Title (up) Magnetic properties of La3Ni2Sb Ta Nb1––O9; from relaxor to spin glass Type A1 Journal article
Year 2019 Publication Journal of solid state chemistry (Print) Abbreviated Journal Journal of Solid State Chemistry
  Volume 273 Issue Pages 175-185
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Neutron diffraction experiments conducted at 5 K in a magnetic field 0 < H/kOe < 50 have shown that the monoclinic perovskite La3Ni2TaO9 behaves as a relaxor ferromagnet. Compositions in the series La3Ni2SbxTayNb1–x–yO9 have been synthesized in polycrystalline form. Electron microscopy, X–ray diffraction and neutron diffraction have shown that the solid solutions are largely homogeneous and monophasic. Magnetometry and neutron diffraction have shown that the relaxor magnetisation persists in low fields when x + y = 1 but is rapidly diminished by the introduction of niobium. This change in magnetic behaviour is ascribed to the differences in the d–orbital energies of Sb5+, Nb5+ and Ta5+.

Title (up) Magnetic properties of the 6H perovskite Ba3Fe2TeO9 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2017 Publication Journal of solid state chemistry Abbreviated Journal J Solid State Chem
  Volume 253 Issue Pages 347-354
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract A polycrystalline sample of Ba3Fe2TeO9 having the 6H perovskite structure has been prepared in a solid-state reaction and studied by a combination of electron microscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction. Partial ordering of Fe3+ and Te6+ cations occurs over the six-coordinate sites; the corner-sharing octahedra are predominantly occupied by the former and the face-sharing octahedra by a 1:1 mixture of the two. On cooling through the temperature range 18 < T/K < 295 an increasing number of spins join an antiferromagnetic backbone running through the structure while the remainder show complex relaxation effects. At 3 K an antiferromagnetic phase and a spin glass coexist.

Abstract We study the electron wave packet moving through a bent channel. We demonstrate that the packet transmission probability becomes an asymmetric function of the magnetic field when the electron packet is capacitively coupled to a metal plate. The coupling occurs through a nonlinear potential which translates a different kinetics of the transport for opposite magnetic-field orientations into a different potential felt by the scattered electron.

Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of the most promising nanomaterials to be used in biomedicine for drug/gene delivery as well as biomedical imaging. This study develops radio-labeled, iron oxide-decorated multiwalled CNTs (MWNTs) as dual magnetic resonance (MR) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) contrast agents. Hybrids containing different amounts of iron oxide are synthesized by in situ generation. Physicochemical characterisations reveal the presence of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) granted the magnetic properties of the hybrids. Further comprehensive examinations including high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), fast Fourier transform simulations, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy assure the conformation of prepared SPION as γ-Fe2O3. High r2 relaxivities are obtained in both phantom and in vivo MRI compared to the clinically approved SPION Endorem. The hybrids are successfully radio labeled with technetium-99m through a functionalized bisphosphonate and enable SPECT/CT imaging and γ-scintigraphy to quantitatively analyze the biodistribution in mice. No abnormality is found by histological examination and the presence of SPION and MWNT are identified by Perls stain and Neutral Red stain, respectively. TEM images of liver and spleen tissues show the co-localization of SPION and MWNTs within the same intracellular vesicles, indicating the in vivo stability of the hybrids after intravenous injection. The results demonstrate the capability of the present SPIONMWNT hybrids as dual MRI and SPECT contrast agents for in vivo use.

Title (up) Magnetization measurements and Ginzburg-Landau simulations of micron-size \beta-tin samples : evidence for an unusual critical behavior of mesoscopic type-I superconductors Type A1 Journal article
Year 2012 Publication Physical review letters Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev Lett
  Volume 109 Issue 19 Pages 197003
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We describe investigations of the largely unexplored field of mesoscopic type-I superconductors. Micromagnetometry and 3D Ginzburg-Landau simulations of our single crystal β-tin samples in this regime reveal size- and temperature-dependent supercritical fields whose behavior is radically different from the bulk critical field HcB. We find that complete suppression of the intermediate state in medium-size samples can result in a surprising reduction of the critical field significantly below HcB. We also reveal an evolution of the superconducting-to-normal phase transition from the expected irreversible first order at low temperatures through the previously unobserved reversible first-order to a second-order transition close to Tc, where the critical field can be many times larger than HcB. Finally, we have identified striking correlations between the mesoscopic Hc3 for nucleation of surface superconductivity and the thermodynamic Hc near Tc. All these observations are entirely unexpected in the conventional type-I picture.

Abstract With large thin superconducting films in a perpendicular magnetic field, the usual definition and calculation of the magnetization M via currents or as the difference of two fields fail, since the spatially averaged magnetic field in the film coincides with the uniform applied field and the demagnetization factor is unity. The definition of M as field-derivative of the free energy, however, still works in this limit. We generalize the virial theorem, previously derived for infinite bulk superconductors, to infinitely extended films of arbitrary thickness. An expression for M is obtained that indeed reproduces the M computed from the field derivative of the free energy.

Abstract The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is known to play a central role in stabilizing chiral spin textures such as skyrmions and domain walls (DWs). Electrical manipulation of DW and skyrmion motion offers possibilities for next-generation, scalable and energy-efficient spintronic devices. However, achieving the full potential of these nanoscale devices requires overcoming several challenges, including reliable electrical write and read techniques for these magnetic objects, and addressing pinning and Joule-heating concerns. Here, through micromagnetic simulations and analytical modeling, we show that DMI can directly induce magnetization switching of a nanomagnet with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). We find that the switching is driven by the interplay between the DMI-induced magnetic frustration and the PMA. By introducing magnetic tunnel junctions to electrically access and control the magnetization direction of the PMA nanomagnet, we first show the potential of this concept to enable high-density fieldfree spin-orbit torque magnetic random-access memory. Ultimately, we demonstrate that it offers a way of transferring and processing spin information for logic operation without relying on current-driven DW or skyrmion motion.

Abstract The temperature-dependent magnetoresistance effect is investigated in a magnetically modulated two-dimensional (21)) electron gas (2DEG) which can be realized by depositing two parallel ferromagnets on top of a 2DEG electron gas. In the resonant tunnelling regime the transmission for the parallel and antiparallel magnetization configurations shows a quite distinct dependence on the longitudinal wave vector of the incident electrons. This leads to a very large magneto resistance ratio with a strong temperature dependence. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract Transport properties of the 2DEG are studied in the presence of a normal magnetic field B and of a weak, two-dimensional periodic potential modulation. A tight-binding treatment has shown that each Landau level splits into several subbands with exponentially small gaps between them. Assuming the latter are closed due to disorder gives analytical wave functions and simplifies the evaluation of the magnetoresistance tensor p(muv) The relative phase of the oscillations in p(xx) and p(yy) depends on the modulation strengths and periods. For short periods less than or equal to 100 nm, in addition to the Weiss oscillations, the collisional contribution to the conductivity and the corresponding resistivity contribution show prominent peaks when one flux quantum h/e passes through an integral number of unit cells in good agreement with experiments. For periods 300-400 nm long used in early experiments, these peaks occur at fields 10-25 times smaller than those of the Weiss oscillations and are not resolved. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.   Abstract We investigate theoretically the ballistic transport in a two-dimensional electron gas, which is rolled up as a tube and is micro-structured into a Hall bar. A uniform magnetic field applied to such a curved surface results in a non-uniform perpendicular magnetic field. The bend resistances become asymmetric with respect to the orientation of the magnetic field due to the varying magnetic field along the junction. The resistance asymmetry is strongly affected by corrugation due to the varying mobility along different crystallographic directions. We compare our results with a recent transport measurement.

Title (up) Magneto-excitons in planar type II quantum dots Type A1 Journal article
Year 2001 Publication Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics Abbreviated Journal Phys Rev B

Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We study an exciton in a type-II quantum dot, where the electron is confined in the dot, but the hole is located in the barrier material. The exciton properties are studied as a function of a perpendicular magnetic field using a Hartree-Fock mesh calculation. Our model system consists of a planar quantum disk. Angular momentum (l) transitions are predicted with increasing magnetic field. We, also study the transition from a type-I to a type-H quantum dot which is induced by changing the confinement potential of the hole. For sufficiently large magnetic fields a reentrant behavior is found from l(h) = 0 to l(h) not equal 0 and back to l(h) = 0, which results in a transition from type II to type I.

Title (up) Magneto-optical imaging of flux penetration into arrays of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 microdisks Type A1 Journal article

Abstract We have used differential magneto-optical (MO) imaging to investigate the mixed state of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+ (BSCCO) microdisks fabricated on a single-crystal sample. MO difference images of the stray field distribution over a range of out-of-plane fields allow us to distinguish between flux that is penetrating the disks and that entering the underlying BSCCO platelet. We find that flux preferentially flows along linear defects into the interstitial platelet regions up to a characteristic field Hp, above which flux enters the disks. We identify this as the field of first penetration of pancake vortices over the Bean-Livingston barrier around the disks, where Hp(T) at intermediate temperatures is well described by an exponentially decaying function with a characteristic temperature T0=19 K. At a given temperature, a minority of the disks exhibit a lower penetration field and we correlate the location of these disks with the linear defects in the BSCCO crystal.

Abstract The electronic properties of monolayer phosphorene are exotic due to its puckered structure and large intrinsic direct band gap. We derive and discuss its band structure in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. Further, we evaluate the magneto-optical Hall and longitudinal optical conductivities as functions of temperature, magnetic field, and Fermi energy, and show that they are strongly influenced by the magnetic field. The imaginary part of the former and the real part of the latter exhibit regular interband oscillations as functions of the frequency omega in the range (h) over bar omega similar to 1.5-2 eV. Strong intraband responses in the latter and weak ones in the former occur at much lower frequencies. The magneto-optical response can be tuned in the microwave-to-terahertz and visible frequency ranges in contrast with a conventional two-dimensional electron gas or graphene in which the response is limited to the terahertz regime. This ability to isolate carriers in an anisotropic structure may make phosphorene a promising candidate for new optical devices.
