“Wave fronts and packets in 1D models of different meta-materials : graphene, left-handed media and transmission line”. Matulis A, Zarenia M, Peeters FM, Physica status solidi: B: basic research 252, 2330 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1002/pssb.201552023
Abstract: A comparative study is made of the propagation of wave packets and fronts in three different meta-media, i.e. graphene, left-handed media (LHM) and transmission lines, using one-dimensional models. It is shown that a potential step in graphene influences only the frequency of the electronic wave, i.e., the particular spectrum branch (electron or hole) to which the wave belongs to, while the envelop function (the wave front or packet form) remains unchanged. Although the model for a vacuum and LHM interface is similar to that of the potential step in graphene, the solutions are quite different due to differences in the chirality of the waves. Comparing the propagation of wave fronts and packets in a standard transmission line and its meta-analog we demonstrate that the propagating packets in the meta-line are much more deformed as compared to the standard one, including broadening, asymmetry and even the appearance of fast moving precursors. This influence is seen not only in the case of packets with steep fronts but in soft Gaussian packets as well.

“Innovative market-based policy instruments for waste management : a case study on shredder residues in Belgium”. Dubois M, Hoogmartens R, Van Passel S, Van Acker K, Vanderreydt I, Waste Management &, Research 33, 886 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1177/0734242X15600053
Abstract: In an increasingly complex waste market, market-based policy instruments, such as disposal taxes, can give incentives for sustainable progress while leaving flexibility for innovation. However, implementation of disposal taxes is often criticised by domestic waste handlers that fear to be outcompeted by competitors in other countries. The article discusses three innovative market-based instruments that limit the impact on international competitiveness: Tradable recycling credits, refunded disposal taxes and differentiated disposal taxes. All three instruments have already been implemented for distinct environmental policies in Europe. In order to illustrate how these instruments can be used for waste policy, the literature review is complemented with a case study on shredder residues from metal-containing waste streams in Belgium. The analysis shows that a conventional disposal tax remains the most efficient, simple and transparent instrument. However, if international competition is a significant issue or if political support is weak, refunded and differentiated disposal taxes can have an added value as second-best instruments. Tradable recycling credits are not an appropriate instrument for use in small waste markets with market power. In addition, refunded taxes create similar incentives, but induce lower transactions costs.

“Advanced electron microscopy characterisation of important precipitation and ordering phenomena in shape memory systems”. Schryvers D, Shape memory and superelasticity 1, 78 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1007/s40830-015-0006-3
Abstract: The present paper discusses some important aspects of precipitation and ordering in alloy systems that show a martensitic transformation and can or are used as shape memory or superelastic metallic systems. The precipitates are investigated by a variety of conventional and advanced electron microscopy techniques, including atomic resolution, 3D slice-and-view, energy loss spectroscopy etc. Depending on the system, such secondary phases can decrease the probability of a displacive transformation by changing the phase stability in the system, such as in the case of NiAl or NiTiPd, or can mechanically hinder the passage of the transformation interface, as in NiTiNb. On the other hand, properly controlling the nucleation and growth of some precipitates can strongly improve the properties of some types of materials, as is the case for the well-known Ni4Ti3 precipitates.

“Morphological TEM studies and magnetoresistance analysis of sputtered Al-substituted ZnO films : the role of oxygen”. Van Gompel M, Atalay AY, Gaulke A, Van Bael MK, D'Haen J, Turner S, Van Tendeloo G, Vanacken J, Moshchalkov VV, Wagner P, Physica status solidi : A : applications and materials science 212, 1191 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1002/pssa.201431888
Abstract: In this article, we report on the synthesis of thin, epitaxial films of the transparent conductive oxide Al:ZnO on (0001)-oriented synthetic sapphire substrates by DC sputtering from targets with a nominal 1 at.% Al substitution. The deposition was carried out at an unusually low substrate temperature of only 250 °C in argonoxygen mixtures as well as in pure argon. The impact of the processgas composition on the morphology was analysed by transmission electron microscopy, revealing epitaxial growth in all the cases with a minor impact of the process parameters on the resulting grain sizes. The transport properties resistivity, Hall effect and magnetoresistance were studied in the range from 10 to 300 K in DC and pulsed magnetic fields up to 45 T. While the carrier density and mobility are widely temperature independent, we identified a low fieldlow temperature regime in which the magnetoresistance shows an anomalous, negative behaviour. At higher fields and temperatures, the magnetoresistance exhibits a more conventional, positive curvature with increasing field strength. As a possible explanation, we propose carrier scattering at localised magnetic trace impurities and magnetic correlations.

“Nonlinear transport of the Wigner crystal in symmetric and asymmetric FET-like structures : nonlinear transport of the Wigner crystal on superfluid He-4 in quasi-one-dimensional channels with symmetric and asymmetric constrictions”. Vasylenko AA, Misko VR, European physical journal : B : condensed matter and complex systems 88, 105 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1140/epjb/e2015-60217-0
Abstract: When floating on a two-dimensional surface of superfluid He-4, electrons arrange themselves in two-dimensional crystalline structure known as Wigner crystal. In channels, the boundaries interfere the crystalline order and in case of very narrow channels one observes a quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) Wigner crystal formed by just a few rows of electrons and, ultimately, one row in the “quantum wire” regime. Recently, the “quantum wire” regime was accessed experimentally [D.G. Rees, H. Totsuji, K. Kono, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 176801 (2012)] resulting in unusual transport phenomena such as, e.g., oscillations in the electron conductance. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the nonlinear transport of electrons in channels with various types of constrictions: single and multiple symmetric and asymmetric geometrical constrictions with varying width and length, and saddle-point-type potentials with varying gate voltage. In particular, we analyze the average particle velocity of the particles and the corresponding electron current versus the driving force or the gate voltage. We have revealed a significant difference in the dynamics for long and short constrictions: The oscillations of the average velocity of the particles for the systems with short constrictions exhibit a clear correlation with the transitions between the states with different numbers of rows of particles; on the other hand, for the systems with longer constrictions these oscillations are suppressed. The obtained results qualitatively agree with the experimental observations. Next, we propose a FET-like structure that consists of a channel with asymmetric constrictions. We show that applying a transverse bias results either in increase of the average particle velocity or in its suppression thus allowing a flexible control tool over the electron transport. The advantage of the asymmetric FET is that it does not have a gate and it allows an easy control of relatively large electron flow. Furthermore, the asymmetric device can be used for rectification of an ac-driven electron flow. Our results bring important insights into the dynamics of electrons floating on the surface of superfluid He-4 in channels with constrictions and allow the effective control over the electron transport.

Abstract: We propose a simple quantum mechanical model describing the time dependent diffusion current between two fermion reservoirs that were initially disconnected and characterized by different densities or chemical potentials. The exact, analytical solution of the model yields the transient behavior of the coupled fermion systems evolving to a final steady state, whereas the long-time behavior is determined by a power law rather than by exponential decay. Similar results are obtained for the entropy production which is proportional to the diffusion current. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“Solidelectrolyte interphase evolution of carbon-coated silicon nanoparticles for lithium-ion batteries monitored by transmission electron microscopy and impedance spectroscopy”. Van Havenbergh K, Turner S, Driesen K, Bridel J-S, Van Tendeloo G, Energy technology 3, 699 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1002/ente.201500034
Abstract: The main drawbacks of silicon as the most promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (theoretical capacity=3572 mAh g−1) are lithiation-induced volume changes and the continuous formation of a solidelectrolyte interphase (SEI) upon cycling. A recent strategy is to focus on the influence of coatings and composite materials. To this end, the evolution of the SEI, as well as an applied carbon coating, on nanosilicon electrodes during the first electrochemical cycles is monitored. Two specific techniques are combined: Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is used to study the surface evolution of the nanoparticles on a very local scale, whereas electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) provides information on the electrode level. A TEMEELS fingerprint signal of carbonate structures from the SEI is discovered, which can be used to differentiate between the SEI and a graphitic carbon matrix. Furthermore, the shielding effect of the carbon coating and the thickness evolution of the SEI are described.

“Chemical stability of YBiO3 buffer layers for implementation in YBa2Cu3O7-&delta, coated conductors”. Pollefeyt G, Meledin A, Pop C, Ricart S, Hühne R, Van Tendeloo G, Van Driessche I, Acta materialia 100, 224 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.actamat.2015.08.023
Abstract: In this work, the chemical and microstructural stability of YBiO3 buffer layers during the growth of YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) was studied. The superconducting YBCO films were deposited via both Pulsed Laser Deposition as well as Chemical Solution Deposition. Although excellent superconducting properties are obtained in both cases, self-field critical current densities of 3.6 and 1.2 MA/cm2 respectively, chemical instability of the YBiO3 buffer layer is observed. An elaborate transmission electron microscopy study showed that in the case of vacuum deposited YBCO, the YBiO3 becomes unstable and Bi2O3 sublimates out of the architecture. Due to this structural instability, an intermediate Y2O3 layer is obtained which maintains it microstructural orientation relation with the substrate and acts as growth template for YBCO. For chemical solution deposited YBCO, reaction of YBCO with the YBiO3 buffer layer is observed, leading to large grains of YBa2BiO6 which are pushed towards the surface of the films and strongly reduce the superconducting properties. Upon using high growth temperatures for the superconducting layer, these secondary phases decompose, which subsequently leads to Bi2O3 sublimation and a textured YBCO film which directly nucleated onto the LaAlO3 single crystal substrate. Hence, this electron microscopy study indicates that bismuth-based buffer layers systems are not suitable for implementation in coated conductors.

“Structure and function of p53-DNA complexes with inactivation and rescue mutations : a molecular dynamics simulation study”. Kamaraj B, Bogaerts A, PLoS ONE 10, e0134638 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0134638
Abstract: The tumor suppressor protein p53 can lose its function upon DNA-contact mutations (R273C and R273H) in the core DNA-binding domain. The activity can be restored by second-site suppressor or rescue mutations (R273CT284R, R273HT284R, and R273HS240R). In this paper, we elucidate the structural and functional consequence of p53 proteins upon DNA-contact mutations and rescue mutations and the underlying mechanisms at the atomic level by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Furthermore, we also apply the docking approach to investigate the binding phenomena between the p53 protein and DNA upon DNA-contact mutations and rescue mutations. This study clearly illustrates that, due to DNA-contact mutants, the p53 structure loses its stability and becomes more rigid than the native protein. This structural loss might affect the p53-DNA interaction and leads to inhibition of the cancer suppression. Rescue mutants (R273CT284R, R273HT284R and R273HS240R) can restore the functional activity of the p53 protein upon DNA-contact mutations and show a good interaction between the p53 protein and a DNA molecule, which may lead to reactivate the cancer suppression function. Understanding the effects of p53 cancer and rescue mutations at the molecular level will be helpful for designing drugs for p53 associated cancer diseases. These drugs should be designed so that they can help to inhibit the abnormal function of the p53 protein and to reactivate the p53 function (cell apoptosis) to treat human cancer.

“Microstructural Characterization and Transformation Behavior of Porous Ni50.8Ti49.2”. Yao X, Cao S, Zhang XP, Schryvers D, Materials Today: Proceedings 2, S833 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.matpr.2015.07.411
Abstract: Porous Ni50.8Ti49.2 bulk material was prepared by powder metallurgy sintering. Solid solution and aging treatments were applied to improve the phase homogeneity and phase transformation behavior. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy, aided by energy dispersive X-ray analysis, were used to study the microstructure and chemical phase content of the alloys. In-situ cooling was carried out to observe the phase transformation behavior. As-received material contains dispersed Ni2Ti4O particles while Ni4Ti3 precipitates appear after aging. Close to pore edges, the latter have a preferential orientation due to the induced stress fields in the matrix.

“Quantitative annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy for nanoparticle atom-counting: What are the limits?”.De Backer A, De Wael A, Gonnissen J, Martinez GT, Béché, A, MacArthur KE, Jones L, Nellist PD, Van Aert S, Journal of physics : conference series 644Electron Microscopy and Analysis Group Conference (EMAG), JUN 02-JUL 02, 2015, Manchester, ENGLAND, 012034 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1088/1742-6596/644/1/012034
Abstract: Quantitative atomic resolution annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF STEM) has become a powerful technique for nanoparticle atom-counting. However, a lot of nanoparticles provide a severe characterisation challenge because of their limited size and beam sensitivity. Therefore, quantitative ADF STEM may greatly benefit from statistical detection theory in order to optimise the instrumental microscope settings such that the incoming electron dose can be kept as low as possible whilst still retaining single-atom precision. The principles of detection theory are used to quantify the probability of error for atom-counting. This enables us to decide between different image performance measures and to optimise the experimental detector settings for atom-counting in ADF STEM in an objective manner. To demonstrate this, ADF STEM imaging of an industrial catalyst has been conducted using the near-optimal detector settings. For this experiment, we discussed the limits for atom-counting diagnosed by combining a thorough statistical method and detailed image simulations.

“Fabrication and Characterization of Fe2O3-Based Nanostructures Functionalized with Metal Particles and Oxide Overlayers”. Abstract: We report on the design of nanosystems based on functionalized -Fe 2 O 3 nanostructures supported on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates. The target materials were developed by means of hybrid vapor phase approaches, combining plasma assisted-chemical vapor deposition (PA-CVD) for the production of iron(III) oxide systems and the subsequent radio frequency (RF)-sputtering or atomic layer deposition (ALD) for the functionalization with Au nanoparticles or TiO 2 overlayers, respectively. The interplay between material characteristics and the adopted processing parameters was investigated by complementary analytical techniques, encompassing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS). The obtained results highlight the possibility of fabricating Au/ -Fe 2 O 3 nanocomposites, with a controlled dispersion and distribution of metal particles, and TiO 2 / -Fe 2 O 3 heterostructures, characterized by an intimate coupling between the constituent oxides.

“15-band spectral envelope function formalism applied to broken gap tunnel field-effect transistors”. Abstract: A carefully chosen heterostructure can significantly boost the performance of tunnel field-effect transistors (TFET). Modelling of these hetero-TFETs requires a quantum mechanical (QM) approach with an accurate band structure to allow for a correct description of band-to-band-tunneling. We have therefore developed a fully QM 2D solver, combining for the first time a full zone 15-band envelope function formalism with a spectral approach, including a heterostructure basis set transformation. Simulations of GaSb/InAs broken gap TFETs illustrate the wide body capabilities and transparant transmission analysis of the formalism.

“Analytic solution of Ando's surface roughness model with finite domain distribution functions”. Moors K, Sorée B, Magnus W, 18th International Workshop On Computational Electronics (iwce 2015) (2015)
Abstract: Ando's surface roughness model is applied to metallic nanowires and extended beyond small roughness size and infinite barrier limit approximations for the wavefunction overlaps, such as the Prange-Nee approximation. Accurate and fast simulations can still be performed without invoking these overlap approximations by averaging over roughness profiles using finite domain distribution functions to obtain an analytic solution for the scattering rates. The simulations indicate that overlap approximations, while predicting a resistivity that agrees more or less with our novel approach, poorly estimate the underlying scattering rates. All methods show that a momentum gap between left- and right-moving electrons at the Fermi level, surpassing a critical momentum gap, gives rise to a substantial decrease in resistivity.

“Giant magnetoresistance in the half-metallic double-perovskite ferrimagnet Mn2FeReO6”. Abstract: The first transition-metal-only double perovskite compound, Mn2+ Fe-2(3+) Re5+ O-6, with 17 unpaired d electrons displays ferrimagnetic ordering up to 520K and a giant positive magnetoresistance of up to 220% at 5K and 8 T. These properties result from the ferrimagnetically coupled Fe and Re sublattice and are affected by a two-to-one magnetic-structure transition of the Mn sublattice when a magnetic field is applied. Theoretical calculations indicate that the half-metallic state can be mainly attributed to the spin polarization of the Fe and Re sites.

Abstract: A self-consistent analytical solution of the multi-subband Boltzmann transport equation with collision term describing grain boundary and surface roughness scattering is presented to study the resistivity scaling in metal nanowires. The different scattering mechanisms and the influence of their statistical parameters are analyzed. Instead of a simple power law relating the height or width of a nanowire to its resistivity, the picture appears to be more complicated due to quantum-mechanical scattering and quantization effects, especially for surface roughness scattering.

T2 –, IEEE 42nd Photovoltaic Specialist Conference (PVSC), JUN 14-19, 2015, New Orleans, LA (2015)
Abstract: We have fabricated 9.7% efficient Cu2ZnSnSe4/CdS/ZnO solar cells by H2Se selenization of sequentially sputtered metal layers. Despite the good efficiency obtained, process control appears to be difficult. In the present contribution we compare the electrical and physical properties of two devices with nominal same fabrication procedure, but 1% and 9.7% power conversion efficiency respectively. We identify the problem of the lower performing device to be the segregation of ZnSe phases at the backside of the sample. This ZnSe seems to be the reason for the strong bias dependent photocurrent observed in the lower performing devices, as it adds a potential barrier for carrier collection. The reason for the different behavior of the two nominally same devices is not fully understood, but speculated to be related to sputtering variability.

Abstract: We calculate the resistivity contribution of tilted grain boundaries with varying parameters in sub-10nm diameter metallic nanowires. The results have been obtained with the Boltzmann transport equation and Fermi's golden rule, retrieving correct state-dependent relaxation times. The standard approximation schemes for the relaxation times are shown to fail when grain boundary tilt is considered. Grain boundaries tilted under the same angle or randomly tilted induce a resistivity decrease.

Abstract: Ag nanocluster-doped glasses have been prepared by a conventional melt-quenching method. The effect of melt temperature and dwell time on the formation of Ag nanoclusters and Ag nanoparticles in simple host oxyfluoride glasses has been studied. The increase of melt temperature and dwell time results in the dissolution of Ag nanoparticles and substantial red-shift of absorption and photoluminescence spectra of the prepared glasses. The quantum yield of the glasses is similar to 5% and does not depend on melt temperature and dwell time. The prepared glasses may be used as red phosphors or down-conversion layers for solar-cells.

“Kinetic properties and heme pocket structure of two domains of the polymeric hemoglobin of Artemia in comparison with the native molecule”. Abstract: In this project, we studied some physicochemical properties of two different globin domains of the polymeric hemoglobin of the brine shrimp Artemia salina and compared them with those of the native molecule. Two domains (AsHbC1D1 and AsHbC1D5) were cloned and expressed in BL21(DE3)pLysS strain of Escherichiacoli. The recombinant proteins as well as the native hemoglobin (AfHb) were purified from bacteria and frozen Artemia, respectively by standard chromatographic methods and assessed by SDS-PAGE. The heme environment of these proteins was studied by optical spectroscopy and ligand-binding kinetics (e.g. CO association and O2 binding affinity) were measured for the two recombinant proteins and the native hemoglobin. This indicates that the CO association rate for AsHbC1D1 is higher than that of AsHbC1D5 and AfHb, while the calculated P50 value for AsHbC1D1 is lower than that of AsHbC1D5 and AfHb. The geminate and bimolecular rebinding parameters indicate a significant difference between both domains. Moreover, EPR results showed that the heme pocket in AfHb is in a more closed conformation than the heme pocket in myoglobin. Finally, the reduction potential of − 0.13 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode was determined for AfHb by direct electrochemical measurements. It is about 0.06 V higher than the potential of the single domain AsHbC1D5. This work shows that each domain in the hemoglobin of Artemia has different characteristics of ligand binding.

Abstract: The distribution of livestock grazing is a key principle of range management. This study examines pastoralists perceptions of the factors that affect the distribution of livestock in the rangelands of the Neqab region of the Kashmar County in north-east Iran. Data were collected from the pastoralists on their perceptions of the managerial, biological and physical factors that influences the distribution of livestock, using both qualitative and quantitative assessments. Results showed that, the perception of the majority of pastoralists was that the distribution of livestock was average or good in the study area. It was perceived that the experience of herders and the size of the rangeland were the main factors influencing the distribution of livestock. Regression analyses showed that it was perceived that managerial factors had a more important role than biological and physical factors in the distribution of livestock and the proper use of the rangelands in north-east Iran.
