Abstract: This study is dedicated to a better understanding of the processes occurring under ion bombardment of ultra-thin ZrO2/SiO2/Si gate dielectric stacks. Complex-shaped depth profiles were obtained by using TOF-SIMS with dual beam (500 eV for sputtering and 10 keV for analysis) Ar+ ions. The SIMS intensities of all the elements depend critically on the amount of oxygen at any moment of the sputtering process. Increased intensity is observed at the surface and at the ZrO2/SiO2 interface. A long tail of the Zr signal is present in the Si substrate, even after the second (SiO2/Si) interface, and a double bump structure in the Zr-90 and ZrO dimer is observed, which is more pronounced with increasing thickness of the interfacial SiO2 layer. Computer simulations using the dynamic Monte Carlo code (TRIDYN) are performed in order to distinguish the ion bombardment-induced effects from changes in the ionization degree. The original code is extended with simple models for the ionization mechanism and for the molecular yield during sputtering. Oxygen preferential sputtering at the surface and ballistic transport of Zr towards and through the interface are clearly demonstrated, but there is also evidence that due to recoil implantation oxygen gets piled-up near the ZrO2/SiO2 interface. Abstract: Determining the structure-to-property relationship of materials becomes particularly challenging when the material under investigation is dominated by defects and structural disorder. Knowledge on the exact atomic arrangement at the defective structure is required to understand its influence on the functional properties. However, standard diffraction techniques deliver structural information that is averaged over many unit cells. In particular, information about defects and order-disorder phenomena is contained in the coherent diffuse scattering intensity which often is difficult to uniquely interpret. Thus, the examination of the local disorder in materials requires a direct method to study their structure on the atomic level with chemical sensitivity. Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy in combination with atomic-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy, we show that the controversial structural arrangement of the Fe2O2+delta layers in the mixed ionic-electronic conducting Sr4Fe6O12+delta perovskite can be unambiguously resolved. Our results provide direct experimental evidence for the presence of a nanomixture of “ordered” and “disordered” domains in an epitaxial Sr4Fe6O12+delta thin film. The most favorable arrangement is the disordered structure and is interpreted as a randomly occurring but well-defined local shift of the Fe-O chains in the Fe2O2+delta layers. By analyzing the electron energy-loss near-edge structure of the different building blocks in the Sr4Fe6O12+delta unit cell we find that the mobile holes in this mixed ionic-electronic conducting oxide are highly localized in the Fe2O2+delta layers, which are responsible for the oxide-ion conductivity. A possible link between disorder and oxygen-ion transport along the Fe2O2+delta layers is proposed by arguing that the disorder can effectively break the oxygen diffusion pathways.

Abstract: The alloy Ti6Al4V is known to be prone to the formation of adiabatic shear bands when dynamically loaded in shear. This causes a catastrophic decrease of the load carrying capacity and is usually followed by fracture. Although, the main mechanism is recognized to be the competition between strain hardening and thermal softening, a detailed understanding of the role of microstructural plasticity mechanisms and macroscopic loading conditions does not exist yet. To study strain localization and shear fracture, different high strain rate shear tests have been carried out: compression of hat-shaped specimens, torsion of thin walled tubular specimens and in-plane shear tests. The value of the three techniques in studying shear localization is evaluated. Post-mortem analysis of the fracture surface and the materials' microstructure is performed with optical and electron microscopy. In all cases a ductile fracture is observed. SEM and TEM techniques are used to study the local microstructure and composition in the shear band and as such the driving mechanism for the ASB formation. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: The spectral properties of a classical two-dimensional (2D) cluster of charged particles which are confined by a quadratic potential are calculated. Using the method of Newton optimization we obtain the ground state and the metastable states. For a given configuration the eigenvectors and eigenfrequencies for the normal modes are obtained using the Householder diagonalization technique for the dynamical matrix whose elements are the second derivative of the potential energy. For small clusters the lowest excitation corresponds to an intershell rotation. Magic numbers are associated to clusters which are most stable against intershell rotation. For large clusters the lowest excitation is a vortex/anti-vortex pair.

Abstract: Within the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory we discuss the effect of nonmagnetic interactions between the normal current and supercurrent in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. The correction due to the current-current interactions is shown to have a transient character so that it contributes only when a system evolves. Numerical studies for thin current-carrying superconducting strips with no magnetic feedback show that the effect of the normal current corrections is more pronounced in the resistive state where fast-moving kinematic vortices are formed. Simulations also reveal that the largest contribution due to current-current interactions appears near the sample edges, where the vortices reach their maximal velocity.

Abstract: A magnetron discharge is characterized by drifts of the charged particles guiding center, caused by the magnetic field, in contrast to unmagnetized discharges. Because of these drifts, a pronounced asymmetry of the discharge can be observed in a dual magnetron setup. In this work, it is found that the shape of the discharge in a dual magnetron configuration depends on the magnetic field configuration. In a closed configuration, strong drifts were observed in one preferential direction, whereas in a mirror configuration the deflection of the discharge was not so pronounced. Our calculations confirm experimental observations.

Abstract: We study the phase transition into the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in high magnetic field in quasi-one dimensional superconductors within the quasi-classical formalism, taking into account the interchain Josephson coupling and the paramagnetic spin splitting. We show that anomalies in the field-direction dependence of the upper critical field when the magnetic field length equals to the FFLO period, previously described in [29], are characterized by the lock-in effect of the FFLO modulation wave vector, which is governed by the magnetic length.

Abstract: Fluorine insertion into the oxygen defect superstructure manganite Sr2MnO3.5+x has been shown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to result in two levels of fluorination. In the higher fluorine content sections, the fluorine anions displace oxygen anions from their apical positions into the equatorial vacancies, thus destroying the superstructure and reverting to a K2NiF4-type structure (a = 3.8210(1) angstrom and c = 12.686(1) angstrom). Conversely, lower fluorine content sections retain the Sr2MnO3.5+x defect superstructure, crystallising in the P2(1)/c space group. Fluorine intercalation into the reduced double-layer manganite Sr3Mn2O6 occurs in a step-wise fashion according to the general formula Sr3Mn2O6Fy with y = 1, 2, and 3. It is proposed that the y = 1 phase (a = 3.815(1)angstrom, c = 20.29(2) angstrom) is produced by the filling of all the equatorial oxygen vacancies by fluorine atoms whilst the y = 2 phase (a = 3.8222(2) angstrom, c = 21.2435(3)angstrom) has a random distribution of fluorine anions throughout both interstitial rocksalt and equatorial sites. Neutron powder diffraction data suggest that the fully fluorinated y = 3 phase (a = 3.8157(6) angstrom, c = 23.666(4) angstrom) corresponds to the complete occupation of all the equatorial oxygen vacancies and the interstitial sites by intercalated fluorine. Abstract: We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the dissipative state at high current densities of superconducting samples with a periodic array of holes consist of flux rivers resulting from a short range attractive interaction between vortices. This dynamically induced vortexvortex attraction results from the migration of quasiparticles out of the vortex core. We have directly visualized the formation of vortex chains by scanning Hall microscopy after freezing the dynamic state by a field cooling procedure at constant bias current. Similar experiments carried out in a sample without holes show no hint of flux river formation.
