Abstract The adsorption of CO2 on surfaces of graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), decorated with Fe atoms, are investigated using the self-consistent-charge density-functional tight-binding (SCC-DFTB) method, neglecting the heat effects. Fe ad-atoms are more stable when they are dispersed on hollow sites. They introduce a large density of states at the Fermi level (N-F); where keeping such density low would help in gas sensing. Furthermore, the Fe ad-atom can weaken the C=O double bonds of the chemisorbed CO2 molecule, paving the way for oxygen atoms to drain more charges from Fe. Consequently, chemisorption of CO2 molecules reduces both N-F and the conductance while it enhances the sensitivity with the increasing gas dose. Conducting armchair CNTs (ac-CNTs) have higher sensitivity than graphene and semiconducting zigzag CNTs (zz-CNT5). Comparative study of sensitivity of ac-CNT-Fe composite towards various gases (e.g., O-2, N-2, H-2, H2O, CO and CO2) has shown high sensitivity and selectivity towards CO, CO2 and H2O gases. Abstract Purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB) are known for their metabolic versatility and thrive as anoxygenic photoheterotrophs. In environmental engineering and resource recovery, cells would grow on mixtures of volatile fatty acids (VFA) generated by anaerobic fermentation of waste streams. In this study, we aim to better understand the behavior of Rhodospirillum rubrum, a model PNSB species, grown using multiple VFA as carbon sources. We highlighted that assimilation of individual VFA follows a sequential pattern. Based on observations in other PNSB, this seems to be specific to isocitrate lyase-lacking organisms. We hypothesized that the inhibition phenomenon could be due to the regulation of the metabolic fluxes in the substrate cycle between acetoacetyl-CoA and crotonyl-CoA. Developed macroscopic dynamic models showed a good predictive capability for substrate competition for every VFA mixture containing acetate, propionate, and/or butyrate. These novel insights provide valuable input for better design and operation of PNSB-based waste treatment solutions.

Abstract Graphene oxide can act as an amplification platform for the immobilization of a hybrid structure composed of tyrosinase (Tyr) and zinc oxide quantum dots (ZnO QDs). This article describes how this platform increases the sensitivity for the detection of hydroxylated polychlorobiphenyls (OH-PCBs). The adsorption of Tyr (with low isoelectric point) on the positively charged surface of ZnO QDs is based on electrostatic interactions. The scanning electron microscopic images and UVvis spectroscopic analysis demonstrated the adsorption of Tyr on ZnO QDs. The stepwise assembly process of the fabricated biosensor was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The synthesized ZnO QDs and graphene oxide were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic techniques. The determination of OH-PCBs was carried out by using square wave voltammetry over the concentration range of 2.827.65 μM with a detection limit of 0.15 μM with good reproducibility, selectivity and acceptable stability. The high value of surface coverage of ZnO QDs and small value of MichaelisMenten constant (View the MathML source) confirmed an excellent loading of the Tyr and a high affinity of the biosensor toward the detection of OH-PCBs. This biosensor and the described sensing platform offer a great potential for rapid, cost-effective and on-field analysis of OH-PCBs.

Abstract Oxygen deficient perovskites Sr0.75Y0.25Co1-xMnxO3-y, x=0.5 and 0.75, were prepared by using the citrate route at 1373-1573 K for 48 h. The cubic Pm-3m perovskite structure for x=0.5 was confirmed by electron diffraction study and refined using neutron powder diffraction (NPD) data. For x=0.75, the superstructure corresponding to a=root 2 x a(per), b=2 x a(per), c=root 2 x a(per) (a(0)b(-)b(-) tilt system, space group Imma) was revealed by electron diffraction. The solid solution Sr0.75-xCaxY0.25Co0.25Mn0.75O3-y, 0.1 <= x <= 0.6 and compound Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92 were prepared in air at 1573 K for 48 h. The crystal structure of Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92 was refined using NPD data (S.G. Pnma, a=5.36595(4), b=7.5091(6), c=5.2992(4) angstrom, R-p=0.057, R-wp=0.056, chi(2)=4.26). High-temperature thermal expansion properties of the prepared compounds were studied in air using both dilatometry and high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction data (HTXRPD). They expanding non-linearly at 298-1073 K due to the loss of oxygen at high temperatures. Calculated average thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) for Sr0.75Y0.25Co1-xMnxO3-y, x=0.5, 0.75 and Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92(1) are 15.5, 15.1, and 13.8 ppm K-1, respectively. Anisotropy of the thermal expansion along different unit cell axes was observed for Sr0.15Ca0.6Y0.25Co0.25Mn0.75O3-y, and Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92. Conductivity of Sr0.75Y0.25Co1-xMnxO3-y, x=0.5 and 0.75 increases with the temperature reaching 110 S/cm for x=0.5 and 44 S/cm for x=0.75 at 1173 K. Samples of Sr0.75-xCaxY0.25Co0.25Mn0.75O3-y, 0.1 <= y <= 0.6 were found to be n-type conductors at room temperature with the similar temperature dependence of the conductivity and demonstrated the increase of the sigma value from similar to 1 to similar to 50 S/cm as the temperature increases from 300 to 1173 K. Their conductivity is described in terms of the small polaron charge transport with the activation energy (E-p) increasing from 340 to 430 meV with an increase of the calcium content from x=0 to x=0.6. Abstract A series of perovskites Sr4−xLaxFe3ReO12 (x=0.0, 1.0, 2.0) has been prepared by wet chemistry methods. The structure analyses by powder X-ray and neutron diffraction and electron microscopy show that these compounds adopt simple perovskite structures without cation ordering over the B sites: tetragonal (I4/mcm) for x=0.0 and 1.0 and orthorhombic (Pbmn) for x=2.0. The oxidation states of the cations in the compound with x=0.0 appear to be Fe3+/4+ and Re7+ and decrease for both with La substitution as evidenced by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. All the compounds are antiferromagnetically ordered above room temperature, as demonstrated by Mössbauer spectroscopy and the magnetic structures, which were determined by powder neutron diffraction. The substitution of Sr by La strongly affects the magnetic properties with an increase of TN up to ∼750 K.

Abstract Magnetoelectric multiferroics showing coupling between polarization and magnetic order are attracting much attention. For instance, they could be used in memory devices. Metal-transition oxides are provided several examples of inorganic magnetoelectric multiferroics. In the present short review, spinel and delafossite chromites are described. For the former, an electric polarization is evidenced in the ferrimagnetic state for ACr2O4 polycrystalline samples (A=Ni, Fe, Co). The presence of a JahnTeller cation such as Ni2+ at the A site is shown to yield larger polarization values. In the delafossites, substitution by V3+ at the Cr or Fe site in CuCrO2 (CuFeO2) suppresses the complex antiferromagnetic structure at the benefit of a spin glass state. The presence of cation disorder, probed by transmission electron microscopy, favors relaxor-like ferroelectricity. The results on the ferroelectricity of ferrimagnets and insulating spin glasses demonstrate that, in this research field, transition-metal oxides are worth to be studied.

Abstract Single crystals of Bi3Mn1.9Te1.1O11 were prepared from NaCl+KCl flux. This compound adopts KSbO3-type crystal structure as evidenced by electron and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The three-dimensional channel structure is formed by corner-sharing octahedral (Mn0.63Te0.37)2O10 dimers and two identical (Bi1)4(Bi2)2 interpenetrating lattices. The intra-dimer Mn/TeMn/Te distances in Bi3Mn1.9Te1.1O11 are short and are consistent with weak metalmetal interactions. The mixed oxidation state of manganese and the edge-sharing octahedral features are confirmed by X-ray near edge absorption spectroscopy measurements, which indicate Bi3(MnIII1.1MnIV0.8)TeVI1.1O11 with 57.7% Mn3+ and 42.3% Mn4+. The partial substitution of Te for Mn perturbs long-range magnetic interactions, thereby destroying the ferromagnetic ordering found in Bi3Mn3O11 (TC=150 K).

Abstract We present an in situ transmission electron microscopy study on the half-doped bilayer manganite PrCa2Mn2O7 to reveal the rotation process of the orbital stripes. Between the reported initial and final ordering phases, we identified an intermediate state with two sets of satellite spots to bridge the 90° rotation of the orbital stripes. Furthermore, we determined that the rotation of the orbital stripes does not always occur. Some restricted conditions for the orbital rotation to occur were found and reasons are discussed.

Abstract This work reports the study of photoconductivity and visible light activated room temperature gas sensors properties of nanocrystalline ZnO thick films sensitized with colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs). Nanocrystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) was synthesized by the precipitation method. Colloidal CdSe quantum dots were obtained by high temperature colloidal synthesis. Sensitization was effectuated by three different procedures including direct adsorption of CdSe QDs stabilized with oleic acid on ZnO surface, anchoring to the ZnO surface through a bifunctional molecule of mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), and coating of CdSe QDs with a monolayer of MPA with subsequent adsorption on ZnO surface. Sensor measurements demonstrated that obtained QD CdSe/ZnO nanocomposites can be used for NO2 detection under visible (green) light illumination at room temperature without any thermal heating. Abstract When studying photocatalysis it is important to consider, beside the chemical approach, the engineering part related to process optimisation. To achieve this a fixed bed photocatalytic set-up consisting of different catalyst placings, in order to vary catalyst distribution, is studied. The use of a fixed quantity of catalyst placed packed or randomly distributed in the reactor, results in an almost double degradation for the distributed catalyst. Applying this knowledge leads to an improved performance with limited use of catalyst. A reactor only half filled with catalyst leads to higher degradation performance compared to a completely filled reactor. Taking into account this simple process optimisation by better distributing the catalyst a more sustainable photocatalytic air purification process is achieved. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract Airborne particulate matter (PM) includes semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), which can be deposited on vegetation matrices such as plant leaves. In alternative to air-point measurements or artificial passive substrates, leaf monitoring offers a cost-effective, time-integrating means of assessing local air quality. In this study, leaf washing solutions from ivy (Hedera hibernica) leaves exposed during one-month at different land use classes were explored via comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOFMS). The composition of leaf-deposited SVOCs, corrected for those of unexposed leaves, was compared against routinely monitored pollutants concentrations (PM10, PM2.5, O3, NO2, SO2) measured at co-located air monitoring stations. The first study on leaf-deposited SVOCs retrieved from washing solutions, herein reported, delivered a total of 911 detected compounds. While no significant land use (rural, urban, industrial, traffic, mixed) effects were observed, increasing exposure time (from one to 28 days) resulted in a higher number and diversity of SVOCs, suggesting cumulative time-integration to be more relevant than local source variations between sites. After one day, leaf-deposited SVOCs were mainly due to alcohols, N-containing compounds, carboxylic acids, esters and lactones, while ketones, diketones and hydrocarbons compounds gained relevance after one week, and phenol compounds after one month. As leaf-deposited SVOCs became overall more oxidized throughout exposure time, SVOCs transformation or degradation at the leaf surface is suggested to be an important phenomenon. This study confirmed the applicability of GCxGC-TOFMS to analyze SVOCs from leaf washing solutions, further research should include validation of the methodology and comparison with atmospheric organic pollutants.

Abstract A new oxychloride Pb5Fe3TiO11Cl has been synthesized using the solid state method. Its crystal and magnetic structure was investigated in the 1.5550 K temperature range using electron diffraction, high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy, atomic resolution energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. At room temperature Pb5Fe3TiO11Cl crystallizes in the P4/mmm space group with the unit cell parameters a=3.91803(3) Å and c=19.3345(2) Å. Pb5Fe3TiO11Cl is a new n=4 member of the oxychloride perovskite-based homologous series An+1BnO3n−1Cl. The structure is built of truncated Pb3Fe3TiO11 quadruple perovskite blocks separated by CsCl-type Pb2Cl slabs. The perovskite blocks consist of two layers of (Fe,Ti)O6 octahedra sandwiched between two layers of (Fe,Ti)O5 square pyramids. The Ti4+ cations are preferentially located in the octahedral layers, however, the presence of a noticeable amount of Ti4+ in a five-fold coordination environment has been undoubtedly proven using neutron powder diffraction and atomic resolution compositional mapping. Pb5Fe3TiO11Cl is antiferromagnetically ordered below 450(10) K. The ordered Fe magnetic moments at 1.5 K are 4.06(4) μB and 3.86(5) μB on the octahedral and square-pyramidal sites, respectively.

Abstract La3Ni2SbO9 adopts a perovskite-related structure in which the six-coordinate cation sites are occupied alternately by Ni2+ and a disordered arrangement of Ni2+/Sb5+. A polycrystalline sample has been studied by neutron diffraction in applied magnetic fields of 0 <= H/kOe <= 50 at 5 K. In 0 kOe, weak magnetic Bragg scattering consistent with the adoption of a G-type ferrimagnetic structure is observed; the ordered component of the magnetic moment was found to be 0.89(7) mu(B) per Ni2+ cation. This increased to 1.60(3) mu(B) in a field of 50 kOe. Transmission electron microscopy revealed variations in the Ni:Sb ratio across crystallites of the sample. It is proposed that these composition variations disrupt the magnetic superexchange interactions within the compound, leading to domain formation and a reduced average moment. The application of a magnetic field aligns the magnetisation vectors across the crystal and the average moment measured by neutron diffraction increases accordingly. The role played by variations in the local chemical composition in determining the magnetic properties invites comparison with the behaviour of relaxor ferroelectrics. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. Abstract Novel indium oxide (In2O3) nanobricks have been prepared by template-less and surfactant-free hydrothermal synthesis method and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FESEM). The synthesized In2O3 nanobricks were successfully immobilized on the surface of glassy carbon electrode for the detection of Parabens (butylparaben). Owing to the unique structure and intriguing properties of these In2O3 nanobricks, the nanostructured thin-film electrode has shown an obvious electrocatalytic activity for the detection of butylparaben (BP). The detection limit (LOD) was estimated as 3 s/m and the sensitivity (LOQ) was calculated as 10 s/m and were found to be 0.08 μM and 0.26 μA μM−1 cm−2 respectively. This sensor showed high sensitivity compared with the reported electrochemical sensors for the detection of BP. The fabricated sensor was successfully applied for the detection of butyl paraben in real cosmetic samples with good recovery ranging from 96.0 to 100.3%.

Abstract Diesel soot emissions deteriorate the appearance of architectural building materials by soot fouling. This soot deposition devalue the aesthetic value of the building. A solution to counteract this problem is applying titanium dioxide on building materials. TiO2 can provide air-purifying and self-cleaning properties due to its photocatalytic activity. In literature, photocatalytic soot oxidation is observed on glass or silicon substrates. However, degradation of soot by photocatalysis was not yet investigated on cementitious samples (mortar, concrete) although it is one of the most frequently used building materials. In this study, photocatalytic soot oxidation by means of TiO2 coated cementitious samples is addressed. The soot removal capacity of four types of TiO2 layers, coated on mortar samples, is evaluated by means of two detection methods. The first method is based on colorimetric measurements, while the second method uses digital image processing to calculate the area of soot coverage. The experimental data revealed that cementitious materials coated with commercially available TiO2 exhibited self-cleaning properties as it was found that all coated samples were able to remove soot. The P25 coating gave the best soot degradation performance, while the Eoxolit product showed the slowest soot degradation rate. In addition, gas chromatography measurements in a closed chamber experiment with P25 confirmed that complete mineralization of about 60% of the soot was obtained within 24 hours since CO2 was the sole observed oxidation product. Due to its realistic approach, this study proves that photocatalytic soot removal on TiO2 coated cementitious surfaces is possible in practice, which is an important step towards the practical application of self-cleaning building materials.

Abstract Catalytic methods for the production of carbon nanotubules have been developed based on the decomposition of acetylene on well-dispersed metal particles strongly adsorbed on a support. Cobalt on silica was found to be the best catalyst-support combination for the production of graphitic tubules. The method for the catalyst preparation and the reaction conditions were optimized. Straight and coiled carbon tubules were obtained with inner and outer diameter of 3-7 and 15-20 nm, respectively, and up to 30 mum in length. These nanotubules were not coated by amorphous carbon. Traces of amorphous carbon could be removed by hydrogen. High resolution electron microscopy images and electron diffraction patterns of the straight nanotubules were similar to those obtained by the arc-discharge method. Coiled nanotubules were revealed by TEM to be regular polygonized helices where the bends are caused by pairs of pentagon-heptagon carbon rings among the hexagonal network.

Abstract Several structures and electronic states of the C2N and CN2 molecules have been studied using complete active space SCF (CASSCF), multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), and coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) methods. Both molecules are very stable. Our best computed total atomization energies SIGMAD(e) are 288.6 +/- 2 kcal/mol for CN2, and 294.1 +/- 2 kcal/mol for C2N. The CNC and CCN structures for C2N are nearly isoenergetic. CNN(3PI) lies about 30 kcal/mol above NCN(3PI(g)), but has a high barrier towards interconversion and is therefore observed experimentally. Computed harmonic frequencies for CNN are sensitive to the correlation treatment: they are reproduced well using multireference methods as well as the CCSD(T) method. High spin contamination has a detrimental effect on computed harmonic frequencies at the CCSD(T) level.

Abstract Nanocrystalline indium oxide films with extremely small grains in range of 7-40 nm are prepared by sol-gel method. The influence of grain size on the sensitivity of indium oxide to nitrogen dioxide in low concentration at room temperature is investigated under the UV illumination and without illumination. The sensitivity increases with the decrease of grain sizes when In2O3 is illuminated while in the dark In2O3 with intermediate grain size exhibits the highest response. An explanation of the different behavior of the In2O3 with different grain size sensitivity to NO2 under illumination and in the dark is proposed. We demonstrate that pulsed illumination may be used for NO2 detection at room temperature that significantly reduces the power consumption of sensor. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A continuous search for improved immobilization and sensing strategies of aptamers on transducer surfaces resulted in the strategy presented in this article. The strategy is based on the covalent attachment of gold nanoparticles on the surface of glassy carbon electrodes through sulfhydryl-terminated monolayer, acting as a glue to connect AuNPs on the electrode. The covalently attached gold nanoparticles modified glassy carbon electrodes have been applied for the efficient immobilization of thiolated ssDNA probes, with a surface coverage of about 8.54 × 1013 molecules cm−2 which was 7-fold higher than that on the electrochemically deposited gold nanoparticles. Consequently, improved sensitivity, good reproducibility and stability are achieved for electrochemical aptasensor. Combined with the high affinity and specificity of an aptamer, a simple, novel, rapid, sensitive and label-free electrochemical aptasensor was successfully fabricated for ofloxacin (OFL) detection. The linear dynamic range of the sensor varies between 5 × 10−8 to 2 × 10−5 M OFL with a detection limit of 1 × 10−9 M OFL. A potential application in environmental monitoring was demonstrated by using this sensing strategy for the determination of OFL in (experimentally spiked) real samples such as tap water and effluent of sewage treatment plant. The proposed nanoaptasensor combines the advantages of the covalent attachment of neatly arranged AuNPs (enlarged active surface area and strengthened electrochemical signal) and the elimination of labels for the amplified detection of OFL, with the covalent attachment of highly specific aptamers to the surface of the modified electrode.

Abstract A polycrystalline sample of perovskite-like Sr3Fe2TeO9 has been prepared in a solid-state reaction and studied by a combination of electron microscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction. The majority of the reaction product is shown to be a trigonal phase with a 2:1 ordered arrangement of Fe3+ and Te6+ cations. However, the sample is prone to nano twinning and tetragonal domains with a different pattern of cation ordering exist within many crystallites. Antiferromagnetic ordering exists in the trigonal phase at 300 K and Sr3Fe2TeO9 is thus the first example of a perovskite with 2:1 trigonal cation ordering to show long-range magnetic order. At 300 K the antiferromagnetic phase coexists with two paramagnetic phases which show spin -glass behaviour below similar to 80 K. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc.

Abstract A polycrystalline sample of SrLa2Ni2TeO9 has been synthesized using a standard ceramic method and characterized by neutron diffraction, magnetometry and electron microscopy. The compound adopts a monoclinic, perovskite-like structure with space group P2(1)/n in and unit cell parameters a=5.6008(1), b = 5.5872(1), c=7.9018(2) angstrom, p=90.021(6)degrees at room temperature. The two crystallographically-distinct B sites are occupied by Ni2+ and Te6+ in ratios of 83:17 and 50:50. Both ac and dc magnetometry suggest that the compound is a spin glass below 35 K but the neutron diffraction data show that some regions of the sample are antiferromagnetic. Electron microscopy revealed twinning on a nanoscale and local variations in composition. These defects are thought to be responsible for the presence of two distinct types of antiferromagnetic ordering. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc.
