Abstract: We study the commensurability oscillations in silicene subject to a perpendicular electric field E-z, a weak magnetic field B, and a weak periodic potential V = V-0 cos(Cy); C = 2 pi/a(0) with a(0) its period. The field E-z and/or the modulation lift the spin degeneracy of the Landau levels and lead to spin and valley resolved Weiss oscillations. The spin resolution is maximal when the field E-z is replaced by a periodic one E-z = E-0 cos(Dy); D = 2 pi/b(0), while the valley one is maximal for b(0) = a(0). In certain ranges of B values, the current is fully spin or valley polarized. Additional quantum Hall conductivity plateaux arise due to spin and valley intra-Landau-level transitions. Abstract: The interplay of massive electrons with spin-orbit coupling in bulk graphene results in a spin-valley dependent gap. Thus, a barrier with such properties can act as a filter, transmitting only opposite spins from opposite valleys. In this Letter we show that a strain induced pseudomagnetic field in such a barrier will enforce opposite cyclotron trajectories for the filtered valleys, leading to their spatial separation. Since spin is coupled to the valley in the filtered states, this also leads to spin separation, demonstrating a spin-valley filtering effect. The filtering behavior is found to be controllable by electrical gating as well as by strain.

Abstract: We present a zero-dimensional kinetic model of CO2 splitting in non-equilibrium plasmas. The model includes a description of the CO2 vibrational kinetics (25 vibrational levels up to the dissociation limit of the molecule), taking into account state-specific VT and VV relaxation reactions and the effect of vibrational excitation on other chemical reactions. The model is applied to study the reaction kinetics of CO2 splitting in an atmospheric-pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and in a moderate-pressure microwave discharge. The model results are in qualitative agreement with published experimental works. We show that the CO2 conversion and its energy efficiency are very different in these two types of discharges, which reflects the important dissociation mechanisms involved. In the microwave discharge, excitation of the vibrational levels promotes efficient dissociation when the specific energy input is higher than a critical value (2.0 eV/molecule under the conditions examined). The calculated energy efficiency of the process has a maximum of 23%. In the DBD, vibrationally excited levels do not contribute significantly to the dissociation of CO2 and the calculated energy efficiency of the process is much lower (5%).

Abstract: We study the effect of a hydrogen atom on the thermal stability of a trapped CH3 molecule on graphene using ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. Due to the hydrogen-molecule interaction, enhanced pinning of the CH3 molecule is observed when it is positioned adjacent to the graphene site with the hydrogen atom. We discuss the formation process of such a stable configuration, which originates from different adhesion and migration energies of the hydrogen atom and the CH3 molecule. We also studied the effect of the CH3-H configuration on the electronic transport properties of graphene nanoribbons using first principles density-functional calculations. We found that the formation of the CH3-H structure results in extra features in the transmission spectrum due to the formation of strongly localized states, which are absent when the CH3 molecule is trapped on pristine graphene. Our findings will be useful in exploiting gas sensing properties of graphene, especially for selective detection of individual molecules. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The instability of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) at the surface of nano-silicon electrodes has been recognized as one of the key issues to explain the rapid capacity fading of theses electrodes. In this paper, two distinct Si-based systems are studied by using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). First, several EIS spectra are recorded along the second electrochemical cycle. Although the active material, the electrode formulation, and the experimental conditions are different for the two systems, the same phenomena are observed in both cases: (i) the SEI deposit around 50 kHz, (ii) the charge transfer (CT) with a characteristic frequency varying from 300 to 1 500 Hz, and (iii) an inductive loop at ∼1 Hz which appears only when the potential of the electrode is below 0.35 V vs Li. As the latter has never been reported for Si-based electrodes, the second step of the work consists in understanding this phenomenon. Thanks to the results obtained in a set of several complementary experiments, we finally attribute the inductive loop to the constant formation/deposition of SEI products, in competition with the CT process. In addition, we propose a mechanism for this specific phenomenon and the equivalent circuit to fit the recorded EIS spectra.

Abstract: Nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) thin films were produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and doped by the addition of phosphine to the gas mixture. The characterization of the films focused on probing the incorporation and distribution of the phosphorus (P) dopants. Electron microscopy evaluated the overall film morphology and revealed the interior structure of the nanosized grains. The homogeneous films with distinct diamond grains featured a notably low sp(2):sp(3)-ratio as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. High resolution spectroscopy methods demonstrated a homogeneous P-incorporation, both in-depth and in-plane. The P concentration in the films was determined to be in the order of 10(19) cm(-3) with a significant fraction integrated at substitutional donor sites. (C) 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH Co. Abstract: Superior reliability of junctionless (JL) compared with inversion-mode field-effect transistors (FETs) is experimentally demonstrated on bulk FinFET wafers. The reduced negative bias temperature instability (NBTI) of JL pFETs outperforms the previously reported best NBTI reliability data obtained with Si channel devices and guarantees 10-year lifetime at typical operating voltages and high temperature. This behavior is understood through the reduced oxide electric field and lessened interaction between charge carriers and oxide traps during device operation. These findings encourage the investigation of JL devices with alternative channels as a promising alternative for 7-nm technology nodes meeting reliability targets.

Abstract: Recently, a new simple and fast method for the synthesis of InP quantum dots by using phosphine as phosphorous precursor and myristic acid as surface stabilizer was reported. Purification after synthesis is necessary to obtain samples with good optical properties. Two methods of purification were compared and the surface processes which occur during purification were studied. Traditional precipitation with acetone is accompanied by a small increase in photoluminescence. It occurs that during the purification the hydrolysis of the indium precursor takes place, which leads to a better surface passivation. The electrophoretic purification technique does not increase luminescence efficiency but yields very pure quantum dots in only a few minutes. Additionally, the formation of In(OH)(3) during the low temperature synthesis was explained. Purification of quantum dots is a very significant part of post-synthetical treatment that determines the properties of the material. But this subject is not sufficiently discussed in the literature. The paper is devoted to the processes that occur at the surface of quantum dots during purification. A new method of purification, electrophoresis, is investigated and described in particular.

Abstract: The state-of-the-science in sustainability assessment of soil and groundwater remediation is evaluated with the application of four decision support systems (DSSs) to a large-scale brownfield revitalization case study. The DSSs were used to perform sustainability appraisals of four technically feasible remediation alternatives proposed for the site. The first stage of the review compares the scope of each tool's sustainability indicators, how these indicators are measured and how the tools differ in terms of standardization and weighting procedures. The second stage of the review compares the outputs from the tools and determines the key factors that result in differing results between tools. The evaluation of indicator sets and tool structures explains why the tools generate differing results. Not all crucial impact areas, as identified by sustainable remediation forums, are thoroughly considered by the tools, particularly with regard to the social and economic aspects of sustainability. Variations in boundary conditions defined between technologies, produce distorted environmental impact results, especially when in-situ and ex-situ technologies are compared. The review draws attention to the need for end users to be aware of which aspects of sustainability are considered, how the aspects are measured and how all aspects are ultimately balanced in the evaluation of potential remediation strategies. Existing tools can be improved by considering different technologies within the same boundary conditions and by expanding indicator sets to include indicators deemed to be relevant by remediation forums. Abstract: The formation of a 3D network composed of free standing and interconnected Pt nanowires is achieved by a two-step method, consisting of conformal deposition of Pt by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on a forest of carbon nanotubes and subsequent removal of the carbonaceous template. Detailed characterization of this novel 3D nanostructure was carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The characterization showed that this pure 3D nanostructure of platinum is self-supported and offers an enhancement of the electrochemically active surface area by a factor of 50.

Abstract: The amount of animal manure that can be brought back to agricultural land is limited by legislation. Because pig manure is available in too large quantities in some areas, we investigate the techno-economic feasibility of converting it into valuable products. First, slurry is separated in water, a thick fraction and a fertilizer concentrate poor in phosphate. Then, the thick fraction is dried and pyrolyzed. Our goal is to identify the optimal pyrolysis and activation conditions for the production of biochar or activated carbon. The latter has interesting adsorption characteristics due to the presence of nitrogen. It can also be used as a soil amendment as it improves biomass quantity and quality. On top, it immobilizes toxic elements and stores carbon in the soil. Char thus has many interesting characteristics and can be valued in different ways. The economic feasibility has been explored by a first techno-economic modelling iteration. The critical factors influencing the feasibility are identified by Monte Carlo simulations for further improvement of the process design.
