Abstract |
In this work, a chemical kinetics study on methane activation for hydrogen production in a warm plasma, i.e., N-2 rotating gliding arc (RGA), was performed for the first time to get new insights into the underlying reaction mechanisms and pathways. A zero-dimensional chemical kinetics model was developed, which showed a good agreement with the experimental results in terms of the conversion of CH4 and product selectivities, allowing us to get a better understanding of the relative significance of various important species and their related reactions to the formation and loss of CH4, H-2, and C2H2 etc. An overall reaction scheme was obtained to provide a realistic picture of the plasma chemistry. The results reveal that the electrons and excited nitrogen species (mainly N-2(A)) play a dominant role in the initial dissociation of CH4. However, the H atom induced reaction CH4+ H -> CH3+ H-2, which has an enhanced reaction rate due to the high gas temperature (over 1200 K), is the major contributor to both the conversion of CH4 and H-2 production, with its relative contributions of > 90% and > 85%, respectively, when only considering the forward reactions. The coexistence and interaction of thermochemical and plasma chemical processes in the rotating gliding arc warm plasma significantly enhance the process performance. The formation of C-2 hydrocarbons follows a nearly one-way path of C2H6 -> C2H4 -> C2H2, explaining why the selectivities of C-2 products decreased in the order of C2H2 > C2H4 > C2H6. |

Abstract |
ZnS shelling of I-III-VI(2 )nanocrystals (NCs) invariably leads to blue-shifts in both the absorption and photoluminescence spectra. These observations imply that the outcome of ZnS shelling reactions on I-III-VI2 colloidal NCs results from a complex interplay between several processes taking place in solution, at the surface of, and within the seed NC. However, a fundamental understanding of the factors determining the balance between these different processes is still lacking. In this work, we address this need by investigating the impact of precursor reactivity, reaction temperature, and surface chemistry (due to the washing procedure) on the outcome of ZnS shelling reactions on CuInS2 NCs using a seeded growth approach. We demonstrate that low reaction temperatures (150 degrees C) favor etching, cation exchange, and alloying regardless of the precursors used. Heteroepitaxial shell overgrowth becomes the dominant process only if reactive S- and Zn-precursors (S-ODE/OLAM and ZnI2 ) and high reaction temperatures (210 degrees C) are used, although a certain degree of heterointerfacial alloying still occurs. Remarkably, the presence of residual acetate at the surface of CIS seed NCs washed with ethanol is shown to facilitate heteroepitaxial shell overgrowth, yielding for the first time CIS/ZnS core/shell NCs displaying red-shifted absorption spectra, in agreement with the spectral shifts expected for a type-I band alignment. The insights provided by this work pave the way toward the design of improved synthesis strategies to CIS/ZnS core/shell and alloy NCs with tailored elemental distribution profiles, allowing precise tuning of the optoelectronic properties of the resulting materials. |

Abstract |
By employing density functional theory-based methods, the structural, vibrational, electronic, and magnetic properties of monolayer -RuCl3 were investigated. It was demonstrated that ferromagnetic (FM) and zigzag-antiferromagnetic (ZZ-AFM) spin orders in the material have very close total energies with the latter being the ground state. We found that each Ru atom possesses a magnetic moment of 0.9 (B) and the material exhibits strong magnetic anisotropy. While both phases exhibit indirect gaps, the FM phase is a magnetic semiconductor and the ZZ-AFM phase is a non-magnetic semiconductor. The structural stability of the material was confirmed by phonon calculations. Moreover, dynamical analysis revealed that the magnetic order in the material can be monitored via Raman measurements of the crystal structure. In addition, the magnetic ground state of the material changes from ZZ-AFM to FM upon certain applied strains. Valence and conduction band-edges of the material vary considerably under in-plane strains. Owing to the stable lattice structure and unique and controllable magnetic properties, monolayer -RuCl3 is a promising material in nanoscale device applications. |

Abstract |
Polycrystalline samples of La3Ni2NbO9 and La3Ni2TaO9 have been characterised by X-ray and neutron diffraction, electron microscopy, magnetometry and muon spin relaxation (mu SR); the latter technique was also applied to La3Ni2SbO9. On the length scale of a neutron diffraction experiment, the six-coordinate sites of the monoclinic perovskite structure are occupied in a 1:1 ordered manner by Ni and a random 1/3Ni/2/3B' mixture. Electron microscopy demonstrated that this 1:1 ordering is maintained over microscopic distances, although diffuse scattering indicative of short-range ordering on the mixed site was observed. No magnetic Bragg scattering was observed in neutron diffraction patterns collected from La3Ni2B'O-9 (B' = Nb or Ta) at 5 K although in each case mu SR identified the presence of static spins below 30 K. Magnetometry showed that La3Ni2NbO9 behaves as a spin glass below 29 K but significant short-range interactions are present in La3Ni2NbO9 below 85 K. The contrasting properties of these compounds are discussed in terms of their microstructure. |

Abstract |
La1-yCayFe0.5+x(Mg,Mo)(0.5-x)O3-delta oxides with the orthorhombic GdFeO3-type perovskite structure have been synthesized at 1573 K. Transmission electron microscopy study for selected samples shows the coexistence of domains of perovskite phases with ordered and disordered B-cations. Mossbauer spectroscopy studies performed at 300 K and 573 K show that while compositions with low Ca-content (La0.55Ca0.45Fe0.5Mg0.2625Mo0.2375O3-delta and La0.5Ca0.5Fe0.6Mg0.175Mo0.225O3-delta) are nearly oxygen stoichiometric, La0.2Ca0.8Fe0.5Mg0.2625Mo0.2375O3-delta is oxygen deficient with delta approximate to 0.15. Oxides are stable in reducing atmosphere (Ar/H-2, 8%) at 1173 K for 12 h. No additional phases have been observed at XRPD patterns of all studied perovskites and Ce1-xGdxO2-x/2 electrolyte mixtures treated at 1173-1373K, while Fe-rich compositions (x >= 0.1) react with Zr1-xYxO2-x/2 electrolyte above 1273 K. Dilatometry studies reveal that all samples show rather low thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) in air of 11.4-12.7 ppm K-1. In reducing atmosphere their TECs were found to increase up to 12.1-15.4 ppm K-1 due to chemical expansion effect. High-temperature electrical conductivity measurements in air and Ar/H-2 atmosphere show that the highest conductivity is observed for Fe- and Ca-rich compositions. Moderate values of electrical conductivity and TEC together with stability towards chemical interaction with typical SOFC electrolytes make novel Fe-containing perovskites promising electrode materials for symmetrical solid oxide fuel cell. |

Abstract |
MXenes are the newest class of two-dimensional (2D) materials, and they offer great potential in a wide range of applications including electronic devices, sensors, and thermoelectric and energy storage materials. In this work, we combined the outstanding electrical conductivity, that is essential for battery applications, of graphene with MXene monolayers (M2CX2 where M = Sc, Ti, V and X = OH, O) to explore its potential in Li battery applications. Through first principles calculations, we determined the stable stacking configurations of M2CX2/graphene bilayer heterostructures and their Li atom intercalation by calculating the Li binding energy, diffusion barrier and voltage. We found that: (1) for the ground state stacking, the interlayer binding is strong, yet the interlayer friction is small; (2) Li binds more strongly to the O-terminated monolayer, bilayer and heterostructure MXene systems when compared with the OHterminated MXenes due to the H+ induced repulsion to the Li atoms. The binding energy of Li decreases as the Li concentration increases due to enhanced repulsive interaction between the positively charged Li ions; (3) Ti2CO2/graphene and V2CO2/graphene heterostructures exhibit large Li atom binding energies making them the most promising candidates for battery applications. When fully loaded with Li atoms, the binding energy is -1.43 eV per Li atom and -1.78 eV per Li atom for Ti2CO2/graphene and V2CO2/graphene, respectively. These two heterostructures exhibit a nice compromise between storage capacity and kinetics. For example, the diffusion barrier of Li in Ti2CO2/graphene is around 0.3 eV which is comparable to that of graphite. Additionally, the calculated average voltages are 1.49 V and 1.93 V for Ti2CO2/graphene and V2CO2/graphene structures, respectively; (4) a small change in the in-plane lattice parameters (<1%), interatomic bond lengths and interlayer distances (<0.5 angstrom) proves the stability of the heterostructures against Li intercalation, and the impending phase separation into constituent layers and capacity fading during charge-discharge cycles in real battery applications; (5) as compared to bare M2CX2 bilayers, M2CX2/graphene heterostructures have lower molecular mass, offering high storage capacity; (6) the presence of graphene ensures good electrical conductivity that is essential for battery applications. Given these advantages, Ti2CO2/graphene and V2CO2/graphene heterostructures are predicted to be promising for lithium-ion battery applications. |

Abstract |
There is currently a growing interest in the realisation and optimization of hybrid plasma/catalyst systems for a multitude of applications, ranging from nanotechnology to environmental chemistry. In spite of this interest, there is, however, a lack in fundamental understanding of the underlying processes in such systems. While a lot of experimental research is already being carried out to gain this understanding, only recently the first simulations have appeared in the literature. In this contribution, an overview is presented on atomic scale simulations of plasma catalytic processes as carried out in our group. In particular, this contribution focusses on plasma-assisted catalyzed carbon nanostructure growth, and plasma catalysis for greenhouse gas conversion. Attention is paid to what can routinely be done, and where challenges persist. |

<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('A new synthetic approach based on chemical transport reactions has been introduced to obtain the Nowotny chimney ladder phase Fe2Ge3 in the form of single crystals and polycrystalline powders. The single crystals possess the stoichiometric composition and the commensurate chimney ladder structure of the Ru2Sn3 type in contrast to the polycrystalline samples that are characterized by a complex microstructure. In compliance with the 18-n electron counting rule formulated for T-E intermetallics, electronic structure calculations reveal a narrow-gap semiconducting behavior of Fe2Ge3 favorable for high thermoelectric performance. Measurements of transport and thermoelectric properties performed on the polycrystalline samples confirm the formation of a narrow band gap of similar to 30 meV and reveal high absolute values of the Seebeck coefficient at elevated temperatures. Low glass-like thermal conductivity is observed in a wide temperature range that might be caused by the underlying complex microstructure.')); |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('Li-rich NMC are considered nowadays as one of the most promising candidates for high energy density cathodes. One significant challenge is nested in adjusting their synthesis conditions to reach optimum electrochemical performance, but no consensus has been reached yet on the ideal synthesis protocol. Herein, we revisited the elaboration of Li-rich NMC electrodes by focusing on the science involved through each synthesis steps using carbonate Ni0.1625Mn0.675Co0.1625CO3 precursor coprecipitation combined with solid state synthesis. We demonstrated the effect of precursors concentration on the kinetics of the precipitation reaction and provided clues to obtain spherically agglomerated NMC carbonates of different sizes. Moreover, we highlighted the strong impact of the Li2CO3/NMC carbonate ratio on the morphology and particles size of Li-rich NMC and subsequently on their electrochemical performance. Ratio of 1.35 was found to reproducibly give the best performance with namely a first discharge capacity of 269 mAh g(-1) and capacity retention of 89.6% after 100 cycles. We hope that our results, which reveal how particle size, morphology, and phase composition affect the materials electrochemical performance, will help in reconciling literature data while providing valuable fundamental information for up scaling approaches.')); |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('By depositing ceria on the surface of yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nanocrystals and further activation under high-temperature reducing conditions, a 13% mol. CeO2/YSZ catalyst structured as subnanometer thick, pyrochlore-type, ceria-zirconia islands has been prepared. This nanostructured catalyst depicts not only high oxygen storage capacity (OSC) values but, more importantly, an outstandingly stable redox response upon oxidation and reduction treatments at very high temperatures, above 1000 degrees C. This behavior largely improves that observed on conventional ceria-zirconia solid solutions, not only of the same composition but also of those with much higher molar cerium contents. Advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM-XEDS) studies have revealed as key not only to detect the actual state of the lanthanide in this novel nanocatalyst but also to rationalize its unusual resistance to redox deactivation at very high temperatures. In particular, high-resolution X-ray dispersive energy studies have revealed the presence of unique bilayer ceria islands on top of the surface of YSZ nanocrystals, which remain at surface positions upon oxidation and reduction treatments up to 1000 degrees C. Diffusion of ceria into the bulk of these crystallites upon oxidation at 1100 degrees C irreversibly deteriorates both the reducibility and OSC of this nanostructured catalyst.')); |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('To realize spintronic devices based on topological insulators (TIs), well-defined interfaces between magnetic metals and TIs are required. Here, we characterize atomically precisely the interface between the 3d transition metal Fe and the TI Bi2Te3 at different stages of its formation. Using photoelectron diffraction and holography, we show that after deposition of up to 3 monolayers Fe on Bi2Te3 at room temperature, the Fe atoms are ordered at the interface despite the surface disorder revealed by our scanning-tunneling microscopy images. We find that Fe occupies two different sites: a hollow adatom deeply relaxed into the Bi2Te3 quintuple layers and an interstitial atom between the third (Te) and fourth (Bi) atomic layers. For both sites, our core-level photoemission spectra and density-functional theory calculations demonstrate simultaneous chemical bonding of Fe to both Te and Bi atoms. We further show that upon deposition of Fe up to a thickness of 20 nm, the Fe atoms penetrate deeper into the bulk forming a 2-5 nm interface layer containing FeTe. In addition, excessive Bi is pushed down into the bulk of Bi2Te3 leading to the formation of septuple layers of Bi3Te4 within a distance of similar to 25 nm from the interface. Controlling the magnetic properties of the complex interface structures revealed by our work will be of critical importance when optimizing the efficiency of spin injection in TI-based devices.')); |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('The colloidal synthesis and assembly of semiconductor nanowires continues to attract a great deal of interest. Herein, we describe the single-step ligand-mediated synthesis of single-crystalline CsPbBr3 perovskite nanowires (NWs) directly from the precursor powders. Studies of the reaction process and the morphological evolution revealed that the initially formed CsPbBr3 nanocubes are transformed into NWs through an oriented-attachment mechanism. The optical properties of the NWs can be tuned across the entire visible range by varying the halide (Cl, Br, and I) composition through subsequent halide ion exchange. Single-particle studies showed that these NWs exhibit strongly polarized emission with a polarization anisotropy of 0.36. More importantly, the NWs can self-assemble in a quasi-oriented fashion at an air/liquid interface. This process should also be easily applicable to perovskite nanocrystals of different morphologies for their integration into nanoscale optoelectronic devices.')); |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('Solid electrolytes are important materials with a wide range of technological applications. This work reports the crystal structure and electrical properties of a new solid electrolyte Na9Al(MoO4)(6). The monoclinic Na9Al(MoO4)(6) consists of isolated polyhedral, [Al(MoO4)(6)](9-) clusters composed of a central AlO6 octahedron sharing vertices with six MoO4 tetrahedra to form a three-dimensional framework. The AlO6 octahedron also shares edges with one NalO(6) octahedron and two Na2O(6) octahedra. Na3-Na5 atoms are located in the framework cavities. The structure is related to that of sodium ion conductor II-Na3Fe2(AsO4)(3). High-temperature conductivity measurements revealed that the conductivity (sigma) of Na9Al(MoO4)(6) at 803 K equals 1.63 X 10(-2) S cm(-1). The temperature behavior of the Na-23 and Al-27 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation rates of the Na-23 nuclei indicate the presence of fast Na+ ion diffusion in the studied compound. At T\u003C490 K, diffusion occurs by means of Na+ ion jumps exclusively through the sublattice of Na3-Na5 positions, whereas Na1 and Na2 become involved in the diffusion processes (through chemical exchange with the Na3-Na5 sublattice) only at higher temperatures.')); |

Abstract |
The diverse pharmacological properties of the diaryltriazenes have sparked the interest to investigate their potential to be repurposed as antitubercular drug candidates. In an attempt to improve the antitubercular activity of a previously constructed diaryltriazene library, eight new halogenated nitroaromatic triazenides were synthesized and underwent biological evaluation. The potency of the series was confirmed against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis lab strain H37Ra, and for the most potent derivative, we observed a minimal inhibitory concentration of 0.85 μm. The potency of the triazenide derivatives against M. tuberculosis H37Ra was found to be highly dependent on the nature of the halogenated phenyl substituent and less dependent on cationic species used for the preparation of the salts. Although the inhibitory concentration against J774A.1 macrophages was observed at 3.08 μm, the cellular toxicity was not mediated by the generation of nitroxide intermediate as confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, whereas no in vitro mutagenicity could be observed for the new halogenated nitroaromatic triazenides when a trifluoromethyl substituent was present on both the aryl moieties. |

Abstract |
Sodium ion battery technology is gradually advancing and can be viewed as a viable alternative to lithium ion batteries in niche applications. One of the promising positive electrode candidates is P2 type layered sodium transition metal oxide, which offers attractive sodium ion conductivity. However, the reversible capacity of P2 phases is limited by the inability to directly synthesize stoichiometric compounds with a sodium to transition metal ratio equal to 1. To alleviate this issue, we report herein the in situ synthesis of P2-NaxO2 (x <= 0.7, M = transition metal ions)-Na2CO3 composites. We find that sodium carbonate acts as a sacrificial salt, providing Na+ ion to increase the reversible capacity of the P2 phase in sodium ion full cells, and also as a useful additive that stabilizes the formation of P2 over competing P3 phases. We offer a new phase diagram for tuning the synthesis of the P2 phase under various experimental conditions and demonstrate, by in situ XRD analysis, the role of Na2CO3 as a sodium reservoir in full sodium ion cells. These results provide insights into the practical use of P2 layered materials and can be extended to a variety of other layered phases. |

Abstract |
Recent findings revealed that surface oxygen can participate in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for the most active catalysts, which eventually triggers a new mechanism for which the deprotonation of surface intermediates limits the OER activity. We propose in this work a “dual strategy” in which tuning the electronic properties of the oxide, such as La1-xSrxCoO3-delta, can be dissociated from the use of surface functionalization with phosphate ion groups (P-i) that enhances the interfacial proton transfer. Results show that the P-i functionalized La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-delta gives rise to a significant enhancement of the OER activity when compared to La0.5Sr0.5Co3-delta and LaCoO3. We further demonstrate that the P-i surface functionalization selectivity enhances the activity when the OER kinetics is limited by the proton transfer. Finally, this work suggests that tuning the catalytic activity by such a “dual approach” may be a new and largely unexplored avenue for the design of novel high-performance catalysts. |

Abstract |
Blue-colored molybdenum oxide nitrides of the Mo-2(O,N,square)(5) type were synthesized by direct nitridation of commercially available molybdenum trioxide with a mixture of gaseous ammonia and oxygen. Chemical composition, crystal structure, and stability of the obtained and hitherto unknown compounds are studied extensively. The average oxidation state of +5 for molybdenum is proven by Mo K near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy; the magnetic behavior is in agreement with compounds exhibiting (MoO6)-O-v units. The new materials are stable up to similar to 773 K in an inert gas atmosphere. At higher temperatures, decomposition is observed. X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveal the structure to be related to VNb9O24.9-type phases, however, with severe disorder hampering full structure determination. Still, the results demonstrate the possibility of a future synthesis of the potential binary oxide Mo2O5. On the basis of these findings, a tentative suggestion on the crystal structure of the potential compound Mo2O5, backed by electronic-structure and phonon calculations from first principles, is given. |

Abstract |
A polycrystalline sample of Ba3Fe2TeO9 having the 6H perovskite structure has been prepared in a solid-state reaction and studied by a combination of electron microscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction. Partial ordering of Fe3+ and Te6+ cations occurs over the six-coordinate sites; the corner-sharing octahedra are predominantly occupied by the former and the face-sharing octahedra by a 1:1 mixture of the two. On cooling through the temperature range 18 < T/K < 295 an increasing number of spins join an antiferromagnetic backbone running through the structure while the remainder show complex relaxation effects. At 3 K an antiferromagnetic phase and a spin glass coexist. |

Abstract |
Recently, Sr-doped LaCrO3 has been experimentally introduced as a new p-type transparent conducting oxide. It is demonstrated that substituting Sr for La results in inducing p-type conductivity in LaCrO3. Performing first principles calculations we study the electronic structure and formation energy of various point defects in LaCrO3. Our results for the formation energies show that in addition to Sr, two more divalent defects, Ca and Ba, substituting for La in LaCrO3, behave as shallow acceptors in line with previous experimental reports. We further demonstrate that under oxygen-poor growth conditions, these shallow acceptors will be compensated by intrinsic donor-like defects (an oxygen vacancy and Cr on an oxygen site), but in the oxygen-rich growth regime the shallow acceptors have the lowest formation energies between all considered defects and will lead to p-type conductivity. |

Abstract |
Bimetallic nanoparticles play a crucial role in various applications. A better understanding of their properties would facilitate these applications and possibly even enable chirality-specific growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). We here examine the stabilities of NiFe, NiGa, and FeGa nanoparticles and the effect of carbon dissolved in NiFe nanoparticles through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Born Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulations. We establish that nanoparticles with more Fe in the core and more Ga on the surface are more stable and compare these results with well-known properties such as surface energy and atom size. Furthermore, we find that the nanoparticles become more stable with increasing carbon content, both at 0 K and at 700 K. These results provide a basis for further research into the chirality-specific growth of CNT's. |

Abstract |
To gain insight into the nature of the adhesion mechanism between hydroxyapatite (HA) and rutile (rTiO(2)), the mutual affinity between their surfaces was systematically studied using density functional theory (DFT). We calculated both bulk and surface properties of HA and rTiO(2), and explored the interfacial bonding mechanism of amorphous HA (aHA) surface onto amorphous as well as stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric crystalline rTiO(2). Formation energies of bridging and subbridging oxygen vacancies considered in the rTiO(2)(110) surface were evaluated and compared with other theoretical and experimental results. The interfacial interaction was evaluated through the work of adhesion. For the aHA/rTiO(2)(110) interfaces, the work of adhesion is found to depend strongly on the chemical environment of the rTiO(2)(110) surface. Electronic analysis indicates that the charge transfer is very small in the case of interface formation between aHA and crystalline rTiO(2)(110). In contrast, significant charge transfer occurs between aHA and amorphous rTiO(2) (aTiO(2)) slabs during the formation of the interface. Charge density difference (CDD) analysis indicates that the dominant interactions in the interface have significant covalent character, and in particular the Ti-O and Ca-O bonds. Thus, the obtained results reveal that the aHA/aTiO(2) interface shows a more preferable interaction and is thermodynamically more stable than other interfaces. These results are particularly important for improving the long-term stability of HA-based implants. |

Abstract |
Besides providing sufficient solubility, branched alkyl chains also affect the film-forming and packing properties of organic semiconductors. In order to avoid steric hindrance as it is present in wide-spread alkyl chains comprising a branching point position at the C2-position, i.e., 2-ethylhexyl, the branching point can be moved away from the pi-conjugated backbone. In this report, we study the influence of the modification of the branching point position from the C2-position in 2-hexyldecylamine (1) to the C4-position in 4-hexyldecylamine (2) connected to the central dithieno[3,2-b: 2', 3'-d] pyrrole (DTP) moiety in a well-studied A-D-A oligothiophene on the optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance in solution- processed bulk heterojunction solar cells (BHJSCs) with [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the acceptor material. Post-treatment of the photoactive layers is performed via solvent vapor annealing (SVA) in order to improve the film microstructure of the bulk heterojunction. The time evolution of nanoscale morphological changes is followed by combining scanning transmission electron microscopy with low-energy-loss spectroscopic imaging (STEM-SI), solid-state absorption spectroscopy, and two-dimensional grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (2D-GIXRD). Our results show an improvement of the photovoltaic performance that is dependent on the branching point position in the donor oligomer. Optical spacers are utilized to increase light absorption inside the co-oligomer 2-based BHJSCs leading to increased power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 8.2% when compared to the corresponding co-oligomer 1-based devices. A STEM-SI analysis of the respective device cross-sections of active layers containing 1 and 2 as donor materials indeed reveals significant differences in their respective active layer morphologies. |

Abstract |
The adsorption and diffusion of Li, Na, K and Ca atoms on a Mo2C monolayer are systematically investigated by using first principles methods. We found that the considered metal atoms are strongly bound to the Mo2C monolayer. However, the adsorption energies of these alkali and earth alkali elements decrease as the coverage increases due to the enhanced repulsion between the metal ions. We predict a significant charge transfer from the ad-atoms to the Mo2C monolayer, which indicates clearly the cationic state of the metal atoms. The metallic character of both pristine and doped Mo2C ensures a good electronic conduction that is essential for an optimal anode material. Low migration energy barriers are predicted as small as 43 meV for Li, 19 meV for Na and 15 meV for K, which result in the very fast diffusion of these atoms on Mo2C. For Mo2C, we found a storage capacity larger than 400 mA h g(-1) by the inclusion of multilayer adsorption. Mo2C expands slightly upon deposition of Li and Na even at high concentrations, which ensures the good cyclic stability of the atomic layer. The calculated average voltage of 0.68 V for Li and 0.30 V for Na ions makes Mo2C attractive for low charging voltage applications. |

Abstract |
The nature of the low-temperature photochemical assisted formation process of ferroelectric lead titanate (PbTiO3) films is studied in the present work. Films are obtained by the deposition of an aqueous solution containing citric acid based (citrato) metal ion complexes with intrinsic UV activity. This UV activity is crucial for the aqueous photochemical solution deposition (aqueous PCSD) route being used. UV irradiation enhances the early decomposition of organics and results in improved electrical properties for the crystalline oxide film, even if the film is crystallized at low temperature. GATR-FTIR shows that UV irradiation promotes the decomposition of organic precursor components, resulting in homogeneous films if applied in the right temperature window during film processing. The organic content, morphology and crystallinity of the irradiated films, achieved at different processing atmospheres and temperatures, is studied and eventually correlated to the functional behavior of the obtained films. This is an important issue, as crystalline films obtained at low temperatures often lack ferroelectric responses. In this work, the film prepared in pure oxygen at the very low temperature of 400 degrees C and after an optimized UV treatment presents a significant remanent polarization value of P-r = 8.8 mu C cm(-2). This value is attributed to the better crystallinity, the larger grain size and the reduced porosity obtained thanks to the early film crystallization effectively achieved through the UV treatment in oxygen. Abstract |
Nano-sized nitrogen-doped carbon spheres are synthesized from two cheap, readily available and sustainable precursors: tannic acid and urea. In combination with a polymer structuring agent, nitrogen content, sphere size and the surface (up to 400 m(2)g(-1)) can be conveniently tuned by the precursor ratio, temperature and structuring agent content. Because the chosen precursors allow simple oven synthesis and avoid harsh conditions, this carbon nanosphere platform offers a more sustainable alternative to classical soots, for example, as printing pigments or conduction soots. The carbon spheres are demonstrated to be a promising as conductive carbon additive in anode materials for lithium ion batteries. |

Abstract |
Polycrystalline samples of CaLn(2)Ni(2)WO(9) (Ln=La, Pr, Nd) have been synthesized and characterised by a combination of X-ray and neutron diffraction, electron microscopy and magnetometry. Each composition adopts a perovskite-like structure with a similar to 5.50, b similar to 5.56, c similar to 7.78 angstrom beta similar to 90.1 degrees in space group P2(1)/n. Of the two crystallographically distinct six-coordinate sites, one is occupied entirely (Ln=Pr) or predominantly (Ln=La, Nd) by Ni2+ and the other by Ni2+ and W6+ in a ratio of approximately 1:2. None of the compounds shows long-range magnetic order at 5 K. The magnetometry data show that the magnetic moments of the Ni2+ cations form a spin glass below 30 K in each case. The Pr3+ moments in CaPr2Ni2WO9 also freeze but the Nd3+ moments in CaNd2Ni2WO9 do not. This behaviour is contrasted with that observed in other (A,A')B2B'O-9 perovskites. |
