Abstract |
Topotactic reduction of La1-xSrxMnO3 (0.67 <= x <= 1) phases with sodium hydride yields a series of isoelectronic materials of composition La1-xSrxMnO3-(0.5+x)/2. Lanthanum rich members of the series (0.67 <= x <= 0.83) adopt anion deficient perovskite structures with a 6-layer -OTOOT'O- stacking sequence of sheets of octahedra/square-based pyramids (O) and sheets of tetrahedra (T). The strontium rich members of the series (0.83 <= x <= 1) incorporate “step defects” into this 6-layer structure in which the OTOOT'O stacking sequence is converted into either OOTOOT' or TOOT'OO at a defect plane which runs perpendicular to the [201] lattice plane. The step defects appear to provide a mechanism to relieve lattice strain and accommodate additional anion deficiency in phases with x > 0.83. Magnetization and neutron diffraction data indicate La1-xSrxMnO3-(0.5+x)/2 phases adopt antiferromagnetically ordered states at low-temperature in which the ordered arrangement of magnetic spins is incommensurate with the crystallographic lattice. |

Abstract |
The superconducting state of an infinitely long superconducting cylinder surrounded by a medium which enhances its superconductivity near the boundary is studied within the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. This enhancement can be due to the proximity of another superconductor or due to surface treatment. Quantities such as the free energy, the magnetization and the Cooper-pair density are calculated. Phase diagrams are obtained to investigate how the critical field and the critical temperature depend on this surface enhancement for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa. Increasing the superconductivity near the surface leads to higher critical fields and critical temperatures. For small cylinder diameters only giant vortex states nucleate, while for larger cylinders multivortices can nucleate. The stability of these multivortex states also depends on the surface enhancement. For type-I superconductors we found the remarkable result that for a range of values of the surface extrapolation length the superconductor can transit from the Meissner state into superconducting states with vorticity L > 1. Such a behavior is not found for the case of large kappa, i.e., type-II superconductivity, |

Abstract |
Co-rich ZnCoO nanoparticles embedded in wurtzite Zn0.7Co0.3O thin films are grown by pulsed laser deposition on a Si substrate. Local superconductivity with an onset Tc at 5.9 K is demonstrated in the hybrid system. The unexpected superconductivity probably results from Co(3+) in the Co-rich ZnCoO nanoparticles or from the interface between the Co-rich nanoparticles and the Zn0.7Co0.3O matrix. |

Abstract |
Using highly efficient simulations of the tight-binding Bogoliubov-de-Gennes model, we solved self-consistently for the pair correlation and the Josephson current in a superconducting-bilayer graphene-superconducting Josephson junction. Different doping levels for the non-superconducting link are considered in the short- and long-junction regimes. Self-consistent results for the pair correlation and superconducting current resemble those reported previously for single-layer graphene except at the Dirac point, where remarkable differences in the proximity effect are found, as well as a suppression of the superconducting current in the long-junction regime. Inversion symmetry is broken by considering a potential difference between the layers and we found that the supercurrent can be switched if the junction length is larger than the Fermi length. |

Abstract |
Clay minerals are abundant natural materials arising in the presence of water and are composed of small particles of different sizes and shapes. The interlamellar space between layered silicate clays can also be used to host a variety of different organic and inorganic guest molecules or particles. Recent studies of clay−metal hybrids formed by impregnation of nanoparticles into the interlayer spaces of the clays have not demonstrated the ability for templated growth following the shape of the particles. Following this line of interest, a method for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles on the synthetic layered silicate clay laponite was developed. This approach can be used to make metal−clay nanoparticles with a variety of morphologies while retaining the molecular adsorption properties of the clay. The surface enhanced Raman scattering enhancement of these particles was also found to be greater than that obtained from other metal nanoparticles of a similar morphology, likely due to increased dye adsorption by the presence of the clay. The hybrid particles presented herein will contribute to further study of plasmonic
sensing, catalysis, dye aggregation, and novel composite materials. |

Abstract |
A spin wave majority fork-like structure with feature size of 40 nm, is presented and investigated, through micromagnetic simulations. The structure consists of three merging out-of-plane magnetization spin wave buses and four magneto-electric cells serving as three inputs and an output. The information of the logic signals is encoded in the phase of the transmitted spin waves and subsequently stored as direction of magnetization of the magneto-electric cells upon detection. The minimum dimensions of the structure that produce an operational majority gate are identified. For all input combinations, the detection scheme employed manages to capture the majority phase result of the spin wave interference and ignore all reflection effects induced by the geometry of the structure. Abstract |
Optical and electronic properties of black phosphorus strongly depend on the number of layers and type of stacking. Using first-principles calculations within the framework of density functional theory, we investigate the electronic properties of bilayer black phosphorus with an interlayer twist angle of 90 degrees. These calculations are complemented with a simple (k) over right arrow . (p) over right arrow model which is able to capture most of the low energy features and is valid for arbitrary twist angles. The electronic spectrum of 90 degrees twisted bilayer black phosphorus is found to be x-y isotropic in contrast to the monolayer. However x-y anisotropy, and a partial return to monolayer-like behavior, particularly in the valence band, can be induced by an external out-of-plane electric field. Moreover, the preferred hole effective mass can be rotated by 90 degrees simply by changing the direction of the applied electric field. In particular, a +0.4 (-0.4) V angstrom(1) out-of-plane electric field results in a similar to 60% increase in the hole effective mass along the y (x) axis and enhances the m(y)*/m(x)* (m(x)*/m(y)*) ratio as much as by a factor of 40. Our DFT and (k) over right arrow . (p) over right arrow simulations clearly indicate that the twist angle in combination with an appropriate gate voltage is a novel way to tune the electronic and optical properties of bilayer phosphorus and it gives us a new degree of freedom to engineer the properties of black phosphorus based devices. |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('Quantum electrodynamics predicts that heavy atoms (Z \u003E Z(c) approximate to 170) will undergo the process of atomic collapse where electrons sink into the positron continuum and a new family of so-called collapsing states emerges. The relativistic electrons in graphene exhibit the same physics but at a much lower critical charge (Z(c) approximate to 1) which has made it possible to confirm this phenomenon experimentally. However, there exist conflicting predictions on the effect of a magnetic field on atomic collapse. These theoretical predictions are based on the continuum Dirac-Weyl equation, which does not have an exact analytical solution for the interplay of a supercritical Coulomb potential and the magnetic field. Approximative solutions have been proposed, but because the two effects compete on similar energy scales, the theoretical treatment varies depending on the regime which is being considered. These limitations are overcome here by starting from a tight-binding approach and computing exact numerical results. By avoiding special limit cases, we found a smooth evolution between the different regimes. We predict that the atomic collapse effect persists even after the magnetic field is activated and that the critical charge remains unchanged. We show that the atomic collapse regime is characterized: (1) by a series of Landau level anticrossings and (2) by the absence of root B scaling of the Landau levels with regard to magnetic field strength.')); |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('Solid electrolytes are important materials with a wide range of technological applications. This work reports the crystal structure and electrical properties of a new solid electrolyte Na9Al(MoO4)(6). The monoclinic Na9Al(MoO4)(6) consists of isolated polyhedral, [Al(MoO4)(6)](9-) clusters composed of a central AlO6 octahedron sharing vertices with six MoO4 tetrahedra to form a three-dimensional framework. The AlO6 octahedron also shares edges with one NalO(6) octahedron and two Na2O(6) octahedra. Na3-Na5 atoms are located in the framework cavities. The structure is related to that of sodium ion conductor II-Na3Fe2(AsO4)(3). High-temperature conductivity measurements revealed that the conductivity (sigma) of Na9Al(MoO4)(6) at 803 K equals 1.63 X 10(-2) S cm(-1). The temperature behavior of the Na-23 and Al-27 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and the spin-lattice relaxation rates of the Na-23 nuclei indicate the presence of fast Na+ ion diffusion in the studied compound. At T\u003C490 K, diffusion occurs by means of Na+ ion jumps exclusively through the sublattice of Na3-Na5 positions, whereas Na1 and Na2 become involved in the diffusion processes (through chemical exchange with the Na3-Na5 sublattice) only at higher temperatures.')); |

Abstract |
The Na-air battery, because of its high energy density and low charging overpotential, is a promising candidate for low-cost energy storage, hence leading to intensive research. However, to achieve such a battery, the role of the positive electrode material in the discharge process must be understood. This issue is herein addressed by exploring the electrochemical reduction of oxygen, as well as the chemical formation and precipitation of NaO2 using different electrodes. Whereas a minor influence of the electrode surface is demonstrated on the electrochemical formation of NaO2, a strong dependence of the subsequent chemical precipitation of NaO2 is identified. In the origin, this effect stems from the surface energy and O-2/O-2(-) affinity of the electrode. The strong interaction of Au with O-2/O-2(-) increases the nucleation rate and leads to an altered growth process when compared to C surfaces. Consequently, thin (3 mu m) flakes of NaO2 are found on Au, whereas on C large cubes (10 mu m) of NaO2 are formed. This has significant impact on the cell performance and leads to four times higher capacity when C electrodes with low surface energy and O-2/O-2(-) affinity are used. It is hoped that these findings will enable the design of new positive electrode materials with optimized surfaces. |

Abstract |
The emergence of micropollutants into our aquatic resources is regarded as an issue of increasing environmental concern. To protect the aquatic environment against further contamination with micropollutants, treatment with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is put forward as a promising technique. In this work, an innovative AOP based on electrical discharges in a continuous-flow pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor with falling water film over activated carbon textile is examined for its potential application in water treatment. The effect of various operational parameters including feed gas type, gas flow rate, water flow rate and power on removal and energy efficiency has been studied. To this end, a synthetic micropollutant mixture containing five pesticides (atrazine, alachlor, diuron, dichlorvos and pentachlorophenol), two pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine and 1,7-alpha-ethinylestradiol), and 1 plasticizer (bisphenol A) is used. While working under optimal conditions, energy consumption was situated in the range 2.42-4.25 kW h/m(3), which is about two times lower than the economically viable energy cost of AOPs (5 kW h/m(3)). Hence, the application of non-thermal plasma could be regarded as a promising alternative AOP for (industrial) wastewater remediation. |

Abstract |
Na2C is a novel two-dimensional material with Dirac Half-metal (DHM) characteristic, exhibiting a combination of single-spin massless Dirac fermions and half-semimetal. In this paper based on the first-principles calculations, we studied the mechanical, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of Na2C nanosheet. The elastic modulus of Na2C was measured to 18.5 N/m and isotropic, whereas it shows anisotropic tensile strengths of 2.85 and 2.04 N/m, for the loading along the zigzag and armchair directions, respectively. We found that Na2C, is a DHM with band gap of 0.7 eV in the up-spin channel and has 2 mu(B) magnetic moment per unit cell. In addition, we investigated the effects of number of atomic layers (thickness), electric field and strain on the possibility of further tuning of the electronic and magnetic properties of Na2C. Our calculations show that by increasing the number of layers from monolayer to bulk, a transition from DHM to ferromagnetic metal occurs with a high magnetic moments in the range of 16-30 mu(B). With applying an electric field on the Na2C bilayer (within the ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic orders), energy band gap is slightly increased. In addition our results indicate that the electronic structure can be significantly modified by applying the mechanical straining. In this regard, under the biaxial strain (from 0% to – 8%) or large uniaxial strains (> – 6%), we observed the DHM to ferromagnetic-metal transition. Moreover, vacancy defects and atom substitutions can also effect the electronic and magnetic properties of Na2C nanosheet. Defective Na2C with single and double vacancies, was found to show the metallic response. With various atom substitutions this nanosheet exhibits; ferromagnetic-metal (Si and Be) with 5.2 and 3 mu(B); dilute-magnetic semiconductor (B and N) with 3 and 7 mu(B) magnetic moments, respectively. In the case of B or N atoms replacing the native C atom, the down-spin channel yields about 1 eV band gap. Interestingly, replacing the Na atoms in the native Na2C lattice with the Li can result in the formation of magnetic topological insulator phase with nontrivial band gap in the down-spin channel (25 meV and 0.15 eV) and up-spin channel (0.75 eV), in addition exhibit 8 mu(B) magnetic moment in the ground state. |

Abstract |
Samples of cretaceous limestone have been treated with three application methods (poultice, immersion and brushing) using different concentrations of ammonium oxalate solution (AmOx) and varying treatment time in order to test the efficiency of surface and in-depth formation of a protective layer of calcium oxalate (CaOx). Synchrotron-based microanalytical techniques (SR-mu XRD with 12.5 mu mx7.5 mu m (HxV) probe size, SR-mu FTIR with 10 mu mx10 mu m and 8 mu mx20 mu m probe sizes) and laboratory mu FTIR, XRD and SEM have been employed for analysis of the treated samples. Synchrotron-based techniques showed variations in the CaOx distribution along the surface on a micrometer scale. All treatments resulted in the development of a CaOx layer with a maximum thickness of approximately 40 mu m. Application by the brushing method with 10 1-min applications with 5-min breaks during one hour showed a development of the calcium oxalate layer equivalent to the poultice treatment taking 10 h. This treatment could be preferred for large marble or limestone surfaces where poultice usage is economically not feasible. |

Abstract |
We report charge transfer up to a single electron per interfacial unit cell across nonpolar heterointerfaces from the Mott insulator LaTiO3 to the charge transfer insulator LaCoO3. In high-quality bi- and trilayer systems grown using pulsed laser deposition, soft x-ray absorption, dichroism, and scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy loss spectroscopy are used to probe the cobalt-3d electron count and provide an element-specific investigation of the magnetic properties. The experiments show the cobalt valence conversion is active within 3 unit cells of the heterointerface, and able to generate full conversion to 3d7 divalent Co, which displays a paramagnetic ground state. The number of LaTiO3/LaCoO3 interfaces, the thickness of an additional, electronically insulating “break” layer between the LaTiO3 and LaCoO3, and the LaCoO3 film thickness itself in trilayers provide a trio of control knobs for average charge of the cobalt ions in LaCoO3, illustrating the efficacy of O−2p band alignment as a guiding principle for property design in complex oxide heterointerfaces. |

Abstract |
In this work, we employed first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the dynamical and thermal stability of graphene-like ZnX (X = N, P, As) nanosheets. We moreover analyzed the electronic, mechanical and optical properties of these novel two-dimensional (2D) systems. Acquired phonon dispersion relations reveal the absence of imaginary frequencies and thus confirming the dynamical stability of predicted monolayers. According to ab-initio molecular dynamics results however only ZnN and ZnP exhibit the required thermally stability. The elastic modulus of ZnN, ZnP and ZnAs are estimated to be 31, 21 and 17 N/m, respectively, and the corresponding tensile strengths values are 6.0, 4.9 and 4.0 N/m, respectively. Electronic band structure analysis confirms the metallic electronic character for the predicted monolayers. Results for the optical characteristics also indicate a reflectivity of 100% at extremely low energy levels, which is desirable for photonic and optoelectronic applications. According to our results, graphene-like ZnN and ZnP nanosheets can yield high capacities of 675 and 556 mAh/g for Li-ion storage, respectively. Acquired results confirm the stability and acceptable strength of ZnN and ZnP nanosheets and highlight their attractive application prospects in optical and energy storage systems. |

Abstract |
We address the nature of the disordered state that results from the adsorption of adatoms in graphene. For adatoms that sit at the center of the honeycomb plaquette, as in the case of most transition metals, we show that the ones that form a zero-energy resonant state lead to Anderson localization in the vicinity of the Dirac point. Among those, we show that there is a symmetry class of adatoms where Anderson localization is suppressed, leading to an exotic metallic state with large and rare charge droplets, that localizes only at the Dirac point. We identify the experimental conditions for the observation of the Anderson transition for adatoms in graphene. |

Abstract |
The fine structure of the Dirac energy spectrum in graphene induced by electron-optical phonon coupling is investigated in the portion of the spectrum near the phonon emission threshold. The derived new dispersion equation in the immediate neighborhood below the threshold corresponds to an electron-phonon bound state. We find that the singular vertex corrections beyond perturbation theory strongly increase the electron-phonon binding energy scale. The predicted enhancement of the effective electron-phonon coupling can be measured using angle-resolved spectroscopy. |

Abstract |
A microscopic Hamiltonian for interacting manganese impurities in dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is derived. It is shown that in p-type III-V DMS, the indirect exchange between Mn impurities has similarities with the Zener mechanism in transition metal oxides. Here the mobile and localized holes near the top of the valence band play the role of unoccupied p-orbitals which induce ferromagnetism. T-C estimated from the proposed kinematic exchange agrees with experiments on (Ga,Mn)As. The model is also applicable to the p-doped (Ga,Mn)P system. The magnetic ordering in n-type (Ga,Mn)N is due to exchange between the electrons localized on the levels lying deep in the forbidden energy gap. This mechanism is even closer to the original Zener mechanism. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Twisted graphene layers produce a moire pattern (MP) structure with a predetermined wavelength for a given twist angle. However, predicting the membrane corrugation amplitude for any angle other than pure AB-stacked or AA-stacked graphene is impossible using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) due to the large supercell. Here, within elasticity theory, we define the MP structure as the minimum-energy configuration, thereby leaving the height amplitude as the only unknown parameter. The latter is determined from DFT calculations for AB-and AA-stacked bilayer graphene in order to eliminate all fitting parameters. Excellent agreement with scanning tunneling microscopy results across multiple substrates is reported as a function of twist angle. |

Abstract |
Conversion of solar energy into thermal energy helps reducing consumption of non-renewable energies. Cermets (ceramicmetal composites) are versatile materials suitable, amongst other applications, for solar selective absorbers. Although the presence of metallic Ni particles in the dielectric matrix is a prerequisite for efficient solar selective absorption in NiCrOx cermets, no clear evidence of such particles is reported so far. By combining comprehensive chemical and structural analyses, we reveal the presumed nanostructure which is at the origin of the remarkable optical properties of this cermet material. Using sputtered NiCrOx layers in a solar absorber multilayer stack on aluminium substrate allows us to achieve solar absorptance as high as α=96.1% while keeping thermal emissivity as low as ε=2.2%, both values being comparable to best values recorded so far. With the nanostructure of sputtered NiCrOx cermets eventually revealed, further optimization of solar absorbers can be anticipated and technological exploitation of cermet materials in other applications can be foreseen. |

Abstract |
Effects of cooling slope angle and the temperature of molten metal on the globular structure of M2 high speed steel after holding at the semisolid state have been investigated. The globular structure was achieved by pouring the molten metal at 1595 °C on the ceramic cooling slope with the length of 200 mm and the angle of 25°. The globular structure of M2 high speed steel in the form of rolledannealed and as cast condition after holding at semisolid state has been achieved. The size of globular grains of cooling slope sample was smaller than that of the rolledannealed and as cast samples. Solid particles of rolledannealed sample after holding at semisolid state had better roundness compared with cooling slope sample. Dissolution of carbides in the austenite phase at grain boundaries leads to formation of globular particles in the semisolid state. MC-type and M6C-type eutectic carbides reprecipitate during cooling cycle along grain boundaries. |

Abstract |
The spiral magnetic structure and underlying spin lattice of BiMnFe2O6 are investigated by low-temperature neutron powder diffraction and density functional theory band structure calculations. In spite of the random distribution of the Mn3+ and Fe3+ cations, this centrosymmetric compound undergoes a transition into an incommensurate antiferromagnetically ordered state below TN≃220 K. The magnetic structure is characterized by the propagation vector k=[0,β,0] with β≃0.14 and the P221211′(0β0)0s0s magnetic superspace symmetry. It comprises antiferromagnetic helixes propagating along the b axis. The magnetic moments lie in the ac plane and rotate about π(1+β)≃204.8-deg angle between the adjacent magnetic atoms along b. The spiral magnetic structure arises from the peculiar frustrated arrangement of exchange couplings in the ab plane. The antiferromagnetic coupling along the c axis cancels the possible electric polarization and prevents ferroelectricity in BiMnFe2O6. |

Abstract |
A thorough investigation of three-dimensional kagome lattices of group IV elements is performed with first-principles calculations. The investigated kagome lattices of silicon and germanium are found to be of similar stability as the recently proposed carbon kagome lattice. Carbon and silicon kagome lattices are both direct-gap semiconductors but they have qualitatively different electronic band structures. While direct optical transitions between the valence and conduction bands are allowed in the carbon case, no such transitions can be observed for silicon. The kagome lattice of germanium exhibits semimetallic behavior but can be transformed into a semiconductor after compression. |
