Abstract |
On the basis of the momentum-balance equation derived from the Boltzmann equation in which electron interactions with impurities and acoustic and optic phonons are included, we examine the dependence of the resistivity in graphene on temperature and electron density. Simple analytical expressions for the different contributions to the resistivity are obtained. Our results reproduce recent experimental findings and we are able to understand the different temperature dependence of the resistivity for low and high density samples. |

Abstract |
Coupled shallow impurity states in a freestanding semiconductor nanowire and in a semiconductor nanowire surrounded by a metallic gate are studied within the effective-mass approximation. Bonding and antibonding states are found due to the coupling of the two impurities, and their energy converges with increasing distance di between the two impurities. The dependences of the binding energy on the wire radius R, the distance di between the two impurities, and the impurity radial position in the nanowire are examined. |

Abstract |
A perpendicular electric field applied to multilayers of graphene modifies the electronic structure near the K point and may induce an energy gap in the electronic spectrum. This gap is tunable by the gate voltage and its size depends on the number of layers. We use a tight-binding approach to calculate the band structure and include a self-consistent calculation in order to obtain the density of charge carriers. Results are presented for systems consisting of three and four layers of graphene. The effect of the circular asymmetry of the band structure on the gap is critically examined. |

Abstract |
The metal-insulator (MI) transition in epitaxial thin films of La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 (LCMO) is accompanied by the appearance of an intrinsic electrical nonlinearity. The latter, probed by electrical third harmonic voltage, U3, or resistance, R3=dU3/dJ, is drastically enhanced in the vicinity of the MI transition, TMI=267 K. Applied magnetic field, B=5 T, suppresses the nonlinearity, resulting in a huge nonlinear CMR3(TMI)~105%. R3 shows a peculiar low-frequency (1 kHz) dependence, R3~(-0)n, with exponent, n, changing across the MI transition from n~1,52 for TTMI to n=1 (T<TMI). The observed electrical nonlinearity in LCMO reflects the behavior of correlated polarons, the number of which dramatically enhances in the vicinity of TMI. We argued that correlated polarons, considered as electric-elastic quadrupoles, provide a nonlinear (quadratic) coupling to the electric field, yielding a third harmonic electric nonlinearity in LCMO. The reference film of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO), a prototypic double exchange system with second-order phase transition, is characterized as a linear metallic material in the whole range of temperatures (T=10400 K), magnetic fields (B=05 T), and frequencies (=11000 Hz). |

Abstract |
An epitaxially grown heterostructure consisting of alternating layers of LaMnO3 (8 unit cells) and SrMnO3 (4 unit cells) on a SrTiO3 substrate has been studied by a combination of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) on an atomic scale. Excitation edges of all elements are captured with subnanometer spatial accuracy, and parametrized to obtain chemical profiles. The fine-edge structure of O K and Mn L-2,L-3 edges are interpreted as signatures of the local electronic structure and show a spatial modulation of the concentration of holes with O 2p character. The chemical concentration is found to be different for the bottom and top interface of a SrMnO3 layer. HRTEM complements the EELS results and confirms the asymmetry of the interfaces. Abstract |
Homogenized Ni39.6Mn47.5T12.9 material was investigated by different electron microscopy techniques. Apart from the martensite precursor distortions typical for B2 phase alloys undergoing a thermoelastic martensitic transformation upon cooling, coherent dodecahedron-shaped precipitates with sizes between 20 and 100 nm and faceted by lozenge shapes of {110}-type planes are observed. Selected-area and microdiffraction patterns reveal an overall unit cell with a size of 3 x 3 x 3 units of the bcc lattice of the matrix and a body-centred symmetry without screw axes. Finally a ternary gamma-brass-type atomic structure of space group 14(3) over bar m is suggested for these precipitates in accordance with the obtained symmetry constraints, the energy-dispersive X-ray measurements and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. This is the first time this type of structure is found in an alloy completely consisting of transition-metal elements. |

Abstract |
The tunneling coupling in three vertically stacked (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum rings is investigated. With increasing inter-ring separation (d), we find that the nonuniform strain results into a crossing of the lowest-energy electron states. Strain is also responsible for an increase in the ground electron energy above the level in the single quantum ring. The ground hole energy level exhibits decrease when d decreases, which is typical for antibonding states in an unstrained structure. These effects lead to a local maximum in the dependence of the ground-state exciton energy on d. Our theoretical results compare well with recent photoluminescence measurements but deviate considerably from the calculations for flat bands in quantum-ring molecules. We conclude that the nonuniform character of the strain distribution gives rise to a peculiar exciton hybridization in self-assembled quantum-ring molecules. |

Abstract |
Within the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) theory we studied the creation of phase-slip lines and the interplay with a vortex lattice in a finite-length superconducting thin stripe with finite-size normal metal leads. In zero magnetic field and with increasing transport current phase-slip lines appear across the sample leading to distinct jumps in the current-voltage characteristics. When a magnetic field is applied, the moving vortex lattice becomes rearranged by the external current and fast and slow moving vortex channels are formed. Curved vortex channels are observed near the normal contacts. We found the remarkable result that at small applied magnetic field the normal-state transition current is increased as compared to the one at zero magnetic field. This effect is more pronounced for larger values of the parameter in the TDGL formalism. This unusual field-induced increase in the critical current is a consequence of the nonuniform distribution of the current in the sample. |

Abstract |
The novel synthesis of a polymeric interface grown from the surface of bright fluorescent nanodiamonds is reported. The polymer enables bioorthogonal attachment of various molecules by click chemistry; the particles are resistant to nonspecific protein adsorption and show outstanding colloidal stability in buffers and biological media. The coating fully preserves the unique optical properties of the nitrogen-vacancy centers that are crucial for bioimaging and sensoric applications. |

Abstract |
We investigate localized electron and hole states in parabolic quantum dots of biased graphene bilayers in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. These quantum dots can be created by means of nanostructured gates or by position-dependent doping, which can create a gap in the otherwise gapless dispersion of a graphene bilayer. Numerical results show the energy levels of confined electrons and holes as a function of the dot parameters and the magnetic field. Remarkable crossings of energy levels are found. |

Abstract |
Strongly confined nano-systems, such as one-dimensional nanowires, feature deviations in their structural, electronic and optical properties from the corresponding bulk. In this work, we investigate the behavior of long-wavelength, optical phonons in vertical arrays of InAs nanowires by Raman spectroscopy. We attribute the main changes in the spectral features to thermal anharmonicity, due to temperature effects, and rule out the contribution of quantum confinement and Fano resonances. We also observe the appearance of surface optical modes, whose details allow for a quantitative, independent estimation of the nanowire diameter. The results shed light onto the mechanisms of lineshape change in low-dimensional InAs nanostructures, and are useful to help tailoring their electronic and vibrational properties for novel functionalities. |

Abstract |
The Zener tunneling current flowing through a biased, abrupt p-n junction embedded in a cylindrical silicon nanowire is calculated. As the band gap becomes indirect for sufficiently thick wires, Zener tunneling and its related transitions between the valence and conduction bands are mediated by short-wavelength phonons interacting with mobile electrons. Therefore, not only the high electric field governing the electrons in the space-charge region but also the transverse acoustic (TA) and transverse optical (TO) phonons have to be incorporated in the expression for the tunneling current. The latter is also affected by carrier confinement in the radial direction and therefore we have solved the Schrodinger and Poisson equations self-consistently within the effective mass approximation for both conduction and valence band electrons. We predict that the tunneling current exhibits a pronounced dependence on the wire radius, particularly in the high-bias regime. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
The properties of a two-dimensional electron are investigated in the presence of a circular step magnetic-field profile. Both electrons with parabolic dispersion as well as Dirac electrons with linear dispersion are studied. We found that in such a magnetic quantum dot no electrons can be confined. Nevertheless close to the Landau levels quasibound states can exist with a rather long lifetime. |

Abstract |
This work compares the morphology of gold nanoparticles (NPs) produced at room temperature on single-crystalline (MgO nanocubes and plates) and amorphous (carbon/glass plates) substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The results show that similar deposition and nucleation rates (>5×1013 cm−2 s−1) are achieved irrespective of the nature of the substrate. Instead, the shape of NPs is substrate dependent, i.e., quasispheres and faceted NPs in amorphous and single-crystalline substrates, respectively. The shape of the latter is octahedral for small NPs and truncated octahedral for large ones, with the degree of truncation being well explained using the Wulff-Kaichew theorem. Furthermore, epitaxial growth at room temperature is demonstrated for single-crystalline substrate. The large fraction of ions having energies higher than 200 eV and the large flux of species arriving to the substrate (1016 at. cm−2 s−1) involved in the PLD process are, respectively, found to be responsible for the high nucleation rates and epitaxial growth at room temperature. |

Abstract |
We present the design, construction, and performance of a low-temperature scanning Hall probe microscope with submicron lateral resolution and a large scanning range. The detachable microscope head is mounted on the cold flange of a commercial 3He-refrigerator (Oxford Instruments, Heliox VT-50) and operates between room temperature and 300 mK. It is fitted with a three-axis slip-stick nanopositioner that enables precise in situ adjustment of the probe location within a 6×6×7 mm3 space. The local magnetic induction at the sample surface is mapped with an easily changeable microfabricated Hall probe [typically GsAs/AlGaAs or AlGaAs/InGaAs/GaAs Hall sensors with integrated scanning tunnel microscopy (STM) tunneling tips] and can achieve minimum detectable fields 10 mG/Hz1/2. The Hall probe is brought into very close proximity to the sample surface by sensing and controlling tunnel currents at the integrated STM tip. The instrument is capable of simultaneous tunneling and Hall signal acquisition in surface-tracking mode. We illustrate the potential of the system with images of superconducting vortices at the surface of a Nb thin film down to 372 mK, and also of labyrinth magnetic-domain patterns of an yttrium iron garnet film captured at room temperature. |

Abstract |
Antagonistic symmetries of superconducting polygons and their induced multivortex states in a homogeneous magnetic field may lead to the appearance of antivortices in the vicinity of the superconducting/normal-state boundary (where mesoscopic confinement is particularly strong). Resulting vortex-antivortex (V-Av) molecules match the sample symmetry but are extremely sensitive to defects and fluctuations and remain undetected experimentally. Here we show that V-Av states can reappear deep in the superconducting state due to an array of perforations in a polygonal setting, surrounding a central hole. Such states are no longer caused by the symmetry of the sample but rather by pinning itself, which prevents the vortex-antivortex annihilation. As a result, even micron size, clearly spaced V-Av molecules can be stabilized in large mesoscopic samples. |

Abstract |
We study single- and two-electron parabolic quantum dots in the presence of linear Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit interactions. Contributions of both types of spin-orbit coupling are investigated in the context of the spin polarization of the system at high magnetic fields. We demonstrate that for negative Landé factors the effect of the Dresselhaus coupling is suppressed at high magnetic field, which for structures without inversion asymmetry leads to a completely spin-polarized system and a strict antisymmetry of the wave functions with respect to the interchange of spatial-electron coordinates. For negative Landé factor the Rashba coupling is preserved at high field and consequently the spin polarization of the systems as well as the spatial antisymmetry of the two-electron wave function remain approximate. |

Abstract |
The structural properties of a binary colloidal quasi-one-dimensional system confined in a narrow channel are investigated through modified Monte Carlo simulations. Two species of particles with different magnetic moment interact through a repulsive dipole-dipole force are confined in a quasi-one-dimensional channel. The impact of three decisive parameters (the density of particles, the magnetic-moment ratio, and the fraction between the two species) on the transition from disordered phase to crystal-like phases and the transitions among the different mixed phases are summarized in a phase diagram. |

Abstract |
Cerium-doped manganite thin films were grown epitaxially by pulsed laser deposition at 720 °C and oxygen pressure pO2=125 Pa and were subjected to different annealing steps. According to x-ray diffraction (XRD) data, the formation of CeO2 as a secondary phase could be avoided for pO28 Pa. However, transmission electron microscopy shows the presence of CeO2 nanoclusters even in those films which appear to be single phase in XRD. With O2 annealing, the metal-to-insulator transition temperature increases, while the saturation magnetization decreases and stays well below the theoretical value for electron-doped La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 with mixed Mn3+/Mn2+ valences. The same trend is observed with decreasing film thickness from 100 to 20 nm, indicating a higher oxygen content for thinner films. Hall measurements on a film which shows a metal-to-insulator transition clearly reveal holes as dominating charge carriers. Combining data from x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, for determination of the oxygen content, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), for determination of the hole concentration and cation valences, we find that with increasing oxygen content the hole concentration increases and Mn valences are shifted from 2+ to 4+. The dominating Mn valences in the films are Mn3+ and Mn4+, and only a small amount of Mn2+ ions can be observed by XAS. Mn2+ and Ce4+ XAS signals obtained in surface-sensitive total electron yield mode are strongly reduced in the bulk-sensitive fluorescence mode, which indicates hole-doping in the bulk for those films which do show a metal-to-insulator transition. |
