Abstract: Pinning of magnetic-field-induced Wigner molecules (WMs) confined in parabolic two-dimensional quantum dots by a charged defect is studied by an exact diagonalization approach. We found a re-entrant pinning of the WMs as a function of the magnetic field, a magnetic-field-induced re-orientation of the WMs and a qualitatively different pinning behaviour in the presence of a positive and negative Coulomb impurity.

Abstract: We study single- and two-electron parabolic quantum dots in the presence of linear Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit interactions. Contributions of both types of spin-orbit coupling are investigated in the context of the spin polarization of the system at high magnetic fields. We demonstrate that for negative Landé factors the effect of the Dresselhaus coupling is suppressed at high magnetic field, which for structures without inversion asymmetry leads to a completely spin-polarized system and a strict antisymmetry of the wave functions with respect to the interchange of spatial-electron coordinates. For negative Landé factor the Rashba coupling is preserved at high field and consequently the spin polarization of the systems as well as the spatial antisymmetry of the two-electron wave function remain approximate.

Abstract: Few-electron systems confined in two-dimensional parabolic quantum dots at high magnetic fields are studied by the Hartree-Fock (HF) and exact diagoiialization methods. A generalized multicenter Gaussian basis is proposed in the HF method. A comparison of the HF and exact, results allows as to discuss the relevance of the symmetry of the charge density distribution for the accuracy of the HF method. It is shown that the energy estimates obtained with the broken-symmetry HF wave functions become exact in the infinite magnetic-field limit. In this limit the charge density of the broken-symmetry solution call be identified with the classical charge distribution.

Abstract: Several specimens of Libyan desert glass (LDG), an enigmatic natural glass from Egypt, were subjected to investigation by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The spectra of inclusions inside the LDG samples were successfully measured through the layers of glass and the mineral species were identified on this basis. The presence of cristobalite as typical for high-temperature melt products was confirmed, together with co-existing quartz. TiO2 was determined in two polymorphic species rutile and anatase. Micro-Raman spectroscopy proved also the presence of minerals unusual for high-temperature glasses such as anhydrite and aragonite.

Abstract: A crucial property for implants is their biocompatibility. To ensure biocompatibility, thin coatings of hydroxyapatite (HA) are deposited on the actual implant. In this study, we investigate the effects of the addition of silicate anions to the structure of hydroxyapatite coatings on their adhesion strength via a scratch test and ab initio calculations. We find that both the grain size and adhesion strength decrease with the increase in the silicon content in the HA coating (SiHA). The increase in the silicon content to 1.2 % in the HA coating leads to a decrease in the average crystallite size from 28 to 21 nm, and in the case of 4.6 %, it leads to the formation of an amorphous or nanocrystalline film. The decreases in the grain and crystallite sizes lead to peeling and destruction of the coating from the titanium substrate at lower loads. Further, our ab initio simulations demonstrate an increased number of molecular bonds at the amorphous SiHA-TiO2 interface. However, the experimental results revealed that the structure and grain size have more pronounced effects on the adhesion strength of the coatings. In conclusion, based on the results of the ab initio simulations and the experimental results, we suggest that the presence of Si in the form of silicate ions in the HA coating has a significant impact on the structure, grain size, and number of molecular bonds at the interface and on the adhesion strength of the SiHA coating to the titanium substrate.

“One-pot synthesis of carbon-coated nanostructured iron oxide on few-layer graphene for lithium-ion batteries”. Sun Z, Madej E, Wiktor, Sinev I, Fischer RA, Van Tendeloo G, Muhler M, Schuhmann W, Ventosa E, Chemistry: a European journal 21, 16154 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1002/chem.201501935
Abstract: Nanostructure engineering has been demonstrated to improve the electrochemical performance of iron oxide based electrodes in Li-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the synthesis of advanced functional materials often requires multiple steps. Herein, we present a facile one-pot synthesis of carbon-coated nanostructured iron oxide on few-layer graphene through high-pressure pyrolysis of ferrocene in the presence of pristine graphene. The ferrocene precursor supplies both iron and carbon to form the carbon-coated iron oxide, while the graphene acts as a high-surface-area anchor to achieve small metal oxide nanoparticles. When evaluated as a negative-electrode material for LIBs, our composite showed improved electrochemical performance compared to commercial iron oxide nanopowders, especially at fast charge/discharge rates.

Abstract: Two-dimensional crystals with angstrom-scale pores are widely considered as candidates for a next generation of molecular separation technologies aiming to provide extreme, exponentially large selectivity combined with high flow rates. No such pores have been demonstrated experimentally. Here we study gas transport through individual graphene pores created by low intensity exposure to low kV electrons. Helium and hydrogen permeate easily through these pores whereas larger species such as xenon and methane are practically blocked. Permeating gases experience activation barriers that increase quadratically with molecules' kinetic diameter, and the effective diameter of the created pores is estimated as similar to 2 angstroms, about one missing carbon ring. Our work reveals stringent conditions for achieving the long sought-after exponential selectivity using porous two-dimensional membranes and suggests limits on their possible performance. Two-dimensional membranes with angstrom-sized pores are predicted to combine high permeability with exceptional selectivity, but experimental demonstration has been challenging. Here the authors realize angstrom-sized pores in monolayer graphene and demonstrate gas transport with activation barriers increasing quadratically with the molecular kinetic diameter.

“An oxysulfate Fe2O(SO4)2 electrode for sustainable Li-based batteries”. Sun M, Rousse G, Abakumov AM, Van Tendeloo G, Sougrati M-T, Courty M, Doublet M-L, Tarascon J-M, Journal of the American Chemical Society 136, 12658 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1021/ja505268y
Abstract: High-performing Fe-based electrodes for Li-based batteries are eagerly pursued because of the abundance and environmental benignity of iron, with especially great interest in polyanionic compounds because of their flexibility in tuning the Fe3+/Fe2+ redox potential. We report herein the synthesis and structure of a new Fe-based oxysulfate phase, Fe2O(SO4)(2), made at low temperature from abundant elements, which electrochemically reacts with nearly 1.6 Li atoms at an average voltage of 3.0 V versus Li+/Li, leading to a sustained reversible capacity of similar to 125 mAh/g. The Li insertiondeinsertion process, the first ever reported in any oxysulfate, entails complex phase transformations associated with the position of iron within the FeO6 octahedra. This finding opens a new path worth exploring in the quest for new positive electrode materials.

“Li2Cu2O(SO4)2: a possible electrode for sustainable Li-based batteries showing a 4.7 V redox activity vs Li+/Li0”. Sun M, Rousse G, Abakumov AM, Saubanere M, Doublet M-L, Rodriguez-Carvajal J, Van Tendeloo G, Tarascon J-M, Chemistry of materials 27, 3077 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1021/acs.chemmater.5b00588
Abstract: Li-ion batteries rely on the use of insertion positive electrodes with performances scaling with the redox potential of the 31) metals accompanying Liuptake/removal. Although not commonly studied, the Cu2+/Cu3+ redox potential has been predicted from theoretical calculations to possibly offer a high operating voltage redox couple. We herein report the synthesis and crystal structure of a hitherto-unknown oxysulfate phase, Li2Cu2O(SO4)(2), which contains infinite edgesharing CuO4 chains and presents attractive electrochemical redox activity with respect to Li+/Li, namely amphoteric characteristics. Li2Cu2O(SO4)(2) shows redox activity at 4.7 V vs Li+/Li corresponding to the oxidation of Cu2+ to Cu3+ enlisting ligand holes and associated with the reversible uptake-removal of 0.3 Li. Upon reduction, this compound reversibly uptakes similar to 2 Li at an average potential of about 2.5 V vs Li+/Li, associated with the Cu2+/Cu+ redox couple. The mechanism of the reactivity upon reduction is discussed in detail, with particular attention to the occasional appearance of an oscillation wave in the discharge profile. Our work demonstrates that Cu-based compounds can indeed be fertile scientific ground in the search for new high-energy-density electrodes.

Abstract: As a size- and shape-selective catalyst, zeolites are widely used in petroleum and fine-chemicals processing. However, their small micropores severely hinder molecular diffusion and are sensitive to coke formation. Hierarchically porous zeolite single crystals with fully interconnected, ordered, and tunable multimodal porosity at macro-, meso-, and microlength scale, like in leaves, offer the ideal solution. However, their synthesis remains highly challenging. Here, we report a versatile confined zeolite crystallization process to achieve these superior properties. Such zeolite single crystals lead to significantly improved mass transport properties by shortening the diffusion length while maintaining shape-selective properties, endowing them with a high efficiency of zeolite crystals, enhanced catalytic activities and lifetime, highly reduced coke formation, and reduced deactivation rate in bulky-molecule reactions and methanol-to-olefins process. Their industrial utilization can lead to the design of innovative and intensified reactors and processes with highly enhanced efficiency and minimum energy consumption.

“Boron structure evolution in magnetic Cr₂O₃, thin films”. Sun C, Street M, Zhang C, Van Tendeloo G, Zhao W, Zhang Q, Materials Today Physics 27, 100753 (2022). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.MTPHYS.2022.100753
Abstract: B substituting O in antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 is known to increase the Ne ' el temperature, whereas the actual B dopant site and the corresponding functionality remains unclear due to the complicated local structure. Herein, A combination of electron energy loss spectroscopy and first-principles calculations were used to unveil B local structures in B doped Cr2O3 thin films. B was found to form either magnetic active BCr4 tetrahedra or various inactive BO3 triangles in the Cr2O3 lattice, with a* and z* bonds exhibiting unique spectral features. Identification of BO3 triangles was achieved by changing the electron momentum transfer to manipulate the differential cross section for the 1s-z* and 1s-a* transitions. Modeling the experimental spectra as a linear combination of simulated B K edges reproduces the experimental z* / a* ratios for 15-42% of the B occupying the active BCr4 structure. This result is further supported by first-principles based thermodynamic calculations.

“Light regime and growth phase affect the microalgal production of protein quantity and quality with Dunaliella salina”. Sui Y, Muys M, Vermeir P, D'Adamo S, Vlaeminck SE, Bioresource technology 275, 145 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.BIORTECH.2018.12.046
Abstract: The microalga Dunaliella salina has been widely studied for carotenogenesis, yet its protein production for human nutrition has rarely been reported. This study unveils the effects of growth phase and light regime on protein and essential amino acid (EAA) levels in D. salina. Cultivation under 24-h continuous light was compared to 12-h/12-h light/dark cycle. The essential amino acid index (EAAI) of D. salina showed accumulating trends up to 1.53 in the stationary phase, surpassing FAO/WHO standard for human nutrition. Light/dark conditions inferred a higher light-usage efficiency, yielding 597% higher protein and 1828% higher EAA mass on light energy throughout the growth, accompanied by 138% faster growth during the light phase of the light/dark cycle, compared to continuous light. The findings revealed D. salina to be especially suitable for high-quality protein production, particularly grown under light/dark conditions, with nitrogen limitation as possible trigger, and harvested in the stationary phase.

“Enhancement of co-production of nutritional protein and carotenoids in Dunaliella salina using a two-phase cultivation assisted by nitrogen level and light intensity”. Sui Y, Muys M, Van de Waal D, D'Adamo S, Vermeir P, Fernandes TV, Vlaeminck SE, Bioresource technology 287, 121398 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.BIORTECH.2019.121398
Abstract: Microalga Dunaliella salina is known for its carotenogenesis. At the same time, it can also produce high-quality protein. The optimal conditions for D. salina to co-produce intracellular pools of both compounds, however, are yet unknown. This study investigated a two-phase cultivation strategy to optimize combined high-quality protein and carotenoid production of D. salina. In phase-one, a gradient of nitrogen concentrations was tested. In phase-two, effects of nitrogen pulse and high illumination were tested. Results reveal optimized protein quantity, quality (expressed as essential amino acid index EAAI) and carotenoids content in a two-phase cultivation, where short nitrogen starvation in phase-one was followed by high illumination during phase-two. Adopting this strategy, productivities of protein, EAA and carotenoids reached 22, 7 and 3 mg/L/d, respectively, with an EAAI of 1.1. The quality of this biomass surpasses FAO/WHO standard for human nutrition, and the observed level of β-carotene presents high antioxidant pro-vitamin A activity.

“Harvesting time and biomass composition affect the economics of microalgae production”. Sui Y, Jiang Y, Moretti M, Vlaeminck SE, Journal Of Cleaner Production 259, 120782 (2020). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JCLEPRO.2020.120782
Abstract: Cost simulations provide a strong tool to render the production of microalgae economically viable. This study evaluated the unexplored effect of harvesting time and the corresponding microalgal biomass composition on the overall production cost, under both continuous light and light/dark regime using techno-economic analysis (TEA). At the same time, the TEA gives evidence that a novel product “proteinaceous salt” from Dunaliella microalgae production is a promising high-value product for commercialization with profitability. The optimum production scenario is to employ natural light/dark regime and harvest microalgal biomass around late exponential phase, obtaining the minimum production cost of 11 €/kg and a profitable minimum selling price (MSP) of 14.4 €/kg for the “proteinaceous salt”. For further optimization of the production, increasing microalgal biomass concentration is the most effective way to reduce the total production cost and increase the profits of microalgae products.

“Engineering hepatitis B virus core particles for targeting HER2 receptors in vitro and in vivo”. Suffian IFBM, Wang JT-W, Hodgins NO, Klippstein R, Garcia-Maya M, Brown P, Nishimura Y, Heidari H, Bals S, Sosabowski JK, Ogino C, Kondo A, Al-Jamal KT, Biomaterials 120, 126 (2017). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.BIOMATERIALS.2016.12.012
Abstract: Hepatitis B Virus core (HBc) particles have been studied for their potential as drug delivery vehicles for cancer therapy. HBc particles are hollow nano-particles of 30-34 nm diameter and 7 nm thick envelopes, consisting of 180-240 units of 21 kDa core monomers. They have the capacity to assemble/dis-assemble in a controlled manner allowing encapsulation of various drugs and other biomolecules. Moreover, other functional motifs, i.e. receptors, receptor binding sequences, peptides and proteins can be expressed. This study focuses on the development of genetically modified HBc particles to specifically recognise and target human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2)-expressing cancer cells, in vitro and in vivo, for future cancer therapy. The non-specific binding capacity of wild type HBc particles was reduced by genetic deletion of the sequence encoding arginine-rich domains. A specific HER2-targeting was achieved by expressing the ZHER2 affibodies on the HBc particles surface. In vitro studies showed specific uptake of ZHER2-AHBc particles in HER2 expressing cancer cells. In vivo studies confirmed positive uptake of ZHER2-ABBc particles in HER2-expressing tumours, compared to non-targeted AHBc particles in intraperitoneal tumour-bearing mice models. The present results highlight the potential of these nanocarriers in targeting HER2-positive metastatic abdominal cancer following intra-peritoneal administration. (C) 2016 The Authors. “Preparation, structure, and electrochemistry of layered polyanionic hydroxysulfates : LiMSO4OH (M = Fe, Co, Mn) electrodes for Li-Ion batteries”. Subban CV, Ati M, Rousse G, Abakumov AM, Van Tendeloo G, Janot R, Tarascon J-M, Journal of the American Chemical Society 135, 3653 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1021/ja3125492
Abstract: The Li-ion rechargeable battery, due to its high energy density, has driven remarkable advances in portable electronics. Moving toward more sustainable electrodes could make this technology even more attractive to large-volume applications. We present here a new family of 3d-metal hydroxysulfates of general formula LiMSO4OH (M = Fe, Co, and Mn) among which (i) LiFeSO4OH reversibly releases 0.7 Li+ at an average potential of 3.6 V vs Li+/Li-0, slightly higher than the potential of currently lauded LiFePO4 (3.45 V) electrode material, and (ii) LiCoSO4OH shows a redox activity at 4.7 V vs Li+/Li-0. Besides, these compounds can be easily made at temperatures near 200 degrees C via a synthesis process that enlists a new intermediate phase of composition M-3(SO4)(2)(OH)(2) (M = Fe, Co, Mn, and Ni), related to the mineral caminite. Structurally, we found that LiFeSO4OH is a layered phase unlike the previously reported 3.2 V tavorite LiFeSO4OH. This work should provide an impetus to experimentalists for designing better electrolytes to fully tap the capacity of high-voltage Co-based hydroxysulfates, and to theorists for providing a means to predict the electrochemical redox activity of two polymorphs.

Abstract: The ability of different materials to display self-limiting growth has recently attracted an enormous amount of attention because of the importance of nanoscale materials in applications for catalysis, energy conversion, (opto)-electronics, and so forth. Here, we show that the electrochemical deposition of palladium (Pd) between graphene oxide (GO) sheets result in the self-limiting growth of 5-nm-thick Pd nanosheets. The self-limiting growth is found to be a consequence of the strong interaction of Pd with the confining GO sheets, which results in the bulk growth of Pd being energetically unfavorable for larger thicknesses. Furthermore, we have successfully carried out liquid exfoliation of the resulting Pd-GO laminates to isolate Pd nanosheets and have demonstrated their high efficiency in continuous flow catalysis and electrocatalysis.
