Title Ab initio study of the spectroscopy, kinetics, and thermochemistry of the C2N and CN2 molecules Type A1 Journal article

Abstract Several structures and electronic states of the C2N and CN2 molecules have been studied using complete active space SCF (CASSCF), multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), and coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) methods. Both molecules are very stable. Our best computed total atomization energies SIGMAD(e) are 288.6 +/- 2 kcal/mol for CN2, and 294.1 +/- 2 kcal/mol for C2N. The CNC and CCN structures for C2N are nearly isoenergetic. CNN(3PI) lies about 30 kcal/mol above NCN(3PI(g)), but has a high barrier towards interconversion and is therefore observed experimentally. Computed harmonic frequencies for CNN are sensitive to the correlation treatment: they are reproduced well using multireference methods as well as the CCSD(T) method. High spin contamination has a detrimental effect on computed harmonic frequencies at the CCSD(T) level.

Abstract Organic carbocyanine dye coatings have been analyzed by time-of-flight static secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-S-SIMS) using three types of primary ions: Ga+ operating at 25 keV, and Xe+ and SF5+ both operating at 9 keV. Secondary ion yields obtained with these three primary ions have been compared for coatings with different layer thickness, varying from (sub)-monolayer to multilayers, on different substrates (Si, Ag and AgBr cubic microcrystals). For (sub)-monolayers deposited on Ag, Xe+ and SF5+ primary ions generate similar precursor ion intensities, but with Ga+ slightly lower precursor ion intensities were obtained. Thick coatings on Ag as well as mono- and multilayers on Si produce the highest precursor and fragment ion intensities with the polyatomic primary ion. The yield difference between SF5+ and Xe+ can reach a factor of 6. In comparison with Ga+, yield enhancements by up to a factor of 180 are observed with SF5+. For the mass spectrometric analysis of dye layers on AgBr microcrystals, SF5+ again proves to be the primary ion of choice. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Abstract The technique of imaging time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and dual beam depth, profiling has been used to study the composition of the surface of tabular silver halide microcrystals. Analysis of individual microcrystals with a size well below 1 mum from a given emulsion is possible. The method is successfully applied for the characterization of silver halide microcrystals with subpercent global iodide concentrations confined in surface layers with a thickness below 5 nm. The developed TOF-SIMS analytical procedure is explicitly demonstrated for the molecular imaging of adsorbed thiocyanate layers (SCN) at crystal surfaces of individual crystals and for the differentiation of iodide conversion layers synthesized with KI and with AgI micrates (nanocrystals with a size between 10 and 50 nm). It can be concluded that TOF-SIMS as a microanalytical, surface-sensitive technique has some unique properties over other analytical techniques for the study of complex structured surface layers of silver halide microcrystals. This offers valuable information to support the synthesis of future photographic emulsions.

Abstract Time-of-flight static secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-S-SIMS) was used to characterize thin layers of oxy- and thiocarbocyanine dyes on Ag and Si. Apart from adduct ions a variety of structural fragment ions were detected for which a fragmentation pattern is proposed. Peak assignments were confirmed by comparing spectra of dyes with very similar structures. All secondary ions were assigned with a mass accuracy better than 50 ppm. The intensity of molecular ions as well as fragment ions has been studied as a function of the type of organic dye, the substrate, the layer thickness and the type of primary ion. A large yield difference of two orders of magnitude was observed between the precursor ions of cationic carbocyanine dyes and the protonated molecules of the anionic dyes. Fragment ions, on the other hand, yielded similar intensities for both types of dye. As the dye layers deposited on an Ag substrate yielded higher secondary ion intensities than those deposited on a Si substrate, the Ag metal clearly acts as a promoting agent for secondary ion formation. The effect was more pronounced for precursor signals than for fragment ions. The promoting effect decreased as the deposited layer thickness of the organic dye layer was increased.   Abstract Addition of a labile sulphur donor to light sensitive silver halide microcrystals results in the formation of a distribution of silver sulphide clusters on the crystal surface. These silver sulphide clusters enhance the efficiency of image formation during the photographic process. Their activity towards the capturing of light photons, however, is very critical to their size (aggregation number) and concentration. By incorporating gold ions into silver sulphide clusters it was possible to monitor the size distribution by measuring the amount of gold reacted. From these experiments, no evidence was found for aggregation of the reacted sulphur entities on the surface. The uptake of gold ions at different sulphur concentrations could well be fitted with a simulated size distribution when a catalyzed deposition of sulphur was assumed, with a reactivity of the surface equal to 1.0 % for the microcrystals studied. From a simulation of the silver sulphide cluster size distribution a correlation could also be found between increasing aggregation numbers and the absorption at increasing wavelengths in diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.

Abstract The six platinum group elements (Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt) can be determined in geological samples down to the μg kg−1 level, by using nickel sulphide fire assay and neutron activation of the residue ramaining after dissolution of the nickel sulphide button in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Losses for the platinum group elements during this dissolution step are usually insignificant, except when the elements are present at ultra-trace levels. The can be recovered from the filtrate by coprecipitation with tellerium. The latter approach also permits determination of silver, which is significantly lost in the hydrochloric acid treatment (recovery <98% instead of typically ≈ 10%). The coprecipitation with tellurium considerably improves the results for gold (recovery ≈ 95% instead of typically 75%).

Abstract Sensitive multi‐element analytical techniques were applied to determine 24 dissolved trace components in 25 different water samples from a 10 km2 zone in Brittany, France. Correspondence factor and multiple regression analyses showed that the elements considered are influenced mainly by the presence of: Fe‐Mn oxide accumulations, a local poly‐metallic sulfide mineralization, and non‐mineralized host rocks, agricultural activity and abundant organic material in local swamps. Via these numerical techniques the location of the poly‐metallic ore body can be derived from the data set.

Abstract Five geothermal waters from the Mons area (southern Belgium) have been studied: one natural hot spring at Stambruges, one stagnant warm water from the inclined tunnels at Baudour, and three thermal waters from the drillholes at St. Ghislain, Ghlin and Douvrain, originating from the carbonate/anhydrite-bearing Visean strata, at depths of ca. 2600, 1550 and 1300 m, respectively. Multielement chemical analysis of the filtered water and its suspended matter > 0.4 μm) was carried out by instrumental neutron activation. Temperature in depth, calculated using the silica (chalcedony) chemical geothermometer, ranged from 75 to 88°C, in good agreement with experimentally determined values. Na/K and Na/K/Ca geothermometers yieilded erratic results, as expected from the geological environment in the aquifer. From the analytical data it can be calculated that the thermal waters of St. Ghislain, Ghlin and Douvrain are not only saturated with respect to chalcedony, but also to anhydrite, calcite, fluorite, barite, strontianite, and possibly zinc silicate, iron (III) hydroxide or siderite, albite, microcline, gibbsite and kaolinite. They are oversaturated with respect to muscovite. Data are also presented for the other thermal waters, and a cold spring water (Claire Fontaine, Stambruges). The similar trace-element composition of the thermal waters can be explained by percolation of the water in the same distant recharge zone, from where it descends, becomes heated at depth and rises along collapse breccia, and locally (Baudour, Stambruges) along fissures. The uptake of higher amounts of Ca, Mg, Sr and sulfate in St. Ghislain and Ghlin, as compared to Douvrain and Baudour is correlated with the boundary between the non-dissolved and dissolved evaporitic zones. This boundary is situated between St. Ghislain and Douvrain, and is roughly parallel with the direction of the groundwater flow (WNW).

Abstract Sensitive multi-element analysis techniques were applied to water samples collected in the vicinity of a small Zn-Pb-Cu sulfide mineralization in the region of Menez-Albot (Finistère, France). The variation of the trace-element content along a local stream shows the presence of the mineralization, mainly through a simultaneous positive anomaly in solution for a group of about 10 elements (e.g. Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sb) which are connected with this type of mineralization. The anomaly decreases steeply due to the influx of swamp water rich in Fe, Mn and organic matter. The precipitation barrier is reflected in the stream sediment composition. Contamination from fertilizers was observed in some samples.
