Title Multiple Dirac particles in AA-stacked graphite and multilayers of graphene Type A1 Journal article
Year 2011 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
  Volume 83 Issue 16 Pages 165429-165429,9
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT); Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Using the tight-binding formalism we show that in the recently experimentally realized AA-stacked graphite in essence two types of massless relativistic Dirac particles are present with a different effective speed of light. We also investigate how the electronic structure evolves from a single graphene sheet into AA-stacked graphite. It is shown that in contrast to AB-stacked graphene layers, the spectrum of AA-stacked graphene layers can be considered as a superposition of single-layer spectra and only particles with a linear spectrum at the Fermi energy around the K point are present. From the evolution of the band overlap we show that 6 multilayers of AA-stacked graphene already behave as AA-stacked graphite. The evolution of the effective speeds of light of the Dirac particles to their bulk values shows exactly the same behavior. The tight-binding parameters we use to describe AA-stacked graphite and multilayers of graphene are obtained by ab initio calculations.

Title Metal to insulator transition in the n-type hollandite vanadate Pb1.6V8O16 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2010 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
  Volume 82 Issue 3 Pages 035122, 1-035122,5
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The transport and magnetic measurements of polycrystalline Pb1.6V8O16 hollandite reveal a concomitant metal to insulator and antiferromagnetic transition at TMI≈140 K. A clear localization is found below TMI, evidenced by a rapid increase in the absolute value of the negative Seebeck coefficient. The structural study by x-ray and transmission electron microscopy confirms the hollandite structure and shows that no structural transition occurs at TMI, ruling out a possible charge orbital ordering. The negative Seebeck coefficient observed from 50 K up to 900 K, with values reaching S=−38 μV K−1 at 900 K, is explained by the electron doping of ∼1.4e− in the V empty t2g orbitals responsible for the bad metal resistivity (ρ900 K∼2 mΩ cm). As this S value is close to that obtained by considering only the spin and orbital degeneracies, it is expected that |S| for such vanadates will not be sensitive at high temperature to the t2g band filling

Title Size mismatch : a crucial factor for generating a spin-glass insulator in manganites Type A1 Journal article
Year 1999 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B
  Volume 60 Issue 22 Pages 15214-15219
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Thr structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the highly mismatched perovskite oxides, Th(0.35)A(0.65)MnO(3), where Ais for the alkaline earth divalent cations (Ca, Ba, Sr), which are all characterized by the same large tolerance factor (t=0.934), have been investigated by using electron microscopy, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and magnetization. It is clearly established that a transition from ferromagnetic metallic towards spin-glass insulator samples is induced as the A-site cationic size mismatch is increased. Moreover, the magnetoresistance (MR) properties of these manganites are strongly reduced for the spin-glass insulators, demonstrating that the A-sire cationic disorder is detrimental for the colossal MR properties. Based on these results, a new electronic and magnetic diagram is established that shows that the A-site disorder, rather than the A-site average cationic size (or t) is the relevant factor for generating spin-glass insulating manganites.   Abstract The scattering of two-dimensional (2D) massless Dirac electrons is investigated in the presence of a random array of circular mass barriers. The inverse momentum relaxation time and the Hall factor are calculated and used to obtain parallel and perpendicular resistivity components within linear transport theory. We found a nonzero perpendicular resistivity component which has opposite sign for electrons in the different K and K′ valleys. This property can be used for valley filter purposes. The total cross section for scattering on penetrable barriers exhibits resonances due to the presence of quasibound states in the barriers that show up as sharp gaps in the cross section while for Schrödinger electrons they appear as peaks.

Abstract Fabry-Pérot resonances in the transmission through single and double, graphene-based barriers (of height V) and wells are investigated and their dependence on an applied perpendicular magnetic field. For rectangular barriers the conductance decreases with increasing magnetic field while the resonances weaken (become more pronounced) with increasing magnetic field for EF<V (EF>V). The position of the resonances exhibit a linear shift with magnetic field which move to lower (higher) energy for EF<V (EF>V). Compared to semielliptic- or Gaussian-shaped barriers they show a smaller number of resonances in the absence of a magnetic field and an overall lower conductance but the resonant structure is more pronounced. The conductance of asymmetric double barriers show two major regions of resonances while the symmetric ones show one, that of three asymmetric barriers three, and so on.

Abstract The hydrogen interstitial and the substitutional AlZn, GaZn, and InZn are all shallow donors in ZnO and lead to n-type conductivity. Although shallow donors are expected to repel each other, we show by first-principles calculations that in ZnO these shallow donor impurities attract and form a complex, leading to a donor level deep in the band gap. This puts a limit on the n-type conductivity of (Al,Ga,In)-doped ZnO in the presence of hydrogen.

Abstract The technique of beam optics is applied to the description of the wave function of Dirac electrons. This approach is illustrated by considering electron transmission through simple nonhomogeneous structures, such as flat and bent p-n junctions and superlattices. We found that a convex p-n junction compresses the beam waist, while a concave interface widens it without loosing its focusing properties. At a flat p-n junction the waist of the transmitted Gaussian beam can be narrowed or widened, depending on the angle of incidence. A general condition is derived for the occurrence of beam collimation in a superlattice which is less stringent than previous discussed.

Abstract Monte Carlo (MC) methods have a long-standing history as partners of molecular dynamics (MD) to simulate the evolution of materials at the atomic scale. Among these techniques, the uniform-acceptance force-bias Monte Carlo (UFMC) method [ G. Dereli Mol. Simul. 8 351 (1992)] has recently attracted attention [ M. Timonova et al. Phys. Rev. B 81 144107 (2010)] thanks to its apparent capacity of being able to simulate physical processes in a reduced number of iterations compared to classical MD methods. The origin of this efficiency remains, however, unclear. In this work we derive a UFMC method starting from basic thermodynamic principles, which leads to an intuitive and unambiguous formalism. The approach includes a statistically relevant time step per Monte Carlo iteration, showing a significant speed-up compared to MD simulations. This time-stamped force-bias Monte Carlo (tfMC) formalism is tested on both simple one-dimensional and three-dimensional systems. Both test-cases give excellent results in agreement with analytical solutions and literature reports. The inclusion of a time scale, the simplicity of the method, and the enhancement of the time step compared to classical MD methods make this method very appealing for studying the dynamics of many-particle systems.

Abstract Anharmonic effects in an atomic monolayer thin crystal with honeycomb lattice structure are investigated by analytical and numerical lattice dynamical methods. Starting from a semiempirical model for anharmonic couplings of third and fourth orders, we study the in-plane and out-of-plane (flexural) mode components of the generalized wave vector dependent Gruneisen parameters, the thermal tension and the thermal expansion coefficients as a function of temperature and crystal size. From the resonances of the displacement-displacement correlation functions, we obtain the renormalization and decay rate of in-plane and flexural phonons as a function of temperature, wave vector, and crystal size in the classical and in the quantum regime. Quantitative results are presented for graphene. There, we find that the transition temperature T-alpha from negative to positive thermal expansion is lowered with smaller system size. Renormalization of the flexural mode has the opposite effect and leads to values of T-alpha approximate to 300 K for systems of macroscopic size. Extensive numerical analysis throughout the Brillouin zone explores various decay and scattering channels. The relative importance of normal and umklapp processes is investigated. The work is complementary to crystalline membrane theory and computational studies of anharmonic effects in two-dimensional crystals.

Title Phonon dispersions and piezoelectricity in bulk and multilayers of hexagonal boron nitride Type A1 Journal article

Abstract A unified theory of phonon dispersions and piezoelectricity in bulk and multilayers of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is derived. The dynamical matrix is calculated on the basis of an empirical force constant model of intralayer valence and interlayer van der Waals interactions. Coulomb interactions are calculated by Ewalds method, adapted for the three-dimensional (3D) and the multilayer case. The deformation of the ionic charge distribution with long-wave lattice displacements is taken into account. Special attention is devoted to the nonanalytic long-range Coulomb contribution to the dynamical matrix which is different for the 3D crystal and the multilayer case. Consequently there is a splitting of the transverse optical (TO) and longitudinal optical (LO) phonon branches of E1u symmetry and a discontinuity of the A2u branch at the Γ point in 3D h-BN. No such splitting and discontinuity at Γ are present in multilayer crystals with a finite number N of layers. There a diverging bundle of N overbending optical phonon branches emerges from Γ. Borns long-wave theory is applied and extended for the study of piezoelectricity in layered crystals. While 3D h-BN and h-BN multilayers with an even number of layers (symmetry D6h) are not piezoelectric, multilayers with an uneven number of Nu layers (symmetry D3h) are piezoelectric; the piezoelectric coefficient e1,11 is inversely proportional to Nu.

Title Theory of rigid-plane phonon modes in layered crystals Type A1 Journal article

Abstract The lattice dynamics of low-frequency rigid-plane modes in metallic (graphene multilayers, GML) and in insulating (hexagonal boron-nitride multilayers, BNML) layered crystals is investigated. The frequencies of shearing and compression (stretching) modes depend on the layer number N and are presented in the form of fan diagrams. The results for GML and BNML are very similar. In both cases, only the interactions (van der Waals and Coulomb) between nearest-neighbor planes are effective, while the interactions between more distant planes are screened. A comparison with recent Raman scattering results on low-frequency shear modes in GML [Tan et al., Nat. Mater., in press, doi: 10.1038/nmat3245, (2012)] is made. Relations with the low-lying rigid-plane phonon dispersions in the bulk materials are established. Master curves, which connect the fan diagram frequencies for any given N, are derived. Static and dynamic thermal correlation functions for rigid-layer shear and compression modes are calculated. The results might be of use for the interpretation of friction force experiments on multilayer crystals.
