Title 'Natural' and 'man-made' platelets in type-la diamonds Type A1 Journal article
Year 1998 Publication Philosophical magazine: B: physics of condensed matter: electronic, optical and magnetic properties Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 78 Issue 3 Pages 299-314
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract 'Natural' platelets are planar defects in {001} planes found in natural type-IaA/B diamonds. 'Man-made' platelets are platelets formed in the laboratory by annealing type-IaA diamonds at temperatures over 2500 degrees C. Careful study shows that the infrared (IR) spectra of the 'man-made' platelets are different from the IR spectra of 'natural' platelets. High-temperature (T greater than or equal to 2000 degrees C) annealing of platelets containing type-IaA/B diamonds modifies the IR absorption spectrum owing to the 'natural' platelets and makes it similar to the IR spectrum of the 'man-made' platelets. It is suggested that such high-temperature annealing changes the structure of the 'natural' platelets. The changes are too subtle to be detected by electron microscopy techniques. Topographic electron-energy-loss spectroscopy shows that platelets contain nitrogen at an average density of 0.7 atoms per a(0)(2); however, high-temperature annealing does not seem to affect the concentration of the nitrogen in the platelets.

  Volume 200 Issue 1-2 Pages 148-154
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract High-quality single crystals of Rb2ZnCl4 and K2ZnCl4, pure or doped with Cu, Mn, Cd, Tl, Sn, Pb and In cations, were grown by Czochralski technique in argon atmosphere, using an experimental setup that allows direct visual access to the whole growth zone. Slowly cooled crystals exhibit excellent cleavage properties. Fastly cooled crystals do cleave poorly. As shown by X-ray diffraction studies, such K2ZnCl4 samples exhibit inclusions of the high-temperature Pmcn phase with lattice parameters a = 7.263(2) Angstrom, b = 12.562(2) Angstrom and c = 8.960(4) Angstrom in the P2(1) cn room temperature stable phase. ESR and optical spectroscopy studies revealed the localization and valence state of the cation dopants. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract The microstructure of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox (Bi-2223) tapes has been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM. The emphasis has been placed on: (1) an examination of the grain morphology and size, (2) grain and colony boundary angles, which are formed during the tape processing, (3) a study of the grain boundaries on an atomic scale, including intergrowth investigations. Tapes with different process parameters have been compared with respect to the microstructure. A fully processed tape has on the average 50% thicker Bi-2223 grains than a tape after the first annealing. The angles of c-axis tilt grain boundaries are on average 14° and 26° for the fully processed tape and the tape after the first annealing, respectively. The intergrowth content (15%) and distribution are similar in these two tapes.

  Volume 64 Issue 8 Pages 155303
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract The dispersion of the A-valence-band in GaN has been deduced from the observation of high-index magnetoexcitonic states in polarized interband magnetoreflectivity and is found to be strongly nonparabolic with a mass in the range 1.2-1.8m(e). It matches the theory of Kim et al. [Phys. Rev. B 56, 7363 (1997)] extremely well, which also gives a strong k-dependent A-valence-band mass. A strong phonon coupling leads to quenching of the observed transitions at about an LO-phonon energy above the band gap and a strong nonparabolicity. The valence band was deduced from subtracting from the reduced dispersion the electron contribution with a model that includes a full treatment of the electron-phonon interaction.

Abstract Convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) is used in this study to investigate the stress distribution around shallow trench isolation (STI) structures. Attention is given to the influence of the different processing parameters and the width and spacing of the structures. The use of a wet or a dry pregate oxidation is found to have a strong influence on the stress behavior. Isolated lines show more stress, leading to the formation of defects in the silicon substrate if a wet pregate oxidation is used. The CBED analyses are compared with micro-Raman and bright-field transmission electron microscopy measurements. (C) 2001 The Electrochemical Society.

Year 2001 Publication Applied physics letters Abbreviated Journal Appl Phys Lett
  Volume 79 Issue 22 Pages 3660-3662

Abstract High-resolution electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy have been used to compare the microstructure of NdBa2Cu3O7-delta and Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta thin films. Both films contain comparable amounts of Nd2CuO4 inclusions. Antiphase boundaries are induced by unit cell high steps at the substrate or by a different interface stacking. In Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta the antiphase boundaries tend to annihilate by the insertion of extra Nd layers. Stacking faults, which can be characterized as local Nd2Ba2Cu4O9 inclusions, also absorb the excess Nd. A correlation is made between the excess Nd and the absence of growth spirals at the surface of the Nd-rich films. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract The superconducting state of an infinitely long superconducting cylinder surrounded by a medium which enhances its superconductivity near the boundary is studied within the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. This enhancement can be due to the proximity of another superconductor or due to surface treatment. Quantities such as the free energy, the magnetization and the Cooper-pair density are calculated. Phase diagrams are obtained to investigate how the critical field and the critical temperature depend on this surface enhancement for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. Increasing the superconductivity near the surface leads to higher critical fields and critical temperatures. For small cylinder diameters only giant vortex states nucleate, while for larger cylinders multivortices can nucleate. The stability of these multivortex states also depends on the surface enhancement. For type-I superconductors we found the remarkable result that for a range of values of the surface extrapolation length the superconductor can transit from the Meissner state into superconducting states with vorticity L > 1. Such a behavior is not found for the case of large kappa, i.e., type-II superconductivity,

Abstract Transmission electron microscopy is used to evaluate different deposition techniques, which optimize the microstructure and physical properties of superconducting thin films. High-resolution electron microscopy proves that the use of an YBa2Cu2Ox buffer layer can avoid a variable interface configuration in YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films grown on SrTiO3. The growth can also be controlled at an atomic level by, using sub-unit cell layer epitaxy, which results in films with high quality and few structural defects. Epitaxial strain in Sr0.85La0.15CuO2 infinite layer thin films influences the critical temperature of these films, as well as the microstructure. Compressive stress is released by a modulated or a twinned microstructure, which eliminates superconductivity. On the other hand, also tensile strain seems to lower the critical temperature of the infinite layer.

Abstract Infrared absorption spectra of oxygen precipitates in boron-doped silicon with a boron concentration between 10(17) and 10(19) cm(-3) are analyzed, applying the spectral function representation of composite materials. The aspect ratio of the platelet precipitates is determined by transmission electron microscopy measurements. The analysis shows that in samples with moderate doping levels (<10(18) B cm(-3)) SiOγ precipitates are formed with the same composition as in the lightly doped case. In the heavily boron-doped (>10(18) cm(-3)) samples, however, the measured spectra of the precipitates are consistent with a mixture of SiO2 and B2O3, with a volume fraction of B2O3 as high as 0.41 in the most heavily doped case.   Abstract Quantum mechanical coupling and strain in two vertically arranged InP/InGaP quantum dots is studied as a function of the size of the dots and the spacer thickness. The strain distribution is determined by the continuum mechanical model, while the single-band effective-mass equation and the multiband k (.) p theory are employed to compute the conduction and valence band energy levels, respectively. The exciton states are obtained from an exact diagonalization approach, and we also compute the oscillator strength for recombination. We found that the light holes are confined by strain to the spacer, which is the reason that the hole states exhibit coupling at much larger distances as compared with the electrons. At small d, the doublet structure of the hole energy levels arises as a consequence of the relocation of the light hole from the matrix to the regions located-outside the stack, close to the dot-matrix interface. When d varies, the exciton ground state exhibits numerous anticrossings with other states, which are related to the changing spatial localization of the hole as a function of d. The oscillator strength of the exciton recombination is strongly reduced in a certain range of spacer thicknesses, which effectively turns a bright exciton state into a dark one. This effect is associated with anticrossings between exciton energy levels.

Abstract CeO2-doped ZrO2, (8 mol%) starting powder was sintered by means of spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1300 degrees C without holding time. The stability of the tetragonal ZrO2 phase in the Ce-ZrO2 ceramic sintered under strongly reducing conditions was investigated. The SPS sample consisted of monoclinic and tetragonal ZrO2 phase, with a volume ratio of two to one, as well as a trace amount of a Zr-Ce-O cubic solid solution phase. In contrast, the same powder sintered by hot-pressing in nitrogen at 1300 and 1500 degrees C for 1h showed no tetragonal ZrO2. Microstructural observation of the SPS ceramic by SEM and TEM revealed grains with and without twins. The reason for the appearance of the tetragonal phase in the SPS sample sintered under strongly reducing conditions is discussed. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
