Abstract |
The crucial requirement for diamond growth at low temperatures, enabling a wide range of new applications, is a high plasma density at a low gas pressure, which leads to a low thermal load onto sensitive substrate materials. While these conditions are not within reach for resonance cavity plasma systems, linear antenna microwave delivery systems allow the deposition of high quality diamond films at temperatures around 400 degrees C and at pressures below 1 mbar. In this work the codeposition of high quality plates and octahedral diamond grains in nanocrystalline films is reported. In contrast to previous reports claiming the need for high temperatures (T >= 850 degrees C), low temperatures (320 degrees C <= T <= 410 degrees C) were sufficient to deposit diamond plate structures. Cross-sectional high resolution transmission electron microscopy studies show that these plates are faulty cubic diamond terminated by large {111} surface facets with very little sp(2) bonded carbon in the grain boundaries. Raman and electron energy loss spectroscopy studies confirm a high diamond quality, above 93% sp(3) carbon content. Three potential mechanisms, that can account for the initial development of the observed plates rich with stacking faults, and are based on the presence of impurities, are proposed. |

Abstract |
Dry reforming of methane (DRM) in a gliding arc plasmatron is studied for different CH4 fractions in the mixture. The CO2 and CH4 conversions reach their highest values of approximately 18 and 10%, respectively, at 25% CH4 in the gas mixture, corresponding to an overall energy cost of 10 kJ L@1 (or 2.5 eV per molecule) and an energy efficiency of 66%. CO and H2 are the major products, with the formation of smaller fractions of C2Hx (x=2, 4, or 6) compounds and H2O. A chemical kinetics model is used to investigate the underlying chemical processes. The calculated CO2 and CH4 conversion and the energy efficiency are in good agreement with the experimental data. The model calculations reveal that the reaction of CO2 (mainly at vibrationally excited levels) with H radicals is mainly responsible for
the CO2 conversion, especially at higher CH4 fractions in the mixture, which explains why the CO2 conversion increases with increasing CH4 fraction. The main process responsible for CH4 conversion is the reaction with OH radicals. The excellent energy efficiency can be explained by the non-equilibrium character of the plasma, in which the electrons mainly activate the gas molecules, and by the important role of the vibrational kinetics of CO2. The results demonstrate that a gliding arc plasmatron is very promising for DRM. |

Abstract |
Three dimensional (3D) characterization of structural defects in nanoparticles by transmission electron microscopy is far from straightforward. We propose the use of a dose-efficient approach, so-called multimode tomography, during which tilt series of low and high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy projection images are acquired simultaneously. In this manner, not only reliable information can be obtained concerning the shape of the nanoparticles, but also the twin planes can be clearly visualized in 3D. As an example, we demonstrate the application of this approach to identify the position of the seeds with respect to the twinning planes in anisotropic gold nanoparticles synthesized using a seed mediated growth approach. |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('We present an advanced method to study spin fluctuations in superconductors quantitatively and entirely from first principles. This method can be generally applied to materials where electron-phonon coupling and spin fluctuations coexist. We employ it here to examine the recently synthesized superconductor iron tetraboride (FeB4) with experimental T-c similar to 2.4 K [H. Gou et al., Phys. Rev. Lett, 111, 157002 (2013)]. We prove that FeB4 is particularly prone to ferromagnetic spin fluctuations due to the presence of iron, resulting in a large Stoner interaction strength, I = 1.5 eV, as calculated from first principles. The other important factor is its Fermi surface that consists of three separate sheets, among which two are nested ellipsoids. The resulting susceptibility has a ferromagnetic peak around q = 0, from which we calculated the repulsive interaction between Cooper pair electrons using the random phase approximation. Subsequently, we combined the electron-phonon interaction calculated from first principles with the spin fluctuation interaction in fully anisotropic Eliashberg theory calculations. We show that the resulting superconducting gap spectrum is conventional, yet very strongly depleted due to coupling to the spin fluctuations. The critical temperature decreases from T-c = 41 K, if they are not taken into account, to T-c = 1.7 K, in good agreement with the experimental value.')); |

Abstract |
<script type='text/javascript'>document.write(unpmarked('Li-rich NMC are considered nowadays as one of the most promising candidates for high energy density cathodes. One significant challenge is nested in adjusting their synthesis conditions to reach optimum electrochemical performance, but no consensus has been reached yet on the ideal synthesis protocol. Herein, we revisited the elaboration of Li-rich NMC electrodes by focusing on the science involved through each synthesis steps using carbonate Ni0.1625Mn0.675Co0.1625CO3 precursor coprecipitation combined with solid state synthesis. We demonstrated the effect of precursors concentration on the kinetics of the precipitation reaction and provided clues to obtain spherically agglomerated NMC carbonates of different sizes. Moreover, we highlighted the strong impact of the Li2CO3/NMC carbonate ratio on the morphology and particles size of Li-rich NMC and subsequently on their electrochemical performance. Ratio of 1.35 was found to reproducibly give the best performance with namely a first discharge capacity of 269 mAh g(-1) and capacity retention of 89.6% after 100 cycles. We hope that our results, which reveal how particle size, morphology, and phase composition affect the materials electrochemical performance, will help in reconciling literature data while providing valuable fundamental information for up scaling approaches.')); |

Abstract |
We demonstrate the in situ engineering of superconducting nanocircuitry by targeted modulation of material properties through high applied current densities. We show that the sequential repetition of such customized electro-annealing in a niobium (Nb) nanoconstriction can broadly tune the superconducting critical temperature T-c and the normal-state resistance R-n in the targeted area. Once a sizable R-n is reached, clear magneto-resistance oscillations are detected along with a Fraunhofer-like field dependence of the critical current, indicating the formation of a weak link but with further adjustable characteristics. Advanced Ginzburg-Landau simulations fully corroborate this picture, employing the detailed parametrization from the electrical characterization and high resolution electron microscope images of the region within the constriction where the material has undergone amorphization by electro-annealing. |

Abstract |
Electro-optical modulators, which use an electric voltage (or an electric field) to modulate a beam of light, are essential elements in present-day telecommunication devices. Using a self-consistent tight-binding approach combined with the standard Kubo formula, we show that the optical conductivity and the linear dichroism of few-layer phosphorene can be modulated by a perpendicular electric field. We find that the field-induced charge screening plays a significant role in modulating the optical conductivity and the linear dichroism. Distinct absorption peaks are induced in the conductivity spectrum due to the strong quantum confinement along the out-of-plane direction and to the field-induced forbidden-to-allowed transitions. The field modulation of the linear dichroism becomes more pronounced with increasing number of phosphorene layers. We also show that the Faraday rotation is present in few-layer phosphorene even in the absence of an external magnetic field. This optical Hall effect is induced by the reduced lattice symmetry of few-layer phosphorene. The Faraday rotation is greatly influenced by the field-induced charge screening and is strongly dependent on the strength of perpendicular electric field and on the number of phosphorene layers. |

Abstract |
Environmental factors, such as light, humidity and temperature are triggering agents for the alteration of organic and/or inorganic constituents of oil paintings. The oxidation of the organic material is favored by increasing of relative humidity and temperature, whereas processes involving changes of the oxidation states of a number of inorganic pigments (e.g., vermilion, cadmium yellows, zinc yellows, chrome yellows) are mainly activated by light-exposure. In view of the optimization of the long-term conservation and restoration strategies of paintings it is of relevant interest to establish the consequences of thermal parameters (temperature and relative humidity) on the chemical/photochemical-reactivity and the nature of the alteration products of light sensitive-pigments in oil medium. To this aim here we propose a multi-method analytical approach based on the combination of diffuse reflectance UV-Vis, FTIR, synchrotron radiation (SR)-based micro X-ray fluorescence (mu-XRF)/micro-X-ray absorption neat edge structure ()CANES) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies for studying the effects of different relative humidity conditions before and after light exposure on the reactivity of a series of lead chromate-based pigments [such as PbCrO4 center dot PbO (monoclinic), PbCrO4 (monoclinic) and PbCr0.2S0.8O4 (orthorhombic)] in an oil medium. The investigation of paint models was also compared to that of a late 19th century historical orthorhombic PbCr0.4S0.6O4 oil paint. Diffuse reflectance UV-Vis and FTIR spectroscopies were used to obtain information associated with chromatic changes and the formation of organo-metal degradation products at the paint surface. SR-based Cr K-edge mu-XANES/mu-XRF mapping analysis and EPR spectroscopy were employed in a complementary fashion to determine the amount, nature and distribution of Cr(III) and Cr(V)-based alteration compounds within the paints with micrometric spatial resolution. Under the employed thermal aging conditions, lead(II)-carboxylates and reduced Cr-compounds (in abundance of up to about 35% at the surface) have been identified in the lead chromate-based paints. The tendency of chromates to become reduced increased with increasing moisture levels and was favored for the orthorhombic PbCr0.2S0.8O4 compounds. The redox process gave rise to the formation of Cr(V)-species in relative amount much higher than that was formed in the equivalent paint which was exposed only to light. After light-exposure of the thermally aged paints, compounds ascribable to the oxidation of the organic binder were detected for all the types of pigments. Nevertheless, the previous thermal treatment increased the tendency toward photo-reduction of only the PbCr0.2S0.8O4 pigment. For this light-sensitive compound, the thickness variation of the reduced Cr-rich (ca. 70%) photo-alteration layer with moisture levels could be ascribed to a surface passivation phenomenon that had already occurred before photochemical aging. Abstract |
Algal-based bioenergy products have faced multiple economic and environmental problems. To counter these problems, algal-based biorefineries have been proposed as a promising solution. Multiple environmental and economic assessments have analyzed this concept. However, a wide variation in results was reported. This study performs a review to evaluate the methodological reasons behind this variation. Based on this review, four main challenges for a sustainability assessment were identified: 1) the use of a clear framework; 2) the adaptation of the methodology to all stages of technological maturity; 3) the use of harmonized assumptions; 4) the integration of the technological process. A generic methodology, based on the integration of a techno-economic assessment methodology and a streamlined life cycle assessment was proposed. This environmental techno-economic assessment can be performed following an iterative approach during each stage of technology development. In this way, crucial technological parameters can be directly identified and evaluated during the maturation of the technology. The use of this assessment methodology can therefore act as guidance to decrease the time-to-market for innovative and sustainable technologies. |

Abstract |
European policy states that by 2020 at least 20% of final energy consumption should come from renewable energy sources. Biomass as a renewable energy source cannot be disregarded in order to attain this target. In this study a macro screening approach is developed to determine potential locations for biomass valorization in a specified region. The approach consists of five steps: (1) criteria determination, (2) data gathering, (3) weight assignment, (4) final score, (5) spatial representation. The resulting outcome provides a first well balanced scan of the possibilities for energy production using regional biomass. This way policy makers and investors can be supported and motivated to study the possibilities of building energy production plants at specific locations in more detail, which can be described as a 'micro-screening'. In our case study the approach is applied to determine the potentially interesting locations to establish a biomass project. The region has been limited to the forty-four communities in the province of Limburg (Belgium). The macro screening approach has shown to be very effective since the amount of interesting locations has been reduced drastically. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Branched plasmonic nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted much attention due to electric field enhancements at their tips. Seeded growth provides routes to NCs with defined branching patterns and, in turn, near-field distributions with defined symmetries. Here, a systematic analysis was undertaken in which seeds containing different distributions of planar defects were used to grow branched NCs in order to understand how their distributions direct the branching. Characterization of the products by multimode electron tomography and analysis of the NC morphologies at different overgrowth stages indicate that the branching patterns are directed by the seed defects, with the emergence of branches from the seed faces consistent with minimizing volumetric strain energy at the expense of surface energy. These results contrast with growth of branched NCs from single-crystalline seeds and provide a new platform for the synthesis of symmetrically branched plasmonic NCs. |

Abstract |
Bimetallic nanoparticles with tailored size and specific composition have shown promise as stable and selective catalysts for electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2R) in batch systems. Yet, limited effort was devoted to understand the effect of ligand coverage and postsynthesis treatments on CO2 reduction, especially under industrially applicable conditions, such as at high currents (>100 mA/cm2) using gas diffusion electrodes (GDE) and flow reactors. In this work, Cu–Ag core–shell nanoparticles (11 ± 2 nm) were prepared with three different surface modes: (i) capped with oleylamine, (ii) capped with monoisopropylamine, and (iii) surfactant free with a reducing borohydride agent; Cu–Ag (OAm), Cu–Ag (MIPA), and Cu–Ag (NaBH4), respectively. The ligand exchange and removal was evidenced by infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) analysis, whereas high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) showed their effect on the interparticle distance and nanoparticle rearrangement. Later on, we developed a process-on-substrate method to track these effects on CO2R. Cu–Ag (OAm) gave a lower on-set potential for hydrocarbon production, whereas Cu–Ag (MIPA) and Cu–Ag (NaBH4) promoted syngas production. The electrochemical impedance and surface area analysis on the well-controlled electrodes showed gradual increases in the electrical conductivity and active surface area after each surface treatment. We found that the increasing amount of the triple phase boundaries (the meeting point for the electron–electrolyte–CO2 reactant) affect the required electrode potential and eventually the C+2e̅/C2e̅ product ratio. This study highlights the importance of the electron transfer to those active sites affected by the capping agents—particularly on larger substrates that are crucial for their industrial application. |

Abstract |
Filamentous cable bacteria display long-range electron transport, generating electrical currents over centimeter distances through a highly ordered network of fibers embedded in their cell envelope. The conductivity of these periplasmic wires is exceptionally high for a biological material, but their chemical structure and underlying electron transport mechanism remain unresolved. Here, we combine high-resolution microscopy, spectroscopy, and chemical imaging on individual cable bacterium filaments to demonstrate that the periplasmic wires consist of a conductive protein core surrounded by an insulating protein shell layer. The core proteins contain a sulfur-ligated nickel cofactor, and conductivity decreases when nickel is oxidized or selectively removed. The involvement of nickel as the active metal in biological conduction is remarkable, and suggests a hitherto unknown form of electron transport that enables efficient conduction in centimeter-long protein structures. |

Abstract |
The combination of AgNO3 with NaH results in Ag nanoparticles that can selectively perform alcohol aminations under mild reaction conditions (110 °C). NaH not only serves as a reducing agent for the Ag salt, but also activates the alcohol for dehydrogenation to the corresponding ketone/aldehyde. The stability of the particles can be improved by immobilizing them onto mixed Al2O3Ga2O3 supports; the combination of Ga and Al provides materials with stronger Lewis acidic sites compared to pure alumina or gallium oxide supports. This leads to catalysts with enhanced activities, without the necessity of adding external Lewis acids. Detailed TEM characterization also reveals a close interaction between the Ag NPs and the gallium oxide phase. The obtained catalysts are recyclable and show activity for the alcohol amination using a variety of aliphatic and aromatic amines under mild conditions. |

Abstract |
The R-2(MoO4)(3) (R = rare earth elements) molybdates doped with Eu3+ cations are interesting red-emitting materials for display and solid-state lighting applications. The structure and luminescent properties of the R2-xEux(MoO4)(3) (R = Gd, Sm) solid solutions have been investigated as a function of chemical composition and preparation conditions. Monoclinic (alpha) and orthorhombic (beta') R2-xEux(MoO4)(3) (R = Gd, Sm; 0 <= x <= 2) modifications were prepared by solid-state reaction, and their structures were investigated using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The pure orthorhombic beta'-phases could be synthesized only by quenching from high temperature to room temperature for Gd2-xEux(MoO4)(3) in the Eu3+-rich part (x > 1) and for all Sm2-xEux(MoO4)(3) solid solutions. The transformation from the alpha-phase to the beta'-phase results in a notable increase (similar to 24%) of the unit cell volume for all R2-xEux(MoO4)(3) (R = Sm, Gd) solid solutions. The luminescent properties of all R2-xEux(MoO4)(3) (R = Gd, Sm; 0 <= x <= 2) solid solutions were measured, and their optical properties were related to their structural properties. All R2-xEux(MoO4)(3) (R = Gd, Sm; 0 <= x <= 2) phosphors emit intense red light dominated by the D-5(0)-> F-7(2) transition at similar to 616 nm. However, a change in the multiplet splitting is observed when switching from the monoclinic to the orthorhombic structure, as a consequence of the change in coordination polyhedron of the luminescent ion from RO8 to RO7 for the alpha- and beta'-modification, respectively. The Gd2-xEux(MoO4)(3) solid solutions are the most efficient emitters in the range of 0 < x < 1.5, but their emission intensity is comparable to or even significantly lower than that of Sm2-xEux(MoO4)(3) for higher Eu3+ concentrations (1.5 <= x <= 1.75). Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) measurements revealed the influence of the structure and element content on the number and positions of bands in the ultraviolet-visible-infrared regions of the EELS spectrum. |

Abstract |
While conjugated vegetable oils are currently used as additives in the drying agents of oils and paints, they are also attractive molecules for making bio-plastics. Moreover, conjugated oils will soon be accepted as nutritional additives for functional food products. While current manufacture of conjugated vegetable oils or conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) uses a homogeneous base as isomerisation catalyst, a heterogeneous alternative is not available today. This contribution presents the direct production of CLAs over Ru supported on different zeolites, varying in topology (ZSM-5, BETA, Y), Si/Al ratio and countercation (H+, Na+, Cs+). Ru/Cs-USY, with a Si/Al ratio of 40, was identified as the most active and selective catalyst for isomerisation of methyl linoleate (cis-9,cis-12 (C18:2)) to CLA at 165 °C. Interestingly, no hydrogen pre-treatment of the catalyst or addition of hydrogen donors is required to achieve industrially relevant isomerisation productivities, namely, 0.7 g of CLA per litre of solvent per minute. Moreover, the biologically most active CLA isomers, namely, cis-9,trans-11, trans-10,cis-12 and trans-9,trans-11, were the main products, especially at low catalyst concentrations. Ex situ physicochemical characterisation with CO chemisorption, extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements, transmission electron microscopy analysis, and temperature-programmed oxidation reveals the presence of highly dispersed RuO2 species in Ru/Cs-USY(40). |

Abstract |
The crystal structure of a novel compound Pb13Mn9O25 has been determined through a direct space structure solution with a Monte-Carlo-based global optimization using precession electron diffraction data (a=14.177(3) Å, c=3.9320(7) Å, SG P4/m, RF=0.239) and compositional information obtained from energy dispersive X-ray analysis and electron energy loss spectroscopy. This allowed to obtain a reliable structural model even despite the simultaneous presence of both heavy (Pb) and light (O) scattering elements and to validate the accuracy of the electron diffraction-based structure refinement. This provides an important benchmark for further studies of complex structural problems with electron diffraction techniques. Pb13Mn9O25 has an anion- and cation-deficient perovskite-based structure with the A-positions filled by the Pb atoms and 9/13 of the B positions filled by the Mn atoms in an ordered manner. MnO6 octahedra and MnO5 tetragonal pyramids form a network by sharing common corners. Tunnels are formed in the network due to an ordered arrangement of vacancies at the B-sublattice. These tunnels provide sufficient space for localization of the lone 6s2 electron pairs of the Pb2+ cations, suggested as the driving force for the structural difference between Pb13Mn9O25 and the manganites of alkali-earth elements with similar compositions. |

Abstract |
A polycrystalline sample of LuFe2O4 has been investigated by means of powder synchrotron x-ray and neutron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), along with Mössbauer spectroscopy and transport and magnetic properties. A monoclinic distortion is unambiguously evidenced, and the crystal structure is refined in the monoclinic C2/m space group [aM = 5.9563(1) Å, bM = 3.4372(1) Å, cM = 8.6431(1) Å, β = 103.24(1)°]. Along with the previously reported modulations distinctive of the charge-ordering (CO) of the iron species, a new type of incommensurate order is observed, characterized by a vector q⃗1 = α1a⃗M* + γ1c⃗M* (with α1 ≅ 0.55, γ1 ≅ 0.13). In situ heating TEM observations from 300 to 773 K confirm that the satellites associated with q⃗1 vanish completely, only at a temperature significantly higher than the CO temperature. This incommensurate modulation has a displacive character and corresponds primarily to a transverse displacive modulation wave of the Lu cations position, as revealed by the high resolution, high angle annular dark field scanning TEM images and in agreement with synchrotron data refinements. Analyses of vacuum-annealed samples converge toward the hypothesis of a new ordering mechanism, associated with a tiny oxygen deviation from the O4 stoichiometry. |

Abstract |
In this study of the changes induced by exposing MWCNTs to a nitrogen plasma, it was found by HRTEM that the atomic nitrogen exposure does not significantly etch the surface of the carbon nanotube (CNT). Nevertheless, the atomic nitrogen generated by a microwave plasma effectively grafts amine, nitrile, amide, and oxime groups onto the CNT surface, as observed by XPS, altering the density of valence electronic states, as seen in UPS. Mesoporous strontium hydroxyapatite (SrHAp) nanorods (NRs) have been successfully synthesized using a simple and efficient chemical route, i.e. the hydrothermal method. Structural and morphological characterization of the as-synthesized SrHAp NRs have been performed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). TEM and HAADF-STEM measurements of the NRs reveal the coexistence of longer and shorter particles with the length ranging from 50 nm to 400 nm and a diameter of about 20-40 nm. Electron tomography measurements of the NRs allow us to better visualize the mesopores and their facets. Two model drugs, hydrophobic risperidone and hydrophilic pramipexole, were loaded into the SrHAp NRs. These nanorods were coated using a modified chitosan (CS) with poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), in order to encapsulate the drug-loaded SrHAp nanoparticles and reduce the cytotoxicity of the loaded materials. The drug release from neat and encapsulated SrHAp NRs mainly depends on the drug hydrophilicity. Importantly, although neat SrHAp nanorods exhibit some cytotoxicity against Caco-2 cells, the Cs-g-PHEMA-SrHAp drug-loaded nanorods show an acceptable cytocompatibility. |

Abstract |
Titania nanoparticles have been deposited on inert porous silica supports with high specific surface area. These materials have potential applications in paint and textile industry as the titania particles selectively deposited on the inner surface of the silica supports act as a photocatalyst. The inert external surface is necessary to avoid photodegradation of the textile material or the paint components. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts has been evaluated with two catalytic setups. One setup in aqueous phase, for the degradation of dyes such as rhodamine-6G, is commonly used. The second setup is a continuous flow gaseous phase setup which was used for the mineralization of ethanol as a representative volatile organic compound (VOC). The influence of the porosity and the morphology of the silica supports on the photocatalytic activity are discussed. |
