Abstract: A Josephson phase shift can be induced in a Josephson junction by a strategically nearby pinned Abrikosov vortex (AV). For an asymmetric distribution of an imprinted phase along the junction (controlled by the position of the AV) such a simple system is capable of rectification of ac current in a broad and tunable frequency range. The resulting rectified voltage is a consequence of the directed motion of a Josephson antivortex which forms a pair with the AV when at local equilibrium. The proposed realization of the ratchet potential by an imprinted phase is more efficient than the asymmetric geometry of the junction itself, is easily realizable experimentally, and provides rectification even in the absence of an applied magnetic field.

Abstract: Using density-functional theory in combination with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we study the effect of the crystal lattice structure of organometallic perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 on its electronic transport properties. Both dispersive interactions and spin-orbit coupling are taken into account in describing structural and electronic properties of the system. We consider two different phases of the material, namely the orthorhombic and cubic lattice structures, which are energetically stable at low (< 160 K) and high (> 330 K) temperatures, respectively. The sizable geometrical differences between the two structures in term of lattice parameters, PbI6 octahedral tilts, rotation and deformations, have considerable impact on the transport properties of the material. For example, at zero bias and for all considered electron energies, the cubic phase has a larger transmission than the orthorhombic one, although both show similar electronic densities of states. Depending on the applied voltage, the current in the cubic system can be several orders of magnitude larger as compared to the one obtained for the orthorhombic sample. We attribute this enhancement in the transmission to the presence of extended states in the cubic phase due to the symmetrically shaped and ordered PbI6 octaherdra. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: Intermediate-state flux structures in mesoscopic type-I superconductors are studied within the Ginzburg-Landau theory. In addition to well-established tubular and laminar structures, the strong confinement leads to the formation of (i) a phase of singly quantized vortices, which is typical for type-II superconductors and (ii) a ring of a normal domain at equilibrium. The stability region and the formation process of these intermediate-state structures are strongly influenced by the geometry of the sample.

Abstract: Using density-functional theory in combination with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we study the effect of iodide/chloride and iodide/bromide mixing on the electronic transport in lead based organometallic perovskite CH3NH3PbI3, which is known to be an effective tool to tune the electronic and optical properties of such materials. We found that depending on the level and position of the halide mixing, the electronic transport can be increased by more than a factor of 4 for a given voltage biasing. The largest current is observed for small concentration of bromide substitutions located at the equatorial sites. However, full halide substitution has a negative effect on the transport properties of this material: the current drops by an order of magnitude for both CH3NH3PbCl3 and CH3NH3PbBr3 samples. Abstract: Static and dynamic properties of superconducting vortices in a superconducting stripe with a periodic array of weakly-superconducting (or normal metal) regions are studied in the presence of external magnetic and electric fields. The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory is used to describe the electronic transport, where the anisotropy is included through the spatially-dependent critical temperature T-c. Superconducting vortices penetrating into the weak-superconducting region with smaller T-c are more mobile than the ones in the strong superconducting regions. We observe periodic entrance and exit of vortices which reside in the weak link for some short interval. The mobility of the weakly-pinned vortices can be reduced by increasing the uniform applied magnetic field leading to distinct features in the voltage vs. magnetic field response of the system.

Abstract: The energy barrier which has to be overcome for a single vortex to enter or exit the sample is studied for thin superconducting disks, rings, and squares using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The shape and the height of the nucleation barrier is investigated for different sample radii and thicknesses and for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. It is shown that the London theory considerably overestimates (underestimates) the energy barrier for vortex expulsion (penetration). (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: Density-functional theory in combination with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism is used to study the effect of substitutional doping on the electronic transport properties of hydrogen passivated zig-zag graphene nanoribbon devices. B, N and Si atoms are used to substitute carbon atoms located at the center or at the edge of the sample. We found that Si -doping results in better electronic transport as compared to the other substitutions. The transmission spectrum also depends on the location of the substitutional dopants: for single atom doping the largest transmission is obtained for edge substitutions, whereas substitutions in the middle of the sample give larger transmission for double carbon substitutions. Abstract: Using first principles density functional theory in combination with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we study the effect of derivatization on the electronic and transport properties of C-60 fullerene. As a typical example, we consider [6,6]-phenyl-C-61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), which forms one of the most efficient organic photovoltaic materials in combination with electron donating polymers. Extra peaks are observed in the density of states (DOS) due to the formation of new electronic states localized at/near the attached molecule. Despite such peculiar behavior in the DOS of an isolated molecule, derivatization does not have a pronounced effect on the electronic transport properties of the fullerene molecular junctions. Both C-60 and PCBM show the same response to finite voltage biasing with new features in the transmission spectrum due to voltage induced delocalization of some electronic states. We also study the diffusive motion of molecular fullerenes in ethanol solvent and inside poly(3-hexylthiophene) lamella using reactive molecular dynamics simulations. We found that the mobility of the fullerene reduces considerably due to derivatization; the diffusion coefficient of C-60 is an order of magnitude larger than the one for PCBM. Abstract: Lithium-rich layered oxides such as Li₂MnO₃have shown great potential as cathodes in Li-ion batteries, mainly because of their large capacities. However, these materials still suffer from structural degradation as the battery is cycled, reducing the average voltage and capacity of the cell. The voltage fade is believed to be related to the migration of transition metals into the lithium layer, linked to the formation of O-O dimers with a short bond length, which in turn is driven by the presence of oxygen holes due to the participation of oxygen in the redox process. We investigate the formation of O-O dimers for partially charged O1-Li₂MnO₃using a first-principles density functional theory approach by calculating the reaction energy and kinetic barriers for dimer formation. Next, we perform similar calculations for partially charged O1-Li₂IrO₃, a Li-rich material for which the voltage fade was not observed during cycling. When we compare the stability of the oxygen framework, we conclude that the formation of O-O dimers is both thermodynamically and kinetically viable for O1-Li_0.5MnO₃. For O1-Li_0.5IrO₃, we observe that the oxygen lattice is much more stable, either returning to its original state when perturbed, or resulting in a structure with an O-O dimer that is much higher in energy. This can be explained by the mixed redox process for Li₂IrO₃, which is also shown from the calculated magnetic moments. The lack of O-O dimer formation in O1-Li_0.5IrO₃provides valuable insight as to why Li₂IrO₃does not demonstrate a voltage fade as the battery is cycled, which can be used to design Li-rich battery cathodes with an improved cycling performance.

Abstract: When slow ions incident on a surface are neutralized, the excess potential energy is passed on to an electron inside the surface, leading to emission of secondary electrons. The microscopic description of this process, as
well as the calculation of the secondary electron yield, is a challenging problem due to its complexity as well
as its sensitivity to surface properties. One of the first quantitative descriptions was articulated in the 1950s by
Hagstrum, who based his calculation on a parametrization of the density of states of the material. In this paper, we
present a model for calculating the secondary electron yield, derived from Hagstrum’s initial approach. We use
first-principles density functional theory calculations to acquire the necessary input and introduce the concept of
electron cascades to Hagstrum’s model in order to improve the calculated spectra, as well as remove its reliance
on fitting parameters. We apply our model to He+ and Ne+ ions incident on Ge(111) and Si(111) and obtain
yield spectra that match closely to the experimental results of Hagstrum.

Abstract: We have used high resolution Hall probe microscopy to image vortex-antivortex (V-AV) 'molecules' induced in superconducting Pb films by the stray fields from square arrays of ferromagnetic Co/Pt dots. We have directly observed spontaneous V-AV pairs and studied how they interact with added 'free' (anti)fluxons in an applied magnetic field. We observe a rich variety of subtle phenomena arising from competing symmetries in our system which can either drive added antivortices to join AV shells around nanomagnets or stabilise the translationally symmetric AV lattice between the dots. Added vortices annihilate AV shells, leading eventually to a stable 'nulling' state with no free fluxons, which should exhibit a strongly (field-)enhanced critical current. At higher densities we actually observe vortex shells around the magnets, stabilised by the asymmetric anti-pinning potential. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with Ginzburg-Landau calculations.

Abstract: We use atomistic-based simulations to investigate the behavior of ferromagnetic skyrmions being continuously compressed against a rigid wall under dc and ac drives. The compressed skyrmions can be annihilated close to the wall and form a conformal crystal with both a size and a density gradient, making it distinct from conformal crystals observed previously for superconducting vortices and colloidal particles. For both dc and ac driving, the skyrmions can move transverse to the compression direction due to a combination of density and size gradients. Forces in the compression direction are converted by the Magnus force into transverse motion. Under ac driving, the amount of skyrmion annihilation is reduced and we find a skyrmion Magnus ratchet pump. We also observe shear banding in which skyrmions near the wall move up to twice as fast as skyrmions further from the wall. When we vary the magnitude of the applied drive, we find a critical current above which the skyrmions are completely annihilated during a time scale that depends on the magnitude of the drive. By varying the magnetic parameters, we find that the transverse motion is strongly dependent on the skyrmion size. Smaller skyrmions are more rigid, which interferes with the size gradient and destroys the transverse motion. We also confirm the role of the size gradient by comparing our atomistic simulations with a particle-based model, where we find that the transverse motion is only transient. Our results are relevant for applications where skyrmions encounter repulsive magnetic walls, domain walls, or interfaces.
