase transformation of the ZnO/SiO2 nanocomposites into 3D architectures of Zn2SiO4 are carefully discussed. Abstract: <script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('The crystal and defect structure of SnS crystals grown using chemical vapour deposition for application in electronic devices are investigated. The structural analysis shows the presence of two distinct crystal morphologies, that is thin flakes with lateral sizes up to 50 m and nanometer scale thickness, and much thicker but smaller crystallites. Both show similar Raman response associated with SnS. The structural analysis with transmission electron microscopy shows that the flakes are single crystals of -SnS with [010] normal to the substrate. Parallel with the surface of the flakes, lamellae with varying thickness of a new SnS phase are observed. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), first-principles simulations (DFT) and nanobeam diffraction (NBD) techniques are employed to characterise this phase in detail. DFT results suggest that the phase is a strain stabilised \u0027 one grown epitaxially on the -SnS crystals. TEM analysis shows that the crystallites are also -SnS with generally the [010] direction orthogonal to the substrate. Contrary to the flakes the crystallites consist of two to four grains which are tilted up to 15 degrees relative to the substrate. The various grain boundary structures and twin relations are discussed. Under high-dose electron irradiation, the SnS structure is reduced and -Sn formed. It is shown that this damage only occurs for SnS in direct contact with SiO2. Lay description SnS is a p-type semiconductor, which has attracted significant interest for electronic devices due to its unique properties, low-toxicity and abundance of Sn in nature. Although in the past it has been most extensively studied as the absorber material in solar cells, it has recently garnered interest for application as a p-type two-dimensional semiconductor in nanoelectronic devices due to its anisotropic layered structure similar to the better known phosphorene. Tin sulphide can take the form of several phases and the electronic properties of the material depend strongly on its crystal structure. It is therefore crucial to study the crystal structure of the material in order to predict the electronic properties and gain insight into the growth mechanism. In this work, SnS crystals deposited using a chemical vapour deposition technique are investigated extensively for their crystal and defect structure using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and related techniques. We find the presence of two distinct crystal morphologies, that is thin flakes with lateral sizes up to 50 m and nm scale thickness, and much thicker but smaller crystallites. The flakes are single crystals of -SnS and contain lamellae with varying thickness of a different phase which appear to be -SnS at first glance. High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy is used to characterise these lamellae where the annular bright field (ABF) mode better reveals the position of the sulphur columns. The sulphur columns in the lamellae are found to be shifted relative to the -SnS structure which indicates the formation of a new phase which is a distorted version of the phase which we tentatively refer to as \u0027-SnS. Simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) are used to model the interface and a similar shift of sulphur columns in the -SnS layer is observed which takes place as a result of strong interaction at the interface between the two phases resulting in strain transfer. Nanobeam electron diffraction (NBD) is used to map the lattice mismatch in the thickness of the flakes which reveals good in-plane matching and some expansion out-of-plane in the lamellae. Contrary to the flakes the crystallites are made solely of -SnS and consist of two to four grains which are tilted up to 15 degrees relative to the substrate. Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) carbon nitride materials play an important role in energy-harvesting, energy-storage and environmental applications. Recently, a new carbon nitride, 2D polyaniline (C3N) was proposed [PNAS 113 (2016) 7414-7419]. Based on the structure model of this C3N monolayer, we propose two new carbon nitride monolayers, named dumbbell (DB) C4N-I and C4N-II. Using first-principles calculations, we systematically study the structure, stability, and band structure of these two materials. In contrast to other carbon nitride monolayers, the orbital hybridization of the C/N atoms in the DB C4N monolayers is sp(3). Remarkably, the band structures of the two DB C4N monolayers have a Dirac cone at the K point and their Fermi velocities (2.6/2.4 x 10(5) m/s) are comparable to that of graphene. This makes them promising materials for applications in high-speed electronic devices. Using a tight-binding model, we explain the origin of the Dirac cone. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: In this contribution, we report a fundamental study of the factors that set the contact resistivity between metals and highly doped semiconductors. We investigate the case of n-type doped Si contacted with amorphous TiSi combining first-principles calculations with Non-Equilibrium Green functions transport simulations. The intrinsic contact resistivity is found to saturate at similar to 2x10(-10) Omega.cm(2) with the doping concentration and sets an intrinsic limit to the ultimate contact resistance achievable for n-doped Si vertical bar amorphous-TiSi. This limit arises from the intrinsic properties of the semiconductor and of the metal such as their electron effective masses and Fermi energies. We illustrate that, in this regime, contacting metals with a heavy electron effective mass helps reducing the interface intrinsic contact resistivity.

Abstract: The Wigner-Liouville equation is reformulated using a spectral decomposition of the classical force field instead of the potential energy. The latter is shown to simplify the Wigner-Liouville kernel both conceptually and numerically as the spectral force Wigner-Liouville equation avoids the numerical evaluation of the highly oscillatory Wigner kernel which is nonlocal in both position and momentum. The quantum mechanical evolution is instead governed by a term local in space and non-local in momentum, where the non locality in momentum has only a limited range. An interpretation of the time evolution in terms of two processes is presented; a classical evolution under the influence of the averaged driving field, and a probability-preserving quantum-mechanical generation and annihilation term. Using the inherent stability and reduced complexity, a direct deterministic numerical implementation using Chebyshev and Fourier pseudo-spectral methods is detailed. Abstract: A polycrystalline sample of Ba3Fe2TeO9 having the 6H perovskite structure has been prepared in a solid-state reaction and studied by a combination of electron microscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction. Partial ordering of Fe3+ and Te6+ cations occurs over the six-coordinate sites; the corner-sharing octahedra are predominantly occupied by the former and the face-sharing octahedra by a 1:1 mixture of the two. On cooling through the temperature range 18 < T/K < 295 an increasing number of spins join an antiferromagnetic backbone running through the structure while the remainder show complex relaxation effects. At 3 K an antiferromagnetic phase and a spin glass coexist.

Abstract: The adsorption of CO2 on surfaces of graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), decorated with Fe atoms, are investigated using the self-consistent-charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) method, neglecting the heat effects. Fe ad-atoms are more stable when they are dispersed on hollow sites. They introduce a large density of states at the Fermi level (N-F); where keeping such density low would help in gas sensing. Furthermore, the Fe ad-atom can weaken the C=O double bonds of the chemisorbed CO2 molecule, paving the way for oxygen atoms to drain more charges from Fe. Consequently, chemisorption of CO2 molecules reduces both N-F and the conductance while it enhances the sensitivity with the increasing gas dose. Conducting armchair CNTs (ac-CNTs) have higher sensitivity than graphene and semiconducting zigzag CNTs (zz-CNT5). Comparative study of sensitivity of ac-CNT-Fe composite towards various gases (e.g., O-2, N-2, H-2, H2O, CO and CO2) has shown high sensitivity and selectivity towards CO, CO2 and H2O gases.
