Abstract: In this contribution, we report a fundamental study of the factors that set the contact resistivity between metals and highly doped semiconductors. We investigate the case of n-type doped Si contacted with amorphous TiSi combining first-principles calculations with Non-Equilibrium Green functions transport simulations. The intrinsic contact resistivity is found to saturate at similar to 2x10(-10) Omega.cm(2) with the doping concentration and sets an intrinsic limit to the ultimate contact resistance achievable for n-doped Si vertical bar amorphous-TiSi. This limit arises from the intrinsic properties of the semiconductor and of the metal such as their electron effective masses and Fermi energies. We illustrate that, in this regime, contacting metals with a heavy electron effective mass helps reducing the interface intrinsic contact resistivity.

Abstract: The effect of introducing a photocatalytically active coating inside a plasma unit is investigated. This technique combines the advantages of high product selectivity from catalysis and the fast start-up from plasma technology. In this study, a preselected TiO2 coating is applied on the collector electrode of a DC corona discharge unit as non-thermal plasma reactor, in order to study the oxidation of ethylene. For both positive and negative polarities an enhanced mineralization is observed while the formation of by-products drastically decreases. The plasma catalytic unit gave the best results when using negative polarity at a voltage of 15kV. This shows the potential of plasma catalysis as indoor air purification technology.

Abstract: Selective etching allows for obtaining carbon nanotubes with a specific chirality. While plasma-assisted etching has already been used to separate metallic tubes from their semiconducting counterparts, little is known about the nanoscale mechanisms of the etching process. We combine (reactive) molecular dynamics (MD) and force-bias Monte Carlo (tfMC) simulations to study H-etching of CNTs. In particular, during the hydrogenation and subsequent etching of both the carbon cap and the tube, they sequentially transform to different carbon nanostructures, including carbon nanosheet, nanowall, and polyyne chains, before they are completely removed from the surface of a substrate-bound Ni-nanocluster.We also found that onset of the etching process is different in the cases of the cap and the tube, although the overall etching scenario is similar in both cases. The entire hydrogenation/etching process for both cases is analysed in detail, comparing with available theoretical and experimental evidences.

Abstract: The catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons is an industrially important process, in which selectivity is a key issue. We here investigate the conversion of methanol to formaldehyde on a vanadia surface employing long timescale simulations, reaching a time scale of seconds. In particular, we compare the thermal process to the case where an additional external electric field is applied, as would be the case in a direct plasma-catalysis setup. We find that the electric field influences the retention time of the molecules at the catalyst surface. These simulations provide an atomic scale insight in the thermal catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation process, and in how an external electric field may affect this process.

Abstract: Bimetallic nanoparticles play a crucial role in various applications. A better understanding of their properties would facilitate these applications and possibly even enable chirality-specific growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). We here examine the stabilities of NiFe, NiGa, and FeGa nanoparticles and the effect of carbon dissolved in NiFe nanoparticles through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and Born Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulations. We establish that nanoparticles with more Fe in the core and more Ga on the surface are more stable and compare these results with well-known properties such as surface energy and atom size. Furthermore, we find that the nanoparticles become more stable with increasing carbon content, both at 0 K and at 700 K. These results provide a basis for further research into the chirality-specific growth of CNT's.

Abstract: Synthetic glucocorticoids (GC) are the mainstay therapy for treatment of acute and chronic inflammatory disorders. Due to the high adverse effects associated with long-term use, GC pharmacology has focused since the nineties on more selective GC ligand-binding strategies, classified as selective glucocorticoid receptor (GR) agonists (SEGRAs) or selective glucocorticoid receptor modulators (SEGRMs). In the current study, GSK866 analogs with electrophilic covalent-binding warheads were developed with potential SEGRA properties to improve their clinical safety profile for long-lasting topical skin disease applications. Since the off-rate of a covalently binding drug is negligible compared to that of a non-covalent drug, its therapeutic effects can be prolonged and typically, smaller doses of the drug are necessary to reach the same level of therapeutic efficacy, thereby potentially reducing systemic side effects. Different analogs of SEGRA GSK866 coupled to cysteine reactive warheads were characterized for GR potency and selectivity in various biochemical and cellular assays. GR- and NFκB-dependent reporter gene studies show favorable anti-inflammatory properties with reduced GR transactivation of two non-steroidal GSK866 analogs UAMC-1217 and UAMC-1218, whereas UAMC-1158 and UAMC-1159 compounds failed to modulate cellular GR activity. These results were further supported by GR immuno-localization and S211 phospho-GR western analysis, illustrating significant GR phosphoactivation and nuclear translocation upon treatment of GSK866, UAMC-1217, or UAMC-1218, but not in case of UAMC-1158 or UAMC-1159. Furthermore, mass spectrometry analysis of tryptic peptides of recombinant GR ligand-binding domain (LBD) bound to UAMC-1217 or UAMC-1218 confirmed covalent cysteine-dependent GR binding. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations, as well as glucocorticoid receptor ligand-binding domain (GR-LBD) coregulator interaction profiling of the GR-LBD bound to GSK866 or its covalently binding analogs UAMC-1217 or UAMC-1218 revealed subtle conformational differences that might underlie their SEGRA properties. Altogether, GSK866 analogs UAMC-1217 and UAMC-1218 hold promise as a novel class of covalent-binding SEGRA ligands for the treatment of topical inflammatory skin disorders.

Abstract: <script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('The resistive random-access memory (RRAM) device concept is close to enabling the development of a new generation of non-volatile memories, provided that their reliability issues are properly understood. The design of a RRAM operating with extrinsic defects based on metallic inclusions, also called conductive bridge RAM, allows the use of a large spectrum of solid electrolytes. However, when scaled to device dimensions that meet the requirements of the latest technological nodes, the discrete nature of the atomic structure of the materials impacts the device operation. Using density functional theory simulations, we evaluated the migration kinetics of Cu conducting species in amorphous and solid electrolyte materials, and established that atomic disorder leads to a large variability in terms of defect stability and kinetic barriers. This variability has a significant impact on the filament resistance and its dynamics, as evidenced during the formation step of the resistive filament. Also, the atomic configuration of the formed filament can age/relax to another metastable atomic configuration, and lead to a modulation of the resistivity of the filament. All these observations are qualitatively explained on the basis of the computed statistical distributions of the defect stability and on the kinetic barriers encountered in RRAM materials.'));

The structural analysis shows the presence of two distinct crystal morphologies, that is thin flakes with lateral sizes up to 50 m and nanometer scale thickness, and much thicker but smaller crystallites. Both show similar Raman response associated with SnS. The structural analysis with transmission electron microscopy shows that the flakes are single crystals of -SnS with [010] normal to the substrate. Parallel with the surface of the flakes, lamellae with varying thickness of a new SnS phase are observed. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), first-principles simulations (DFT) and nanobeam diffraction (NBD) techniques are employed to characterise this phase in detail. DFT results suggest that the phase is a strain stabilised \u0027 one grown epitaxially on the -SnS crystals. TEM analysis shows that the crystallites are also -SnS with generally the [010] direction orthogonal to the substrate. Contrary to the flakes the crystallites consist of two to four grains which are tilted up to 15 degrees relative to the substrate. The various grain boundary structures and twin relations are discussed. Under high-dose electron irradiation, the SnS structure is reduced and -Sn formed. It is shown that this damage only occurs for SnS in direct contact with SiO2. Lay description SnS is a p-type semiconductor, which has attracted significant interest for electronic devices due to its unique properties, low-toxicity and abundance of Sn in nature. Although in the past it has been most extensively studied as the absorber material in solar cells, it has recently garnered interest for application as a p-type two-dimensional semiconductor in nanoelectronic devices due to its anisotropic layered structure similar to the better known phosphorene. Tin sulphide can take the form of several phases and the electronic properties of the material depend strongly on its crystal structure. It is therefore crucial to study the crystal structure of the material in order to predict the electronic properties and gain insight into the growth mechanism. In this work, SnS crystals deposited using a chemical vapour deposition technique are investigated extensively for their crystal and defect structure using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and related techniques. We find the presence of two distinct crystal morphologies, that is thin flakes with lateral sizes up to 50 m and nm scale thickness, and much thicker but smaller crystallites. The flakes are single crystals of -SnS and contain lamellae with varying thickness of a different phase which appear to be -SnS at first glance. High-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy is used to characterise these lamellae where the annular bright field (ABF) mode better reveals the position of the sulphur columns. The sulphur columns in the lamellae are found to be shifted relative to the -SnS structure which indicates the formation of a new phase which is a distorted version of the phase which we tentatively refer to as \u0027-SnS. Simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) are used to model the interface and a similar shift of sulphur columns in the -SnS layer is observed which takes place as a result of strong interaction at the interface between the two phases resulting in strain transfer. Nanobeam electron diffraction (NBD) is used to map the lattice mismatch in the thickness of the flakes which reveals good in-plane matching and some expansion out-of-plane in the lamellae. Contrary to the flakes the crystallites are made solely of -SnS and consist of two to four grains which are tilted up to 15 degrees relative to the substrate. Abstract: Despite the numerous studies on the adsorption of different proteins onto mesoporous titanium dioxide and indications on the important role of buffer solutions in bioactivity, a systematic study on the impact of the buffer on the protein incorporation into porous substrates is still lacking. We here studied the interaction between a commercial mesoporous TiO2 and three of the most used buffers for protein incorporation, i.e. HEPES, Tris and phosphate buffer. In addition, this paper analyzes the adsorption of horse heart myoglobin (hhMb) onto commercial mesoporous TiO2 as a model system to test the influence of buffers on the protein incorporation behavior in mesoporous TiO2. N2 sorption analysis, FT-IR and TGA/DTG measurements were used to evaluate the interaction between the buffers and the TiO2 surface, and the effect of such an interaction on hhMb adsorption. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) were used to detect changes in the microenvironment surrounding the heme. The three buffers show a completely different interaction with the TiO2 surface, which drastically affects the adsorption of myoglobin as well as its structure and electrochemical activity. Therefore, special attention is required while choosing the buffer medium to avoid misguided evaluation of protein adsorption on mesoporous TiO2.

Abstract: Due to the important role that the application of mathematical programming models have in determining optimal cropping patterns, this research presents a sustainable cropping pattern that considers selected economic, environmental, and social goals together. Using a random sampling method, a sample size of 168 farmers was selected in the Sari County, Iran. Our results showed that economic, self-sufficiency, environmental, and social goals have a distinctly different impact on cropping pattern performance. Compared to the current cropping pattern, the gross margins for economic and social goals increased by nearly 11 and 2 %, respectively, and the gross margins for self-sufficiency and environmental goals decreased by nearly 2 and 36 %. Interestingly, it has been found that the performance of the current cropping pattern has an average positive impact of 6 % if economic, self-sufficiency, environmental, and social (employment) goals are realized simultaneously.

Abstract: In a mesoscopic sample of a chiral p-wave superconductor, novel states comprising skyrmions and edge states have been stabilized in out-of-plane applied magnetic field. Using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations we shed light on the dynamic response of such states to an external applied current. Three different regimes are obtained, namely, the superconducting (stationary), resistive (non-stationary) and normal regime, similarly to conventional s-wave superconductors. However, in the resistive regime and depending on the external current, we found that moving skyrmions and the edge state behave distinctly different from the conventional kinematic vortex, thereby providing new fingerprints for identification of p-wave superconductivity. Abstract: Ceramic materials are prone to slow crack growth, resulting in strength degradation over time. Although yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramics have higher crack resistance than other dental ceramics, their aging susceptibility threatens their long-term performance in aqueous environments such as the oral cavity. Unfortunately, increasing the aging resistance of Y-TZP ceramics normally reduces their crack resistance. Our recently conducted systematic study of doping 3Y-TZP with various trivalent cations revealed that lanthanum oxide (La2O3) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) have the most potent effect to retard the aging kinetics of 3Y-TZP. In this study, the crack-propagation behavior of La2O3 and Al2O3 co-doped 3Y-TZP ceramics was investigated by double-torsion methods. The grain boundaries were examined using scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (STEM-EDS). Correlating these analytic data with hydrothermal aging studies using different doping systems, a strategy to strongly bind the segregated dopant cations with the oxygen vacancies at the zirconia-grain boundary was found to improve effectively the aging resistance of Y-TZP ceramics without affecting the resistance to crack propagation.

Abstract: Hydrogen–graphite interactions are relevant to a wide variety of applications, ranging from astrophysics to fusion devices and nano-electronics. In order to shed light on these interactions, atomistic simulation using Molecular Dynamics (MD) has been shown to be an invaluable tool. It suffers, however, from severe timescale
limitations. In this work we apply the recently developed Collective Variable-Driven Hyperdynamics (CVHD) method to hydrogen etching of graphite for varying inter-impact times up to a realistic value of 1 ms, which corresponds to a flux of
1020 m2 s1. The results show that the erosion yield, hydrogen surface coverage and species distribution are significantly affected by the time between impacts. This can be explained by the higher probability of C–C bond breaking due to the prolonged exposure to thermal stress and the subsequent transition from ion- to thermal-induced etching. This latter regime of thermal-induced etching – chemical erosion – is here accessed for the first time using atomistic simulations. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that accounting for long time-scales significantly affects ion bombardment simulations and should not be neglected in a wide range of conditions, in contrast to what is typically assumed.
