“Ground state and normal-mode spectra of a two-dimensional system of dipole particles confined in a parabolic trap”. Munarin FF, Ferreira WP, Farias GA, Peeters FM, Physical review : E : statistical, nonlinear, and soft matter physics 78, 031405 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.78.031405
Abstract: The ordered configurations of a monolayer of interacting magnetic dipoles confined in a circular parabolic potential are investigated as a function of the dipole moment of the particles. Despite the circular confinement, we find very asymmetric ordered structures like chains and Y-shaped configurations when a magnetic field is applied parallel to the plane of the particles. The normal-mode spectrum of the particles and its dependence on the magnetic field and the strength of the dipole moment of the particles are studied. The vibrational and rotational modes of the spectrum, which are associated with the stability of the system, are investigated in detail. The number of particles is varied and we found different ordering of the particles for different values of the dipole moment and the magnetic field. A ring structure with a large number of particles is observed for high values of the dipole moment of the particles.

“Carbon nanotube TiO2 hybrid films for detecting traces of O2”. Llobet E, Espinosa EH, Sotter E, Ionescu R, Vilanova X, Torres J, Felten A, Pireaux JJ, Ke X, Van Tendeloo G, Renaux F, Paint Y, Hecq M, Bittencourt C;, Nanotechnology 19, 375501 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1088/0957-4484/19/37/375501
Abstract: Hybrid titania films have been prepared using an adapted sol-gel method for obtaining well-dispersed hydrogen plasma-treated multiwall carbon nanotubes in either pure titania or Nb-doped titania. The drop-coating method has been used to fabricate resistive oxygen sensors based on titania or on titania and carbon nanotube hybrids. Morphology and composition studies have revealed that the dispersion of low amounts of carbon nanotubes within the titania matrix does not significantly alter its crystallization behaviour. The gas sensitivity studies performed on the different samples have shown that the hybrid layers based on titania and carbon nanotubes possess an unprecedented responsiveness towards oxygen (i.e. more than four times higher than that shown by optimized Nb-doped TiO(2) films). Furthermore, hybrid sensors containing carbon nanotubes respond at significantly lower operating temperatures than their non-hybrid counterparts. These new hybrid sensors show a strong potential for monitoring traces of oxygen (i.e. <= 10 ppm) in a flow of CO(2), which is of interest for the beverage industry.

“Formation of a complete solid solution between the triphylite and fayalite olivine structures”. Recham N, Casas-Cabanas M, Cabana J, Grey CP, Jumas J-C, Dupont L, Armand M, Tarascon J-M, Chemistry of materials 20, 6798 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1021/cm801817n
Abstract: The recent infatuation for LiFePO4 as positive electrode material in Li-ion batteries has prompted a renewed interest in olivine-type structures, with a view to enhance their conduction proper-ties. We show that the dual substitution of Li for Fe and of P for Si in the olivine LiFePO4 phase leads to a complete solid solution Li1-xFe1+xP1-xSixO4 as deduced from combined X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer, and NMR experiments. Our findings challenge the common belief that the anionic network cannot be substituted. Moreover. it is found that such a substitution promotes Li intersite mixing between the olivine M1 and M2 sites. Such mixing, together with the worsening of the conducting properties of the dually substituted samples, is believed to be responsible for the poor electrochemical performances of the member's series. Beyond x = 0.20, the samples were electrochemically inactive. While the current materials are disappointing application-wise, such a study provides clues to the rich chemistry remaining to be unveiled with olivine-type structures in particular and polyanionic compounds in general.

“Functionalization of MWCNTs with atomic nitrogen”. Ruelle B, Felten A, Ghijsen J, Drube W, Johnson RL, Liang D, Erni R, Van Tendeloo G, Sophie P, Dubois P, Godfroid T, Hecq M, Bittencourt C;, Micron 40, 85 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.micron.2008.01.003
Abstract: In this study of the changes induced by exposing MWCNTs to a nitrogen plasma, it was found by HRTEM that the atomic nitrogen exposure does not significantly etch the surface of the carbon nanotube (CNT). Nevertheless, the atomic nitrogen generated by a microwave plasma effectively grafts amine, nitrile, amide, and oxime groups onto the CNT surface, as observed by XPS, altering the density of valence electronic states, as seen in UPS. “Extended stability region for large bipolarons through interaction with multiple phonon branches”. Verbist G, Peeters FM, Devreese JT, Ferroelectrics 130, 27 (1992). http://doi.org/10.1080/00150199208019532
Abstract: The large (bi)polaron is investigated for the case where the electron interacts with multiple LO-phonon branches. Explicit expressions for the groundstate energy and the effective mass are obtained within the Feynman polaron model approximation and they are applied to the material SrTiO3. The results of an effective LO-phonon branch approximation are compared with the results in which all LO-phonon branches are explicitly included. We show how the stability region for large bipolaron formation is enlarged when the electrons interact with multiple LO-phonon branches. The possible relevance of this result for the high-T(c) superconductors is pointed out.

Abstract: A far-infrared absorption study of electrons in lightly-doped GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As superlattices is presented. Both weakly and strongly coupled superlattices are investigated, and the difference between intersubband transitions and transitions between extended minibands is demonstrated. At low temperatures, the absorption spectra are dominated by donor transitions. The 1s-2p(z) transition, which is intimately related to the intersubband transition, is observed. All experimental data are compared to an envelope function calculation for the miniband structure and a variational calculation for the donor energies. Excellent agreement between experiment and theory is achieved.

“Strong-coupling analysis of large bipolarons in 2 and 3 dimensions”. Verbist G, Smondyrev MA, Peeters FM, Devreese JT, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 45, 5262 (1992). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.45.5262
Abstract: In the limit of strong electron-phonon coupling, we use either a Pekar-type or an oscillator wave function for the center-of-mass coordinate and either a Coulomb or an oscillator wave function for the relative coordinate, and are able to reproduce all the results from the literature for the large-bipolaron binding energy. Lower bounds are constructed for the critical ratio eta(c) of dielectric constants below which bipolarons can exist. It is found that, in the strong-coupling limit, the stability region for bipolaron formation is much larger in two dimensions (2D) than in 3D. We introduce a model that combines the averaging of the relative coordinate over the asymptotically best wave function with a path-integral treatment of the center-of-mass motion. The stability region for bipolaron formation is increased compared with the full path-integral treatment at large values of the coupling constant alpha. The critical values are alpha(c) almost-equal-to 9.3 in 3D and alpha(c) almost-equal-to 4.5 in 2D. Phase diagrams for the presented models are also obtained in both 2D and 3D.

Abstract: Basic results concerning oxygen ordering in the superconducting compound YBa2Cu3Oz are briefly summarized. It is shown that, at equilibrium, only infinite-chain structures can be stabilized and those models based on hypothetical (and actually nonphysical) screened Coulomb interactions cannot produce stable ground states. It is suggested that diffraction data (neutrons, X-rays, electrons) from oxygen-lean samples are indicative of metastable displacive transformations, and are not directly related to oxygen ordering.

“Electrical and thermal-properties of a 2-dimensional electron-gas in a one-dimensional periodic potential”. Peeters FM, Vasilopoulos P, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 46, 4667 (1992). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.46.4667
Abstract: We investigate the influence of a periodic weak modulation along the x direction on the electrical and thermal properties of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The modulation lifts the degeneracy of the Landau levels and leads to one-dimensional magnetic bands whose bandwidth oscillates as a function of the magnetic field. At weak magnetic fields this gives rise to the Weiss oscillations in the magnetoresistance, discovered recently, which have a very weakly temperature-dependent amplitude and a period proportional to square-root n(e), when n(e) is the electron density. Diffusion-current contributions, proportional to the square of the bandwidth, dominate rho(xx), and collisional contributions, varying approximately as the square of the density of states, dominate rho(yy). The result is that rho(xx) and rho(yy) oscillate out of phase as observed. Asymptotic analytical expressions are presented for the conductivity tensor. Similar oscillations, of much smaller amplitude, occur in the thermodynamic quantities, such as the magnetization, the susceptibility, and the specific heat. We also predict oscillations in the Hall resistance, the cyclotron resonance position, the linewidth, as well as in the thermal conductivity and thermopower. The components of the thermal-resistance tensor have a magnetic-field dependence similar to that of the electrical-resistivity tensor.

Abstract: Hot-electron transport is studied for a two-dimensional electron gas coupled to longitudinal-optical phonons in crossed electric and magnetic fields. At low electric and high magnetic fields the electrons are accumulated, while at high electric fields they are in a streaming state. We develop a streaming-to-accumulation transition model and compare the results with that from a Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract: The structure of Ca0.85CuO2 was reexamined by means of electron diffraction and electron microscopy using the newly developed method of selective imaging in intergrowth structures in which the two substructures are based on different sublattices. The results of previous work are confirmed. Moreover, it is shown that two stacking variants and their twin related structures occur in the calcium substructure. The copper-oxygen substructure occurs in one variant only; it is often modulated by the various calcium arrangements, leading to phase disorder in its modulation pattern. It is shown that the ribbons of CuO4 clusters are presumably tilted with respect to the (010) plane.

Abstract: The high temperature phase of Ni1-xS has the NiAs-type structure. The coexistence of two superstructures, ''3a3a3c'' and ''2a2a3c'' with the basic phase is confirmed by means of electron diffraction. The 2a2a3c superstructure is studied by means of electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. A structure model is proposed based on the periodic insertion of stacking faults in the NiAs-type basic structure and the ordering of vacancies in alternate metal-atom layers. Microtwinning in very narrow slabs is found to be a main feature of the 2a2a3c regions and two defect models are discussed.

Abstract: We investigate the effects of the finite confining potential V0 on the absorption and emission scattering rates of electrons interacting with LO phonons for a cylindrical GaAs quantum wire. The emission rates are qualitatively similar to those of the 2D case. The absorption rates on the other hand exhibit two different regimes: 1) for a wire radius smaller than a certain value (80 Å in the case where V0 = 190 meV) the behavior is similar to the 2D and 3D analogues, but 2) for larger radius the absorption rates initially increase with increasing energy, reach a maximum value and then decrease monotonicaly. A complete study is made as a function of wire radius, and electron energy.

Abstract: The electro-phonon resonance effect is a consequence of a resonant interaction between two electric subbands mediated by an optical phonon. It occurs in a quasi-two-dimensional electron system each time the energy difference between two electric subbands equals the energy of a Lo phonon. We study the influence of this effect on the electron mobility by using the momentum balance equation. The temperature and electron density dependences of the resonances are studied in the linear and non-linear response regimes.

Abstract: Differential cross sections for neutron and x-ray scattering have been derived for the orientationally disordered phase of solid C60. Interaction centres are placed at nuclei and at the centres of interatomic bonds. Bragg and diffuse scattering cross sections, for single crystals and for powders, are formulated using symmetry-adapted rotator functions. Thermal averages are calculated taking account of crystal field effects. Thermally averaged orientational distribution functions have also been calculated.

Abstract: An electron-irradiation-induced transformation from cubic beta2 austenite to monoclinic 7M martensite was observed in situ under high resolution electron microscopy conditions in a thin foil of Ni63Al37 beta2 phase (B2, CsCl structure), with the start temperature of the martensitic transformation below but very close to room temperature. The structure of the martensite is consistent with thermoelastic or stress-induced martensite at this composition, including the existence of multiple stacking faults. The transformation is described by a gradual increase in the shear and shuffle amplitudes already existing in the precursor domains. Possible origins of the transformation are discussed.

Abstract: This HREM investigation focuses on the influence of point defects on the final epitaxial relation and atomic interface configuration in a CoSi2/Si(1 0 0) heterostructure. A two-step SPE-MBE grown CoSi2/Si(1 0 0) system is used and, by altering the number of deposited Co monolayers in the template layer, the point defect behavior is studied. We propose a film growth model in which the knowledge about the reconstructed (2 x 1) : Si(1 0 0) surface, the point defect behavior in the presence of an interface, especially a silicide interface, the migration of point defects through a lattice by formation of [1 0 0]-split interstitial (dumbbell) atomic configurations, and a new type of extended defect configurations in diamond type materials will all amalgamate. Abstract: The giant isotope effect on the ferro- and antiferroelectric transition temperature upon deuteration of hydrogen-bonded systems is well known experimentally since various decades. Yet, theoretically only recently a microscopic understanding of this effect has been achieved which, specifically, took into account the geometry of the O ... H ... O bond. The implications of this modeling are multiple as numerous hydrogen-bonded organic systems show the same effects as ferro- and antiferroelectrics, i.e., cooperative proton tunneling at a well-defined temperature.

Abstract: A method to correlate microstructure from cross-section transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations and transport properties of a single well characterized high-T-c artificial grain boundary junction is reported. A YBa2Cu3O7-delta 45 degrees twist junction exhibiting the typical phenomenology of high T-c Josephson weak links was employed. The TEM sample preparation is based on focused ion beam etching and allows to easily localize the electron transparent area on a microbridge. The reported technique opens clear perspectives in the determination of the microstructural origin of variations in Josephson junction properties, such as the spread in I-c and IcRN values and the presence of different transport regimes in nominally identical junctions. Abstract: YBa2Cu3O7-x artificial grain boundary Josephson junctions have been fabricated, employing a recently implemented biepitaxial technique. The grain boundaries can be obtained by controlling the orientation of the MgO seed layer and are characterized by a misalignment of the c-axes (45 degrees a-axis tilt or 45 degrees a-axis twist). These types of grain boundaries are still mostly unexplored. We carried out a complete characterization of their transport properties and microstructure. Junctions and de SQUIDs associated with these grain boundaries exhibit an excellent Josephson phenomenology and high values of the ICRN product and of the magnetic flux-to-voltage transfer parameter respectively. Remarkable differences in the transport parameters of tilt and twist junctions have been observed, which can be of interest for several applications. A maximum speed of Josephson vortices as calculated from the voltage step values of the order of 2 x 10(6) m s(-1) is obtained. These devices could also have some impact on experiments designed to study the symmetry of the order parameter, exploiting their microstructure and anisotropic properties. High-resolution electron microscopy showed the presence of perfect basal plane faced boundaries in the cross sections of tilt boundaries.

“Role of the defect microstructure on the electrical transport properties in undoped and Si-doped GaN grown by LP-MOVPE”. Farvacque JL, Bougrioua Z, Moerman I, Van Tendeloo G, Lebedev O, Physica: B : condensed matter

Abstract: Experimental results show that the room-temperature carrier mobility in bulk layers of undoped or Si-doped GaN grown by LP-MOVPE on sapphire substrate shows a sudden increase as soon as the carrier density exceeds a critical value of about 10(18) cm(-3). We show that such a behavior can be theoretically reproduced by assuming that the columnar structure i.e. the dislocation microstructure is responsible for internal electronic barriers. “Production of differently shaped multi-wall carbon nanotubes using various cobalt supported catalysts”. Piedigrosso P, Konya Z, Colomer J-F, Fonseca A, Van Tendeloo G, Nagy JB, Physical chemistry, chemical physics 2, 163 (2000). http://doi.org/10.1039/a905622j
Abstract: Catalytic synthesis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of multi-wall carbon nanotubes are presented. Silica, zeolite and alumina supported cobalt catalysts were prepared by different methods (impregnation and ion-adsorption precipitation) and were used to produce nanotubes. The synthesis was carried out in a fixed bed flow reactor and the process was optimized in order to produce carbon nanotubes on a gram scale. The influence of various parameters such as the method of catalyst preparation, the nature of the support, cobalt concentration and reaction conditions on the formation of nanotubes was investigated. The carbon deposits were measured and the quality of nanotubes was determined by low and high resolution TEM. Multi-wall straight and coiled nanotubes were found to be fairly regular with an average inner (outer) diameter of 4-7 nm (8-23 nm) and with lengths up to 0.1 mm.

“Microstructural characterization of diamond films deposited on c-BN crystals”. Nistor L, Buschmann V, Ralchenko V, Dinca G, Vlasov I, van Landuyt J, Fuess H, Diamond and related materials
T2 –, 10th European Conference on Diamond, Diamond-Like Materials, Nitrides, and Silicon Carbide (Diamond 1999), SEP 12-17, 1999, PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC 9, 269 (2000). http://doi.org/10.1016/S0925-9635(99)00246-0
Abstract: The morphology and structure of diamond films, deposited on cubic boron nitride (c-BN) crystals by microwave-plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, is studied by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The c-BN crystals, with sizes of 200 to 350 mu m and grown by a high-temperature/high-pressure technique, were embedded in a copper holder, and used as substrates in deposition runs of 15 min to 5 h. The nucleation centers for diamond appear as well-shaped cuboctahedral crystallites, having diameters of approximately 100 nm. With increasing deposition time the diamond crystallites grew larger, forming islands on the c-BN faces. In some cases, epitaxial growth was observed on the (111) c-BN faces where coalesced particles gave rise to very smooth regions. A number of diamond crystals with peculiar shapes are observed, such as a pseudo five-fold symmetry due to multiple twinning. Moreover, both randomly distributed carbon tubes, about 100 nn in diameter and 1 mu m in length, and spherically shaped features are observed in samples prepared under the typical conditions of diamond deposition, this effect being ascribed to the influence of plasma-sputtered copper contamination. Quite unusual diamond crystals with a deep, pyramidal-shaped hole in the middle grew on the copper substrate between the c-BN crystals. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
