Abstract: The conventional approach to object reconstruction through electron tomography is to reduce the three-dimensional problem to a series of independent two-dimensional slice-by-slice reconstructions. However, at atomic resolution the image of a single atom extends over many such slices and incorporating this image as prior knowledge in tomography or depth sectioning therefore requires a fully three-dimensional treatment. Unfortunately, the size of the three-dimensional projection operator scales highly unfavorably with object size and readily exceeds the available computer memory. In this paper, it is shown that for incoherent image formation the memory requirement can be reduced to the fundamental lower limit of the object size, both for tomography and depth sectioning. Furthermore, it is shown through multislice calculations that high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy can be sufficiently incoherent for the reconstruction of single element nanocrystals, but that dynamical diffraction effects can cause classification problems if more than one element is present. Abstract: We deposited La2-xGdxZr2O7 seed layers by a chemical solution method on a Ni-5%W substrate to study the influence of these layers on the growth process of a 60 nm-thick La2Zr2O7 layer. We measured the performances of these new buffer layers integrated in a coated conductor with a 300 nm-thick Y0.5Gd0.5Ba2Cu3O7-x layer. For the seed layers{,} we considered two different gadolinium contents (x = 0.2 and x = 0.8) and three different thicknesses for these compositions (20 nm{,} 40 nm{,} and 60 nm). The most promising buffer layer stacks are those with 20 nm of the La1.8Gd0.2Zr2O7 layer or La1.2Gd0.8Zr2O7. Indeed the La2-xGdxZr2O7/La2Zr2O7 films are highly textured{,} similar to a 100 nm-thick La2Zr2O7 layer{,} but their roughness is four times lower. Moreover they contain less and smaller pores in the seed layer than a pure La2Zr2O7 layer. The surface of La2Zr2O7 is also homogenous and crystalline with an orientation deviation from the ideal ?011? (100) direction below 10[degree]. With the 20 nm La2-xGdxZr2O7 seed layers we obtain in the coated conductors an efficiently textured transfer with no gradual degradation from the substrate throughout the superconducting layer. The highest Tc and Jc values are achieved with the La1.8Gd0.2Zr2O7 layer and are{,} respectively{,} 91 K and 1.4 MA cm-2. This trend seems to be due to an improvement of the surface quality of the Ni5%W substrate by the addition of a thin seed layer. Our results offer the potential of the La2-xGdxZr2O7 seed layers as promising alternatives for the classic Ni-5%W/LZO/CeO2/YBCO architectures.

Abstract: By taking advantage of the attractive features in terms of gain, position and energy resolution of the 2D-THCOBRA detector, a new large area Full-Field X-ray Fluorescence Imaging (FF-XRFI) system for EDXRF imaging applications was developed. The proposed FF-XRFI system has an active area of 10 x 10 cm(2) and can be used to examine macroscopic samples with a moderately good energy resolution (< 1.6 keV FWHM at 8 keV) and a suitable spatial resolution (similar to 500 mu m FWHM). This combination of characteristics allows us to record elemental distribution maps from the surface of different sample types by combining image and energy information. Two different approaches were used for X-ray optics, one based on a single pinhole and another based on a parallel multiple-hole collimator. To illustrate the system capabilities, some sample examples were imaged and studied.

Abstract: Among all types of discovered crystals, those formed by organic molecules show the greatest diversity, which results from the intrinsic complexity of the organic molecules and the weak interactions between them. Even for a given compound, different crystal structures can exist. This feature is referred to as polymorphism in the modern crystallographic context and those different crystal forms are called polymorphs. In reality, the crystallization of organic molecules is often performed at the surface of a substrate, giving rise to heterogeneous crystallization. Except for the well-known catalyzing effects, the existence of substrates brings more possibilities to the polymorphic behaviors of organic molecules, promoting the formation of new polymorphs that are only stable in the vicinity of the substrates. For this reason, these new polymorphic forms are often described as substrate-induced polymorphs (SIPs). It is of great importance to understand the formation of SIPs for organic molecules as it has been reported that SIPs can show superior properties with respect to their bulk form counterparts. Up to now, most studies focus on the identifying and characterizing the presence of SIPs, which relies mainly on X-ray diffraction techniques. However, a detailed explanation about the origin of SIPs is still missing. In this work, we have combined several powerful experimental characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in order to reach an integrated view over the formation of SIPs. These experimental studies are strongly supported by computational chemistry simulations, such as density functional theory and molecular dynamics. A big advantage of using atomistic simulations is that it enables the possibility to predict a priori the crystal structures of SIPs and to establish a posteriori the general rules for the formation of SIPs. In practice, this thesis employs state-of-art atomistic simulation approaches in order to bridge substrate-induced polymorphism with a conceptually-connected research area: the self-assembly of molecular networks (SAMNs), also called 2D crystallization. Unlike SIPs, which extend at least several molecular layers, SAMNs are composed of a single layer of molecules with ordered packing. Our simulations have enabled a more comprehensive understanding about the role of substrate during the formation of SIPs and we elucidate how the positional and orientational order of molecules propagates from the substrate to the upper 2D and even 3D crystal layers. In this way, a fundamental understanding of the substrate-induced crystallization is gained by connecting 2D and 3D crystallization using substrate-induced approaches.

Abstract: Large river catchments with mixed land use capture pesticides from many sources, and degradable pesticides are converted during downstream transport. Unravelling the contribution of pesticide source and the effect of degradation processes is a challenge in such areas. However, insight and understanding of the sources is important for targeted managen-lent, especially when water is abstracted from the river for drinking water production. The river Meuse is such a case. A long-term monitoring data set was applied in a modelling approach for assessing the contribution of waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) and tributaries (sub-basins) to surface water contamination, and to evaluate the effect of decay on the downstream concentrations of glyphosate and AMPA at the point of drinking water abstraction. The results show that WWTPs are important contributors for glyphosate and AMPA in large river catchments with mixed land uses. In the studied area, the river Meuse in the Netherlands, the relative contribution of WWTP effluents is above 29% for glyphosate and around 12% for AMPA. Local industries are found to be potentially big contributors of AMPA. Glyphosate entering the river system is gradually converted to AMPA and other degradation-productions, which results in downstream loads that are considerably lower than the sum of all influxes. In summer when the travel time is longer due to lower discharge, the first order decay of glyphosate in the river Meuse is estimated to result in about 50% reduction of the downstream glyphosate concentrations over a river stretch of 250 km. The contribution of glyphosate decay to the observed AMPA concentrations ranges between 2% and 10%. Contributions are sensitive to seasonal variations in discharge that influence the concentrations through dilution and degradation. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: It has often been stated that a holographic biprism represents a near perfect energy filter and only elastically scattered electrons can participate in the interference fringes. This is based on the assumption that the reference wave does not contain inelastically scattered electrons. In this letter we show that this is not exactly true because of the delocalised inelastic interaction of the reference wave with the sample. We experimentally and theoretically show that inelastic scattering plays a role in the fringe formation, but it is shown that this contribution is small and can usually be neglected in practice. Abstract: High-entropy materials are an emerging pathway in the development of high-activity (electro)catalysts because of the inherent tunability and coexistence of multiple potential active sites, which may lead to earth-abundant catalyst materials for energy-efficient electrochemical energy storage. In this report, we identify how the multication composition in high-entropy perovskite oxides (HEO) contributes to high catalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), i.e., the key kinetically limiting half-reaction in several electrochemical energy conversion technologies, including green hydrogen generation. We compare the activity of the (001) facet of LaCr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2O3-delta with the parent compounds (single B-site in the ABO3 perovskite). While the single B-site perovskites roughly follow the expected volcano-type activity trends, the HEO clearly outperforms all of its parent compounds with 17 to 680 times higher currents at a fixed overpotential. As all samples were grown as an epitaxial layer, our results indicate an intrinsic composition-function relationship, avoiding the effects of complex geometries or unknown surface composition. In-depth X-ray photoemission studies reveal a synergistic effect of simultaneous oxidation and reduction of different transition metal cations during the adsorption of reaction intermediates. The surprisingly high OER activity demonstrates that HEOs are a highly attractive, earth-abundant material class for high-activity OER electrocatalysts, possibly allowing the activity to be fine-tuned beyond the scaling limits of mono-or bimetallic oxides.

Abstract: An oxide semiconductor (perovskite-type Mn2O3) is reported which has a narrow and direct bandgap of 0.45 eV and a high Vickers hardness of 15 GPa. All the known materials with similar electronic band structures (e.g., InSb, PbTe, PbSe, PbS, and InAs) play crucial roles in the semiconductor industry. The perovskite-type Mn2O3 described is much stronger than the above semiconductors and may find useful applications in different semiconductor devices, e.g., in IR detectors.

Abstract: Graphene oxide can act as an amplification platform for the immobilization of a hybrid structure composed of tyrosinase (Tyr) and zinc oxide quantum dots (ZnO QDs). This article describes how this platform increases the sensitivity for the detection of hydroxylated polychlorobiphenyls (OH-PCBs). The adsorption of Tyr (with low isoelectric point) on the positively charged surface of ZnO QDs is based on electrostatic interactions. The scanning electron microscopic images and UVvis spectroscopic analysis demonstrated the adsorption of Tyr on ZnO QDs. The stepwise assembly process of the fabricated biosensor was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The synthesized ZnO QDs and graphene oxide were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic techniques. The determination of OH-PCBs was carried out by using square wave voltammetry over the concentration range of 2.827.65 μM with a detection limit of 0.15 μM with good reproducibility, selectivity and acceptable stability. The high value of surface coverage of ZnO QDs and small value of MichaelisMenten constant (View the MathML source) confirmed an excellent loading of the Tyr and a high affinity of the biosensor toward the detection of OH-PCBs. This biosensor and the described sensing platform offer a great potential for rapid, cost-effective and on-field analysis of OH-PCBs.

Abstract: The size and shape of plant leaves change with growth, and an accurate description of leaf shape is crucial for describing plant morphogenesis and development. Bilateral symmetry, which has been widely observed but poorly examined, occurs in both dicot and monocot leaves, including all nominated bamboo species (approximately 1,300 species), of which at least 500 are found in China. Although there are apparent differences in leaf size among bamboo species due to genetic and environmental profiles, bamboo leaves have bilateral symmetry with parallel venation and appear similar across species. Here, we investigate whether the shape of bamboo leaves can be accurately described by a simplified Gielis equation, which consists of only two parameters (leaf length and shape) and produces a perfect bilateral shape. To test the applicability of this equation and the occurrence of bilateral symmetry, we first measured the leaf length of 42 bamboo species, examining >500 leaves per species. We then scanned 30 leaves per species that had approximately the same length as the median leaf length for that species. The leaf-shape data from scanned profiles were fitted to the simplified Gielis equation. Results confirmed that the equation fits the leaf-shape data extremely well, with the coefficients of determination being 0.995 on average. We further demonstrated the bilateral symmetry of bamboo leaves, with a clearly defined leaf-shape parameter of all 42 bamboo species investigated ranging from 0.02 to 0.1. This results in a simple and reliable tool for precise determination of bamboo species, with applications in forestry, ecology, and taxonomy.

Abstract: The early stages of nanocrystal nucleation and growth are still an active field of research and remain unrevealed. In this work, by the combination of aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical characterization of the electrodeposition of different metals, we provide a complete reformulation of the VolmerWeber 3D island growth mechanism, which has always been accepted to explain the early stages of metal electrodeposition and thin-film growth on low-energy substrates. We have developed a Generalized Electrochemical Aggregative Growth Mechanism which mimics the atomistic processes during the early stages of thin-film growth, by incorporating nanoclusters as building blocks. We discuss the influence of new processes such as nanocluster self-limiting growth, surface diffusion, aggregation, and coalescence on the growth mechanism and morphology of the resulting nanostructures. Self-limiting growth mechanisms hinder nanocluster growth and favor coalescence driven growth. The size of the primary nanoclusters is independent of the applied potential and deposition time. The balance between nucleation, nanocluster surface diffusion, and coalescence depends on the material and the overpotential, and influences strongly the morphology of the deposits. A small extent of coalescence leads to ultraporous dendritic structures, large surface coverage, and small particle size. Contrarily, full recrystallization leads to larger hemispherical monocrystalline islands and smaller particle density. The mechanism we propose represents a scientific breakthrough from the fundamental point of view and indicates that achieving the right balance between nucleation, self-limiting growth, cluster surface diffusion, and coalescence is essential and opens new, exciting possibilities to build up enhanced supported nanostructures using nanoclusters as building blocks.

Abstract: A general Monte Carlo program for the simulation of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers is presented. The global layout of the program is discussed and the way in which variance reduction techniques have been employed to improve the efficiency of the code is described. For the case of polychromatic excitation in a direct excitation energy-dispersive (ED) XRF instrument, experimentally collected ED-XRF spectra are compared with simulated spectral distributions. Applications of the software in the field of quantitative analysis and thickness estimation of samples of intermediate thickness illustrate the potential of the method.

Abstract: In vitro experiments provide a solid basis for understanding the interactions between particles and biological systems. An important confounding variable for these studies is the difference between the amount of particles administered and that which reaches the surface of cells. Here, we engineer a hydrogel-based nanoparticle system and combine in situ characterization techniques, 3D-printed cell cultures, and computational modeling to evaluate and study particle cell interactions of advanced particle systems. The framework presented demonstrates how sedimentation and diffusion can explain differences in particle cell association, and provides a means to account for these effects. Finally, using in silico modeling, we predict the proportion of particles that reaches the cell surface using common experimental conditions for a wide range of inorganic and organic micro- and nanoparticles. This work can assist in the understanding and control of sedimentation and diffusion when investigating cellular interactions of engineered particles.
