Abstract: We study the structural phase transitions in confined systems of strongly interacting particles. We consider infinite quasi-one-dimensional systems with different pairwise repulsive interactions in the presence of an external confinement following a power law. Within the framework of Landaus theory, we find the necessary conditions to observe continuous transitions and demonstrate that the only allowed continuous transition is between the single- and the double-chain configurations and that it only takes place when the confinement is parabolic. We determine analytically the behavior of the system at the transition point and calculate the critical exponents. Furthermore, we perform Monte Carlo simulations and find a perfect agreement between theory and numerics.

Abstract: The persistent current in two vertically coupled quantum rings containing few electrons is studied. We find that the Coulomb interaction between the rings in the absence of tunneling affects the persistent current in each ring and the ground-state configurations. Quantum tunneling between the rings alters significantly the ground state and the persistent current in the system.

“Controlling magnetic flux motion by arrays of zigzag-arranged magnetic bars”. Kapra AV, Misko VR, Peeters FM, Superconductor science and technology 26, 025011 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1088/0953-2048/26/2/025011
Abstract: Recent advances in manufacturing arrays of artificial pinning sites, i.e., antidots, blind holes and magnetic dots, allowed an effective control of magnetic flux in superconductors. An array of magnetic bars deposited on top of a superconducting film was shown to display different pinning regimes depending on the direction of the in-plane magnetization of the bars. Changing the sign of their magnetization results in changes in the induced magnetic pinning potentials. By numerically solving the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations in a superconducting film with periodic arrays of zigzag-arranged magnetic bars, we revealed various flux dynamics regimes. In particular, we demonstrate flux pinning and flux flow, depending on the direction of the magnetization of the magnetic bars. Remarkably, the revealed different flux-motion regimes are associated with different mechanisms of vortex-antivortex dynamics. For example, we found that for an 'antiparallel' configuration of magnetic bars this dynamics involves a repeating vortex-antivortex generation and annihilation. We show that the depinning transition and the onset of flux flow can be manipulated by the magnetization of the bars and the geometry of the array. This provides an effective control of the depinning critical current that can be useful for possible fluxonics applications.

“Convergence of quasiparticle band structures of Si and Ge nanowires in the GW approximation and the validity of scissor shifts”. Peelaers H, Partoens B, Giantomassi M, Rangel T, Goossens E, Rignanese G-M, Gonze X, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 83, 045306 (2011). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.83.045306
Abstract: Starting from fully converged density-functional theory calculations, the quasiparticle corrections are calculated for different sized Si and Ge nanowires using the GW approximation. The effectiveness of recently developed techniques in speeding up the convergence of the quasiparticle calculations is demonstrated. The complete quasiparticle band structures are also obtained using an interpolation technique based on maximallylocalized Wannier functions. From the quasiparticle results, we assess the correctness of the commonly applied scissor-shift correction. Dispersion changes are observed, which are also reflected in changes in the effective band masses calculated taking into account quasiparticle corrections.

Abstract: We investigate the ground and excited states of a bipolar artificial molecule composed of two vertically coupled quantum dots containing different type of carriers-electrons and holes-in equilibrium. The approach based on exact diagonalization is used and reveals an intricate pattern of ground-state angular momentum switching and a rearrangement of approximate single-particle levels as a function of the interdot coupling strength.

Abstract: The effect of the electric field on an exciton confined in a pair of vertically coupled quantum dots is studied. We use a single-band approximation and a parabolic model potential. As a result of these idealizations, we obtain a numerically solvable model, which is used to describe the influence of the electron-hole interaction on the Stark effect for the lowest-energy photo luminescence lines. We show that for intermediate tunnel coupling between the dots this interaction leads to an anomalous Stark effect with an essential deviation of the recombination energy from the usual quadratic dependence on the electric field. Abstract: The magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconductors with nonzero thickness is studied using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We calculated the free energy, the expelled field, the total field profile, the Cooper-pair density, and the current density distribution. By putting a smaller superconducting disk or ring in the center of a larger ring, the properties change drastically. Extra ground-state transitions are found, where the total vorticity stays the same, but the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes by 1. Due to the magnetic coupling, the current in the external ring exhibits extra jumps at the transition fields where the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes. In this case, for certain temperatures, re-entrant behavior and switching on and off of the superconducting behavior of the rings are found as a function of the magnetic field. A H-T phase diagram is obtained for the situation where the inner ring has a higher critical temperature than the outer ring. An analytic expression for the magnetic coupling is obtained for thin rings and extreme type-II superconductors.

“Critical currents of the phase slip process in the presence of electromagnetic radiation : rectification for time asymmetric ac signal”. Vodolazov DY, Elmuradov A, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 72, 134509 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.72.064509
Abstract: We studied theoretically the effect of time symmetric and asymmetric electromagnetic (e.m.) radiation on the phase-slip process in superconducting wires in the regime where there is no stimulation of superconductivity. We found that for large amplitudes j(ac) of the symmetric ac signal the value of the lower critical current j(c1)(j(ac)) at which the voltage vanishes in the sample oscillates as a function of j(ac). The amplitude of these oscillations decays with increasing power of the ac signal, and we explain it either by the existence of a maximal current j(c3) beyond which no phase slips can be created or by a weak heat removal from the sample. Applying an asymmetric in time signal (with zero dc current) we show that it may lead to a finite voltage in the system (i.e., ratchet effect). At high enough frequencies the rectified voltage is directly proportional to the frequency of the applied e.m. radiation. These properties resemble in many aspects the behavior of a Josephson junction under e.m. radiation. The differences are mainly connected to the effect of the transport current on the magnitude of the order parameter.

Abstract: We investigate theoretically the charge and spin transport in quantum wires grown along different crystallographic planes in the presence of the Rashba spinorbit interaction (RSOI) and the Dresselhaus spinorbit interaction (DSOI). We find that changing the crystallographic planes leads to a variation of the anisotropy of the conductance due to a different interplay between the RSOI and DSOI, since the DSOI is induced by bulk inversion asymmetry, which is determined by crystallographic plane. This interplay depends sensitively on the crystallographic planes, and consequently leads to the anisotropic charge and spin transport in quantum wires embedded in different crystallographic planes.

Abstract: Vortex loops are generated by the inhomogeneous stray field of a magnetic dipole on top of a current-carrying mesoscopic superconductor. Cutting and recombination processes unfold under the applied drive, resulting in periodic voltage oscillations across the sample. We show that a direct and detectable consequence of the cutting and recombination of these vortex loops in the present setup is the onset of vortices at surfaces where they were absent prior to the application of the external current. The nonlinear dynamics of vortex loops is studied within the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory to describe the profound three-dimensional features of their time evolution.

Abstract: Cyclotron resonance (CR) of the electrons accumulated at sheets with heavy Si doping in InSb were observed using far infrared radiation. The angular dependence of the CR follows closely the 1/cos theta behaviour with some small deviations at high angles attributed to coupling between subbands. From the effective mass of the lowest subband, which is found to be 0.027m(o), the bottom of the lowest subband was determined to lie 125 meV below the Fermi level.

Abstract: The energy spectrum of a one-electron quantum dot doped with a single magnetic ion is studied in the presence of an external magnetic field. The allowed cyclotron resonance (CR) transitions are obtained together with their oscillator strength as a function of the magnetic field, the position of the magnetic ion, and the quantum dot confinement strength. With increasing magnetic field a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition is found, which results in clear signatures in the CR absorption. It leads to discontinuities in the transition energies and the oscillator strengths and to an increase in the number of allowed transitions.

Abstract: The cyclotron resonance energies, the corresponding oscillator strengths, and the cyclotron absorption spectrum for trilayer graphene are calculated for both ABA and ABC stacking. Abstract: The buckling of defected rectangular graphene nanoribbons when subjected to axial stress with supported boundary conditions is investigated using atomistic simulations. The buckling strain and mechanical stiffness of monolayer graphene decrease with the percentage of randomly distributed vacancies. The elasticity to plasticity transition in the stress-strain curve, at low percentage of vacancies, are found to be almost equal to the buckling strain thresholds and they decrease with increasing percentage of vacancies.
