Abstract: Quantum confinement of the perpendicular motion of electrons in single-crystalline metallic superconducting nanofilms splits the conduction band into a series of single-electron subbands. A distinctive feature of such a nanoscale multi-band superconductor is that the energetic position of each subband can vary significantly with changing nanofilm thickness, substrate material, protective cover and other details of the fabrication process. It can occur that the bottom of one of the available subbands is situated in the vicinity of the Fermi level. We demonstrate that the character of the superconducting pairing in such a subband changes dramatically and exhibits a clear molecule-like trend, which is very similar to the well-known crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime to Bose-Einstein condensation (BCS-BEC) observed in trapped ultracold fermions. For Pb nanofilms with thicknesses of 4 and 5 monolayers (MLs) this will lead to a spectacular scenario: up to half of all the Cooper pairs nearly collapse, shrinking in the lateral size (parallel to the nanofilm) down to a few nanometers. As a result, the superconducting condensate will be a coherent mixture of almost molecule-like fermionic pairs with ordinary, extended Cooper pairs.

Abstract: Superconducting correlations in an isolated metallic grain are governed by the interplay between two energy scales: the mean level spacing delta and the bulk pairing gap Delta(0), which are strongly influenced by the position of the chemical potential with respect to the closest single-electron level. In turn superconducting correlations affect the position of the chemical potential. Within the parity projected BCS model we investigate the probability distribution of the chemical potential in a superconducting grain with randomly distributed single-electron levels. Taking into account statistical fluctuations of the chemical potential due to the pairing interaction, we find that such fluctuations have a significant impact on the critical level spacing delta(c) at which the superconducting correlations cease: the critical ratio delta(c)/Delta(0) at which superconductivity disappears is found to be increased.

Abstract: Small stationary diesel engines, like in generator sets, have limited emission control measures and are therefore responsible for 44% of the particulate matter (PM) emissions in the United States. The diesel exhaust composition depends on operating conditions of the combustion engine. Furthermore, the measurements are influenced by the used sampling method. This study examines the effect of engine loading and exhaust gas dilution on the composition of small-scale power generators. These generators are used in different operating conditions than road-transport vehicles, resulting in different emission characteristics. Experimental data were obtained for gaseous volatile organic compounds (VOC) and PM mass concentration, elemental composition and nitrate content. The exhaust composition depends on load condition because of its effect on fuel consumption, engine wear and combustion temperature. Higher load conditions result in lower PM concentration and sharper edged particles with larger aerodynamic diameters. A positive correlation with load condition was found for K, Ca, Sr, Mn, Cu, Zn and Pb adsorbed on PM, elements that originate from lubricating oil or engine corrosion. The nitrate concentration decreases at higher load conditions, due to enhanced nitrate dissociation to gaseous NO at higher engine temperatures. Dilution on the other hand decreases PM and nitrate concentration and increases gaseous VOC and adsorbed metal content. In conclusion, these data show that operating and sampling conditions have a major effect on the exhaust gas composition of small-scale diesel generators. Therefore, care must be taken when designing new experiments or comparing literature results.

Abstract: Accurate segmentation of nanoparticles within various matrix materials is a difficult problem in electron tomography. Due to artifacts related to image series acquisition and reconstruction, global thresholding of reconstructions computed by established algorithms, such as weighted backprojection or SIRT, may result in unreliable and subjective segmentations. In this paper, we introduce the Partially Discrete Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (PDART) for computing accurate segmentations of dense nanoparticles of constant composition. The particles are segmented directly by the reconstruction algorithm, while the surrounding regions are reconstructed using continuously varying gray levels. As no properties are assumed for the other compositions of the sample, the technique can be applied to any sample where dense nanoparticles must be segmented, regardless of the surrounding compositions. For both experimental and simulated data, it is shown that PDART yields significantly more accurate segmentations than those obtained by optimal global thresholding of the SIRT reconstruction.

Abstract: This paper is the second part of a two-part paper on direct structure inversion from exit waves. In the first part, a method has been proposed to quantitatively determine structure parameters with atomic resolution such as atom column positions, surface profile and the number of atoms in the atom columns. In this part, the theory will be demonstrated by means of a Au[110] exit wave reconstructed from a set of focal-series images. The procedures to analyze the experimentally reconstructed exit wave in terms of quantitative structure information are described in detail.

Abstract: Source size broadening is an important resolution limiting effect in modern STEM experiments. Here, we propose an alternative method to measure the source size broadening making use of a holographic biprism to create interference patterns in an empty Ronchigram. This allows us to measure the exact shape of the source size broadening with a much better sampling than previously possible. We find that the shape of the demagnified source deviates considerably from a Gaussian profile that is often assumed. We fit the profile with a linear combination of a Gaussian and a bivariate Cauchy distribution showing that even though the full width at half maximum is similar to previously reported measurements, the tails of the profile are considerable wider. This is of fundamental importance for quantitative comparison of STEM simulations with experiments as these tails make the image contrast dependent on the interatomic distance, an effect that cannot be reproduced by a single Gaussian profile of fixed width alone.

Abstract: A spiral holographic aperture is used in the condensor plane of a scanning transmission electron microscope to produce a focussed electron vortex probe carrying a topological charge of either −1, 0 or +1. The spiral aperture design has a major advantage over the previously used forked aperture in that the three beams with topological charge m=−1, 0, and 1 are not side by side in the specimen plane, but rather on top of each other, focussed at different heights. This allows us to have only one selected beam in focus on the sample while the others contribute only to a background signal. In this paper we describe the working principle as well as first experimental results demonstrating atomic resolution HAADF STEM images obtained with electron vortex probes. These results pave the way for atomic resolution magnetic information when combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy.

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate to what extent high resolution transmission electron microscopy images can be used to measure the mass, in terms of thickness, and surface profile, corresponding to the defocus offset, of an object at the atomic scale. Therefore, we derive an expression for the statistical precision with which these object parameters can be estimated in a quantitative analysis. Evaluating this expression as a function of the microscope settings allows us to derive the optimal microscope design. Acquiring three-dimensional structure information in terms of thickness turns out to be much more difficult than obtaining two-dimensional information on the projected atom column positions. The attainable precision is found to be more strongly affected by processes influencing the image contrast, such as phonon scattering, than by the specific choice of microscope settings. For a realistic incident electron dose, it is expected that atom columns can be distinguished with single atom sensitivity up to a thickness of the order of the extinction distance. A comparable thickness limit is determined to measure surface steps of one atom. An increase of the electron dose shifts the limiting thickness upward due to an increase in the signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract: A numerical model for NxOy remediation in humid air plasma produced with a dielectric barrier discharge at atmospheric pressure is presented. Special emphasis is given to NO2 and N2O reduction with the decrease of O2 content in the feedstock gas. A detailed reaction mechanism including electronic and ionic processes, as well as the contribution of radicals and excited atomic/molecular species is proposed. The temporal evolution of the densities of NO, NO2 and N2O species, and some other by-products, is analyzed, and the major pathways for the NxOy remediation are discussed for one pulse. Subsequently, simulations are presented for a multi-pulses case, where three O2 contents are tested for optimization of the remediation process. It is found that when the gas mixture O2/N2/H2O/NOx has no initial O2 content, the best NOx and N2O remediation is achieved.

Abstract: Modeling results are presented to gain a better insight in the properties of a SiH4/O2/Ar inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and how it interacts with a silicon substrate (wafer), as applied in the microelectronics industry for the fabrication of electronic devices. The SiH4/O2/Ar ICP is used for the filling of microtrenches with isolating material (SiO2), as applied in shallow trench isolation (STI). In this article, a detailed reaction set that describes the plasma chemistry of SiH4/O2/Ar discharges as well as surface processes, such as sputtering, oxidation, and deposition, is presented. Results are presented on the plasma properties during the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition process (PECVD) for different gas ratios, as well as on the shape of the filled trenches and the surface compositions of the deposited layers. For the operating conditions under study it is found that the most important species accounting for deposition are SiH2, SiH3O, SiH3 and SiH2O, while SiH+2, SiH+3, O+2 and Ar+ are the dominant species for sputtering of the surface. By diluting the precursor gas (SiH4) in the mixture, the deposition rate versus sputtering rate can be controlled for a desired trench filling process. From the calculation results it is clear that a high deposition rate will result in undesired void formation during the trench filling, while a small deposition rate will result in undesired trench bottom and mask damage by sputtering. By varying the SiH4/O2 ratio, the chemical composition of the deposited layer will be influenced. However, even at the highest SiH4/O2 ratio investigated (i.e., 3.2:1; low oxygen content), the bulk deposited layer consists mainly of SiO2, suggesting that low-volatile silane species deposit first and subsequently become oxidized instead of being oxidized first in the plasma before deposition. Finally, it was found that the top surface of the deposited layer contained less oxygen due to preferential sputtering of O atoms, making the top layer more Si-rich. However, this effect is negligible at a SiH4/O2 ratio of 2:1 or lower.

Abstract: Photocatalytic activity can be studied by several methods, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. To study photocatalytic activity in an easy, user-friendly, and realistic way, a completely new setup has been built. The setup is modularly constructed around Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy at the heart of it, resulting in great versatility. Complementary software has been written for automatic control of the setup and for processing the generated data. Two pollutants, oil and n-octane, are tested to validate the performance of the setup. These validation experiments confirm the usefulness and added value of the setup in general and of the FTIR detection methodology as well. It becomes clear that a system of online measurements with good repeatability, accuracy, and user-friendliness has been created.

Abstract: Quantum-size oscillations of the basic physical characteristics of a confined fermionic condensate are a well-known phenomenon. Its conventional understanding is based on the single-particle physics, whereby the oscillations follow variations in the single-particle density of states driven by the size quantization. Here we present a study of a cigar-shaped ultracold superfluid Fermi gas, which demonstrates an important many-body aspect of the quantum-size coherent effects, overlooked previously. The many-body physics is revealed here in the atypical crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) induced by the size quantization of the particle motion. The single-particle energy spectrum for the transverse dimensions is tightly bound, whereas for the longitudinal direction it resembles a quasi-free dispersion. This results in the formation of a series of single-particle subbands (shells) so that the aggregate fermionic condensate becomes a coherent mixture of subband condensates. Each time when the lower edge of a subband crosses the chemical potential, the BCS-BEC crossover is approached in this subband, and the aggregate condensate contains both BCS and BEC-like components.

Abstract: In this paper, the amorphous barium titanate precursor was prepared by the peroxo-hydroxide method and post-treated by various drying procedures, such as: room temperature drying, room temperature vacuum drying and vacuum drying at 50 degrees C. The objective in the latter two treatments was to increase the Ti-O-Ba bonds of the precursor. The post-treated precursors were compared with the untreated (i.e., 'wet') precursor. Also, a barium titanate precursor was prepared by an alkoxide route. Afterwards, the precursors were hydrothermally treated at 200 degrees C in a 10 M NaOH solution. Vacuum drying of the precursor seemingly promoted the formation of Ti-O-Ti bonds in the hydrothermal end-product. The low Ba:Ti ratio (0.66) of the alkoxide-route prepared precursor lead to a multi-phase hydrothermal product with BaTiO(3) as the main phase. In contrast, phase pure BaTiO(3), i.e. without BaCO(3) contamination, was obtained for the precursor which was dried at room temperature. Cube-shaped and highly crystalline BaTiO(3) particles were observed by electron microscopy for the hydrothermally treated peroxo-hydroxide-route prepared precursor. Abstract: Photocatalytic soot oxidation is studied on P25 TiO2 as an important model reaction for self-cleaning processes by means of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Contacting of carbon black with P25 leads on the one hand to a reduction of the local dioxygen concentration in the powder. On the other hand, the weakly adsorbed radicals on the carbon particles are likely to act as alternative traps for the photogenerated conduction-band electrons. We find furthermore that the presence of dioxygen and oxygen-related radicals is vital for the photocatalytic soot degradation. The complete oxidation of soot to CO2 is evidenced by in situ FTIR spectroscopy, no intermediate CO is detected during the photocatalytic process.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to gain understanding of the quasi-static, large strain deformation behavior at room-temperature of high-purity alpha-Ti with an initial split-basal texture. Simple shear tests were conducted along different directions in order to quantify the material's anisotropy and hardening evolution for different strain paths such as monotonic, Bauschinger, and cyclic loadings. The stress-strain curves indicate that the material displays strong anisotropy in the flow behavior. In order to capture the link between microstructure evolution (occurrence of twinning, grain size evolution, etc.) and the macroscopic response, a thoroughly detailed multi-scale characterization using scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis was also conducted. Specifically, EBSD analyses indicate that the twin activity and grain fragmentation are responsible for the observed difference between the macroscopic hardening rates corresponding to different directions and loading paths.
