“Size effects and strain state of Ga1-xInxAs/GaAs multiple quantum wells: Monte Carlo study”. Titantah JT, Lamoen D, Schowalter M, Rosenauer A, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 78, 165326 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.78.165326
Abstract: The effect of the size of the GaAs barrier and the Ga1−xInxAs well on the structural properties of a Ga1−xInxAs/GaAs multiple quantum well structure is investigated using the Metropolis Monte Carlo approach based on a well-parametrized Tersoff potential. It is found that within the well the Ga-As and In-As bond lengths undergo contractions whose magnitude increases with increasing In content in sharp contrast with bond-length variations in the bulk Ga1−xInxAs systems. For fixed barrier size and In content, the contraction of the bonds is also found to increase with increasing size of the well. Using the local atomic structure of the heterostructures, a more local analysis of the strain state of the systems is given and comparison with the prediction of macroscopic continuum elasticity theory shows deviations from the latter.

“Ground state and normal-mode spectra of a two-dimensional system of dipole particles confined in a parabolic trap”. Munarin FF, Ferreira WP, Farias GA, Peeters FM, Physical review : E : statistical, nonlinear, and soft matter physics 78, 031405 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.78.031405
Abstract: The ordered configurations of a monolayer of interacting magnetic dipoles confined in a circular parabolic potential are investigated as a function of the dipole moment of the particles. Despite the circular confinement, we find very asymmetric ordered structures like chains and Y-shaped configurations when a magnetic field is applied parallel to the plane of the particles. The normal-mode spectrum of the particles and its dependence on the magnetic field and the strength of the dipole moment of the particles are studied. The vibrational and rotational modes of the spectrum, which are associated with the stability of the system, are investigated in detail. The number of particles is varied and we found different ordering of the particles for different values of the dipole moment and the magnetic field. A ring structure with a large number of particles is observed for high values of the dipole moment of the particles.

“Oxidation processes at the metal/oxide interface in CoFe2/CoFe2O4 bilayers deposited by pulsed laser deposition”. Abstract: CoFe2/CoFe2O4 bilayers were made by pulsed laser ablation of a CoFe2 target on Si(I 0 0) substrates. The metallic layer was deposited first, in vacuum. The oxide was then deposited in an oxidizing O-2:N-2 (20:80) atmosphere. Two different procedures were used for the introduction of the oxidizing atmosphere in the deposition chamber: the laser ablation of the target was either stopped (discontinuous deposition process) or maintained (continuous deposition process) during the 20 min necessary for the establishment of the desired O-2:N-2 pressure. In both cases, the different electronegativities of Fe and Co cause an important modification of the Fe/Co ratio at the metal/oxide interface, with a depletion of Fe in the metal region and of Co in the oxide region. In the continuous procedure, the combination of the kinetic energy given by the ablation process to the Fe and Co adatoms with the one they get from their different affinity towards oxidation allows the formation of a low roughness metal/oxide interface with a high (111) preferred orientation of the CoFe2O4 layer, an induced re-crystallisation of the metal layer underneath and an unusual antiferromagnetic metal/oxide magnetic coupling. Abstract: Correlated, or extended, impurities play an important role in the transport properties of dirty metals. Here, we examine, in the framework of a tight-binding lattice, the transmission of a single electron through an array of correlated impurities. In particular we show that particles transmit through an impurity array in identical fashion, regardless of the direction of traversal. The demonstration of this fact is straightforward in the continuum limit, but requires a detailed proof for the discrete lattice. We also briefly demonstrate and discuss the time evolution of these scattering states, to delineate regions (in time and space) where the aforementioned symmetry is violated.

Abstract: The measurement of the electronic structure of anisotropic materials using energy loss near edge structure (ELNES) spectroscopy is an important field of microanalysis in transmission electron microscopy. We present a novel method to study the angular dependence of electron inelastic scattering in anisotropic materials. This method has been applied to the study of 1s -> pi* and sigma* transitions on the carbon K edge in pyrolitic graphite. An excellent agreement between experimental and theoretical two-dimensional scattering patterns has been found. In particular, the need of a fully relativistic calculation of the inelastic scattering cross-section to explain the experimental results is demonstrated. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: For many years magnesium oxide (MgO) has been a topic of research as buffer layer for high-temperature superconducting copper oxides and as protective layer in plasma display panels. Since epitaxial growth of MgO is expensive, time consuming and size restricted, other techniques have been developed to grow highly oriented MgO layers for industrial processes. MgO thin films were deposited on a tilted polycrystalline substrate by reactive sputtering using an unbalanced magnetron. By varying different deposition parameters, it is possible to grow biaxially aligned MgO layers, i.e. layers with both out-of-plane and in-plane alignment. XRD measurements were performed to examine the crystallographic structure of the thin film. The preferential out-of-plane orientation is analysed by angular scans using the peak intensity of different reflections while the in-plane orientation is determined by (002) pole figures. Fully [111] out-of-plane oriented layers were grown with a strong in-plane alignment. SEM and TEM measurements were performed to reveal the topographical and cross-sectional microstructure and to investigate the texture evolution of the MgO layers. Evolutionary columnar growth and a roof-tile surface have been observed.

“Stable and metastable states in a mesoscopic superconducting “eight&rdquo, loop in presence of an external magnetic field”. Vodolazov DY, Peeters FM, Physica: C : superconductivity 400, 165 (2004). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.physc.2003.08.003
Abstract: The stable and metastable states of different configurations of a mesoscopic loop in the form of an eight is studied in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that for certain configurations the current is equal to zero for any value of the magnetic field leading to a magnetic field independent superconducting state. The state with fixed phase circulation becomes unstable when the momentum of the superconducting electrons reaches a critical value. At this moment the kinetic energy of the superconducting condensate becomes of the same order as the potential energy of the Cooper pairs and it leads to an instability. Numerical analysis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations shows that the absolute value of the order parameter changes gradually at the transition from a state with one phase circulation to another although the vorticity change occurs abruptly. Abstract: Organic carbocyanine dye coatings have been analyzed by time-of-flight static secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-S-SIMS) using three types of primary ions: Ga+ operating at 25 keV, and Xe+ and SF5+ both operating at 9 keV. Secondary ion yields obtained with these three primary ions have been compared for coatings with different layer thickness, varying from (sub)-monolayer to multilayers, on different substrates (Si, Ag and AgBr cubic microcrystals). For (sub)-monolayers deposited on Ag, Xe+ and SF5+ primary ions generate similar precursor ion intensities, but with Ga+ slightly lower precursor ion intensities were obtained. Thick coatings on Ag as well as mono- and multilayers on Si produce the highest precursor and fragment ion intensities with the polyatomic primary ion. The yield difference between SF5+ and Xe+ can reach a factor of 6. In comparison with Ga+, yield enhancements by up to a factor of 180 are observed with SF5+. For the mass spectrometric analysis of dye layers on AgBr microcrystals, SF5+ again proves to be the primary ion of choice. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: Thin films of the superconducting Nd1+xBa2−xCu3O7−δ (NBCO) and Y1(NdxBa2−x)Cu3O7−δ (YNBCO) compounds have been deposited by dc magnetron sputtering and diode high pressure oxygen sputtering. Different techniques, including scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to study the film microstructures and the surface morphology. It is shown that the Nd/Ba exchange promotes a 2D heteroepitaxial growth in the case of the NBCO films deposited on (1 0 0) SrTiO3 substrates, with a suppression of the characteristic 3D spirals structures. On the contrary in YNBCO the Nd/Ba exchange does not provide a driving force for the suppression of screw-dislocations, since spirals or towers originated by screw and half loop dislocations are observed on the surface. TEM reveals that anti-phase boundaries are eliminated during the growth of NBCO films thanks to the Nd/Ba exchange while this mechanism is not operating in the case of YNBCO films.
