Title Direct Imaging of ALD Deposited Pt Nanoclusters inside the Giant Pores of MIL-101 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2016 Publication Particle and particle systems characterization Abbreviated Journal (up) Part Part Syst Char
  Volume 33 Issue 33 Pages 382-387
Keywords A1 Journal article; Engineering sciences. Technology; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract MIL-101 giant-pore metal-organic framework (MOF) materials have been loaded with Pt nanoparticles using atomic layer deposition. The final structure has been investigated by aberration-corrected annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy under strictly controlled low dose conditions. By combining the acquired experimental data with image simulations, the position of the small clusters within the individual pores of a metal-organic framework has been determined. The embedding of the Pt nanoparticles is confirmed by electron tomography, which shows a distinct ordering of the highly uniform Pt nanoparticles. The results show that atomic layer deposition is particularly well-suited for the deposition of individual nanoparticles inside MOF framework pores and that, upon proper regulation of the incident electron dose, annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy is a powerful tool for the characterization of this type of materials at a local scale.

Title Combined macroscopic, nanoscopic, and atomic-scale characterization of gold-ruthenium bimetallic catalysts for octanol oxidation Type A1 Journal article
Year 2016 Publication Particle and particle systems characterization Abbreviated Journal (up) Part Part Syst Char

Keywords A1 Journal article; Engineering sciences. Technology; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract A series of gold-ruthenium bimetallic catalysts of increasing Au:Ru molar ratios supported on a Ce0.62Zr0.38O2 mixed oxide are prepared and their structural and chemical features characterized by a combination of macroscopic and atomic-scale techniques based on scanning transmission electron microscopy. The influence of the temperature of the final reduction treatment used as activation step (350-700 degrees C range) is also investigated. The preparation method used allows catalysts to be successfully prepared where a major fraction of the metal nanoparticles is in the size range below 5 nm. The structural complexities characteristic of this type of catalysts are evidenced, as well as the capabilities and limitations of both the macroscopic and microscopic techniques in the characterization of the system of metal nanoparticles. A positive influence of the addition of Ru on both the resistance against sintering and the catalytic performance of the starting supported Au catalyst is evidenced.

Title Understanding CeO2-Based Nanostructures through Advanced Electron Microscopy in 2D and 3D Type A1 Journal article
Year 2019 Publication Particle and particle systems characterization Abbreviated Journal (up) Part Part Syst Char
  Volume 36 Issue 36 Pages 1800287
Keywords A1 Journal article; Engineering sciences. Technology; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Engineering morphology and size of CeO2-based nanostructures on a (sub)nanometer scale will greatly influence their performance; this is because of their high oxygen storage capacity and unique redox properties, which allow faster switching of the oxidation state between Ce4+ and Ce3+. Although tremendous research has been carried out on the shapecontrolled synthesis of CeO2, the characterization of these nanostructures at the atomic scale remains a major challenge and the origin of debate. The rapid developments of aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (AC-TEM) have pushed the resolution below 1 Å, both in TEM and in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) mode. At present, not only morphology and structure, but also composition and electronic structure can be analyzed at an atomic scale, even in 3D. This review summarizes recent significant achievements using TEM/ STEM and associated spectroscopic techniques to study CeO2-based nanostructures and related catalytic phenomena. Recent results have shed light on the understanding of the different mechanisms. The potential and limitations, including future needs of various techniques, are discussed with recommendations to facilitate further developments of new and highly efficient CeO2-based nanostructures.

Abstract Functional interfaces are at the core of research in the emerging field of domain boundary engineering where polar, conducting, chiral, and other interfaces and twin boundaries have been discovered. Ferroelectricity was found in twin walls of paraelectric CaTiO3. We show that the effect of functional interfaces can be optimized if the number of twin boundaries is increased in densely twinned materials. Such materials can be produced by shear in the ferroelastic phase rather than by rapid quench from the paraelastic phase.

Abstract It is shown that the infrared absorption spectra of pure type IaB diamonds, namely those that on cursory examination show only a B one-phonon component and neither A nor D, and the complete absence of a B' localized-mode platelet absorption peak, may be divided into two subgroups. The defect content of specimens of one of these subgroups has been studied before and comprises slip dislocations and voidites in random homogeneous distributions unconnected with the transformation of platelets to dislocation loops. Electron microscopy of a specimen of the other subgroup, which may be recognized by the presence of weak additional one-phonon absorption near 1100 cm-1, shows a population of dislocation loops resulting from the complete transformation of a former platelet population, plus accompanying voidites. It is suggested that the extra absorption is caused by the dislocation loops. Observation of the way in which loops and voidites are distributed suggests that voidite production and platelet transformation may not, after all, be interlinked phenomena, but parallel independent processes both promoted by the same unknown conditions.

Abstract The crystal structure of Au11In3 thin film alloys have been analysed by means of electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. The electron diffraction pattern and the high-resolution electron microscopy revealed that this structure was incommensurate and had a domain structure consisting of three kinds of structural unit. The approximant structural model, which is based on a h.c.p. stacking of the layers, is hexagonal with lattice parameters a = 7.612 nm and c = 0-478 nm.

Abstract Thin films of SrFeO3-x (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5) (SFO) grown on a (LaAlO3)(0.3) (SrAl0.5Ta0.5O3)(0.7) (LSAT) substrate by Pulsed laser deposition have been structurally investigated by electron diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy for different post-deposition oxygen treatments. During the deposition and post-growth oxidation, the oxygen-reduced SFO films accept extra oxygen along the tetrahedral layers to minimize the elastic strain energy. The oxidation process stops at a concentration SFO2.875 and/or SFO2.75 because a zero misfit with the LSAT substrate is reached. A possible growth mechanism and phase transition mechanism are suggested. The non-oxidized films exhibit twin boundaries having a local perovskite-type structure with a nominal composition close to SFO3.

Abstract Synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to characterize silicalite-1 zeolite crystallization from TEOS/TPAOH/water clear sol. SAXS patterns were recorded over a broad range of length scales, enabling the simultaneous monitoring of nanoparticles and crystals occurring at various stages of the synthesis. A simple two-population model accurately described the patterns. Nanoparticles were modeled by polydisperse coreshell spheres and crystals by monodisperse oblate ellipsoids. These models were consistent with TEM images. The SAXS results, in conjunction with in situ light scattering, showed that nucleation of crystals occurred in a short period of time. Crystals were uniform in size and shape and became increasingly anisotropic during growth. In the presence of nanoparticles, crystal growth was fast. During crystal growth, the number of nanoparticles decreased gradually but their size was constant. These observations suggested that the nanoparticles were growth units in an aggregative crystal growth mechanism. Crystals grown in the presence of nanoparticles developed a faceted habit and intergrowths. In the final stages of growth, nanoparticles were depleted. Concurrently, the crystal growth rate decreased significantly.

Title Preparation, microstructure characterization and catalytic performance of Cu/ZnO and ZnO/Cu composite nanoparticles for liquid phase methanol synthesis Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Physical chemistry, chemical physics Abbreviated Journal (up) Phys Chem Chem Phys

Abstract Stearate@Cu/ZnO nanocomposite particles with molar ratios of ZnO ∶ Cu = 2 and 5 are synthesized by reduction of the metalorganic Cu precursor [Cu{(OCH(CH3)CH2N(CH3)2)}2] in the presence of stearate@ZnO nanoparticles. In the case of ZnO ∶ Cu = 5, high-angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) combined with electron-energy-loss-spectroscopy (EELS) as well as attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy are used to localize the small amount of Cu deposited on the surface of 35 nm sized stearate@ZnO particles. For ZnO ∶ Cu = 2, the microstructure of the nanocomposites after catalytic activity testing is characterized by HAADF-STEM techniques. This reveals the construction of large Cu nanoparticles (2050 nm) decorated by small ZnO nanoparticles (35 nm). The catalytic activity of both composites for the synthesis of methanol from syn gas is evaluated.
