Title Deeper insights into the photoluminescence properties and (photo)chemical reactivity of cadmium red (CdS1-xSex) paints in renowned twentieth century paintings by state-of-the-art investigations at multiple length scales Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Cadmium red is the name used for denoting a class of twentieth century artists' pigments described by the general formula CdS1-xSex. For their vibrant hues and excellent covering power, a number of renowned modern and contemporary painters, including Jackson Pollock, often used cadmium reds. As direct band gap semiconductors, CdS1-xSex compounds undergo direct radiative recombination (with emissions from the green to orange region) and radiative deactivation from intragap trapping states due to crystal defects, which give rise to two peculiar red-NIR emissions, known as deep level emissions (DLEs). The positions of the DLEs mainly depend on the Se content of CdS1-xSex; thus, photoluminescence and diffuse reflectance vis-NIR spectroscopy have been profitably used for the non-invasive identification of different cadmium red varieties in artworks over the last decade. Systematic knowledge is however currently lacking on what are the parameters related to intrinsic crystal defects of CdS1-xSex and environmental factors influencing the spectral properties of DLEs as well as on the overall (photo)chemical reactivity of cadmium reds in paint matrixes. Here, we present the application of a novel multi-length scale and multi-method approach to deepen insights into the photoluminescence properties and (photo)chemical reactivity of cadmium reds in oil paintings by combining both well established and new non-invasive/non-destructive analytical techniques, including macro-scale vis-NIR and vibrational spectroscopies and micro-/nano-scale advanced electron microscopy mapping and X-ray methods employing synchrotron radiation and conventional sources. Macro-scale vis-NIR spectroscopy data obtained from the in situ non-invasive analysis of nine masterpieces by Gerardo Dottori, Jackson Pollock and Nicolas de Stael allowed classifying the CdS1-xSex-paints in three groups, according to the relative intensity of the two DLE bands. These outcomes, combined with results from micro-/nano-scale electron microscopy mapping and X-ray analysis of a set of CdS1-xSex powders and artificially aged paint mock-ups, indicated that the relative intensity of DLEs is not affected by the morphology, microstructure and local atomic environment of the pigment particles but it is influenced by the presence of moisture. Furthermore, the extensive study of artificially aged oil paint mock-ups permitted us to provide first evidence of the tendency of cadmium reds toward photo-degradation and to establish that the conversion of CdS1-xSex to CdSO4 and/or oxalates is triggered by the oil binding medium and moisture level and depends on the Se content. Based on these findings, we could interpret the localized presence of CdSO4 and cadmium oxalate as alteration products of the original cadmium red paints in two paintings by Pollock.

Abstract In typical seed-mediated syntheses of metal nanocrystals, the shape of the nanocrystal is determined largely by the seed nucleation environment and subsequent growth environment (where “environment” refers to the chemical environment, including the surfactant and additives). In this approach, crystallinity is typically determined by the seeds, and surfaces are controlled by the environment(s). However, surface energies, and crystallinity, are both influenced by the choice of environment(s). This limits the permutations of crystallinity and surface facets that can be mixed and matched to generate new nanocrystal morphologies. Here, we control post-seed growth to deliberately incorporate twin planes during the growth stage to deliver new final morphologies, including twinned cubes and bipyramids from single-crystal seeds. The nature and number of twin planes, together with surfactant control of facet growth, define the final nanoparticle morphology. Moreover, by breaking symmetry, the twin planes introduce new facet orientations. This additional mechanism opens new routes for the synthesis of different morphologies and facet orientations.

Abstract The reaction of a Ti (8 nm) capped Co film (15 nm) with a Si3N4 layer (150 nm) is studied after rapid thermal annealing at 660 degreesC for 120 s in a N-2 ambient. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy are used to study the reaction products. Combining the results of the different analyses yields a layer stack consisting of: TiO2/TiO/unreacted Co/(Ti,Co)(2)N/Co2Si, followed by amorphous Si3N4. The reaction mechanisms are discussed. Conclusions concerning the risk for degradation of nitride spacers in advanced devices are drawn. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(00)05248-7].

Abstract Highly effective IR light-emitting diodes operating at the wavelength 1.66 mu m and based on the buried heterostructure In0.88Ga0.12As0.26P0.74/ In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/In0.53Ga0.47As/InP have been grown by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) and characterized in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM),electron diffraction (ED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electroluminescence measurements. The InGaAsP epilayers are found to be well lattice matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in InGaAsP alloys. A new type of selective CK, gas sensor has been developed and fabricated an the basis of the IR light-emitting diode mentioned above. Especially designed for the remote control of CH4 gas via fibre optics, an integrated optoelectronic readout scheme has been developed and tested, It is shown that the proposed type of sensor can be used for the quantitative remote control of CH4 gas concentration (0.2-100%) via a fibre glass line up to a distance of 2 x 1 km.   Abstract YBa2Cu3O7-x artificial grain boundary Josephson junctions have been fabricated, employing a recently implemented biepitaxial technique. The grain boundaries can be obtained by controlling the orientation of the MgO seed layer and are characterized by a misalignment of the c-axes (45 degrees a-axis tilt or 45 degrees a-axis twist). These types of grain boundaries are still mostly unexplored. We carried out a complete characterization of their transport properties and microstructure. Junctions and de SQUIDs associated with these grain boundaries exhibit an excellent Josephson phenomenology and high values of the ICRN product and of the magnetic flux-to-voltage transfer parameter respectively. Remarkable differences in the transport parameters of tilt and twist junctions have been observed, which can be of interest for several applications. A maximum speed of Josephson vortices as calculated from the voltage step values of the order of 2 x 10(6) m s(-1) is obtained. These devices could also have some impact on experiments designed to study the symmetry of the order parameter, exploiting their microstructure and anisotropic properties. High-resolution electron microscopy showed the presence of perfect basal plane faced boundaries in the cross sections of tilt boundaries.

Abstract We have investigated epitaxially grown single-crystalline Ca-doped LaMnO3 thin films using the pulsed laser deposition technique in a case study aimed to explore the possibilities buried in epitaxial stress tailoring in order to control the transport properties of CMR materials beyond the limits set by equilibrium thermodynamics. Depending on the film thickness there is an abrupt transition from pseudomorphic to epitaxial granular growth observable which is related to the epitaxial strain of the films. This is associated with microscopic stress relaxation and leads to well controllable modifications of the atomic arrangements of the Mn-O sublattice in the films. Due to the interrelation of double exchange, spin-, charge- and orbital ordering and the Jahn-Teller effect mediated coupling of the electronic system to the crystal lattice, the magnetotransport properties of the firms can be modified in a controllable way.

Abstract The ground state of a classical two-dimensional (2D) system with a finite number of charge particles, trapped by two positive impurity charges localized at a distance (z(0)) from the. 2D plane and separated from each other by a distance chi(p) are obtained. The impurities are allowed to carry more than one positive charge. This classical system can form a 2D-like classical molecule that exhibits structural transitions and spontaneous symmetry breaking as function of the separation between the positive charges before it transforms into two 2D-like classical atoms. We also observe structural transitions as a function of the dielectric constant of the substrate which supports the charged particles, in addition to broken symmetry states and unbinding of particles.   Abstract Infrared absorption spectra of polyhedral and platelet oxygen precipitates are analyzed using a modified Day-Thorpe approach (J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 11 (1999) 2551). The aspect ratio has been determined by TEM measurements. The reduced spectral function and the stoichiometry are extracted from the absorption spectra and the concentration of precipitated interstitial oxygen. One set of spectra reveal a Frohlich frequency around 1100 cm(-1) and another around 1110-1120 cm(-1). It is shown that the shift in the Frohlich frequency is not due to a different stoichiometry, but due to the detailed structure in the reduced spectral function. The oxygen precipitates consist of SiO. with gammaapproximate to1.1-1.2+/-0.1. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract We report the suppression of the Hall effect in a mesoscopic Hall cross with a strong magnetic field only in the centre and vanishingly small outside, The local magnetic field is produced by placing Dy pillar on top of a structure with a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas. The effect is found to be due to a sharp increase of the number of back-scattered and quasi-localised electron orbits. The possibility of localising electrons inside the magnetic inhomogeneity region is discussed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
