Abstract | We propose two coupled electron-hole sheets of few-layer graphene as a new nanostructure to observe superfluidity at enhanced densities and enhanced transition temperatures. For ABC stacked few-layer graphene we show that the strongly correlated electron-hole pairing regime is readily accessible experimentally using current technologies. We find for double trilayer and quadlayer graphene sheets spatially separated by a nano-thick hexagonal boron-nitride insulating barrier, that the transition temperature for electron-hole superfluidity can approach temperatures of 40 K.

Abstract | The concept of protecting groups, widely used in organic chemistry, has been applied for the synthesis of Au-silica Janus stars, in which gold branches protrude from one half of Au-silica Janus spheres. This configuration opens up new possibilities to apply the plasmonic properties of gold nanostars, as well as a variety of chemical functionalizations on the silica component.

Abstract | We have performed a first-principles study of the p- and n-type conductivity in CuIn1−xGaxSe2 due to native point defects, based on the HSE06 hybrid functional. Band alignment shows that the band gap becomes larger with x due to the increasing conduction band minimum, rendering it hard to establish n-type conductivity in CuGaSe2. From the defect formation energies, we find that In/GaCu is a shallow donor, while VCu, VIn/Ga and CuIn/Ga act as shallow acceptors. Using the total charge neutrality of ionized defects and intrinsic charge carriers to determine the Fermi level, we show that under In-rich growth conditions InCu causes strongly n-type conductivity in CuInSe2. Under increasingly In-poor growth conditions, the conductivity type in CuInSe2 alters to p-type and compensation of the acceptors by InCu reduces, as also observed in photoluminescence experiments. In CuGaSe2, the native acceptors pin the Fermi level far away from the conduction band minimum, thus inhibiting n-type conductivity. On the other hand, CuGaSe2 shows strong p-type conductivity under a wide range of Ga-poor growth conditions. Maximal p-type conductivity in CuIn1−xGaxSe2 is reached under In/Ga-poor growth conditions, in agreement with charge concentration measurements on samples with In/Ga-poor stoichiometry, and is primarily due to the dominant acceptor CuIn/Ga.

Abstract | Efforts to replace noble-metal catalysts by low-cost alternatives are of constant interest. The organometallic, non-aqueous wet-chemical synthesis of various hitherto unknown nanocrystalline Ni/Ga intermetallic materials and the use of NiGa for the selective semihydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes are reported. Thermal co-hydrogenolysis of the all-hydrocarbon precursors [Ni(COD)(2)] (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and GaCp* (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) in high-boiling organic solvents mesitylene and n-decane in molar ratios of 1 : 1, 2 : 3 and 3 : 1 yields the nano-crystalline powder materials of the over-all compositions NiGa, Ni2Ga3 and Ni3Ga, respectively. Microwave induced co-pyrolysis of the same precursors without additional hydrogen in the ionic liquid [BMIm][BF4] (BMIm = 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium) selectively yields the intermetallic phases NiGa and Ni3Ga from the respective 1 : 1 and 3 : 1 molar ratios of the precursors. The obtained materials are characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), IR, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The single-source precursor [Ni(GaCp*)(PMe3)(3)] with a fixed Ni : Ga stoichiometry of 1 : 1 was employed as well. In comparison with the co-hydrogenolytic dual precursor source approach it turned out to be less practical due to inefficient nickel incorporation caused by the parasitic formation of stable [Ni(PMe3)(4)]. The use of ionic liquid [BMIm][BF4] as a non-conventional solvent to control the reaction and stabilize the nanoparticles proved to be particularly advantageous and stable colloids of the nanoalloys NiGa and Ni3Ga were obtained. A phase-selective Ni/Ga colloid synthesis in conventional solvents and in the presence of surfactants such as hexadecylamine (HDA) was not feasible due to the undesired reactivity of HDA with GaCp* leading to inefficient gallium incorporation. Recyclable NiGa nanoparticles selectively semihydrogenate 1-octyne and diphenylacetylene (tolan) to 1-octene and diphenylethylene, respectively, with a yield of about 90% and selectivities of up to 94 and 87%. Ni-NPs yield alkanes with a selectivity of 97 or 78%, respectively, under the same conditions.

Abstract | The formation of a 3D network composed of free standing and interconnected Pt nanowires is achieved by a two-step method, consisting of conformal deposition of Pt by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on a forest of carbon nanotubes and subsequent removal of the carbonaceous template. Detailed characterization of this novel 3D nanostructure was carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The characterization showed that this pure 3D nanostructure of platinum is self-supported and offers an enhancement of the electrochemically active surface area by a factor of 50.

Abstract | Using reactive molecular dynamics simulations, the melting behavior of nickelcarbon nanoclusters is examined. The phase diagrams of icosahedral and Wulff polyhedron clusters are determined using both the Lindemann index and the potential energy. Formulae are derived for calculating the equilibrium constants and the solid and liquid fractions during a phase transition, allowing more rational determination of the melting temperature with respect to the arbitrary Lindemann value. These results give more insight into the properties of nickelcarbon nanoclusters in general and can specifically be very useful for a better understanding of the synthesis of carbon nanotubes using the catalytic chemical vapor deposition method.

Abstract | Atomic layer deposition (ALD) enables the conformal coating of porous materials, making the technique suitable for pore size tuning at the atomic level, e.g., for applications in catalysis, gas separation and sensing. It is, however, not straightforward to obtain information about the conformality of ALD coatings deposited in pores with diameters in the low mesoporous regime (<10 nm). In this work, it is demonstrated that in situ synchrotron based grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) can provide valuable information on the change in density and internal surface area during ALD of TiO2 in a porous titania film with small mesopores (3-8 nm). The results are shown to be in good agreement with in situ X-ray fluorescence data representing the evolution of the amount of Ti atoms deposited in the porous film. Analysis of both datasets indicates that the minimum pore diameter that can be achieved by ALD is determined by the size of the Ti-precursor molecule.

Abstract | A new, single-step protocol for wrapping individual nanosized β-casein micelles with silica is presented. This biomolecule-friendly synthesis proceeds at low protein concentration at almost neutral pH, and makes use of sodium silicate instead of the common silicon alkoxides. This way, formation of potentially protein-denaturizing alcohols can be avoided. The pH of the citrate-buffered synthesis medium is close to the isoelectric point of β-casein, which favours micelle formation. A limited amount of sodium silicate is added to the protein micelle suspension, to form a thin silica coating around the β-casein micelles. The size distribution of the resulting proteinsilica structures was characterized using DLS and SAXS, as well as 1H NMR DOSY with a dedicated pulsed-field gradient cryo-probehead to cope with the low protein concentration. The degree of silica-condensation was investigated by 29Si MAS NMR, and the nanostructure was revealed by advanced electron microscopy techniques such as ESEM and HAADF-STEM. As indicated by the combined characterization results, a silica shell of 2 nm is formed around individual β-casein micelles giving rise to separate protein coresilica shell nanoparticles of 17 nm diameter. This alcohol-free method at mild temperature and pH is potentially suited for packing protein molecules into bio-compatible silica nanocapsules for a variety of applications in biosensing, therapeutic protein delivery and biocatalysis.

Abstract | A plasma enhanced-chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) route to Fe2O3-based materials on Al2O3(0001) single crystals at moderate growth temperatures (200-400 degrees C) is reported. The use of the fluorinated Fe(hfa)(2)TMEDA (hfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionate; TMEDA = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) molecular precursor in Ar/O-2 plasmas enabled an in situ F-doping of iron oxide matrices, with a fluorine content tunable as a function of the adopted preparative conditions. Variations of the thermal energy supply enabled control of the system phase composition, resulting in gamma-Fe2O3 at 200 degrees C and alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures at higher deposition temperatures. Notably, at 400 degrees C the formation of highly oriented alpha-Fe2O3 nanocolumns characterized by an epitaxial relation with the Al2O3(0001) substrate was observed. Beside fluorine content, phase composition and nano-organization, even the system optical properties and, in particular, energy gap values, could be tailored by proper modifications of processing parameters.

Abstract | Diatoms are unicellular microalgae that self-assemble an intricate porous silica cell wall, called frustule. Diatom frustules possess a unique combination of physical and chemical properties (chemical inertness, high mechanical strength, large surface area, low density, good porosity and highly ordered features on the nano-to-micro scale) making diatom frustules suited for many nanotechnological applications. For most proposed applications the organic material covering the frustules needs to be removed. In this paper we investigate the effect of different frustule cleaning methods (drying, autoclavation, SDS/EDTA treatment, H2O2 treatment and HNO3 treatment) and subsequent heat treatment at different temperatures (105 °C, 350 °C, 550 °C and 750 °C) on the material characteristics of the diatom Pinnularia sp. Material characteristics under study are morphology, surface area, pore size, elemental composition and organic content. The cleaned Pinnularia frustules are subsequently investigated as adsorbents to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution.

Abstract | This study is focused on thermoresponsive glycogen-graft-poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazolines), a new group of nanostructured hybrid dendrimeric stimuli-responsive polymers connecting the body's own biodegradable polysaccharidic dendrimer glycogen with the widely tuneable thermoresponsive behavior of polypeptide-analogic poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazolines), which are known to be biocompatible. Glycogen-graft-poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazolines) were prepared by a simple one-pot two-step procedure involving cationic ring-opening polymerization of 2-alkyl-2-oxazolines followed by termination of the living cationic ends with sodium glycogenate. As confirmed by light and X-ray scattering, as well as cryo-transmission electron microscopy, the grafted dendrimer structure allows easy adjustment of the cloud point temperature, the concentration dependence and nanostructure of the self-assembled phase separated polymer by crosstalk during graft composition, the graft length and the grafting density, in a very wide range.

Abstract | The pyrochlore compounds Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 show an exotic form of magnetism called the spin ice state, resulting from the interplay between geometrical frustration and ferromagnetic coupling. A fascinating feature of this state is the appearance of magnetic monopoles as emergent excitations above the degenerate ground state. Over the past years, strong effort has been devoted to the investigation of these monopoles and other properties of the spin ice state in bulk crystals. Here, we report the fabrication of Ho2Ti2O7 thin films using pulsed laser deposition on yttria-stabilized ZrO2 substrates. We investigated the structural properties of these films by X-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy, and the magnetic properties by vibrating sample magnetometry at 2 K. The films not only show a high crystalline quality, but also exhibit the hallmarks of a spin ice: a pronounced magnetic anisotropy and an intermediate plateau in the magnetization along the [111] crystal direction.

Abstract | We show that bulk semiconductor materials do not allow perfectly complementary p- and n-channel tunnel field-effect transistors (TFETs), due to the presence of a heavy-hole band. When tunneling in p-TFETs is oriented towards the gate-dielectric, field-induced quantum confinement results in a highest-energy subband which is heavy-hole like. In direct-bandgap IIIV materials, the most promising TFET materials, phonon-assisted tunneling to this subband degrades the subthreshold swing and leads to at least 10x smaller on-current than the desired ballistic on-current. This is demonstrated with quantum-mechanical predictions for p-TFETs with tunneling orthogonal to the gate, made out of InP, In0.53Ga0.47As, InAs, and a modified version of In0.53Ga0.47As with an artificially increased conduction-band density-of-states. We further show that even if the phonon-assisted current would be negligible, the build-up of a heavy-hole-based inversion layer prevents efficient ballistic tunneling, especially at low supply voltages. For p-TFET, a strongly confined n-i-p or n-p-i-p configuration is therefore recommended, as well as a tensily strained line-tunneling configuration. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract | We report an innovative method to explore the optimal experimental settings to detect light atoms from scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images. Since light elements play a key role in many technologically important materials, such as lithium-battery devices or hydrogen storage applications, much effort has been made to optimize the STEM technique in order to detect light elements. Therefore, classical performance criteria, such as contrast or signal-to-noise ratio, are often discussed hereby aiming at improvements of the direct visual interpretability. However, when images are interpreted quantitatively, one needs an alternative criterion, which we derive based on statistical detection theory. Using realistic simulations of technologically important materials, we demonstrate the benefits of the proposed method and compare the results with existing approaches.

Abstract | We study the resistivity scaling in nanometer-sized metallic wires due to surface roughness and grain-boundaries, currently the main cause of electron scattering in nanoscaled interconnects. The resistivity has been obtained with the Boltzmann transport equation, adopting the relaxation time approximation of the distribution function and the effective mass approximation for the conducting electrons. The relaxation times are calculated exactly, using Fermi's golden rule, resulting in a correct relaxation time for every sub-band state contributing to the transport. In general, the relaxation time strongly depends on the sub-band state, something that remained unclear with the methods of previous work. The resistivity scaling is obtained for different roughness and grain-boundary properties, showing large differences in scaling behavior and relaxation times. Our model clearly indicates that the resistivity is dominated by grain-boundary scattering, easily surpassing the surface roughness contribution by a factor of 10. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract | The diffusive motion of metal nanoparticles Au and Ag on monolayer and between bilayer heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides and graphene are investigated in the framework of density functional theory. We found that the minimum energy barriers for diffusion and the possibility of cluster formation depend strongly on both the type of nanoparticle and the type of monolayers and bilayers. Moreover, the tendency to form clusters of Ag and Au can be tuned by creating various bilayers. Tunability of the diffusion characteristics of adatoms in van der Waals heterostructures holds promise for controllable growth of nanostructures. (C) 2014 Author(s). Abstract | This work presents a detailed analysis of the microstructure and the composition of our record Cu 2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe)-CdS-ZnO solar cell with a total area efficiency of 9.7%. The average composition of the CZTSe crystallites is Cu 1.94 Zn 1.12Sn0.95Se3.99. Large crystals of ZnSe secondary phase (up to 400 nm diameter) are observed at the voids between the absorber and the back contact, while smaller ZnSe domains are segregated at the grain boundaries and close to the surface of the CZTSe grains. An underlying layer and some particles of Cu xSe are observed at the Mo-MoSe2-Cu2ZnSnSe4 interface. The free surface of the voids at the back interface is covered by an amorphous layer containing Cu, S, O, and C, while the presence of Cd, Na, and K is also observed in this region.

Abstract | Uniform-acceptance force-bias Monte Carlo (fbMC) methods have been shown to be a powerful technique to access longer timescales in atomistic simulations allowing, for example, phase transitions and growth. Recently, a new fbMC method, the time-stamped force-bias Monte Carlo (tfMC) method, was derived with inclusion of an estimated effective timescale; this timescale, however, does not seem able to explain some of the successes the method. In this contribution, we therefore explicitly quantify the effective timescale tfMC is able to access for a variety of systems, namely a simple single-particle, one-dimensional model system, the Lennard-Jones liquid, an adatom on the Cu(100) surface, a silicon crystal with point defects and a highly defected graphene sheet, in order to gain new insights into the mechanisms by which tfMC operates. It is found that considerable boosts, up to three orders of magnitude compared to molecular dynamics, can be achieved for solid state systems by lowering of the apparent activation barrier of occurring processes, while not requiring any system-specific input or modifications of the method. We furthermore address the pitfalls of using the method as a replacement or complement of molecular dynamics simulations, its ability to explicitly describe correct dynamics and reaction mechanisms, and the association of timescales to MC simulations in general.

Abstract | We report an atomic layer epitaxial growth of Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) thin films of SrO(SrTiO3)(n) (n = infinity, 2, 3, 4) by means of metalorganic aerosol deposition (MAD). The films are grown on SrTiO3(001) substrates by means of a sequential deposition of Sr-O/Ti-O-2 atomic monolayers, monitored in-situ by optical ellipsometry. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveal the RP structure with n = 2-4 in accordance with the growth recipe. RP defects, observed by TEM in a good correlation with the in-situ ellipsometry, mainly result from the excess of SrO. Being maximal at the film/substrate interface, the SrO excess rapidly decreases and saturates after 5-6 repetitions of the SrO(SrTiO3)(4) block at the level of 2.4%. This identifies the SrTiO3 substrate surface as a source of RP defects under oxidizing conditions within MAD. Advantages and limitations of MAD as a solution-based and vacuum-free chemical deposition route were discussed in comparison with molecular beam epitaxy. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract | A one-dimensional, implicit particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision model is used to simulate the plasma kinetic properties at a steady state in a parallel-plate direct current argon glow microdischarge under various operating conditions, such as driving voltage (301000 V) and gap size (101000 µm) at atmospheric pressure. First, a comparison between rf and dc modes is shown for the same pressure, driving voltage and gap spacing. Furthermore, the effect of gap size scaling (in the range of 101000 µm) on the breakdown voltage, peak electron density and peak electron current density at the breakdown voltage is examined. The breakdown voltage is lower than 150 V in all gaps considered. The microdischarge is found to have a neutral bulk plasma region and a cathode sheath region with size varying with the applied voltage and the discharge gap. In our calculations, the electron and ion densities are of the order of 10181023 m−3, which is in the glow discharge limit, as the ionization degree is lower than 1% . The electron energy distribution function shows a two-energy group distribution at a gap of 10 µm and a three-energy group distribution at larger gaps such as 200 µm and 1000 µm, emphasizing the importance of the gap spacing in dc microdischarges.

Abstract | In metallized film capacitors, there exists an air gap of about 0.2 μm between the films, with a pressure ranging generally from 130 atm. Because of the created potential difference between the two films, a microdischarge is formed in this gap. In this paper, we use an implicit particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision simulation method to study the discharge properties in this direct-current microdischarge with 0.2 μm gap in a range of different voltages and pressures. The discharge process is significantly different from a conventional high pressure discharge. Indeed, the high electric field due to the small gap sustains the discharge by field emission. At low applied voltage (~15 V), only the electrons are generated by field emission, while both electrons and ions are generated as a stable glow discharge at medium applied voltage (~50 V). At still higher applied voltage (~100 V), the number of electrons and ions rapidly multiplies, the electric field reverses, and the discharge changes from a glow to an arc regime.

Abstract | In this paper we study two cold atmospheric pressure plasma jets, operating in Ar + 2% air, with a different electrode geometry but with the same power dissipated in the plasma. The density profiles of the biomedically active NO and O species throughout the plasma jet, previously obtained by laser diagnostics, are calculated by means of a zero-dimensional semi-empirical reaction kinetics model. A good agreement between the calculated and measured data is demonstrated. Furthermore, the most probable spatial power distribution in an RF driven plasma jet is obtained for the first time by comparing measured and calculated species density profiles. This was possible due to the strong effect of the power distribution on the NO and O density profiles. In addition the dominant reaction pathways for both the NO and the O species are identified. The model allows us to obtain key information on the reactive species production inside the jet, which is difficult to access by laser diagnostics in a coaxial geometry. Finally, we demonstrate that water impurities in the order of 100 ppm in the gas feed can have a significant effect on the spatial distribution of the NO and O density.

Abstract | The pinning mechanism of MOCVD-grown YBCO coated conductors with Y2O3 precipitates was investigated by angle-resolved transport measurement of Je in a wide range of temperature and magnetic fields. Aside from the Y2O3 nanoprecipitates, a-axis grains and threading dislocation along the c-axis were found in the YBCO layer. The Y2O3 precipitates are less effective pinning centers at lower temperature. The tapes with precipitates show a higher anisotropy with larger J(c) at H parallel to ab than H parallel to c. This behavior was attributed to the preferred alignment of the nanoprecipitates along the ab-plane.

Abstract | The interfacial atomic structure of a metallic LaNiO3/LaAlO3 superlattice grown on a LaSrAlO4 substrate was investigated using a combination of atomically resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) at the Al K, Al L2,3, Sr L2,3, Ni L2,3, La M4,5, and O K edges as well as hybridization mapping of selected features of the O K-edge fine structure. We observe an additional La1−xSrxAl1−yNiyO3 layer at the substrate-superlattice interface, possibly linked to diffusion of Al and Sr into the growing film or a surface reconstruction due to Sr segregation. The roughness of the LaNiO3/LaAlO3 interfaces is found to be on average around one pseudocubic unit cell. The O K-edge EELS spectra revealed reduced spectral weight of the prepeak derived from Ni-O hybridized states in the LaNiO3 layers. We rule out oxygen nonstoichiometry of the LaNiO3 layers and discuss changes in the Ni-O hybridization due to heterostructuring as possible origin. |

Abstract | The recent demonstration of electron vortex beams has opened up the new possibility of studying orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the interaction between electron beams and matter. To this aim, methods to analyze the OAM of an electron beam are fundamentally important and a necessary next step. We demonstrate the measurement of electron beam OAM through a variety of techniques. The use of forked holographic masks, diffraction from geometric apertures, and diffraction from a knife edge and the application of an astigmatic lens are all experimentally demonstrated. The viability and limitations of each are discussed with supporting numerical simulations.

Abstract | By considering a cylindrically symmetric generalization of a plane wave, the first-order Born approximation of screened Coulomb scattering unfolds two new dimensions in the scattering problem: transverse momentum and orbital angular momentum of the incoming beam. In this paper, the elastic Coulomb scattering amplitude is calculated analytically for incoming Bessel beams. This reveals novel features occurring for wide-angle scattering and quantitative insights for small-angle vortex scattering. The result successfully generalizes the well-known Rutherford formula, incorporating transverse and orbital angular momentum into the formalism.

Abstract | Electron vortex beams have been predicted to enable atomic scale magnetic information measurement, via transfer of orbital angular momentum. Research so far has focused on developing production techniques and applications of these beams. However, methods to measure the outgoing orbital angular momentum distribution are also a crucial requirement towards this goal. Here, we use a method to obtain the orbital angular momentum decomposition of an electron beam, using a multipinhole interferometer. We demonstrate both its ability to accurately measure orbital angular momentum distribution, and its experimental limitations when used in a transmission electron microscope.

Abstract | Freestanding silicene is predicted to display comparable electronic properties as graphene. However, the yet synthesized silicenelike structures have been only realized on different substrates which turned out to exhibit versatile crystallographic structures that are very different from the theoretically predicted buckled phase of freestanding silicene. This calls for a different approach where silicene is stabilized using very weakly interacting surfaces. We propose here a route by using graphene bilayer as a scaffold. The confinement between the flat graphene layers results in a planar clustering of Si atoms with small buckling, which is energetically unfavorable in vacuum. Buckled hexagonal arrangement of Si atoms similar to freestanding silicene is observed for large clusters, which, in contrast to Si atoms on metallic surfaces, is only very weakly van der Waals coupled to the graphene layers. These clusters are found to be stable well above room temperature. Our findings, which are supported by density-functional tight-binding calculations, show that intercalating bilayer graphene with Si is a favorable route to realize silicene.
