Abstract |
The two-dimensional electron gas occurring between the band insulators SrTiO 3 and LaAlO 3 continues to attract considerable interest, due to the possibility of dynamic control over the carrier density, and the ensuing phenomena such as magnetism and superconductivity. The formation of this conducting interface is sensitive to the growth conditions, but despite numerous investigations, there are still questions about the details of the physics involved. In particular, not much is known about the electronic structure of the growing LaAlO 3 layer at the growth temperature (around 800 ◦ C) in oxygen (pressure around 5 × 10 −5 mbar), since analysis techniques at these conditions are not readily available. We developed a pulsed laser deposition system inside a low-energy electron microscope in order to study this issue. The setup allows for layer-by-layer growth control and in-situ measurements of the angle-dependent electron reflection intensity, which can be used as a fingerprint of the electronic structure of the surface layers during growth. By using different substrate terminations and growth conditions we observe two families of reflectivity maps, which we can connect either to samples with an AlO 2 -rich surface and a conducting interface; or to samples with a LaO-rich surface and an insulating interface. Our observations emphasize that substrate termination and stoichiometry determine the electronic structure of the growing layer, and thereby the conductance of the interface. |

Abstract |
The phase transformation sequences during thermal decomposition are investigated for Ni-rich melt-quenched body-centred cubic (bcc) and amorphous Ni-Zr alloys. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are used to determine the structure of crystallization products occurring after heating the melt-spun ribbon samples to various degrees of the phase transformation process monitored by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A single DSC peak is observed for both the bcc and amorphous Ni(91)Zr(9) alloys and a two-step process is indicated by DSC for the amorphous Ni(90)Zr(10) alloy. In the bcc-Ni(91)Zr(9) alloy which is actually a Ni(Zr) solid solution phase, the phase transformation starts with the precipitation of Ni(5)Zr crystallites followed, after a sufficient depletion of the matrix in Zr, by the subsequent transformation of the bcc-Ni(Zr) lattice to face-centred cubic (fcc) Ni. In the amorphous alloy of the same composition, the final products are fcc-Ni and Ni(5)Zr but at intermediate stages of the phase transformation, bcc-Ni(Zr) crystallites also appear. In the a-Ni(90)Zr(10) alloy the first DSC peak corresponds to the formation of the bcc-Ni(Zr) phase which then decomposes (second DSC peak) to the equilibrium phases fcc-Ni and Ni(5)Zr. Thus, in addition to the previous observation of the formation of the metastable bcc-Ni(Zr) phase by rapid quenching from the melt, here we present evidence that this phase can form also after partial crystallization of metallic glasses of appropriate chemical compositions. |

Abstract |
In this work we present for the first time, to our knowledge, the CVD epitaxial growth of beta -SiC using an ion beam synthesized (IBS) beta -SiC layer as seed, which has been formed by multiple implantation into Si wafers at 500 degreesC. The ion beam synthesized continuous layer is constituted by beta -SiC nanocrystals that are well oriented relative to the silicon substrate. Comparison of the epitaxial growth on these samples with that on silicon test samples, both on and off-axis, is performed. The results show that the epitaxial growth can be achieved on the IBS samples without the need of the carbonization step and that the structural quality of the CVD layer is comparable to that obtained on a carbonized silicon sample. Improvement of the quality of the deposited layer is proposed. |

Abstract |
The recently discovered superconducting mercury-based cuprates HgBa2Can-1CunO2n+2+delta have proved difficult to synthesize as single phases and are sensitive to environment (CO2, moisture). The present paper gives an overview of new series mercury based superconductors, whose stabilisation is based on the fact that a foreign cation with a higher valency than Hg(II) must be introduced in the mercury layers, in order to fill up partially the oxygen vacancies of these layers. By this method, several new series of superconductors involving strontium instead of barium with critical temperatures ranging from 27 K to 95 K have been isolated : Hg0.5Bi0.5Sr2-xLaxCuO4+delta, Hg(0.5)Bi(0.5)Sr(2)Ca(1-x)R(x)Cu(2)O(6+delta) (R Y, Nd, Pr), Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2-xLaxCuO4+delta, Pb(0.7)Hg(0.3)Sr(2)Ca(1-x)R(x)Cu(2)O(6+delta) (R = Y, Nd) Hg(1-x)Pr(x)Sr(2)A(1-x')Pr(x') Cu2O6+delta (A = Sr, Ca), Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2Cu2CO3O7 and Hg1-xCrxSr2CuO4+delta. The behaviour of the praseodymium cuprates that exhibit a rather sharp transition and reach a Tc of 85 K is especially discussed. A method to synthesize new ''Ba-Hg'' superconducting cuprates with the 1212 structure at normal pressure with a Tc up to 110 K is also presented. |

Abstract |
The fluorination of La2CuO4 can lead to different oxyfluoride compounds depending on the TF2 temperature of the fluorine gas treatment. When 150-degrees-C T(F2) less-than-or-equal-to 200-degrees-c less-than-or-equal-to 200-degrees-C a superconducting material is obtained. Previous neutron diffraction experiments as well as the EXAFS measurements at the La L(III) edge indicate that extra anions lie in an interstitial site between the two (LaO) layers. Electron diffraction patterns clearly show the existence of an incommensurate modulation due to the presence of shear planes. A second phase is also pointed out which can be obtained as a major component when the fluorination temperature is raised to 230-degrees-C. This phase which is not a superconductor crystallizes with the monoclinic symmetry. |

Abstract |
In this paper a particularly simple but efficient method is presented by which samples of alkali-doped C-60 materials or other air-sensitive materials can be prepared and transferred into a transmission electron microscope for direct observations and investigations. Flexible, transparent glove bags are used which are filled to a slight overpressure with dry nitrogen. Under this protective atmosphere, the air-sensitive sample is mounted in the specimen holder and inserted in the vacuum of the electron microscope. Rb6C60 which is prepared and transferred into the microscope in this way has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results confirm the bcc structure and especially the location of the rubidium atoms. |

Abstract |
A multi-species Monte Carlo (MC) model, combined with an analytical surface model, has been developed in order to investigate the general plasma processes occurring during the sputter deposition of complex oxide films in a dual-magnetron sputter deposition system. The important plasma species, such as electrons, Ar+ ions, fast Ar atoms and sputtered metal atoms (i.e. Mg and Al atoms) are described with the so-called multi-species MC model, whereas the deposition of MgxAlyOz films is treated by an analytical surface model. Targetsubstrate distances for both magnetrons in the dual-magnetron setup are varied for the purpose of growing stoichiometric complex oxide thin films. The metal atoms are sputtered from pure metallic targets, whereas the oxygen flux is only directed toward the substrate and is high enough to obtain fully oxidized thin films but low enough to avoid target poisoning. The calculations correspond to typical experimental conditions applied to grow these complex oxide films. In this paper, some calculation results are shown, such as the densities of various plasma species, their fluxes toward the targets and substrate, the deposition rates, as well as the film stoichiometry. Moreover, some results of the combined model are compared with experimental observations. Note that this is the first complete model, which can be applied for large and complicated magnetron reactor geometries, such as dual-magnetron configurations. With this model, we are able to describe all important plasma species as well as the deposition process. It can also be used to predict film stoichiometries of complex oxide films on the substrate. |

Abstract |
We measured the electrical resistivity R(T) and specific heat C-p(T) between room temperature (RT) and 4.2 K as well as the microstructure by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of a Ni-52 Ti-48 SMA quenched from 1000degreesC (B2-Phase range) to RT and then annealed for 1h at T=380degreesC, 550degreesC and 650degreesC. In the “as quenched” and the “650degreesC annealed” state no martensitic transformations (MT's) occur. The diffraction patterns show faint reflections originating from coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation. Additional reflections of the type 1/2 <110>, 1/2 <111> and 1/3 <110> result from various lattice displacement waves, which are precursors of the MT's to the B19' and R-phase, respectively. Indeed, high resolution TEM micrographs of the [001] zone of the “as quenched” sample reveal transverse 1/2 <110> <110> lattice displacement waves, precursors of the B19' martensite. The coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates, homogeneously distributed on a small length scale, binder the MT's in the “as quenched” and the “650degreesC annealed” state, and thus only the precursors appear. When annealed at T=380degreesC, however, coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates with a length of 10nm are clearly visible in TEM. These precipitates trigger the NIT from the B2 to the R-phase on cooling, as evidenced also by anomalies in R(T) and C-p(T). Annealing at T-550degreesC leads to the well known two step MT's from the B2 to the R-phase and then into the B19'-phase. These martensitic transitions are clearly seen as additional peaks in the specific heat and anomalies in the resistance, while the “as quenched” and 650degreesC annealed samples show weak features in R(T) and C-p(T). |

Abstract |
Wigner molecules formed at high magnetic fields in circular and elliptic quantum dots are studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) methods with multicenter basis of displaced lowest Landau level wave functions. The broken symmetry states with semi-classical charge density constructed from superpositions of the ED solutions are compared to the UHF results. UHF overlooks the dependence of the few-electron wave functions on the actual relative positions of electrons localized in different charge puddles and partially compensates for this neglect by an exaggerated separation of charge islands which are more strongly localized than in the exact broken-symmetry states. Abstract |
The influence of the well width fluctuations on the dependence of the binding energy of excitonic complexes in quantum wells is studied by using the path-integral Monte-Carlo technique. The results are compared with available experimental data and a good agreement is found. |

Abstract |
We developed a microscopic model in order to describe the onset of ferromagnetism (FM) in GaAs:Mn. The proposed kinematic mechanism bears resemblances with the Zener exchange. The calculated Curie temperature for GaAs: Mn is in good agreement with available experimental data of the Curie temperature as a function of the manganese concentration. |

Abstract |
The present paper describes the synthesis, characterization of mixed-valence bismuthates with three- or two-dimensional perovskite-like structures and structural criteria that influence superconductivity in these compounds. Single-phase samples of Sr1-xKxBiO3 were prepared for the broad range of K-content: 0.25 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65. For these bismuthates the symmetry of the structure changes from monoclinic to orthorhombic and finally to tetragonal upon increasing the K-content thus resulting in the decrease of the Bi-O distances and reduction of the network distortions. Superconductivity with maximum T-c = 12 K exists in the narrow range (x approximate to 0.5-0.6) within the stability field of the tetragonal phase (0.33 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.65), when the three-dimensional octahedral framework has close to the ideal perovskite structure arrangement. The layered type (Ba,K)(3)Bi2O7 and (Ba,K)(2)BiO4 bismuthates belonging to the A(n+1)B(n)O(3n+1) homologous series were investigated. Buckling of the (BiO2) layers in the structure of the n = 2 member occurs due to the ordering of alkaline- and alkaline-earth cations between two independent positions. The formation of the one-layer bismuthate was revealed by Electron Microscopy and XRPD studies. Both types of compounds are considered to be possible candidates for new superconducting materials among bismuthates. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. |

Abstract |
The ground-state energy of three-particle systems consisting of electrons and holes as found in semiconducting quantum wells is studied. The degree of confinement is determined by the quantum-well width and we can vary the dimensionality of the system from two to three dimensions. The energy levels of the system can further be altered by the application of an external magnetic field which is directed perpendicular to the well. |

Abstract |
We investigate the energy levels of the negatively and positively charged excitons (also called trions) in a 200 Angstrom wide GaAs quantum well in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. A comparison is made with the experimental results of Glasberg et al. (Phys. Rev. B. 59 (1999) R10 425) and of Yusa et al. (cond-mat/0103505). (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Microstructural investigations with transmission electron microscopy were carried out on quenched Ni-Ti alloys with 52 and 54.5 at% Ni. For the Ni52Ti48 specimen long time exposed diffraction patterns of a single grain show besides the expected reflections of the B2-phase, two sets of extra reflections in different zones. The first type of spots is explained by lattice displacement waves, which are regarded as precursors of the martensitic Ni-Ti phases, B 19' and R-phase, respectively. The second set of reflection with more diffuse intensity than the other reflections is related to Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation. For the Ni-richer Ni54.5Ti45.5 alloy only Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation are found but no precursors of the B 19'- and R-phase. |
